Raising the mast is the final step traversing the Erie Canal. At Hop-O-Nose Marina in Catskill, New York, the excellent crane crew uses a device rumored to have helped excavate the Canal . . . in 1825! I had my mast trucked - instead of carried on the deck - to get it there ($1,800 to transport, about $400 to drop in Oswego and $500 to step in Catskill, NY) The now-mechanized crane is swift and sure and helps us on our way to the Atlantic and Caribbean. The Hudson River is mighty . . . swollen with rain water following storms -- with hazardous logs all along our route. New York City goes from sleepy to choppy in a few miles through Manhattan and Lady Liberty ushers us out to the Atlantic.

You’ve sailed off of the chart! 😄 Look forward to following your travels if you ever make it back to the sweet water!

Oh! The sweet water is definitely a consideration for the future. While the water may be chilly, the Great Lakes has wonderful towns, ports, anchorages and islands for destination sailing. I was struck by the difference in New Jersey - where there isn't a lot of opportunities for destination sailing . . . But there is fishing . . 99.9% center console hard tops with three outboards - or your charter/Hatteras-type - no sailboats or family cruisers. Yep, Great Lakes appeal remains. Thank you so much for joining the journey.

Having you watch us what really rocks. I would have liked to give more crane detail - what a rig - but my software tech is a new version with a few glitches that made me pressed for time. More fun stuff ahead. Thanks again

Dennis - you really need to get out and explore NY sometime! It is loud, busy, crowded and dirty....but also a lot of fun, great food, theater and people. Looking forward to seeing you navigate an ocean! Also, did I spy a co-captain as you made your way through Manhattan?

No co-captain yet, Tracie - a friend/neighbor has a hankering for ocean sailing during some scheduled vacation, so I may FINALLY get a gal on board for a bit . . . Which can only help my dismal viewership numbers LIKE, SHARE, SUBSCRIBE!! Which brings me to another CREW mug giveaway contest I will run again in the next few weeks. Stir Crazy trivia coming your way. Thanks again, Tracie!

Congratulations on arriving to the Atlantic. Thank you for including the prices. Looking forward to the next episode, the marsh is spectacular. I like your Catalina. How many hours on its engine?

About 3200 hours on the Yanmar now - it is an excellent power plant. If i motor at 2200 RPM at abot 5.5 knots in fresh water, 6.5 in salt water, for 8 hours, I'll use 3 gallons of diesel at the most. Thanks again for watching!

One more thing, John - single handing adds an extra day of expenses at the marinas - so add that to your budget, if you take on this journey
