If you're going to use bait and switch numbers, you should put the time it takes to fire off the other two weapons in the DPS calculation. This has a massive noticable impact on DMG phases, especially if they're shorter ones like Caretaker.

PSA: I made a mistake re: the TAIPAN 4FR! Which of course I only noticed AFTER posting the video. Explanation: My taipan 4FR is actually crafted, and I apparently crafted it (days ago) with a CHARGE TIME masterwork - which, Bungie does not show you in-game when inspecting your weapon. The Taipan DEFAULT charge-time is 533, just like the Reed's Regret & the Cataclysmic! So their default DPS values should be closer together. HOWEVER, if you were ever wondering how a Precision Frame Linear Fusion Rifle does, DPS wise with ACCELERATED COILS, now we know! Because the Taipan-4FR in this video is essentially operating with Accelerated Coils literally the entire time. So now you have those damage #'s if you wanted to compare regular rate of fire to slightly faster rate of fire! All other points stand as-is, sorry for that mistake y'all. Was working very fast & didn't notice when writing the script! ❤

@@yackemup something i don't think many people are even talking about is that since bungie reduced the penalties associated with the charge time reducing impact damage thing, it's nor borderline a mandatory masterwork for LFR's for max dps output.

Don’t mean to be pernickety but I’m sure your calves are wrong. You do need to find every guns max damage with every buff because the universal buffs (e.g. radiant) doesn’t apply to every weapons total damage. E.g. if you use storm chaser with firing line and radiant the radiant apples to the base damage but not the firing line damage which is 83.333% of the damage but with the cataclysmic having a 35% weapon buff, the base damage (which can be buffed with radiant) is a smaller percentage of total damage (74.1%) This means that the universal buffs aren’t going to buff every weapons damage the same so you can’t just not calculate them. After one mele you can get high energy fire, font of might and radiant which is a 70% damage buff. If you add bait and switch this increases cataclysmic’s buff to 105 and it’s damage to 119 625.8. Having firing line, storm chaser only has a damage buff of 90% but it’s base damage is higher. It gets a damage per burst of 157 912.8. Storm chaser therefor, with all the buffs gets a dps of 113,606.331. Cataclysmic gets a dps of 119,506.294. All of this is before reloading but you can see that while cataclysmic has a 5.505% increase in damage in your calculations, in mine it is only is only 5.193% better. It’s a small difference, but it’s noticeable.

Also Fourth Time’s The Charm ammo regen is good for certain situations. Thats why speedrunners used Cataclysmic for 1phase Caitl(Duality boss). I used Stormchaser on a fun solo flawless run and on the 3rd bell I had no heavy so thats how I understood why its better.

You not only give me *useful* information, but you teach me how to evaluate weapons in general. This helps me in my own preparations so I don't drag down my fire team. Storm Chaser's intrinsic perk allows you to get more reload speed if you get hit. Which happens all the time. Clown Cartridge will be better because you already have reload perk on the gun.

Can confirm, this is the roll I have and it's amazing. Rapid hit on Storm gives it near perfect stability and a fast reload considering each shot procs rapid hit three times.

I love my Stormchaser but the ease of Taipan and just being able to craft the god roll and not worry about anything is amazing. Everyone now has access to to a high tier damage dealing weapon without the hassle of grinding out something in hopes of a drop or hopes of getting a deepsighted version to eventually craft it. Taipan is an easy choice and makes running other exotics even better for the raid/dungeon.

SAME. Reaping Wellmaker makes FoM super easy to proc. Especially is you start stacking them with Elemental Time Dilation. Or you could just go with the Gyrfalcon buff and do more damage than a Well.

i run clown frenzy on storm for first drop and its a monster. id say its better than firing line. can use it solo, and faster reload stacking with bitterspite makes it instant.

something that wasn't brought up that I think is absolutely important when it comes to comparing these LFR's: Total damage output. In situations like warpriest day 1 or oryx, not only does your DPS matter but also the total amount of damage that you can do over your reserves. In those types of situations, ammo is sparse and using as little ammo as possible to do as much damage as possible is very important, which imo gives the edge to the non-stormchaser LFR's. They can do approximately the same dps but only use 1/2 their reserves while stormchaser may use 2/3.

@@something3610The video talks about DPS not total damage. You're quite literally incorrect. Let's do some math real fast. Cataclysmic: The gun has 20 shots, and with 6 in the mag you can fire off 10 shots without reloading while only consuming 6 ammo. This means that with 20 shots to begin with, you get 3 full mags plus 1 mag of 2 shots. 3 mags * 10 shots per mag with perfect crits + 2 shots = 32 total shots With those shots, the first shot of each mag is not going to be buffed by bait and switch, but the rest will, meaning that of our full mags we get 9 shots with B+S and 1 shot without, then our last mag we get 1 shot without and 1 shot with for a total of 28 shots with B+S and 4 shots without B+S. (28 shots * 78,780 damage) + (4 shots * 58,356 damage) = 2,439,264 damage total across your reserves Stormchaser: The gun has 19 shots at base with no reserve mods, and no triple tap or fourth times to worry about. The gun with firing line hits for 33, 599 three times per shot for a total of 100,797 per shot, 19 shots * 100,797 per shot = 1,915,143 total damage.

Stormchaser, while maybe lacking in DPS, makes up for it by having much better total damage vs the options mentioned. Having 15% more total damage is crazy helpful for a lot of situations and objectively the best option here :)

Taipan is one of the best things Bungie has added. Tons of people on LFG are Gatekeepers, maybe I was also one at some point. However, now that Taipan's Godroll exists and is easy to get, Gatekeeping will absolutely decrease. It will still exist, but hopefully not as prevalent.

The biggest thing with the LFR meta is that the Weapons team made a decision about a year ago that these weapons needed to matter. Then they went to work making them the best aspirational pursuits across multiple game modes. That's a huge commitment of time and planning that we do not normally talk about with game development.

Cataclysmic might seem like “overkill” in some circumstances, but I’ve one-phased Nightmare Caiatl and compensated for New Lights in all raids often enough to milk that overkill for all it’s worth. Only in a perfect team is Cataclysmic too much, else you’ll want all the damage you can get.

@Lil Mikey pretty sure @Joshua Smith was referring to situations like I had yesterday where I was in a teaching Kingsfall with 4 learners and a couple players who were just a couple weeks into the game. Believe me that on Warpriest my co-sherpa and I needed all the advantage of fully optimized loadouts in order to help get past that damage check especially with players who were unfamiliar with where to find the knights / brand stealing etcetera. If you're in a stacked team then you are correct, it 100% does not matter, but not everyone plays fully optimized and stacked for pve in D2.

Small Note on the Taipan, with the right perks and backupmag you can get a mag size of 7, so with triple tap you can fire 10 shots without veist stinger

@@Iliketacos091 the issue is that ionized battery reduces taipan's reserves by 3 (or enhanced battery increases them by 3) so you'll still be doing less dmg overall with ionized. It's more of a trade-off for total dps vs burst dps with the hope of additional veist procs. I have two identical rolls but one has ionized and backup mag and the other has enhanced battery. The one with enhanced battery has a total of 22 rounds and the one with ionized battery has 19 WITHOUT any reserve perks. I don't know if it's because of ionized battery is bugged and reduces reserves, whether it's backup mag interacting with ionized that reduces it, or backup mag itself, but enhanced battery has a total of 22 reserves

You get *two* quests from the enclave, the one that gets you the Taipan pattern and other quest that gives you conveniently two orange golf balls. You can not only craft the taipan with extreme ease, you can get it fully enhanced right away.

Also Enhanced triple tap is not bad when there's no div, like in the corrupted, where div is detrimental, but the extra range from enhanced FL is a total waste, I really just wanted the gold borders. lol

I love the taipan. It’s now my go to linear. I’m a void lock main so it’s nice to combined it with violatile rounds. I’m happy bungie made it very easy to get so people could craft an endgame high DPS god roll for the raid

General rule of thumb is if you use charge time your numbers will be smaller, but in long damage phases over a few magazines a charge time masterwork will greatly increase DPS.

I am halfway through scripting a video about this, and also differnet mags etc. basically from what i've tested, charge time on linears tends to follow the same sort of trend as every other weapon in destiny, which is that the faster it shoots, the higher DPS, but lower Total Damage. same applies for snipers for example, where a 140 does higher dps, but less total damage, but a 72 is the complete opposite. so a charge time masterwork increases dps, but lowers total damage, meaining that it is good for things like raids, but you probably don't want it for a gm. and same goes with accelerated and liquid coils, although u pretty much always want a bigger mag so it doesn't matter.

@@evstar14 liquid coils even that it doesnt shows that, adds 40ms charge time and only gives you 2% more damage per shot compared to 533ms. simple boss mod gives 7.77% more, lets look at 6 vs 7 mag, 6x2% its 12% more like 612% total in longer 573ms 6 shots, where 7 shots its like 700% damage in regular 533ms time. liquid is good against champions where every shot with rare ammo drops counts, but not in long dps phase to boss

As you said, bait needs 2 previous shots with other weapons, so, all that switch and fire (also directly related to FR and Ready time from the guns) lessens your dps in contrast to only switch to taipan and shot. You forgot to take into account that void weapons can have volatile rounds and the new arcus lfr can have voltshot (hardest to activate in dps phase imo), which increase your dps as well

I have every LFR listed with enhanced perks if applicable and yes, I use Taipan over Cataclysmic cause I'm lazy too. Factor in the potential RNG of you basically unloading all of your ammo without reloading once makes the upside of using Taipan outweigh the 6k difference between Cataclysmic IMHO.

On an average oryx phase I use 13 rounds out of my my cataclysmic and that’s not factoring in all the extra ammo. I lose so much time in the reload I’m wasting ammo that can’t proc the refund.

Yeah it can get wild high dps runs with izanagi, and cataclysmic but for ease of use, literally just plug and play, the 4fr is so good. No grinding, does amazing damage and with a 6stack it wont matter about that 6k damage difference. I actually had an oryx damage phase where I did not reload once due to triple tap and veist stinger. Felt so good haha.

@@amidamaru4414 I personally agree and also disagree. For example, that's like saying firing line isn't as good as vorpal because you choose to play solo. Firing line will still have a place though for those who play with groups. It has a place, for those who strive for the utmost damage, but the ease of use from the new 4fr outweighs that. The time to grind for the god roll, the time learning the skill to swap guns, and have builds to make sure you don't run out of ammo is doable or you can craft the 4fr and get number that are only slightly worse. I know what I choose lol.

Favorite is my crafted cataclysmic because I love the aesthetic of vow weapons and bait n switch pairs so nicely with witherhoard which is my favorite exotic in the entire game. Stick with witherhoard, shoot a quick primary shot, and you pump out some mean numbers.

also it gives you a huge pump in dps because reloading means less firing which means a lot less dps. So in reality reeds and taipan are much better. only cata can be better if you take in consideration that you deal damage with it and witherhoard at the same time (which can only do one player) or use izanagi or double slug.

Another thing to consider: both Reed's Regret and Cataclysmic can have Adept versions, so Adept Charge Time is an option on those (and Adept Charge Time doesn't lower Impact damage).

@@TheOnlyBexon Like he said, the point of Adept Big Ones is that it mashes together Major Spec + Boss Spec into a single mod. This is a nice bonus to have because Champions are considered Majors, not Bosses. The mod lets you use your heavy for both roles, since both are important in harder content, without sacrificing anything. Without it, you'd have to pick between doing more Champion damage or doing more Boss damage, but not both.

I think you forget about 1 thing regarding three tap and veist stinger: three tap + autoload while shooting make ammo regen from thin air much more often. thus Taipan 4 IS the overall damage king with a little bit short in dps.

If you're a behemoth titan you can supply Font of Might thoughout a damage phase just by breaking a stasis crystal. Elemental shards will make it so those stasis shards act as a stasis well. Indeed other teammates must be on stasis to benefit, which for none of the classes have a good one-and-done. (Silence and squall is ok I guess) But that does resolve the need for elemental time dilation + 4 Fonts of Might. TL;DR Behemoth make stasis crystals easy. Stasis crystal + glacial harvest = elemental well via "Elemental Shards" So they only need to put on elemental shards, font of might, and the suck fragment on. The behemoth does have to stop briefly to destroy another crystal for the team, but that's a very quick task

Good vid but one problem I see lots of people make when doing these tests, you need to account for the time it takes to cycle through weapons with bait and switch to get the true dps of cataclysmic. It will be lower/higher then what you have here because of weapon swapping, then results will differ once again with weapon selection. For example using arbalist will tank your dps vs using something faster like witherhoard but just for a decent comparison if you just add in the time of swapping/shooting two primaries it will give you a better idea of the dps. Then if you really wanted to get into it you could math out the popular combos people use with it for the real dps. Imo Its much easier to just go shoot the first boss in last wish till you die for a easy comparison of these weapons or a Oryx damage phase cause thats easy shots to hit and a decent duration. Once again good vid and not hating on you at all, I'm just a big numbers guy and always see people gloss over the setup time for bait and switch.

**adjusts nonexistent glasses** Actually, several boss fights have lingering ads that you can shoot with your other weapons before the DPS phase starts, so it doesn't necessarily need to be factored in. Even then, when you factor in Witherhoard or Izanagi, Cataclysmic wins by a landslide. But then you may need to run something else, like a weapon for champions in a Master raid, and maybe there aren't any ads before DPS, etc. Bottom line is, if you wanted to get really technical, you'd basically have to make separate DPS calcs for Cataclysmic for every single encounter of every single raid, and that's just not reasonable. And someone will inevitably disagree anyway, as is required of the internet. So I can see why Fallout just made it easier for everyone and gave the base DPS of Cataclysmic on its own.

I carried my friends (whom never raid nor do end game pve content) through Kingsfall, I've instructed them to get the crafted Taipan-4FR from the Enclave. Not everyone did as instructed but they did receive a decent Taipan for the raid from a world drop. They were skeptical about the dps of Linears, only wanted to go Gjallarhorn, heir apparent, etc. Upon seeing the numbers they were dishing out from linears, they were quickly changing their tune regarding them, took us like 9 hours but we managed to complete the raid. :D

Going to work on leveling my Taipan but my godroll Stormchaser is probably going to remain a favorite for damage output + ease of use as well as the "Thunk-Thunk-Thunk" of its firing pattern giving me sweet serotonin. Reed's is probably the only one I'm not going to reach for due to trials, and if I end up with one of each light element then I am ready for any solo lost sectors or nightfalls with my friends where I need it.

TL;DW: these are all top tier dps heavies and running any of them is going to be very good. I kid (sort of). I really love this type of content so thanks for putting together. I will say for the dps comparison, reload time after "first mag" is going to cut into cataclysmic and stormchaser, putting all four of these pretty close (veist is, as you mentioned, wild). With most dps phases lasting more than 10 seconds, taipan and reed's can easily catch up due to not needing to reload as often (or at all). Oryx, for example, has a dps phase that seemingly lasts for eternity and two reloads without veist is going to make a big difference in dps. Though to my first point, probably not enough to matter.

I think the linear fusion meta has been pretty neat so far. There aren't any specific contenders that just blow the competition out of the water; any LF with a decent damage perk and mag-extension perk can easily perform very well in end-game PVE, which is super cool. Not only that, but each respective option can be combined with a FOM build and elemental burns to further improve their effectiveness.
