The thing about this movie that made me really like it. Is the non US-ending. The ending I watched was when we thought Sarah made it, but then she wakes up in the cave again. It really made an inpact. And fits the movie better I think. Thank you for watching it! 😃

I never liked this movie much, but if the version I'd watched ended like this one, I'd have actively DISliked it. The "other ending" (apparently) was the one thing that brought the movie up from "B movie" to "not that bad, but not that good either" in my view.

Also, the filmmakers set out to make a movie where the audience would believe they're invested in a certain type of movie only to have the rug pulled out mid-way through....a sub-genre switcheroo if you will, where the shift from survival-flick to creature-feature would not only come without warning for the audience DURING... but the wool would be pulled over their eyes for the marketing as well. It was a bold move when you consider studios don't generally benefit from deceiving their audiences... and general audiences don't like to be deceived or played with too much either. Anyway, It's small enough of a film to take that risk and the studio did indeed market and release The Descent without revealing anything about the monsters. Audiences appreciated the surprise and the film was a sleeper hit in the UK. Then America went and fucked up everything! Not only was the film (as you point out) drastically changed for the worse, but the US marketing-team made no effort to conceal the plot's surprises... the monsters were all over the trailers and TV spots.. In any case, the film is effective whether one knows about the cave-creatures or not (it's just a good movie)... but I'm sure the experience was enhanced from being surprised.. But, there is certainly no excuse for the editorial choices in content the US made. It was a typical "audiences can't handle downer endings" hatchet job we've come to expect from Hollywood.

the US version is stupid...it doesn't fully justify the story...the Descent is a film with double meaning...it doesn't just mean "the descent into a cave" it also means the descent into madness so the British version is WAY better it explains the story so much better...it has more scenes and the part where you think Sarah escapes is the best...the fact they took that out ruined it...

in the extended ending "After hallucinating the image of Juno, Sarah awakens in the cave, her entire escape having been revealed to be part of the same hallucination. She sits up to see Jessica sitting across from her, holding a birthday cake. As Sarah smiles the shot widens to reveal that the cake's birthday-candlelight is actually the light of her torch. Fun facts about this movie: You can see the creatures in the backgrounds of some scenes well before they first "appear"... The original ending has Sarah waking up in the cave still, and there's fan theories that the creatures were Sarah's hallucinations and that Sarah is actually the one that killed everyone.. The first reveal of the creatures was the actresses first time seeing it, too.. This movie is fantastic, the claustrophobic feel really messed with my claustrophobia, and just made the horror aspect so much more thrilling.. I made my mom watch it, cause she has claustrophobia too, and she was super anxious the whole movie just because of the caves

@Nexils

I don't think the theory holds a lot of water. Other characters interact with the creatures, too, even when Sarah's not around. And when Juno accidentally mortally wounded Beth, she did not react frightened about Sarah approaching her, either.

There are two versions of this film with different endings. This one, which I believe was the US theatrical release, and another for, I guess everywhere else. They are identical except the other version has an additional scene that follows the final scene of this version. I'm sure you can guess what happens, but I won't spoil it for you. I'm sure it's on RU-vid. There is a sequel that is not so good but IMO, still worth watching for a couple of reasons which I also won't spoil. The sequel presumes that the ending of the American release is the "true" ending and it picks up from there.

There’s a Director’s Cut of this film with added scenes throughout and an extended ending. Originally the cut it appears you saw is the U.S. release & the Director’s Cut was an international release. The added scenes throughout the movie aren’t really important but the extended ending really is different. I don’t want to spoil it but it is a way different ending that I prefer but I would honestly skip the sequel as it undoes both endings and really felt like a slap in the face, one of those classic horribly bad sequels.

One of my favourite horror films ever. A little fun fact I haven't seen anyone mention yet - not a single scene was filmedina real cave as it was(rightly) deemed too dangerous. And when the girls get separated Neil Marshall(director)made a smart choice by having them use different light sources to help the audience differentiate them in the dark. On a personal note, I feel Juno gets way too much undeserved hatred. She had an affair, which was horrible, absolutely. But she Does obviously feel horribly guilty about it and does everything she can to save anyone she can(except ofcourse Beth who was beyond saving)She does have morals and she Does care Bout others is what I'm saying. Also, David Julyan's music is so amazing. And as other people have stated - the original version cuts to Sarah back in the cave hallucinating her daughter with the birthday cake. As the camera pans out we see her alone with a torch instead of the birthday cake illuminating the scene. As you mention, Sarah has been hallucinating the entire time(because of her PTSD)which is why the scene ends with her in the cave(regardless ifthat was the Original intention or not)because even though she Did make it out, her mind snapped even further and is still trapped in the cave.

Juno only wanted to save anybody mainly Sarah purely because she still feels guilty for having an affair with her BEST FRIENDS husband and also trying to make up for not being there because she was grieving over another woman's husband she was so fake and really got all of her friends killed it was all her fault all she had to do was be honest with the group and again only wanted to go and let her and sarah name it again is all to help HER feel less guilty

@@scorpiongurlz89 since when did we decide that a Mistake should be punishable by death and torture. Juno didn't Plan for this to happen, it wasn't her intent to get anyone hurt and when all is said and done - who the Fuck could have possible foreseen that the cave would be filled with Monsters. That's like you and me arguing about which film to watch, I win the argument, we watch my film and it turns out that films was cursed. Is it Because of me that we're in that situation now, yes, yes we are, because My Actions and Choices lead us there. Now, is it my Fault..? Fuck no, how would I(or you)have known that. If we were watching a digital copy of the Necronomicon which said "Press play to begin curse" on it, yeah, that'd be one me. Junos fuck up was choosing an uncharted cave, that was stupid(even if it came from a good place)decision, indeed. However, as we see, had the girls not encountered the crawlers they all, most likely, would have made it out fine.

I really think the creatures went though the same thing, used to be normal humans but evolved in the cave. I honestly would have loved if there actually weren't any monsters at all - but if at the end it turned out to be Sarah who killed them all in the cave and just imagined some strange monsters who did. Sarah falls down and hits her head so often - or shortly after the tunnel collapsed - she was out for a few seconds, somehow it would have been cool if that was the point that kinda triggered her + that they are stuck down there that also changed what she thinks is really happening from that moment on - in the beginning she also was the only one who heard or saw strange things before the monsters visibly appeared to all of them - I like to think that this is really an in her head, like the monster inside her threatening to come out. But I'm fine with the monsters too, the design is REALLY convincing, they look so slimey all over their body - somehow a little shapeless but with enough features to make out a somewhat soft and gooey human form. Don't watch the second movie if you want all of the amazing things in this movie to be destroyed..... it's just.... HORRIBLE. xD The way they shot the movie here in the first film - which made it SO good like in a real cave - all claustrophobic and stuff - well - they completely f*cked it up in the second one. The way it was done completely destroyed the atmosphere. At least that's my opinion.

As others have mentioned, they did change the ending from the original, by taking off the last few minutes where it shows Sarah sitting back in the cave, as sort of an alternate ending, with a birthday cake on the floor between her & her daughter. And it gave the title double meaning, meaning not just a descent into the earth, but a descent into madness. So no one made it out in the original cut. But then they came out with a sequel, with Sarah leading rescuers back to the cave, to rescue anyone that may have survived, so I'm sure the decision to take that last few minutes off happened in order to support the sequel.

It's creepy and trippy, claustrophobic like The Descent, and the sound design is great. It came out around the end of the found footage trend (which is why it didn't get much attention i think), but it was a good one, IMO. EDIT: also, good news! they didn't shoot in real caves at all for the "interior" scenes. It's all sets carved out of foam and plaster. There are some really cool behind-the-scenes videos about this movie, including extras goofing around in monster costumes.

This is one of my favourites horror movie! I really like this movie :) 2000s horror movies have a certain feel to it, have a lot of favourites for horror during this era xD I have a suggestion: *Cabin Fever (2002)*

One of my favorite horror movies. Recently rewatched it with my mom (her first time watching it). She was so tense the whole time that at the end of the movie, she said "My jaw fucking hurts!" 😂

Love this movie!! I think you guys should do an 80’s slasher series. Movies like Happy Birthday To Me, The Funhouse, Hell Night, Madman, Slumber Party Massacre, He Knows You’re Alone, etc; Those are the types of movies I grew up watching, and it would be fun to see them from a fresh perspective all these years later!❤️

The creatures in this movie remind me of wendigos, which I first learned of from the cult classic video game Until Dawn, by Supermassive games! Highly underrated, excellent game.

I recommend watching the making of documentary because you'll see that these caves were all set pieces created and repurposed--all shot inside of a sound studio. It's really ingenious.

This whole movie is such a butt clencher! I remember seeing it a couple years after it came out and iirc I read that all of those sets were built and moved around to look like different cave structures. Pretty wild how real it looks, even almost twenty years later!

The great thing about The Descent is that while you're waiting for the creature stuff to get going it's actually a pretty thrilling, claustrophobic cave adventure movie.

I found this movie to be a lot of fun, though it's difficult to watch the end, as in the gag reel in the extra's, the bit where she's looking up the slope of bones, they stuck an illuminated 'Exit' sign at the top, so it just makes me laugh each time! As a suggestion, I think you might like to take a look at the 2008 movie 'Splinter' by Kai Barry, Ian Shorr and Toby Wilkins, some considerably gorey moments, but an enjoyable horror/monster movie overall :D

The budget for the film was £3.5m. Total. They filmed the outside shots in Scotland (which is why it has UK road marking in that shot with the logging truck), and the interiors were soundstage in Pinewood studios. Neil Marshall may be one of the greatest low budget directors around

Just saw this movie for the first time yesterday It was great to experience it via someone else again so quickly And yeah like the rest of the commenta, you should def check out the original ending. The US cutting to credits after a jump scare just doenst fit the tone and the real ending gives the payoff for all the birthday cake shots
