Saw an older video, Win7 good til 2023 but MS will charge for updates increasing charges every year. But what will for you out is when your browser updates and then tells you Win7 is no longer supported, or that new game you downloaded requires Win10. Or the new 8700k or Ryzen 3000's will force Win10.
@nuralimedeu
@nuralimedeu 5 лет назад
That's being too serious. Perhaps in 5-10 years Microsoft will realize its mistakes and improve itself and Windows. You gotta have at least some hope. Of course, I'm not asking you to upgrade now, but when Windows 10 will get 99% polished (it is currently far from it) in the future, you can and probably should.

Keep fighting the good fight sir, my country tried to push us towards windows 10, It starts with the schools removing it then in the shops, friends and then the internet. @@LtSich I only have used XP, 7 and 10. Of these three W7 is the least bad Windows. I have had a few problems with W7: - MS failed to implement auto-hide for the taskbar properly. You always see at least 2 pixels high of the taskbar when it is 'hidden' (also a problem for XFCE but not for KDE!) but worse is that it has a bug for when you use an application fullscreen. Try it out: set the taskbar on autohide, watch RU-vid in fullscreen on W7, press the Windows-button of your keyboard and then press it again. Windows does not resume the application in full-screen. At least for W10 MS solved this bug but they still show 1 or 2 pixels high when you 'hide' the taskbar. Sloppy work! - I had a system-breaking update twice. The same bug. Don't ask me what happened (it might have had to do with dependencies and not careful checking by MS because I only occasionally updated) but this was the bug: after updating and rebooting I couldn't grab any windows or click on any buttons on those windows. When I opened the task manager I could grab a window and press a button again for a short time (once, twice, maybe three times) and then I couldn't any more. Twice! Obviously I had to do a clean install to solve this problem and it made me afraid to update Windows7. I did the first few rounds of updates the first days and then I disabled update out of fear that it would break again. Probably not the best thing but I am a cautious user. Say what you want about Linux, none of the Linux distros which I installed (Mint, Kubuntu, Fedora and Manjaro) crashed like that on my system.

@nicholaswjamrock
@nicholaswjamrock 5 лет назад
you dont want anything new until you cant used new tech with the old os. Win 10 is more secure than win 7. as win 7 was more secure than xp. if you dont like the UI thats fine but dont say something is wrong with it because you dont like it. there is one basic way to enhance the security of windows and most users will never implement it , create a basic user account different from the admin account and keep your AV updated and you will be fine. you say useless features, windows was never built for one person alone, what you may consider useless may be a god send feature for someone else. if you dont like window 10 you can switch to linux or mac os, but i guess you will find something to complain about. for all the talk i have seen only seen one major problem with windows 10, and that was not even with windows 10, it with MS policy, where they forced people computers to upgrade without there permission, and some of these computers cant run windows 10 because drivers are not available so the run crappy. people talk about data collection, everyone that is talking has a smart phone, I think MS did a better job that google + cellphone manufacturers and Apple they were up front with what they were collecting, but i guess most people did not read the EULA. there are things about win10 i dont like, there are things about win 7 i dont like, in fact there are things about all OSs i have used that i dont like. But i dont go around bashing it because someone out there likes it and use it, it just not for me. one of by biggest gripes with win 7 is i could not shut it down using windows Key U U, so i created my own script just to do that. its back in windows 10, if you dont like how windows work take a little time and figure out how you can customize it to suite your need and stop the baseless complaining
@mrcrackerist

@@nicholaswjamrock I have used windows my entire life"all of it". I know how to customize windows. Currently running Arch Linux with Xmonad. some bad points about windows. *UI (I know you mentioned it) *message spam from everything(even when turned off) *Updates(I know you also talked about it) *registry, settings, configure panel, power-shell, they don't have one thing to do all the configurations. *bloated system, its very hard to get windows under 35gb in size. *its slow and unresponsive should we continue? this is just a few points that i can think of right now.

The folder system on Win7 was far superior to Win10's. You could choose to view folders in reverse chronological order, very handy for finding your recent work. With 10 you only have this feature on Downloads. Win 10 also uses drag and drop more than copy or move, annoying when you try to drag to the list of folders and just as you release the target folder jumps several places and you end up trying to figure which folder it actually moved to. Some good features, but outweighed by the annoying new ones. I have never managed to get the Cortana feature working in two years.

I'm glad a RU-vidr understands what end of life on an OS means and not fearmongering about it! The way some of these RU-vidrs talk you would think your computer is going to explode on Jan. 14 2020 if you don't upgrade or change your OS. My dad still uses 7 on his laptop and I maintain it and we haven't had a problem and he probably will still uses it after end of life until we get him a computer since his laptop won't run windows 10 (it probably will but I'm not going to try it with a duel core cpu and 4 gb of ram). As long as I'm watching it it won't matter if he uses it for a couple months after EOL. At least that is my take on it, after he gets that new computer I'm going to get that laptop and I'm going to make into a Linux machine so I can start experimenting with ARCH. That will be fun!

The end of Win-7 I feel is a lot of Hype. My main desktop is 8 years old, and with the then Microsoft updates, I got hit twice with ransomware. From the last hit by ransomware, shut off the security updates, and used other party protection, and in the last 6+ years have not had any malware, ransomware or bugs ever hit my computer! I am all over the WEB, and a IT person see's my monitor 10+ times a day, and him or I has "NEVER" seen the dreaded blue screen come up. The computer has 225+ plus program's on board. It has bench mark at a solid 5.2, and with no updates, and just flies along. WIN-10, as have seen, has had it troubles with up dates. I have tried Win-10 on my dual-boot laptop, and see no reason to need it. Think, before leaving Win-7 .

Windows 7 is the best Windows version ever! I will never upgrade to the spyware / crapware OS called Windows 10. Windows 7 with no updates is still way better than Windows 10. As for a Linux distribution for Windows users, I would recommend Kubuntu. KDE Plasma (the desktop environment on Kubuntu) is way more Windows-like and andvanced than the default Cinnamon desktop envirnment in Linux Mint.

Its Windows Media Center which kept me glued on Windows 7. Tried alternative software such as Kodi to service the 3 TV Tuners, but had ended up with all sorts of peculiar issues. Conclusion: Windows 7 Media Center is still the most suitable software for integrating multiple tuners; and the fact that when upgrading to Windows 10 that feature was simply removed had been the biggest disappointment in upgrading to Windows 10.

@aoelp
@aoelp 5 лет назад
You are right. Though Wine is a double edged sword. Once the userbase is big enough, we should demand native ports for anything and not support rejection without good reason. Though for now I am just happy that I can play most of my games without booting up Windows in some way or becoming a console peasant (which though is impossible for Windows-exclusive titles). ReactOS always seemed like a really nice project to me, but it turns out recreating Windows or rather getting binary compatible with a rather small team on the basis of some donations takes a lot of time. Or is AAA gaming on ReactOS a thing already?

Windows 10 is rough, ugly step back in usability and intuitivity. It goes back to Windows 95 in some aspects and even to the Windows 1 in it's flatness and dull GUI. While number of steps to get somewhere is somewhere between W98 and W2000. Maybe XP. Windows I sold in hundreds copies, even previous non genuine users wanted it. My main selling point it was "everything in one click less". Remember shutdown? XP: START->shutdown->wait animation -> shutdown. 7: Start->Shutdown 10: Power options -> nail SMALL (and almost identical icon to settings) power icon -> aim and nail option (like in Vista) for Shutdown. Than why (WHY?) is everything so tiny on 10? Like scrollbars, show desktop, ... I have 12.000 dpi Logitech mouse and it is insane to aim anithing. CLickable areas only few pixels wide and I would understand that in 800x600 enviroment of Windows 95, to preserve space and that would be huge on monitor, but now with 4k resolution, this is insane. And visual cues are there AFTER you already hit it or click it, instead BEFORE to be able to find sooner. And this stupid counterintuitive interface is spreading like a plaque in all other software. I started to seek previous (Windows 7 versions) of programs, since new onces lost any visual appeal. Just stuffed together with (Visual) Basic elements, like checkboxes and radio buttons instead of nice custom buttons. Elements and info just stuffed all over without order. Like some students would make this. This is not alone, this is norn in Windows 10... and after all YEARS, it is still W7 leftovers all over the place. Unti I can, I use old Control Panel, since modern settings windows are worst than webpages years ago. I really must think of Linux.

Speaking about that, Chris, you should explain the concept of SR-IOV (and that it IS supported for 'professional' cards) in one of your next PCIe-passthrough videos. I've used 100% Linux on my laptop since 2009. I switched to 100% Linux on my gaming HTPC last year. I switched to dual-boot Ubuntu Studio at work a few months ago. I hadn't looked at Windows since January, and I had to open a video editing session in Camtasia (which I haven't gotten to work with Wine), and I had to go through Windows Update TWICE (two auto reboots) just to log in. I only needed to do one simple edit, a two-minute job, and I was stuck staring at my screen for around twenty minutes. I mean, I was on the clock, so whatever, but it was super frustrating. It makes no sense that Windows is the standard in the workplace, yet it feels like it slows me down so much in comparison to Linux. In Linux, I just get a notification that updates are available. I can just close it, or I can allow it and minimize it. It never delays me using other software, rebooting my machine, or logging in. It just does what it needs to without me babysitting it.
