Sony FE 85mm f1.4GM vs 135mm f1.8 GM - Battle of the Bokeh / G-Master Clasher 

Love the 135 look but don't like the working distance. Waiting for the so called rumored 100/105mm GM lens!

I own both and love each one.

knot head if you shot it for two years plus then that means you were most likely using the second gen Sony system (A7RII/A7II). Sony’s AF abilities improved with the third gen systems (A9/A7RIII/A7III). Which explaines why my experience with the 85mm GM wasn’t as bad as it was with yours. I was shooting on the A7RIII

I like the 85 GM more. The face is not so flatten as 135 GM does

I will probably go with 85mm 1.4 sigma dg dn :) however 135mm gm is amazing, also have tried it with a7r III and a7r iv. But for me is too heavy and large.

That could be true. The 135mm is almost too sharp. I think I saw a report that said it was one of the sharpest lenses made based on charts. But the 85mm is plenty good for me, based on what I saw.

@@Photomeike yea, I thought so as well. But the 135mm is a beautiful lens man. I think I might just go with that. I don't want a f4 lens and I don't want to spend 2k on the 70-200 G master. But if I do get the G Master 70-200 I won't lose.

If you are asking me. I already chose. I brought the Z6 last Nov when it came out. If you are asking what I would recommend to someone with no dog in the fight. Then I would recommend the A7III or RIII because they offer great value for the dollar and Sony’s system is much more mature than Nikon’s.

I love the 105mm. It’s an awesome focal length. It’s like bear that’s just right in the Goldielocks story. BUT! The Sigma 105mm f1.4 is HUGE. So if you can get over the size then I would go for the 105. But I would probably use the 85mm more just because it’s easier to carry and close enough to the 105. The 135 is amazing but the working distance makes it not as useful as the 85 or 105 for me.

The 50mm can be used for portraits but it is not the traditional portrait focal length that most experts recommend. Usually, people recommend 85mm and up for more flattering portraits. The 85mm f1.8 is an option and I mentioned it, but It's not a G-Master and that was the theme of the video. The 100mm is cool and has pretty bokeh, but it's an f2.8 and the T-Stop is f5.6. Might as well have a 70-200 for all that. Plus the STF 100 is not a very popular lens.

Wait you’ve never heard people say that the 85mm focal length (or higher) is more flattering for head shots and such. Because of the compression and the reduced distortion.

@@Photomeike I am not arguing that point at all, Ike (even though I choose lenses that suit the model and the environment). Sorry but what you said in the video was just not true and I am sure that you did not mean it that way. I am just not understanding what exactly you meant by the statement that those two GM's are the only native portrait lenses available. There is the 90mm f2.8 macro (the 'expert' Miguel Giles has a video for portraiture about that), the 24-70GM (that was actually another magazine cover shoot I have done, actually a few), the 55 f1.8 (you know who uses that one for weddings). They are all excellent portrait lenses.

The DroneMonkey it is a great portrait lens. One of the best. Just make sure you are in areas that give you a good amount of space to back up if you want to do full body shots.

Yeah the 135 is definitely more of an intentional focal length because of how much working distance it requires. I also did a video on my channel using the Sigma 105 vs the 135 if you want to see more images with the 135. I’m a fan of the focal length but it’s not something you can just like pick up and use anytime you want like you can with the 85.

@@Photomeike I totally agree... 85 versatility is nicer but open wide i tend to peep on that chromatic aberration...its fixable in post so no complaints... funny that you mention the sigma 105, i was eyeing that as well but the damn thing is not only built like a tank but looks like one also lol...

It really does produce great looking images. It’s just a pain if you want to do full body because you have to stand so far back.

@@Photomeike I know I actually have a old sears 135mm 2.8 manual lens that my uncle randomly gave me last month & I adapted it to my A7II , I've only tested it a few times haven't had a chance to use it on a photoshoot yet but I'm used to standing back for photos I did a outside wedding with a 300mm f 2.8 last weekend & only used the 85mm for the full wedding party shots & the inside reception.
