Raising the mast is the final step traversing the Erie Canal. At Hop-O-Nose Marina in Catskill, New York, the excellent crane crew uses a device rumored to have helped excavate the Canal . . . in 1825! I had my mast trucked - instead of carried on the deck - to get it there ($1,800 to transport, about $400 to drop in Oswego and $500 to step in Catskill, NY) The now-mechanized crane is swift and sure and helps us on our way to the Atlantic and Caribbean. The Hudson River is mighty . . . swollen with rain water following storms -- with hazardous logs all along our route. New York City goes from sleepy to choppy in a few miles through Manhattan and Lady Liberty ushers us out to the Atlantic.
