Sneslow Swallet is a natural cave system residing below the limestone hills just above Castleton.
At 46m in depth it requires the use of SRT (single rope techniques) to access the cave.
There are two entrances to this cave system, one being an exposed shaft and the other being a restricted series of pitches.
The surrounding area is considered a honey pot location for cavers with numerous other sporting cave systems within walking distance.
These limestone caves likes many others within the white peak region of the peak district national park have been shaped over millions of years through a process called chemical weathering.
This is a process where rain water absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere which in turn dissolves the limestone gradually expanding small fissures resulting in the cave systems we know today.
The limestone here dates back around 350 million years to the carboniferous period but the caves within them are much younger.
Likely forming within the last few million years.
The limestone caves within the peak district are well known for there impressive formations, underground rivers and large chambers.
There is a wide variety of natural systems in the area ranging from tight claustrophobic passages to chambers big enough to hold a church cathedral.
Back in 2019 Sneslow Swallet was briefly shut off to cavers whilst volunteers from the Derbyshire caving association made needed repairs.
This including repairing a shaft and removing loose wooden platforms and ladders which posed a risk of falling on cavers below.
The work was completed and the cave is now open to cavers for a mere 3 pound trespass fee
At the bottom of the cave is a dig which has been somewhat abandoned, there is still however potential for a breakthrough into another nearby system for anyone willing to put the time and energy in.

Peak Caving Club is a Derbyshire based caving club with members from all over the UK.
Our community (now over 1000 strong and growing!) welcomes both new and experienced cavers providing opportunities to learn, share and enjoy the underground spaces beneath our feet safely.
We host trips every weekend and plenty midweek around the Derbyshire area to keep our members busy.
There's also regular trips throughout the year taking us to hotspot caving locations across the UK such as the Yorkshire Dales, Wales, the Mendips and many more.
