In this episode I make a really simple white noise generator. There is not much more to say about this module. There is one output and that is it. So let the "Noise drinking game" begin, choose your beverage or food wisely as you need to swallow it quite quickly :D
Day 6: Noise (Noise, S&H, Random gates)
Part 1: White Noise Generator
Difficulty: Easy
Price: less than 2$

The digital crackling in the noise when I show the sweeping noise is coming from the RU-vid compression algorithm most probably, as it is "clean" noise when listening, without any digital glitching... :)

Hello! I have just tested one on a breadboard and tomorrow I will make a dual one, maybe adding a simple passive filter to give some colour before it gets into the filter. Not sure whether it would lower the volume too much though. Thanks for all your work

Hi Kristian, I just build this noise module and it works great. Many thanks for this video. Have a nice day

Hey! That is awesome! Hope you get a huge modular one day. :)

thanks for this, couldn't see it at first because of the low amplitude, had to zoom in. deleted previous comment before noticing. runs lovely for my purposes at lower voltage.

I tried the 2N3904 at first but it didn't produced any noise. But the 2N2907 did it! Very noisy and the noise level is also fine.

Thanks! Waiting for what filter you will choose. I've built MS-20 filter and its amazing, agressive and wide-ranged. Pretty simple btw
5 лет назад
The ms20 filter is of course a given. ;) I went for simplicity in building all modules so most filters are “simple” :)

Someone I met or someone like me built up White noise generator and jammed all the CB radios back in the day had the idiots looking for me so I used the directional microphone or sorry someone I meant is the directional microphone to reflect the radio waves off of the mountains they never caught him

I had only one NPN transistor (2N2907), so I use a 6.8V zener diode instead of the first one : it's work nice too...
3 года назад
Yes that works nice too. In the colored noise module a zener diode is used.

Great serie, I'm enjoying it. Your views are low now but I think time will be on your side. Anyway, I've got a tip/question; Bastl has put many of their designs on github, can you film one of those?
5 лет назад
Thanks! Let’s hope so ;) I’ll take a look at the bastl schematics, sounds interesting. It’ll be in the future though as too many videos has stacked up right now. :)

I'm sorry @kristian, i've just a doubt, where do you connect the ground on your stripboard? Happy new year!

Hi Kristian.... I haven't seen any of the synth DIY sites offer any kind of random sequence generator. Do you have a circuit for that, or any good ideas on how to do that? I understand they can be made with the use of a noise generator.

Love your videos Kristian. Quick noob question: How do you go about connecting this in a Eurorack world where it is bipolar power supply? Also, does this not need an Opamp to get to needed volume? Tuuusen tack för din tid och att du delar din kunskap. Allt gott! //Ted

Sorry for late reply. All cmos circuits you attach to +voltage and ground. It’s that simple. Just ignore the -voltage on any module where you don’t need it. Tack för att du tittar! Hoppas du får ihop en rejäl modular! 🙌

Hey bro! I enjoyed this. And have found the schematic for myself that you displayed thank U so much. Before I go through, can it function on a 9v supply? Cheers bro sorry for noob question
Год назад
Sorry for late reply, yes it _should_ work on 9v aswell... :)

The design looks similar (though not strictly identical, I am not sure about how the differences apply) to the noise source used in Kinks by Mutable
5 лет назад
After also seeing this circuit in many other modules I guess the “one leg cut of transistor noise” is quite common. I think this one is a bit to wide in its spectrum as it goes up to the AM band. Perhaps the one in kinks stays within audio range?

Could you share a schematic that changes the white noise to a brown noise generator? Can you turn this circuit into a brown noise generator by changing the capacitance values in the circuit, or do you have to put an RC filter on the output?
@atomictraveller
@atomictraveller 2 года назад
brown noise was throbbing gristle's joke back in the 1970s, and a bunch of really boring people repeating it over and over and over and over ever since. brownian noise isn't a joke tho.

I am making this now.. only on the project board it sounds nice... but when I solder it, I get a lot of (static) noise as well... all connections are good, i even tryed it twice... but the same issue. Power supply is the same as the one I am using on the breadbord... what can be the cause of this?
@thedaveredline

Been trying this four times now but I only get static. Have tried the design you used, tried copying yours from the video and doing another one by blake ordnance. I’ve used four different power sources and teo different guitar amps. Am I missing something?
@brandobin
@brandobin 3 года назад
Noise = static that's the point of the module. Generally it's filtered & gated to create percussion

would this build work with only +9v dc as opposed to +12vdc?
3 года назад
Yes. That would work. Maybe one or two resistors might have to change.
