I've primarily worked out at smaller boxes. I like the tightness of the community. I'm always shocked when I drop in and am part of a 50+ person class. Awesome how well some box owners do.
Jason Khalipa would you be interested in conducting one of these seminars in Europe. I would love to host you ay Reebok CrossFit Nürnberg. I have attended many "Business" Seminars and your on-line videos have been the best and most applicable I have seen.
Awesome! Brought up a few things I wasn't thinking about that I'll take home to my business modal. Thanks for the pointers and the motivation you share in every video Jason.
Not sure how you would plan on teaching people with just a 1:20 coach to athlete ratio. Depending on the programming of the day, we find that a 1:8 to 1:12 ratio works well for classes where we're teaching some of the more technical movements, and with classes that just have big wods we can get away with a 1:15 or 1:18 ratio... but we have such a mix of classes that we keep the ratio at 1:12. Anything more than 12 and we put a second coach on. Before we did that, we had complaints that sometimes people didn't get any feedback on their lifts in the whole round 1 (~20 min). Would love to hear your thoughts on that? Also, we have a 5,000 sq. foot room where we lose about 1500 to turf and a social area and offices, with about 3,500 left, the most we can fit is about 25 people.. and this is absolutely maxed. We have lots of equipment which takes up space though, so perhaps that's where you're thinking you can fit 40. Thanks.
Thanks again for making this great video man, I do have a question though.. Can you please tell me what is the first thing I should do to open a box? i.e renting a place and buy equipments and get everything ready to start and then apply for affiliation? Or first get the affiliation application approved then start preparing everything like renting place buy equipment etc? Please advise
Ever consider opening up boxes in the San Mateo or Milbrae area? And what is your opinion on companies like classpass, groupon, and fitmob? I would love to use them as a means to try out fun new gyms on the cheap but I read articles and quotes from boutique gym owners that it ended up doing more harm than good... Those gyms are usually family owned and I wouldn't want to take advantage of them
Romeo Casido I own a kettlebell studio KettleFlex Fitness (very similar model as crossfit but very scaled back) i am signed up to tkae classpass (who just bought fitmob) and FitN (a san diego based business) as a gym owner my opinion is that is only helps. It helps fill classes that arent as busy and is a little extra cash at the end of the month. If a gym/box doesnt manage it and allows people to come during busy times, then that is their fault. On the business side we can decide which classes to make available. From a coaches side it is always more fun to coach a full class than 1-2 people (in my opinion) I wouldnt try and run my business relying on the classpass model but it definitely is a nice little add on
Lol. Finding this in 2021. Decent model. These are based on Fixed Costs. In his budgeted income forecast, he forecasts a $45,000 deficit. This is because he kept all fixed costs, but specifically coaching a constant. You wouldnt need 14,400 of payroll in coaching until you had the members that demanded them. So this could be mitigated to a degree. But... outpacing your member growth is necessary.
Opening up a gym in Indianapolis, and I'm on the same boat as you when you started up. Spent about the same amount for things maybe just a little more. Now, would you start off charging like you would normally if the gym were fully outfitted and up and running like a gym who has been there for over a year or two? In compassion to the other gyms in the area, I'm no where near at the success they've had obviously, but what's getting to me is should I charge as if I had been a fully outfitted gym. If anyone else has any comments please share!
Charge not based only on your equipment and location. Charge based on the value you bring as a coach, community builder, and motivator. Find out what that's worth and stick to it. Enjoy the process! Doesn't matter if your brand new or have been around for years. The cream always rises to the top, be the best gym and others will notice.
