Which way you mount the indicator does matter while dialing in the steady rest.
First Video: • Aligning the Steady Re...
I misspoke in the video I made about dialing in the steady rest, so I made a second video.

While the rest of us are patting ourselves on the back for getting things inside of a thou, Robin looses sleep over being out by a millionth. Sharing and explaining his advice was good of you, and your video did an excellent job of illustrating the concept and why it matters. Thanks, and good luck with your channel. Subscribed.

After watching Robin, I feel like a thousandth might as well be an inch! Thanks for subbing! :)

Good thing Robin has an eye on us, he's pretty good in precision machining... I also got the difference as you were explaining it... Cheers, Pierre

Measure with the indicator on the tailstock center, from the shaft. Easy to see faster and accurate, unless the shaft is bent? Also take a shorter piece of shaft, same diameter close to the chuck. Indicate the shaft true, slide the steady rest in place. Adjust the steady rest, now is set for your diameter centered. Place your shaft you wish to machine in place indicate and have at it. Good luck!

I'll think about this for a while. Thanks for the demo.

Wow! Excellent demonstration, very convincing, well done video. I like that you followed up on your early measurements with an "improved" version so all of us could benefit. I'm impressed; hats off.

Thanks Jim! Glad you "checked in" too. I was wondering about you a couple days ago as I hadn't heard from you in a while.

Thank you for the excellent tutorials. It takes a strong person to consider the counsel of others, and admit when they were mistaken without getting offended and flaming others with keyboard muscles. I'd have been trying to measure from the bed, but as mentioned; that wouldn't work on an irregular work piece surface.

this was excellent.. thank you... as a total noob i would think that the OK way would be to mount your indicator on the bed or the cross slide and rotate the chuck and adjust the fixed steady rest until you get a zero all around but now i understand that problem with that will be the fact that there would be no reference point to zero to, which in this case is the chuck.. or i could still be wrong but i will follow your method

Do you have a steady rest for your little atlas?

Wide Vision Metal Fab I sure do. And a follower rest too. I haven't used the follower rest yet but I've used the steady rest.....

i have never seen anyone indicate in this manner. looks to me like making a mountain out of a mole hill.

See I would think you would want base on bed and measure deflection of the part as it turns.

Mind boggling, isn't it?

In your first video you didn't measure to the face of the chuck - you measured to the outside. So it's the same thing. Mounted on the chuck or mounted on the shaft, you're measuring radial (!) distance in both cases.

That's what I thought, but I just proved other wise in this video.
