This was a very bad misleading explanation of the trait. The term “trait” alone is misleading. Doctors USED to believe the things you are saying, but know better now. Those with the trait typically have lower extremity pain and swelling often, they also typically suffer from minor iron deficiency anemia. The “extreme conditions necessary to cause death do not in fact have to be that extreme. Physical exertion (exercise, high temperatures, elevation changes... you know the normal things children and adults should be doing) have been know to cause severe responses. Women are known to have serious complications after giving birth. I really dislike how the medical community does not take this condition serious. No, isn’t as bad as full blown sickle cell, but it is still bad and still has complications. Doctors try to make the sufferers feel crazy when reporting the complications. According to ST Jude’s, “People with sickle cell trait have red blood cells that have normal hemoglobin A, and abnormal hemoglobin. The abnormal hemoglobin is called hemoglobin S. People with sickle cell trait have slightly more hemoglobin A than hemoglobin S. They have enough hemoglobin A to help their red blood cells carry oxygen to the body.” In other words those with Sickle Cell “Trait” DO have abnormal hemoglobin at all times, but just have enough to function with unnoticeable complications.

I suffer from sickle cell trait and in times of stress urinte blood (I urinated blood for 6 months before and the doctors thought It was cancer, until I had the CT scans, blood tests etc that's when I found out I was sickle cell trait) and I also get bad pins and needles on my left leg.

Is it common for people with sickle cell trait to urinate blood? Or to have blood in their urine? My blood tests came positive to sickle cell trait. I had CT scans, now the doctor wants me to come in for a cystoscopy.
@user-jv3cz6zx3q
@user-jv3cz6zx3q 2 года назад
@@ndalakalonda no it's not common to urinte blood if you have sickle cell trait. According my urologist consultant and Google, 1 in 1000 people with sickle cell trait can experience abnormal blood clots in their urine. When I first saw blood in my urine I visited my GP, he asked me all the relevent questions ( am I in pain, am I sure it's not my period etc) the answers was all no! He then straight up told me that he thinks I have cancer. He then made an emergency referral to the hospital to get an ultrasound, CT scan, allot of blood tests (that's when I found out that I have sickle cell trait) I then I had a ureteroscopy scan. They found some blood clots in the kidney. Thank God it was not cancer or anything serious. The urologist consultant said it's to do with my sickle cell trait. Only a few people may experience abnormal bleeding from time to time. Within the past 7 years I've urinated blood 3 times. The longest 6months. From my own observation when I'm mentally and physically stressed that's when I urinate blood and your body will stop on its own time. For the past week, I've now been getting leg cramps on my left leg. It causes difficult sleeping. The last time I had legs cramps (4 months ago) I started urinting blood again which lasted 3 weeks. I again need to get it checked out. Good luck at your appointment. Wishing you all the best 🙌🏽

I’m 40 and have the trait. I’ve been pretty damn healthy all my life. I eat junk food though in moderation. No pain just some serious exhaustion now. Almost like narcolepsy. Like when I lay down I’m out in less than 1 min flat and I have to take a power nap during the day. I can sleep 12 hours at night and still need a power nap. It freaking sucks. I’m trying to get a sleep study now but I def think it has something to do with the sickle cell trait.

I was kind of a sickly child. I had a weak stomach and suffered from nosebleeds whenever my body got overheated. Not sure if those symptoms are connected to SCT (or maybe it's just me, as an individual). I also once fainted on a hot day at the fair (as a child). Oh, and I became anemic very easily (compared to the rest of my family who were never anemic) if I didn't have a meat with every meal. When I joined the workforce from my 20s onwards, I couldn't understand why I was so exhausted after work every day (office jobs), especially for a person in their 20s who should be energetic and in the prime of their life. But I started attending the gym and that helped somewhat (in terms of energy). I went from feeling exhausted every day after work - to only feeling exhausted by the end of the week, lol! I needed to take it easy on Saturdays and just have a lay in (or drift in and out of sleep for most of the day). When I hit my 30s, I started experiencing some autoimmune issues. Now I'm in my 40s and experiencing what I suspect to be perimenopause symptoms. It's a never-ending story for me 😭

Sickle~y no pun intended… We’re not taken seriously until it’s time to harvest our blood for sickle cell patients. More research into SCT would not divert attention from SCD but would benefit it. Not to mention reproductive education about being a carrier and not passing on SCD…. Fatigue is the worst symptom for me. Not only physical but psychological. It presents as ADHD. Whether or not it’s caused by SCT is definitely real and unpleasant. Blanket statements about it causing no symptoms is plain ridiculous at this point.

Wonderful video, just like all of your others. However, please be aware it is not an ENTIRELY benign condition. Those with sickle cell trait should avoid ever getting very dehydrated or overheated, and also should avoid high elevation (e.g. mountain climbing) and high pressure (e.g. deep sea scuba diving) conditions. Under these conditions, red blood cells can sickle in those with sickle cell trait. It is believed that rarely, SCT can contribute to kidney damage or sudden death. This typically happens during extreme athletic training.

Dehydration is huge as is high elevation and extreme exercise. A friend of the family died suddenly, she was late 50s. The medical examiner told her mother it was the sickle cell trait. Her mom refuses to believe it to this day. I think Dehydration may have been a big factor, but that's just my opinion.

@@MedicosisPerfectionalis but should the co-dominance phenomenon exists which means that one cell expresses both genotypes at the same time ?? according to your answer , some RBCs express only maternal copy and shut down the paternal copy , and other RBCs do the opposite .. it matters because if there are RBCs carry only HbS and other carrying HbA , the sickling would be much more than if one RBCs carry both types ..right ??

I'm a little confused. How is sickle cell trait due to the codominance phenomenon and yet at the same time you say sickle cell disease is a recessive disorder
@ma7119_
@ma7119_ 2 года назад
Codominance and incomplete dominance phenomenons occur in the heterozygous genotypes. In this case, sickle cell TRAIT is the heterozygous codominance phenomenon, and sickle cell DISEASE is the recessive disorder caused by the recessive HbSS genotype. To directly address your question, the HbA allele is still partially dominant over the HbS allele, hence why a heterozygous individual experiences much more of the benign features than the disease symptoms.

I disagree with this! I have the trait and in high (hot) temperatures and exhausting situations ( such as high intensite exercising for example) I feel pain, problems breathing and some dizziness! There isn't a lot of money to be made in further research of the impact of having the trait and how it can influence other illnesses ( such diabetes, heart conditions, lungs and kidneys) and even the absorption of medications. It's only when black sports ppl die that we get a bit more pertinent information. Very sad💔

oh wow that explains a lot.. i thought i was allergic to the sun or something (joking but not really) like it would get really bad to where heat was unbearable and painful not just “miserable” like most people get

Medicosis Perfectionalis I believe they probably made a mistake, but their overall comment was “your comment about the sickle cell trait is 100% wrong. The trait comes with a lot more complications. While I don’t agree with the 100% part, their overall sentiment is correct. The trait actually doesn’t need that “extreme” of a condition to cause complications. Often those with the trait have iron deficiency anemia as well. We suffer swollen lose extremities and heart rate differences. Heat, athletic exercise and other normal activities cause complications that have traditionally been ignored by the medical community due to racial biases. Athletes and service members are known to die during training and events when not closely monitored. It is not as acute as full sickle cell anemia, but it should be monitored closely.

You’re correct. It’s just less severe than the sickle cell disease/anemia.
