Dave Moss gives some quick insight into what sag numbers you should run for both the street and the track. Sag is the foundation of proper suspension setup. It is critical to both the safety and performance of any motorcycle with adjustable suspension. Get the most out of your bike by making this simple adjustment regularly on your bike.

Wooh, Dave you're still going, I used to watch your videos a decade ago on the OTT channel. Best advice I ever got for my bike.

This stuff is priceless, and exactly the reason why I bought a slacker and now take the time to get my suspension working how I want/need it to.

Hey Dave. I’ve been enjoying your various tutorials over the past few days. Really appreciate you sharing your extensive knowledge!! I ride a Ducati 848 ex track bike now returned to the road. It has stock Showa front end with a Racetech valve kit (installed by previous owner) and Nichols 30mm triples. Not sure if springs were changed. Ive got an Ohlins DU811 on the rear, 80Nmm spring. I’ve measured 36mm of sag at the front and 25mm rear. Front Comp is set to 2/3 soft and rebound is set 9 clicks out. Preload has 6 lines showing. The rear is tighter than a fishes butt crack!!! Preload is all the way out, comp 12 clicks and rebound 9 clicks out. So I’m picking I need a softer spring (75 or 70Nmm)? Thoughts?

I’m completely new to riding sport bikes and definitely new to suspension stuff. I’ve watched all your videos on handle bar ergonomics and seem that have that down but I’m completely lost on the suspension side of getting my bike to fit me better. Currently have a 2011 Yamaha R6 and only ride on the street right now. What settings should I use for a smoother ride over the little bumps that I encounter? Or is stock settings better?
@SlackerUSA
@SlackerUSA 4 года назад
For general street I would start with a flat bike i.e. 30mm sag on each end. Start with the clickers in the stock position and see how it feels. If it is still stiff try backing off the compression damping a bit;-) If you want direct advice from Dave, please hit him up on his channel;-)

Hi Dave, I've got the sag set so the bike is flat for road use. However, if you've been back to Blighty lately you'll know that the roads are in an appalling state with lots of unavoidable bumps, potholes and ridges. I'm finding the GSX S1000 is so rigid over the bumps that sometimes it's frightening with the handlebars attempting to jump out of my hands and my bum parting company with the seat waaay too often. I'm assuming reducing preload won't do much and that the best way to improve the handling over bumps would be to reduce compression damping. A) Is this correct and B) if you reduce compression, should you leave rebound alone? And for all those that want to offer advice, yes I know the stock suspension is the subject of lots of complaints and that the best solution is to change the stock shocks. However, my question goes for any shock setup (unless it has fast and slow compression settings).

Hello Dave. I own a 2014 Honda cb1100 air and oil cool. Do you have a video about suspension tuning on old school bike, I looked for, but I didn't find any. Thank you...EZ.

Hi, how can i measure front sag with a traditional fork? Can i measure from the bottom of the steering stem? Di i reach the same value of an upside down fork?
@SlackerUSA
@SlackerUSA 4 года назад
Good question, we include a smaller velcro strap for the fork adapter to accommodate the smaller upper tube but otherwise there is no difference from what Dave shows you here;-)

Hi Dave Is the sag your talking about the total drop from no weight on the wheel or sag from the bike sitting one the floor and then the added rider weight?
@SlackerUSA
@SlackerUSA 5 лет назад
This is Johny- Correct, rider sag is how much the suspension sags under the riders weight from fully unloaded. Static sag is with the bike only under it's own weight;-)

Hi, how can I make an yamaha mt 10 stay on the ground. I dont like wheelies, when i accelerat the wheel lifts and i have to slow down. Best regards
@SlackerUSA
@SlackerUSA 4 года назад
Hard to say not knowing your setup, style etc but the best place to start is to make sure you have the sag on point so the bike is balanced. Then set all the clickers in the factory default positions and see how it feels. You could affect the wheelie tendency by either adding low speed compression damping to the shock to stiffen it up or possibly you need to add some rebound damping in the front so it doesn't want to rise up on you exiting turns etc.

Great stuff dave, ok lads, i havent rode for a while, just getting back into it,wont be doing track days, but lots of winding roads,pot holes ect,in my area,tasmania,australia, my missus helped me do very first sag, went 34.5 front 29.5 back, 08 zx 10,bout 94 kilo with helmet, has anyone tried the 30/30 or 35/35 set up? Id like to get it to corner like me old vfr 750s🤣 if thats possible, cheers
@SlackerUSA
@SlackerUSA 4 года назад
You might try running closer to 25/30. Running the bike flat will reduce it's cornering ability and would tend to be a more generic street setup;-) -Johny

Shouldn't you look at suspension travel and then take 1/3 of it's travel as a base line, meaning sports bike may be 30mm target, but big tourer 40mm and etc depending on the suspension travel abilities
@SlackerUSA
@SlackerUSA 4 года назад
Sure but he is talking about sport bikes and super bikes here.
@RidingWithGerdas
@RidingWithGerdas 4 года назад
@@SlackerUSA Was not mentioned was it. My Fazer is street bike, but suspension travel of 140mm, so 1/3 of it's travel is well over 25-30mm target.
@SlackerUSA
@SlackerUSA 4 года назад
Thatn is just a general rule, every bike is a little different and you should always refer to the manufacturers recommendations. If you need rough settings for a specific bike we have an app that lets you add your bikes and it will show you the general settings.
@RidingWithGerdas

@@SlackerUSA I just think Dave should have mentioned that it depends on suspension travel and then it's range rather then giving straight numbers
