On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (Monday December 18th, 2017) Mark Ellis, Jon Schnepp, Kristian Harloff, Ashley Mova discuss the following:
1) Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Delivers Second Largest Opening Ever; Fans Split on Rotten Tomatoes
2) Box Office Report
3) Oscar Isaac in Talks to Voice Gomez Addams in Animated ‘Addams Family’ Movie
4) '48 Hrs.' Remake in the Works With 'Good Time' Filmmakers
5) ‘Laddie’ Trailer: Meet The Man Who Made ‘Star Wars’ Possible
6) Mail Bag
7) Live Twitter Questions
Star Wars: The Last Jedi delivered on expectations, debuting over the weekend with the second largest opening of all-time, behind only Star Wars The Force Awakens. With an estimated $220 million, The Last Jedi got off to a strong start on Thursday night with the second largest preview ever with $45 million and became the second film to ever gross over $100 million on opening day. Audiences also gave the film an "A" CinemaScore, matching the score for Force Awakens, however; the Rotten Tomatoes audience score for Last Jedi is currently 56% vs. a 93% score from critics - with an increasing backlash happening online between those fans who enjoyed the movie and those who did not.
BOX OFFICE REPORT
BUY OR SELL
According to a report from The Tracking Board, Oscar Isaac has been cast as the voice of Gomez Addams in the animated The Addams Family movie for Sausage Party director Conrad Vernan. The roles of Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsley, Lurch and Uncle Fester have yet to be filled, apparently because the studio wants to close a deal with Isaac before approaching anyone else.
THR reports that Benny and Josh Safdie, the brother filmmaking team behind the Robert Pattinson thriller Good Time, will take on a remake of 48 Hrs. for Paramount Pictures. 48 Hrs. is the classic comedy that helped launch the big-screen career of Eddie Murphy, as well as the buddy-cop genre. Murphy and Nick Nolte starred as a convict and cop, who must team up to catch a pair of killers within 48 hours. A release date has not been determined.
Star Wars Underworld found and posted the first trailer for ‘Laddie,” the documentary about Alan Ladd Jr, AKA Laddie, the man at 20th Century Fox who gave George Lucas the greenlight and freedom to make Star Wars back in 1977. The documentary dives into Ladd as an agent, producer, executive, and studio head, where he worked on movies ranging from Alien to Young Frankenstein to Star Wars over the course of his long, storied career.

I'm so glad I skipped every review and reaction and went into Last Jedi cold. The result was a film that I liked more and more as it went along (and the jokes died down a bit). By the third act I was on the edge of my seat until the end.

Laura H. Horsfall It was great. I liked FA and R1 but they were candy. It was tasty fun. But LJ sticks with you and makes you dwell on it. It was bold, and that's the most Star Wars thing of all.

Ledpooplin55 I'd like to see it again to help digest (because SO much happened in this film) but I my initial reaction is that that's a good assessment. There are moments, sequences, images -- even some dialogue that felt so dramatically strong -- it does make me wish that I could extract some of the jokes, though, because there were a few emotional moments that were punctuated by a one-liner instead of something to reinforce the dynamics of the scene (the "chrome-dome" line comes to mind). Luckily, there were also many moments that were played straight very, very effectively.

Mark, your assessment of the criticisms towards Last Jedi are wrong, Kristian and Jon understood why we had these complaints. The following are the three biggest problems of the movie that span the entire film if you are interested. 1. If Holdo just told Poe her plan, it would mean that there would be no Finn and Rose's useless sideplot, no mutiny, no DJ revealing the secret base on Crait, meaning no pointless loss of life because of failed escape plan, more people saved, Luke won't need to sacrifice himself and die. This is an entire meaningless sequence of events with an extremely uninteresting side plot on Canto Bight that wastes the potential of new characters like Rose, Holdo and DJ, and does a disservice to Finn and Poe, all of them accomplished nothing and could have had been involved in much better plots. Also poor Phasma continued being the most unfulfilling character in Star Wars. 2. Luke's character is completely trampled over in the most insulting way possible, it's so out of character even Mark Hamill himself stated on camera multiple times that he disagrees with it. How did the fearless hero of the rebellion who would risk his life to save his friends and the galaxy become a coward who would hide away on a planet from his friends and the galaxy? How did the son who believed in the tiniest bit of light left in his father, who risked everything to turn him back from the dark and save him from the most evil man in the galaxy, become a shell of a man who attempted the murder of the son of his sister and best friend? And his death is pointless, especially after considering that he wouldn't even need to force project himself across the galaxy to save the resistance if Holdo just told Poe her plan. And it's not like Mark Hamill doesn't want to do any more Star Wars like Harrison Ford, there is no reason to kill Luke besides getting rid of everything old, killing beloved characters like Ackbar and casting them aside like Lando so that Disney can have all the rights for their own original IP. 3. Snoke is nothing, Rei is nobody. They acknowledge that fans of Star Wars has thought of, theorised and discussed huge amounts of lore and speculation and thus have alot of expectations, but instead of upping us with more intriguing lore, they've decided to tell us all we did is literally for nothing. All the canon that is set up in the expanded universe to feed and push us towards speculation and theory felt like nothing but a marketing ploy to drive hype and push us to watch movies, which then tells us that everything we cared for is nothing, the expanded canon and lore does nothing for the movies, no pay off and everything old is cast aside, I feel that all the time I spent on Star Wars has been a waste of my time and money. Because of this I no longer feel attached to Star Wars and have no anticipation for any new Star Wars media. Those are the 3 main problems and on top of that, my personal problem was with the handling of Leia and Carrie Fisher. I was about to mourn when Leia seemingly dies but then they did a double take and completely pulled me out of the moment with her flying. With no context, that is a beautiful scene, like most of the movie, but when you think about it, they are using Carrie Fisher's death to intentionally pull at our heart strings, which is disrespectful and despicable. Leia could have passed away right where she was blown out of the bridge and we would have mourned for her, but no, they pulled her back in the most insulting way possible so that she can most likely be killed again later. This has absolutely nothing to do with Empire Strikes Back, nobody wants to see a rehash, which is why there are so many people who complained about Force Awakens being similar to A New Hope. This is about terrible plot, Luke being out of character and the desecration of canon and lore.

1. The plan was to survive, details were simply need to know especially considering it was a stealth escape. It was Poe & Finn's error for jumping the chain of command and executing their own plan without telling her. If they went to her first she may have told them why it wasn't needed. Yoda explained failure was the best teacher, and all the major characters had opportunities to grow because of the mistakes they were making. The story isn't as interesting if everything goes according to plan. 2. Luke wrestled with the dark side for a long time in the old canon, its nothing new. He may be a legend but he's also a man. Almost striking down Ben and inadvertently pushing him to the dark side was a very traumatic experience. He disappeared because he felt his existence was doing more harm than good. If we just got Luke from the end of RotJ, that wouldn't give the character anywhere to go narratively and he would have just been a side character like Obi Wan. He manages to get a full character arc growing further and finally becomes one with the force signifying the end of his journey, his final act giving hope back to a universe about to fall to the first order. This trilogy is not his story but managed to add something to his journey. Also Mark Hamill clarified he supported the story after his initial misgivings. Everyone knows he'll be back as a force ghost anyway and Disney already owns all of the IP. They make new characters to expand the universe. 3. Ultimately it's not fanfiction, they have their story to tell regardless of what parts the audience want to over analyze. The choices they made all make sense from a story perspective. This trilogy is building up a new generation of characters. Removing Snoke services Kylo's progression (Sith are always supposed to kill and replace the master) and Rey's common parentage is important in returning the idea of the force being everywhere and away from being just a hereditary trait. Also all of Leia's scenes were already shot when she passed. They just chose not to change anything which I feel was the right call and respectful to her last performance. It's fine if some people don't like the movie, but the evil empire (Disney) is not interested in personally offending or actively trying to any segment of the fanbase.

GuyWithAnAmazingHat 1. Why would Haldo tell Poe her plan? She doesnt need to. While the sub plot that spawned from it was something i didnt like, the reason it came about was fine and made sense and spoke to poes character in a way that payed off well later. 2. This has to be a taste thing , because I loved how they handled luke. If you listen to him in the movie, the idea to kill ben was nothing but a flittering whim that came to him in a moment. This is the same luke who saw what happened when a powerful dark sider gained a powerful young apprentice. And for a second he thought he could stop it before it started. But he decided against it, in favour of the better path. But it bit him in the ass, and kylo ren was born. Luke failed to teach kylo the better way, and when it came to it, he pushed ben to become kylo, due to his own hubris. These things happen in life, failure happens. Lukes not used to failure and he couldnt handle it. But he learned his lesson and became the hero we know him to be. 3. I would like to see some sort of background to snoke at some point. I always wanted reys parents to be nobody. Anything else shrinks the universe. And truth be told, I want snoke to be just some dude who got powerful somehow, although we should have found out how. The story is about kylo ren, so im glad the focus is on him now. Just could have done with a tiny bit of background. Now to the carrie fisher stuff. I agree the superman leia stuff looked weird, but leia using the force is something i wanted to see. Also, you do know the whole thing was written and shot before she died. She wasnt brought back to do the later scenes as some sort of tribute to carrie, thats nonsensical. Maybe thats not what you meant, but thats how it sounds. I also really dont get the whole "desecration of canon and lore" stuff. I cant see where anybody is managing to come up with that. I know Im probably not a proper fan because i liked it, as so many people seem to say. I just think many of these criticisms come from a place of not being what was expected, and not that the movie was bad.

Kristian and Ashley Mova nailed it on the head with what's going on with the reactions of Last jedi. Especially Ashley when she talked about the energy of The Last Jedi, something not a lot of people even the critics are talking about. I saw the movie Friday noon and 15 minutes into the movie I felt there was something off about it and it had a lot to do with the energy which is why we getting mix reactions. Am glad Kristian pointed out that there are people out there that didn't like the movie for number of reasons. I do believe some people are afraid to admit that the movie is divisive among the people that saw the movie. I know people talk about the CinemaScore and lets be honest, there are some movies in CinemaScore that have gotten somewhere between A+ to A- from the audience after couple weeks or months, they realize the movie is not good. Iron Man 2 got an A on CinemaScore and that should tell you something.

Rotten Tomatoes is also a piece of garbage if you look at their scores for Sharknado and Sharknado 2... Honestly, I overall liked the movie a lot. The Finn casino arc was weak, yes, but didn't bother me super hard since it wasn't even that long. Everything Luke, Rey and Kylo related was amazing. Poe and Leia were also great (although that Superman Leia moment felt a bit jarring to watch and could have been done in another way). Also, they went a bit overboard with the Porgs and the jokes, but at the end of the day it's Disney (they almost ruined Guardians of the Galaxy 2 with so many jokes it felt like an improvised sitcom most of the time) and they gotta sell dem Porg toys. Phasma and Snoke died a bit too soon, but they can easily bring one of them back (or both) in the next movie, without any problem... In fact, Snoke's dialogue during that scene of him saying that he knows exactly what Kylo was thinking and telling him to strike his true enemy... I think that was Snoke's plan all along, either to complete Kylo's training or maybe for Snoke to be reborn in some way. And Phasma's armor was abnormally durable, so it's not so crazy that she could have survived, maybe with some scars. Keep in mind how Anakin got burned the fuck up and lost most of his lower half and his arms and got severely burned and still managed to survive. Snoke got clean cut in half and his upper half is intact. Also, between the prequels and this movie there were probably some advances in technology, so if it's possible to keep Anakin alive even after what happened to him, Snoke and Phasma can easily be brought back if they want. But at the end of the day those lower points are minor issues that got vastly overshadowed by all the amazing moments we got, specially the third act. Also, to the people complaining Rey coming from nothing is a bad thing, keep in mind Anakin Skywalker also came from nothing and in the middle of nowhere... And the people complaining and saying that Luke "couldn't bring himself to kill Vader but considered killing Kylo". Well dipships, Luke DID consider killing Vader, he chose not to. And ONCE AGAIN, Luke DID consider killing Kylo, but chone not to and stopped himself from doing it. But it was too late 'cause Kylo already saw him holding the light saber and got scared and attacked.

I liked it (a lot), but for me there's also an X factor to it that makes it difficult to judge. Whereas TFA can stand alone to a large degree (like New Hope and Phantom Menace), TLJ feels like the first part of a two-part story. It gives me the impression that it's more integrally tied to whatever is coming next. As such, I have a hard time judging the movie by itself. I do have some issues with it, but I don't know to what degree these issues are actual problems and to what degree they are a setup to a reveal in IX. It's funny because the perception of Star Wars movie (every Star Wars movie) seems to change a lot as time goes by, and I think this might be especially true of TLJ. I suspect (well, hope) that after IX comes out and people have a chance to wrap their heads around the entire trilogy, and the entire sage for that matter, VIII might be viewed more positively in general.

I feel like people who complain about Holdo not letting Poe know what the plan is do not understand how military chain of command works. A Vice Admiral does not answer to a Captain. If she does not see the need to inform him then she is not obligated to. Thats like having a PFC walk up to a 3 Star General and be like "Hey whats the plan buddy".
@miguelm5440
@miguelm5440 6 лет назад
That's true plus she considered him hot headed and given what had happened at the beginning, not trustworthy. Combine that with the plan being only need to know basis, she didn't need to tell him.
@salimprice159
@salimprice159 6 лет назад
ssjcajas there was a need to as her not opening a line of communication resulted in a mutiny. Bad leadership. Also if we are relating it to a real military why doesnt Poe know who she is when shes meant to be second in command. He meets her for the first time when she takes over she is unknown before that no wonder he has questions. Surely in any real military people are aware of who is second in command lol? Or if for some reason they are not it would make sense for that person to have an open line of communication to gain trust and respect.
@ssjcajas
@ssjcajas 6 лет назад
Salim Price He does know about her he has just never seen her. He even says to the alien pilot "Thats Admiral Holdo? Battle of Kyron Belt Admiral Holdo? Not what I expected." Now while I can see where you were coming from about open lines of communication and building trust and all that which would be fine if they had the time. The whole time they were being attacked by the First Order so they had bigger problems to worry about like their fuel problem. Also she wasn't second in command its just that all the other leaders and higher ranked people were killed when the bridge was blown up. She was just the highest ranking officer left.

They all should have been dead by then any way as the Order fleet could have split and hyperjumped there way in front of them. That fact that there was a mutiny shows poor leadership on her part but it fits the very silly(cannons can't shoot that far) 1700's fleet chase plot device.

We as Star Wars fans need to sit down and rewatched the OT to see the flaws and plot holes in those movies as well. We act like those movies were perfect, even the mighty Georgle Lucas was making shit up as he went from movie to movie like Luke having a crush and kissing his own sister or Luke having hardly any training and going to face Darth Vader and gave him a pretty good fight!!!…or the ewoks taking down the whole Empire army on Endor or the mighty Emperor being defeat it by being picked up and thrown down a shaft etc!!!…We need to enjoy this movies like we enjoy the OT without overthinking every scene or character and stop expecting Disney or a particular director to make movies the way we want to. If you dont like the movie thats perfectly fine but some of the reasons for poeple not liking this movie are just ridiculous imho.

I can say that for my own personal tastes, when I compare the OT with the new trilogy, my main observation is the disparity in pacing/editing. And I don't mean that the movies move any faster/slower than the other. But what I've found in my own personal viewing experiencing is that scenes in the OT had a lot more time to develop. I feel myself being allowed to soak in a scene or moment in the OT much better than I do in the new trilogy. For example. comparing the binary star scenes... In the OT I felt like I could really soak in that moment. Possibly the lead up to, and departure from those scenes was less dramatic, so in that moment I could be focused on it. And when I close my eyes, I can vividly picture that scene, and hear the score, as both inform my perspective and narrate that scene. Whereas in TLJ, I felt like we arrived to that scene so abruptly, and it passed so quickly, that when I close my eyes, I can't even remember John Williams score. And though I know the intent of the scene, I wasn't given time to soak in it. Or comparing the cantina scenes in ANH and TFA... In ANH, whether the run time of those scenes was similar or not, I felt like we really got to hang out in that cantina. But in TFA, we get that really fast blurry tracking shot, and the conversation almost immediately goes to how they're going to get out of there. Maybe I just prefer the way Lucas edited a movie, but I just feel like we move at such a torrid pace in these newer films, that we don't get a lot of time to soak in the scenes the way I did in the OT. That collaboration between WIlliams score, and Star Wars story telling is what impacts me so much. I'm just not feeling the same thing with these newer movies. TFA did it better than TLJ, and I still thought that one was too rushed.

As far as I'm concerned this trilogy is a write off, they need one director and writer for a whole trilogy to get a consistent story without having planet-sized plot holes and inconsistencies, otherwise Star Wars will be dead with a decade I have watched tonnes of videos of people saying that after this movie they are done with star wars. Since Disney acquired the Star Wars the games have sucked the books have sucked (Other than lords of the sith) the movies have been incredibly sub-par at best, would you rather a decade of box office hits Disney OR box office hits for decades to come and put in just a little bit of care and respect for the viewers intelligence and to not just accept whatever you put on the screen.

All the hate for this movie blows my mind. Yeah it has flaws, but when people say “it’s terrible” and give it a half star review, they’re just blinded by their own hate. I loved it still. Kylo and Rey were amazing in this one. That fight scene they had together was epic Edit: I see what all the people hating this movie are saying I really do. I didn’t care for Leia pulling a mary poppins, I wish Snoke/the Knights of Ren had a little more back story, some humor was forced, it would be cool if there was a lightsaber battle. Like I said I know it has flaws, but I decide to look at its best moments rather than hate the whole thing because I’m upset with a few things. One thing I will continue to disagree on tho is Luke. People said he was terrible. Well if your nephew turned evil and killed all the Jedi and then burned the Jedi temple you would be shook too. Luke’s character was well written I thought. His story was one of self forgiveness and redemption.

It is perfectly acceptable to argue that TFA was too safe and also to argue at the same time that TLJ is not sufficiently true enough to Star Wars. My problem with TLJ is that it is unfaithful to the character of Luke. If a filmmaker is saying that a character would drastically change his personality and his entire outlook on life, the filmmaker should have a convincing explanation for it. Johnson failed to do that. Are we expected to believe that Luke would think about killing his child nephew while he slept? Are we expected to believe that Luke would abandon his life, his family, friends and everything he has ever believed in because of one student who was turning to the dark side? I mean, seriously? Is that Luke? And that's not even mentioning Rey hoping to redeem Kylo Ren merely days after having witnessed him murder his father in cold blood and critically wound her best friend, Finn. These plot points and character choices for TLJ were stunningly terrible.
@Avarn388

conorfurlong I want to see the movie again just to get a better view, but while I liked it this movie in my view did such a disservice to Luke. I could overlook most of these things had the movie NOT kill him and instead survive. Because really this entire ST in my view has just tossed aside the OT characters and is one giant reset button. Legends isn’t perfect, but at least it respected the OT characters while also allowing the next generation to do so. Really, I may come out with a more positive view on the movie a second time , but I have no interests really in seeing nine. For LF I felt dropped the ball with the lack of planning. i think Luke was masterfully done.... he saw new Vader in him.... he would be the one to kill billions!!!!!.... would you kill Hitler when he was little?... he had little moment of weakness and it turned his world upside down, making it more than reasonable that he just wanted to go away..... he didnt do it with Vader because he knew that he has light in him and only could make things better, he thought he will save lives but only for a brief moment..... its insane how can we as fans cant get on the same page even once with new SW movies

Luke was inches away from turning to the dark side in Return of the Jedi. He wasn't the legend you set him up to be. If Empire Strikes Back taught him anything it was to stay in exile and to not go save his friends. Did you even see the original trilogy? I hate people pretending to be starwars fans. The ending of the return of the jedi. Luke gives in to his rage and unleashes on Vader? Did you really miss that part or are you just being a hipstertroll? Yoda even says it will consume you and turn you to the dark side if you give in to it even a little. Luke gave into it a lot. What you brainless nerfherders don't get is that Ben Solo was innocent. The visions Luke has of Ben Solos future is the dark side tricking him like it did his father. It was the past that haunts him. If you were a Jedi, you would understand closing himself from the force is his only option.

Ohioisonfire boo hoo so people shouldnt express how they feel. That disappoints you. What disappoints me is watching every moment of drama or emotion sucked out of a film by a stupid silly monty python joke. What disappoints me is watching princess leia fly through space frozen like superman, or watching Luke throw away the first lightsabre he was handed and cry on an island for a whole film never once actually igniting a lightsabre, or watching the only credible villian killed for shock without any story behind it, an AT-AT driven by Bb8, or watching a star wars film without a lightsabre fight, or finding out it takes Rey a day and 2 lessons to be a jedi master actually finding out that Rey can pick up a lightsabre and use the force without any training at all without any explanation. Or how about watching Luke die for no reason besides watching a sunset.

I'm a hardcore Star Wars fan that hated the prequels, wasn't a fan of the Force Awakens, and after seeing it once, have mixed feelings about the Last Jedi. I thought the acting and some of the major character moments in the Last Jedi were amazing. However, I had huge problems with the overall narrative and the lack of development for many of the supporting characters. Frankly, it shows that Lucasfilm did not have a clear plan for what they wanted to do with this trilogy prior to filming the Force Awakens. The lack of "galaxy" building and character inconsistency across now both of the films in the new trilogy is readily apparent.

The Last Jedi is not a bad movie. Neither is perfect. But division of the fans is frustrating. After Reading tons of comments on internet there are just complaints , but nobody can figure out a new SW movie. More Skywalkers or Kenobis: NO. More CGI : NO! More of the same (TFA): NO! Reboot: NO! Spin off: NO. Videogames or novel’s adaptations(ripp offs!): NO! More SW movies: YESI! So, What The FUCK! PS. Is just the 2nd act. Yes, there is a lot of questions.

SPOILERS: For me personally the pay offs of The Last Jedi didn't serve me I'm not old enough to have waited for luke for almost 40 years but what happened to him was kinda eh I love how crabby and in pain he was by the what he did to Kylo, but all he did was mediate on a rock and die, not to say that wasn't an amazing force power but I wish he did a heroic sacrfrice he brought that ship out of the water lightspeed to the battle takes out tie fighters cutting at-at legs with his green light saber giving the resistance time to escape and finally dying to kylo ren after decimating the first order all by himself. Also, Snoke had a crazy set up as being the all be bad guy and had two scenes and just died, super strong force moves and I love his death scene where he is way too powerful for Rey or Kylo I mean kylo and rey had a stand off when trying to use the force for the light saber and snoke toyed with rey when she tried that against him. But in the end he just did a villian talk and got killed but for the story how strong he was I guess they had to kill him like that cause they was no other way to kill him. Thats just my opinion on those two characters plus that Finn and Rosa story was being shoved my throat the entire movie and I did not like it. Rey and Kylo story were amazing imo and Rey parents being a nobody and was a pay off for me.

The point that Jon and Mark made on "setup & payoff" is one I have held for years now. People go into movies with too concrete of an idea on what "needs" or "should" happen in order for a movie to be good to them. Why not just going to see a movie with no demands or requirements and just observe the story being told through fresh, unfiltered eyes. Just because something didn't happen the way that you wanted, doesn't make it a bad movie. But that's just my opinion unfortunately.

nkyryry (SPOILERS BELOW) I disagree. It could have been done a lot better, but the whole process of going to that planet, getting the code breaker, escaping, rushing back, sneaking onto Snoke's ship, dodging security and breaking into that room with the tracker, served to build up the hope and expectation that their plan will succeed. Then, when they fail, we completely share Poe's sense of helplessness as his mutiny (and ego) come crashing down. He looks broken and defeated, and is a huge lesson for him and his character progression. The fact that we seen that plan fail, takes us by surprise and adds to the feeling that we have no idea how they are going to escape. You really feel like the resistance is in a desperate situation for the first time in the saga. Just my opinion, but I've personally never felt as close to sharing in the rebel's plight, as in this movie.

It was because the entire sub plot ended up being pointless. There is a big theme of “failure” in this movie and it is every where. Everyone fails: Finn, Poe, Rey, Kylo, Luke, Rose.... literally none of them are successful in their endeavors until maybe the last 10 minutes. That theme just isn’t Star Wars. It’s very different than the main themes in the previous 7 films. Nothing wrong with that on its face, but it took me out of it and it didn’t feel like a Star Wars film to me. Plus, the Rey parentage and Snoke were major let downs.

My major complaints about The Last Jedi. 1. Snoke and Captain Phasma are thrown away like garbage. We learn nothing about these characters. 2. The only reason Poe sends Finn and Rose on that stupid and pointless side quest is because Holdo wouldn't tell Poe her plan.Why wouldn't she just tell him? Doesn't make any sense. 3. Speaking of Finn, his fight scene with Phasma was weak. Very anticlimactic. 4. Leia uses the Force in a major way at the beginning of the film, yet she does nothing with The Force at the end of the film. Why set up her Force powers in a huge way if your not going to do anything with those powers in the final act? Also, why is there no scene of Leia and Kylo confronting each other on Crait? It seems very weird Leia and Kylo do not have a conversation in this movie. 5. Rey is put on the back burner in the final act of the movie for no reason. Leia could have lifted those rocks. Chewie could have picked up and rescued everyone by himself in the Falcon. Rey has no arc in this film, yet she is the main protagonist of this trilogy. 6. Luke Skywalker is a coward in this movie, which is 100% not in line with his character from the original trilogy. He faced Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine without hesitation in Return of The Jedi. Also, I don't believe for a second Luke would think to kill Ben Solo. He saved his father, Darth Vader, the second most evil person in the galaxy. Ben Solo is family. Which brings me to Leia. You're telling me Luke is not going to go help and rescue Leia in person? Especially, since he knows Kylo killed Han. I don't see how someone can look past these glaring mistakes. The more I think about this movie the more angry I get because The Force Awakens set up this trilogy really well. So much potential squandered for no real reason. This movie could have been truly special with some tweaks here and there, yet Rian Johnson decided to change or throw characters away for the sake of being "different".

Other than the Finn/Rose subplot, I loved the film. I think it's genius the way Rian Johnson says "fuck you and your theories" and completely subverts expectations, even if I disagree with some choices (how Luke reacts when Rey gives him the saber). I think the past couple of years have shown how toxic online fandom can be. People (myself included) hold Star Wars to such a high standard when Empire is the only one considered a masterpiece by the majority, while that same majority think an entire trilogy (prequels) are trash. If you truly think this is a bad film then that's fine, but I personally don't understand that. If you think Rian Johnson ruined Star Wars, then i feel sorry for you. Every movie is flawed.

Cecilio Ayala I can respect thise issues and definitely see where you are coming from . There are defintaly issues. I just didnt expect it to be perfect . Nithing is gonna ever beat empire right? Lol. Phasma I wish she did more but im ok with it . Canto bite I could have lived without in this particular light. I loved the city and expected more after tfhe book but it wasn't neccary other than revelling BROOM KID lol. I also don't think they made Luke a coward at all. Was Yoda a coward ? Was obi wan ? I think luke was definitely afraid ! But more weird of just causing more damage . He wasn't afraid of the fight so to speak. Holdo I actaully do believe was a character thatnif you didn't read the princess of Alderon novel you may be be like "um who's this chick" lol. Just like the couple characters from the canto bite book. I actaully enjoyed the way Rian is trying to progress the force lore personally. I dont think anything we saw in screen isn't something that hasn't been touched upon in the EU/legends . The hyper drive thing was one of those thing that when i saw the movie the first time I aas iffy about . However second time it was ok with me . It's just new tech. Just like in our world right ? I didn't get the rey darkside mirror part . But I guess i see the message of her nit wanting t9 be alone and all she saw wwas a shitload of herself lol. There are plot holes in every star wars movie so let's see how they fill them. Snoke was t he biggest issue for me ,though i assume they will answer more about him through novels and or comics or even tv ! . Again man i just think we need to be open minded and realize luke/ mark isn't a puppet like Yoda lol. He cant be around forever in t his galaxy or the real world unfortually so they have to pass the baton. That's going to be a hard pill for some to swallow understandably. However it's a huge galaxy woth lots if stories to be told. I try and enjoy all the material we get ! It was suoer hard to swallow the Thrawn reskin!!!!! I do lime seeing him cannon but sometimes I get so upset lol. And rooke wtf!?!?! But ! Itrs not all bad . We'll never get everything we want unless we are the ones making it . Until then enjoy the ride . But again I do see your points of concern . As hardcore ffans we do over analyze fhe creap out of everything . Oh and DJ cool idea but ya useless at least in this movie. Luke at first was going to KILL Vader to protect his sister. He stopped only because Palpatine had to run his wizened old mouth, and his gloating made him realize he was about to do something terrible. If the Emperor had not interfered, Vader may have been dead and Sidious would have a new apprentice. Now, Luke has the responsibility to bring back the Jedi order from scratch, and he realizes his nephew, Vader's grandchild, a very powerful Force user, is going down the same path of Anakin Skywalker, threatening to destroy everything Luke has put so much work in rebuilding. Bear also in mind that the more powerful in the Force a Jedi is, the more exposed to the temptations of the Dark Side he will be (and in the EU Luke has had many brushes with it, and even fallen to it at one time). I think that a split second of fear and doubt is understandable, and he immediately regrets it, too. Unfortunately, it happened at the worst moment possible. So no, I don't believe this to be a betrayal of the character.

Mattia Bartolini Except the lesson was learned at the end of RotJ. And even if we consider Luke trying to kill Ben why would he then, after realizing his mistake run off and let Han and Leia deal with his fuck up like a coward? Oh and why does the movie pretend Luke just wants to be alone and die on the island when he left a map so people could find him in TFA?
@gettauttraining60
@gettauttraining60 6 лет назад
Mattia Bartolini for all intents and purposes the EU doesn't exist. Yes Luke may have killed Vader if not for Palpatine mouthing off. Yes Luke tried to strike down Palpatine if not for Vader interfering. The point is the moral of the story...in the end Luke said "I'll never turn to the darkside," and was near death crying out to his father (the mass murderer) still believing he could be turned. That's major balls! And in Rians universe all we get to explain Luke's fear about Kylo is a 5 second measly line about Snoke had already gotten to him? Show me. If Luke is going to fall that way, and that far show me why. It's like TLJ craps all over RTJ and TFA like Rian wanted to tell a different story altogether. This isn't Star Wars it's some warped ass fan-fiction.

I've been a hard core Star Wars fan since 1977 and I loved The Last Jedi. People are hating on it because they thought they knew how the movie was going to play out. When the director made different story choices than what some fans felt they deserved, those fans got angry because they forgot they aren't film makers. Movie's have no obligation to validate your opinion or what direction you think a story should go. Forget about your stupid expectations and just enjoy the story the film makers present you with. I watch Jedi council every week. I hear things you guys like and the things you complain about from time to time. That’s why I really can’t understand how you guys liked The Last Jedi. There’s just huge glaring problems with this film. Totally your prerogative,which is fair, but it seems like even when you guys expressed things you didn’t like, you’re afraid of actually saying anything bad about the film. It’s weird.

I saw the original Star Wars in 1977, I was 11 at the time and saw it 14 times in one week because it just blew me away. So when Empire and Jedi came out it was a repeat of the wonderment and joy I had from the original. When Phantom Menace came out I was 34 and watched the film through a child's eye, exactly like I did with the originals and with the rest of the prequels, all were great films to escape with and are extremely enjoyable. I am now 52 and see myself as a casual fan, both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi take me back to being 11 again, there is a definite feel of the Original Trilogy to the Last Jedi but with the addition of more mature themes. Times have moved on and so do ways of telling and visualizing stories, if you gave me a choice of which of the films to watch I would gravitate towards the more recent ones Including Rogue One. I have seen The Last Jedi twice and plan on seeing again at least another 2 times over Christmas, again it just blew me away.

To me it was meh. Won't see it again. The prequels, to me, had a way more interesting storyline. The originals had some interesting characters and an ok storyline. TLJ has a messy and untrustworthy storyline and some mediocre characters, except from Adam Driver, yes Adam Driver not Kylo Ren. The comedy is a little lame to me and some of the scenes are almost cringeworthy, so out of place.

Jonno Brown sure it does. The whole assassination attempt. The scheming of the building the clone army by a Jedi that was presumed dead. Obi Wan doing some good old-fashioned detective work to track down Jango who was lightyears better then Phasma to find everything going on Kamino. Dooku offering to ask Obi Wan to help him take down the dark lord of the Sith . maybe some of the acting was not up to par. Some dialogue missed the mark but the story.. TRUMPS TLJ .

I really enjoyed The Last Jedi, but have started thinking that now I'm nearly 50 years old, I can't love any Star Wars movie in such as wide-eyed, intoxicating way that I did when I was 8 years old. I did get a lovely throwback moment when Luke is talking to R2 ... ah, that's the Luke I remember. Saying that, I'm so happy with the way it went, I left the movie the second time (first time I watched it in Japanese, so only understood the dialogue partially - so my first viewing was largely just a visceral treat) feeling delighted ... heartbroken ... but ultimately pleased with the direction the saga is pointing.

I don't understand how anyone can like or even love last jedi, casual or die hard fan. Lazy wrap ups to stories introduced by TFA and introducing stories that had no payout, and who I found myself caring little for. And it really felt like Empire, but doing a 180 with the speeders and AT ATs. I honestly felt very little for any of the new characters and even for some of the main characters. I only watched it the one time and decided I di dnt like it. A movie should only need one watch to determine whether or not you like it. I actually would rather watch justice league again before I pay to see TLJ.

Zoltan1251 the story is told badly it sets up plotlines and questions that go nowhere and have no payoff its anti-climantic. Why set up the question of whos Reys parents are if they are no one? Thats fine that shes from no one important but why set it up as a question in the force awakens and make us wait two years. Terrible story telling. And thats just one example. I dont want the story I wanted or expected I just want a good story that doesnt waste peoples time and actually flows. Im mad NOT because this wasnt the story i was expecting but because it simply wasnt a good well told story. Just because something is unexpected or original doesnt make it good.

The movie was trash. The director should be excommunicated from Hollywood and film making. The screen writers need to quit the cocaine and actually do research and connect plot/themes for a coherent film. Disney needs to step back and let the brand be what it was in the original trilogy. Star wars was always dark, mysterious, epic and mind blowing. Lets face it, they blew it. Luke was supposed to be the GOAT. Luke's original character was a Jedi powerhouse. Straight out bogus film making.

This is the type of tribalistic generalisation to dehumanise groups of people that is causing all the problems in the world. I loved TFA, I didn't like TLJ. There are countless reasons from countless people on why they disliked TLJ, however absolutely none of the reasons were because TLJ is different. It was because of extremely poor plot, mischaracterisation of Luke, whom Mark Hamill himself has stated he disliked and the disrespect for canon and lore established in TFA and the expanded universe.

I have so many things I dislike about the film, but the thing that really killed my anticipation is that, ultimately, this film was actually the least risky Star Wars film ever. Is anyone going to point out that we have taken two films of a trilogy to do a soft reboot?! It’s funny, that is one of the reasons I enjoyed the film. TLJ essentially does all the darth snoke/sidious and Ray &Kylo/ Luke & Vader type sequence to the crossroads and making their choices right now...grow other characters including force lore( though it wasn’t done pretty well I admitttedly for xters) rather than wonder who rays parents are or where snoke came from.

I dislike TLJ, because I think Luke, behaved out of character, & because it reinterprets the force in lore breaking ways. Also, are a lot of writing problems. The movie also, goes out of it's way to trash the Star Wars, I grew up with. I have many other problems, but these are the main ones. I'm not an irrational troll, & I had no fan theory check boxes. It's unfair to assume the heart/intentions, of someone who doesn't like the movie. It's really patronizing & dismissive.

You clearly just hate it because it did not conform to what you think Star Wars should be which is your right but not an objective truth. Most of your points are just outright wrong, name one single way the force lore was broken. Also what do you consider the lore? Just the movies or the books as well? Also Luke portrayed the fallen hero arctype, had been broken given up but ultimately redeems himself, you may not like this route on his characters evolution, but it was done well. I will grant you that the entire Finn arc was handled very poorly, but that is one part of a very big film in my opinion.
@TheMoonKingdom
@TheMoonKingdom 6 лет назад
Princeofall66 H, My complaints have to do with contradictions in the lore, & issues with the writing; both objective. Force sensitive people require training, not only in the concentration necessary to access various powers, but in the discipline to not be overwhelmed by the power. Light Saber use also requires training. This movie & to an extent TFA, throws that out. Rey, is powerful & skilled because the force says so. This leaves Rey, with no personal merit; nothing is earned. Force ghosts, are now physically material, & Yoda, hurls lightning!?! Concerning Luke, It's not well done. What could Luke, have experienced to change him so much that he would consider murdering his sleeping nephew? A change like that which happens off screen, is also unearned, & bad writing...show don't tell. Finn, is just a token black man disallowed personal agency; tazed repeatedly, & the butt of jokes. The trained soldier that Phasma, & Kylo, bother to notice, had enough time to be the janitor...right.
@TheMoonKingdom
@TheMoonKingdom 6 лет назад
Zoltan1251, these "expectations", you assign to me, are a straw man argument. I said I dislike the movie because of writing problems; contradictions in lore, & Luke, being turned into a different character without explanation. This has nothing to do with expectations. Star Wars, already existed as a fictional universe with established rules. This new trilogy is breaking those rules, therefore the story is now meaningless. A building can't stand if you break it's foundation.

Was it great? Was it really? I left the movies thinking the same, but the more I thought about it, the more i saw how inconsistent and flawed the movie really is. There are great films, and it was super entertaining. But the main problem really is that it's marketed towards kids, and presents and solves problems in a simple way for kids. This is clearly shown in the mutiny scene. Do you really think it's realistic for a person to organise a mutiny against their superiors and for that same person to have no consequences?
@Ledpooplin55
@Ledpooplin55 6 лет назад
Bea the best "Star Wars is for 12 year olds" - George Lucas. I think you're over thinking it. Is it realistic for a farm boy to take part in an assault on the deathstar? Seal Team 6 didn't ask random orphans with no military training to kill bin Laden, but you bought it bc you were 6 when you saw it. People want star wars to get old with them. It shouldn't. I don't like the cutesie bs but Star Wars isn't just for me. We old Star Wars fans need to come to terms with that I think.
