In this video, we conduct our very own crash tests to compare PSB approved helmets VS a ECE certified helmet VS a helmet that has no safety certification AT ALL!!
Why is there a need to have duplicate testing of safety standards for riders in Singapore? Watch this video to find out more as we share our concerns and our opinions on the matter.

Excellent video. And we do hope authority do their study before setting any rules. We understand their concern about our safety but such kind of incident doesn't shows well on themselves. (Is PSB in funding problem??) Instead of just imposing new rules, they should focus on educating campaign and not just simply impose new rules (without much consideration). Suggestion in video about inclusive of international standard or 1 time test for qualification is very practical as it holds the manufacturer accountable for their product standard. Kudos for Triple 333 in making this video.

There are branded helmets which are cheaper in other countries. I suspect they want to prevent you to self-import them, or get them by air.

great and prompt! indeed this policy is way too idiotic...however it does make good commercial sense to specific individuals/companies. i still cannot believe the policy makers are actually doing this to harm the utmost safety of local riders! most of the psb approved helmets available in the market are trash.

In the past, when I first ride (back in 90's), those international standards helmet are too expensive for me. And I choose PSB approved as its my life at stake. We riders knows what is good helmet. Especially if we had an accident and survive. So authority should focus on educational video like this. For those "unknown" brand, they need to get at least PSB approved. This i will support but now the recent rule - ONLY PSB Approved.
@wazhrmghg
@wazhrmghg 3 года назад
@@rogerlim6065 exactly man. there are many alternative ways for the authority to regulate the safety standard instead of ONLY PSB. "safety concerns" is not a valid excuse for the law makers to do so, we cannot accept this stupid move which is profitable for some but harmful for all.

The PAP probably won't budge on this because motorcyclists are not in their radar of "people to please". That said, I think the helmet shops in Singapore will have to do some workaround strategies where they agree to import a certain model in larger quantities and negotiate to split the cost of testing (1-2 helmets per batch) with the manufacturer. If we have say, 3-4 shops along with the manufacturer, the cost might become manageable. Of course, this is not an ideal solution and recognising international standards should be the way, but what can you do?

20 years ago, i bought a psb approved helmet. It cracked after hitting the ground from the height of my bike seat. Never care about psb helmets all these time. I buy and wear what is safe to me.

TLDR: I blame the motorcycle businesses. I used to feel pissed at LTA for this rule, then I thought about it and realised that it's not that they think the PSB safety standards are super great, but to ensure the batch has been tested before going on sale to prevent counterfeit helmets with fake ECE / SNELL / DOT stickers being sold here. Now, I blame the helmet shops who purposely don't send their stock for batch testing just to maintain profits. This greed is fcking the helmet market the same way dealers have fcked the COE system. Riders are the ones who suffer

The PAP allows these to happen as a feature, not a bug. Pro business and collect more money. Why not? Singaporeans still vote for them.
@lenkiatleong
@lenkiatleong 3 года назад
2 reasons that i can think of why need PSB approved helmets. 1) To prevent fake helmets which may have DOT, Snell or ECE stamps. It's hard to determine whether the imported ones by individuals are fake or not. 2) To protect local distributors who respect rule of law going through PSB testing and paid for them. Yes, if the importers are credible and import genuine helmets with DOT, Snell or ECE, they are not a problem. What if they are unscrupulous and import fake ones? Its really hard to diff between fake and real ones nowadays as the fake ones have improved a lot recently too. Watch the video below. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5gJtAt-J6nw.html

The ECE norm requires that the ECE approval tag is sewn irremovable onto the strap. They can still put a sticker outside the shell, but what counts is only the sewn in tag.

Bumping. In addition to what is being said, I urge the authorities to reconsider the requirement for DD-locks. It is proven that the total force needed to tear a DD lock open is greater as compared to a micro-lock. However, the test showed, that the force needed to tear a micro-lock open is so huge that it will separate the human head completely off from the neck. Therefore, the greater tear resistance of a DD Lock is of theoretical value only. If my head is torn off, I will have other problems than what lock was build into the helmet. And btw, the ECE Norm tests this, plus several other aspects which you would not have the funds for testing here in Singapore.

When I started riding, I also questioned why PSB approved. And even took some time to look at all the various helmet crash tests on RU-vid. Then I came to realise, ultimately the shops selling the non-PSB helmets are responsible right? Since SNELL/DOT/ECE is more stringent then PSB, I don't think those helmets will fail the PSB testing. So why not get them approved? Just because they want to save cost? Standing from laws and insurance claim standpoint, shouldn't riders be asking for more helmets to be sent for PSB approval so that we can have more varieties of approved helmets to choose from? Yall also keep saying those 4 digits helmets are safer then 3 digits PSB-approved helmet. But how? Did yall get into similar magnitude of accidents while wearing different helmets to come to this conclusion? I do agree some PSB approved helmets are questionable, especially open-face ones. But in SG, with defensive riding and keeping within speed limit, I think a mid-range priced full-faced helmet is more than sufficient for general safety protection. I think the focus should be pushing PSB to up their standards and reduce the cost of sending helmets for testing and not push for non-psb approved helmet to be approved. That being said, if PSB were to align themselves with the international standards on their testing, will you still consider non-psb approved helmets then?
@krollpeter
@krollpeter Год назад
In Europe every helmet on the road has to comply with ECE, even the cheapest one that you can buy has to follow the same set of rules. A 600 Euro Shoei is not better than a 100 Euro unbranded, at least not in terms of safety. That is what the ECE norm did for riders. But Singapore would has neither the machines nor the funds to test all that what Europe tests. The market is simply too small, compared.

They are regularly doing such things . Making us lose respect with the authorities when in actual fact our govt is good ..those civil servants need to use their grey matter and stop doing stupid things. I wish the ministers will look into all these and stop letting their subordinates come out with all these ridiculous policies .NEA lately with the scrapping of the 10 years cycle motorcycles is another case in point. So many untruths to justify their own agenda.

Hey Mr Bollocks man! Thank you for watching and commenting!! We think that using off-road helmets on road everyday day maybnot be a good idea. While it allows more air through and looks better, sound damping isn't nearly as good as with the better helmets out there, permanently harming your hearing. Perhaps you can consider using an off-road helmet only when you're off-road riding and a " proper " one on road.

Now arai n shoei with snell is useless already. If u think arai n shoei even after 5 years, their helmet parts become obsolete. So with their over price tag and no parts to replace, it is time to change to caberg flyon carbon helmet. Cheaper and not bad too. Singaporeans must change mentality. Helmet and motorcycle are mode of transportation. No need arai or shoei. No need big bike. Ride like apek². Use duro tires. 😂

I think its becoz these helmet cost $500-$800 and to send for PSB testing it will cost more to retailers. Why would they send the helmet to PSB when SNELL AND ECE Safety standards are internationally recognised. Some more to send batches of these expensive helmet, retailers had to mark up the price of these helmets just to sell profit. I hope LTA recognised that SNELL Safey Certification Test is abt the same if not, more rigorous then PSB testing. I say this because i did a research in safety helmets for different uses (e.g motorcycle, mtb, bmx, skateboarders) If PSB is rigorous enough, means motoGP can wear Mhr jipang helmets liao 🤣
