This video really made me appreciate what Homecoming did to subvert the tropes we've seen develop through the over saturation of the superhero market, and the over saturation of the Spider-man market. Homecoming understood its place as the second Spidey reboot in the last 20 years, and used this to its advantage by allowing itself to tread new ground rather than go through the same plot points we've seen time and time again through the previous 6 movies.
@deffdefying4803

Spiderman Homecoming is currently my favorite movie. I'm 15, and when I first saw it, I was going through a really bad time with my depression. I was convinced I wasn't going to get better, and I just spiraled endlessly and was in one of the worst places I have been in a while. Then, the movie was just kinda...sweet. It was a id who wanted to do good things, overestimated himself, got wrapped up in his own head, then kept trying. His whole arc about losing the suit made me feel like maybe I could work through this stuff, even when I didn't feel like I could. It just made me feel more hopeful, and I turn to it whenever I feel really down. It really helped me out of a funk.

The Raimi trilogy had one HUGE advantage over Homecoming: JK Simmons as J Jonah Jameson. It's like the man was born for that role, perfect casting. EDIT: 1. I know he's been cast as JJJ again. A dozen people have commented that, adding yet another comment saying the same thing is useless so don't. 2. This JJJ is the same name but is a lame excuse and different character altogether. It will never be as good as the Raimi JJJ.

I'd forgotten everything about this video except that it blew my mind with its core thesis, and that has happened once again. Did an excellent job at underlining the cores of each Spidey franchise, and why I like Raimi's so much better. That Spiderman is doing everything by himself. His stressful but manageable civilian life is stretched to and past its breaking point all the time because he always chooses to save people. His relationships are damaged, his academics are sabotaged, he loses jobs, and he keeps saving people.
@Mokkari77
@Mokkari77 7 лет назад
Excellent points. Both the Raimi Spider-Man movies and Homecoming are true to the original comics in different ways. The nicer, friendlier New York of HOMECOMING is appropriate for Tom Holland's very young Peter Parker. I think it's easier to see 27 year old Toby Maguire struggle with the much harsher and meaner world of Raimi's movies.

Homecoming honestly made MJ's character better since she's not even considered the love interest, she's a sarcastic, lightheartedly scathing teen girl who considers herself and Peter and Ned to be losers and that they're all in the same boat. She just kind of goes to the protagonist's school and follows him around at a middle distance to poke him in the ribs from time to time, and crack jokes from time to time, and then inadvertently manages to be peripheral to her friends getting into trouble. That's basically what being a classmate of the protagonist of a superhero movie is like - they have a chaotic aura that irradiates you, landing you or your friends in some shit and you can't help it. Raimi MJ's most prominent character trait, if not _the_ character trait, is her being the love interest. She gets into some shit, Spiderman saves her, they kiss. They might even have romantic drama once or twice like in Spiderman 3.

I was trying to figure out what why Homecoming rubbed me the wrong way. I enjoyed it, but I could not wrap my mind around why I didn't completely enjoy it. You just nailed the reason completely. Everyone loves Peter in this universe, and there are literally no personal consequences for him being Spider-Man. Aunt May freaks out at one point, but doesn't ground him, or reprimand him, she just wags her finger at him and says "you scared me" [paraphrasing]. The closest thing we have to a consequence is that Peter doesn't get the girl he has a crush on, because she doesn't understand he's spider-man, and we get the sense that he barely knew her anyway so...

1000% agreed. Whenever Homecoming looked like it could push into a weightier more earnest/harrowing moment for the character, it seemed like the director got scared and backed off just a little bit. It's a shame, because the performers are really strong, and I think they can take the characters to those places. Fingers crossed for some actually emotional Peter/May scenes in the follow up. Also, No more tech Spidey suit...and lastly, I'll bet the events of Infinity War might affect the universe in such a way that the public isn't as fond of Spidey in future movies. I definitely see them moving in a direction in keeping with that classic Spidey relationship with the public.
@doubledown0411
@doubledown0411 7 лет назад
Spider-man having a frosty relationship with the public doesn't fit with our modern world and the way we consume media now. It worked in the 60's because a Newspaper like the Bugle had huge influence on public opinion. But now, with Social Media, the "Spider-man as a menace" wouldn't fit or work. Plus New York is a different city now than it was in the 60's and 70's. It's even different than it was when Raimi made Spider-Man. It's a gentried, multi-cultural, relatively safe city now. It's not the crime ridden hellscape it was before. Spider-Man should reflect the city he grew up in.
@jimkettner8363
@jimkettner8363 7 лет назад
If anything the writers will be working digital platforms into the story as a way that the people in Peter's life react to Spider-Man. Think about it. Blogging and twitter have certainly not made the public LESS divisive on say...if Spidey is a hero or a menace. I agree that the old school newspaper angle will change, but the heart of that story...of Spidey's intentions being misconstrued and misunderstood by the media, won't. And as someone who grew up in New York...even 21st century New Yorkers can find ways to disagree with each other about pretty much anything. ;-)

Wait how could the public not be fond with Spiderman after Infinity War? He actively helped and was dusted through no fault of his own, if anything Peter Quill would be the black sheep for not controlling his anger for like a second longer while Spiderman was just about to get the gauntlet off Thanos.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is my favorite on screen iteration of Spider-Man honestly. He’s actually played by a teen which is great, and Tom Holland has done suuuuuch a good job with the role.

Just like the line in spider-verse when they say something like: but above all a Spider-Man always keeps getting up! That made me cry. Just like now, when you described the Raimi universe and how it's so powerful! Well I didn't cry this time, but my eyes got so watery. What a beautiful hero, the Spidey is. ❤️🥺

Spider man homecoming is tied for best representation imo. Rami's movies and Homecoming both accurately portray aspects of the character, but honestly I don't think any movie has done the character perfectly. Homecoming lacked bite to me personally; I don't remember any real fight or direct conflict, there were engagements but it was mostly the environment utilised which didn't feel impactful enough. The comedy came less from Peter being quippy and sly and more from him being the butt of the joke and failing comically (which has merits obviously) but after a while started to feel like a diversion from his character. There was one fantastic scene where Peter is trapped and has to lift and object that even with super strength he has no right to move, which references one of the most iconic moments in the comics, but even that was bittersweet because I feel like that scene might very made a perfect crescendo in a later film where Peter could be facing a much lower point. Also am I the only one who thinks we really need an Into the Spiderverse film where Toby and Andrew reprise their roles as Spiderman and return as hyperbolies of their characters in the previous films. Can you imagine a hyper emotional Maguire and Ultra-sexualised Garfield acting with the relatively normal, level-headed and now canonical Tom Holland. Would also satisfy all fans of previous films and neatly tie up in a bow all the previous reboots. IT'S AU FAAMMM

Best thing to take away from Homecoming: it has a much more "natural" feel than previous attempts. There's no "style" at work to make the movie cool. It keeps loose and fun which is really what Spidey is about. Also on a side note, the villian is given his introduction first much like the Joker in TDK. Always a good way to open a film and set things up. Good stories begin with the villian not the hero.
@iansmart4158
@iansmart4158 7 лет назад
None of this is true, and while we all have our own tastes, there is nothing you said that can't be refuted by evidence in other films. No shade, bro just saying.
@themichealproject20
@themichealproject20 7 лет назад
what are you trying to refute exactly? No shade taken.
@iansmart4158
@iansmart4158 7 лет назад
tHE idea of a villain being introduced first meaning he is somehow more compelling and the idea that "natural" is somehow inherently better than apparent style. It works best on a case by case basis, and I'm sure most would argue that the situations surrounding superheros are the most unnatural phenomena so an absence of any kind of style or perspective might hurt those films more than help. I mean, look at Logan, Deadpool, The Avengers, TDK these films are impactful because of style. These films aren't trying to be Before Sunrise level of natural but more of a heightened reality. That's all i meant.
@xsanguine8
@xsanguine8 7 лет назад
The point is that, in this movie, heroes are common, so you need to flesh out the villain that is going against them. You also can't impose a major style change, when this is just part of a bigger world.

I grew up in the inner city and I remember thinking to myself that high school is nothing like they portray it in 90210 or regular high school movies. Cool kids, gangbangers, geeks, jocks, busties, we all saw each other in the same parties. So I actually thought this movie was way more accurate in portraying schools in dense populations. And Hey Arnold is my favorite cartoon growing up. It was the only cartoon that understood what ghetto neighborhoods are like in the inner city.

She pointed out the issue I had with the movie, there was no conflict or (my own personal issue) sense of danger. Throughout the movie Peter never gets hurt, he never bleeds or is bruised, he gets beat up a ton but always seems to be fine. Also small potential spoiler, but he does not react to his hands being burned in the end when you clearly hear the sizzling sound used in movies to indicate a burn. So basically no sense of danger for Peter and as Jenny pointed out there was no conflict. Some amounts of conflict appeared to be in the movie but it never really culminated in anything. Everything ended up okay and the conflict never really caused any change in Peter or repercussions he had to learn from or deal with. Don't get me wrong it was a good movie and I like this iteration of Spiderman, I just left the movie feeling like I enjoyed the small bit Spiderman had in Civil War more than his own movie.

Christian E Oh yeah, no repercussions, no conflict, no learning at all. Oh, except when Peter almost drowned in the lake, or when he’s stuck under the building, or the creepy intense car ride with Vulture, his suit getting taken away, helping to spur him on and remember that HE is Spider-Man, the fact that his hero life constantly complicates his normal life, and the fact that the events in the movie caused Peter to realize his boundaries and that he’s not ready for the big leagues just yet.
@RM-cn8pw
@RM-cn8pw 6 лет назад
Gonzalo No he literally didn’t. Tony didn’t come to save Peter from under the building, or during his final fight with the Vulture, or anything in Washington. Homecoming explores the struggle of Peter Parker with his identity as a superhero and a high school kid. It takes the phrase “With great power comes great responsibility,” and looks into what it really means for Peter.

Your perspective on movies is always very intriguing. It's not easy to find people willing to give non-subjective viewpoints on subjects. You look at the plot development and audience's emotions and character development, while most people look at special effects and actors. I wish there were more kinds of people like you in the world to have an intellectual conversation with. Cool shirt by the way.

New subscriber after watching your intellegent and witty commentary on the greatest show man. My young boys prefer the Homecoming Spiderman because of Iron Man. Interestingly Iron Man provided some of the only objections or push back that Peter faced, but even he was supporting him in the end. Great thoughts.

I hated him not being naturally inclined to shoot webs though?? Like, he has small little canisters of web fluid and I don't get why they did that change?? Also, his Spidey sense isn't there and instead his suit got Ironman-ified to alert him when something happens.. I dunno, I do think that the mix of Toby Maguire's and Tom Holland's Peter Parker would make the next to perfect version of him
