Propane is liquid and needs to be warm enough to boil to a gas for usage. As the level in the tanks drops, the amount of tank surface area will not allow the cold inside the tank to be warmed by the outside (-6F) air. Eventually, the propane will become cold enough that it doesn't boil fast enough. If you hear the furnace pulsating, thats the gas pressure rising, and the flame gets larger, then the pressure drops and the flame goes out. Put the tank valve in the center so it will take out of both tanks at once. This will give the liquid inside some more time and surface area to warm up. Also, uncover the propane tanks, or open the tank door to let the cold out. It's usually not the lines or regulator that freezes up. It's the liquid in the bottom that is too cold. Keep your tanks topped up. You can't get all the propane out of the tank when it's cold
My buddy and I were on the Appalachian trail in 1976 on winter break from college. A blizzard hit and it dropped to minus six, and we were in a tent with no heat source. However, we did have a six pack of beer with us. The beer froze and burst the cans in the tent. We did have down sleeping bags and other good gear with us, so we were fine, and that was one of the best times in my life.
You two are so cute together in your winter adventure with your puppy. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with winter camping. You guys ROCK!
I learned a little trick to make your truck into a warmer blanket?, i bought a large blue tarp that would cover from the ground up and high enough up to the truck windows, ? why your thinking, ? you place the tarp on the ground , drive onto the tarp , lifting the sides up to the cap height , tying rope from one side to the other side, holding the tarp up and the same over the camper with longer rope, ? why again? as you know that blocking the cold to pass under the trucj makes it colder inside, blocking the wind under its hot on the inside/ ! i did this trick in wy. during the time i was working in the snow at a refinery on a job site, , . this is the same as people tht winterize there trailer with wood around there trailer so the wind doesnt go under the trailer, the tarp is for the truck
You guys look like you're having a lot of fun. . I don't know what your battery capacity is but i would have guessed that the furnace would chew it up quickly, especially if it can not be recharged due to insufficient solar or cold temp. I use Mr Buddy with a wood stove fan works well no electricity needed. Save the furnace for overnight. Extreme cold presents significant challenges....not limited to freezing tanks. Some window and vent insulation covers might help too. Happy Trails
Our furnace is on the smaller side (11,000BTU) and only draws 60w while it is on. We've had a Mr. Buddy in the past but opted to get rid of it so we don’t have to carry the extra propane tanks. Great idea with the wood stove fan though!
Cleaning the snow off the truck is a double-edged sword it takes the weight off but it also insulates the truck from the cold... I love winter camping but I was born and brought up in New Hampshire so I'm used to the snow and cold. Lol. When we went camping in the really cold we used to wrap our batteries in insulation..
I wondered about that before cleaning it off, maybe I'll try leaving it on next time and see if it helps insulate at all! Thanks for the comment and suggestion
Love you guys, but you crack me up! Most people head to warmer climates in the winter…chasing 70° weather. But you two, nooooooo you just have to go against the norm and chase the cold and snowy Colorado mountains weather! Lol Love it and glad you’re enjoying yourselves. Already looking forward to your next location and video. As always, stay safe (and now warm) out there…..
I’m thinking about 1inch sheet of insulation between truck bed and camper. Think the floor would stay warmer? Put the reflective side to reflect heat back onto floor?
People say I'm crazy but I can't wait to see snow. I haven't seen snow since the early 90s. I love cuddling up underneath the blankets watching the snow outside feeling a warm heat.
If you open a vent just a bit, it would reduce your condensation and freezing windows.... and reduce a chance for carbon monoxide... But, You are still living my dream! Thanks for sharing...
Very Pretty…do you worry your Fur Baby will get frost bite on its paws if you are cold so are they of course we live in Texas and we are wearing shorts at the beach…stay warm and God Bless…🐾🧸
Well as long as you are above -30 you should be fine but anything colder like -40 that's when problems start to creep in - like propane not vaporizing fast enough if high demand to run your furnace - Me living up here in the carriboo of 100 mile house in Canada our coldest night drops to -46 degrees in the winter... Yikes that's chilly.. MMMM Yeah!!! COLD Brrrr
it's probably been mentioned, or you've thought of it, but if you make some doubled-up reflectix panels for your windows it'll really help with insulation...we've been down under 10 in our FWC with propane heat & supplementary buddy heater & we keep it over 50, so that's nice. plus, invest in a couple of wool blankets be all you ever need. more snow camping!!!
I am trying to be respectful bit people poop so what's the deel hold it for entire vacation just wondering because my wife and I have a bucket with a garbage bag and kitty litter
I live in Fruita, Colorado - Colorado National Monument a must see. Fruita is Mountain Biking Capitol in USA, lots of off road biking, also river rafting on Colorado River, wine tasting, etc. Western Slope has lots to offer 🤗
Subscribed as you’re very authentic and both make me smile . Please know that you’re both so awesome and lovable and you never ever need to be anything but you. We tune in for you and if you don’t have time for something or maybe you didn’t get a shot you wanted ….it’s all ok as we don’t know We’re just grateful we get to go along for the ride :) God bless and Angels be with you
I would recommend buying a small propane generator. ALP has a 1000 watt one that I use in my sprinter van. It could power the fan on your furnace while charging your batteries. My batteries charge at 400 watts per hour. My generator will run roughly 60 hours on a 20lb tank, at 50-60 % output. You can and should probably consider a heater for your battery box. It can be as simple as an incandescent bulb wired to a temp controller to turn on the bulb and keep box temp above 35 and below 40 to keep your batteries over freezing so you can charge when sun is out. Nothing will destroy your LI ION BATTERY like charging at below freezing. Sounds like your system is trying to protect from that at least. Nice videos BTW.
Great idea with the propane generator, I’ve seen some cool ones recently and especially dual fuel generators. We actually just picked up a small heating pad to keep on our battery to help with temperature regulation. Thanks for the support!
We lived north of Pine Junction off of Mt Evans Road for many years before moving to East Texas. We enjoyed camping around South Fork, Buena Vista, Leadville Silverton and Lake George. Our camping was always close to where we could fly fish for trout and kayak on a lake. Rocky Mountain National Park offers year round camping at Moraine Park (beautiful), but there are no hookups. Lots of hiking and fishing in RMNP, plus Estes Park is a cute little town. Also the area on the west side of RMNP is nice, Grandby and Grand Lake offers a lot of camping. All kidding aside, the Denver metro area has a lot of sketchy areas, so be careful if you venture into Denver. My work requires me to be in Denver four days a month unless I'm on work travel and I'm constantly on the look out for someone wanting to create trouble. So just be cautious is all I'm saying. There is also a community near where you're at in Park County called Harris Park, it has its issues even though there are some great people in the area, there are some people that are not so great. Not sure if you're into trout fishing, but its a great hobby and we are able to pack our fly fishing gear into our Artic Fox truck camper. I built a storage area under our bed, framed it in with 2x3's then put peg board on top so our mattress lays flat and breaths. We put fishing gear, coleman stove, food storage, etc in the storage area. Anyway, Colorado has some great fisheries, we practice catch and release, but sometime we keep a few for an awesome trout dinner over the campfire. Take care and safe travels.
Thanks for all the great suggestions! We lived in the Littleton area for a year and almost never went downtown. Good idea on the under bed storage platform, if we had more headroom in the cabover I would have done something similar. The occasional trout on the campfire is always a great dinner. We appreciate the support and have a great week!
Personally I’ve got to desire to camp in the snow and that low of temperature we ordered and bought a new Lance 1172 truck camper late last year we haven’t tried it out yet. It’s a 4 season lithium batteries and solar power and a generator. Your camper looks in nice shape nice and cozy👍🇨🇦
So cool & crisp. I'm born & raised up north in Pennsylvania, but now reside Virginia. I kinda miss the snow. I haven't had any snow this year. So thanks for sharing your coldness & snow.
we ice fish in -20, the only issue we have ever had is the regulator freezes up on propane tanks, get a high flow regulator if you can, usually red screw ons and not green, hole is bigger for propane to flow better, and we run a honda generator to keep batteries charged good luck
If you cover camper with tarp, and keep windows covered, it would probably help retain heat in your camper. Without covers on windows and top of camper it’s going to be difficult to keep heat inside.
You look cold :( Those walls aren't made for that temp. You'll find mold INSIDE your walls You'll smell the mold in the spring when the sun hits it. Being there done that.
Vent your roof vent open the tiniest bit and run the exhaust fan out all night. Seems counter productive but will pull the heat to the cabover and will exhaust all of your moisture and prevent window condensation. (we live in Alaska and truck camp in very low temps).
We used to carry a buddy heater but since we don’t have an outdoor grill the extra propane tanks took up too much space. The backup heater is a great option though!
Great video. I subscribed when you got the Lance and have really enjoyed watching. Winter camping is worth the challenges. We have a Bigfoot camper. It has a 30k btu heater and dual pane windows. We are pretty comfortable in any weather. I am 80 and my wife is 78, so we have to be sure we are safe. We took a 3 month trip to Newfoundland last year and are going back this year. You should consider it in your future travels. It is truly amazing. We live in Colorado.
Thanks for the long time support! I LOVE the Bigfoot campers, it seems like they’re made wonderfully and if the newer ones were cheaper we’d consider it in the next year or two. Also, heard great things about Newfoundland and its on our list next time we’re in the area!
Yes, I think a wood stove would be awesome, but we don't have any extra countertop space so there isn't a great area for one. I think it could be done in a slightly larger truck camper though
I love how he's doing everyhting like cooking, cleaning, driving and she's just "Yeah, I'm fake-smiling as long as I need for him to get the 100k subs or I'll leave him the next day."
Just subscribed! I do hate the snow. We moved from central CA to WI, so will never get used to the cold snowy mos of winter here. But I enjoy you guys doing it!
Highly recommend the Olympia Wave3 catalytic heater as an supplemental option, you can plumb the gas from your LP directly to it, and mount to a low wall by the door. Its a steady dry heat - efficient on LP use, great for steady overnight sleeping heat. I never use the furnce, except occasional 1st thing in morning. - (somebody that has done many N. Idaho winter nights in a Lance) Also, Wiggy's sleeping bags!
We lived here for a year and fell in love with the mountains. Ever since we left we've been wanting to come back and figured some winter camping would be a fun reason to do so!
I've only camped down to freezing but it was in a tent. The medium quality sleeping bags were adequate with the zip together feature so we could share mutual body heat. I'd be willing to try what they did provided I had enough backup heat methods.
My Arctic fox 811 comes with on many ice fishing adventures. Does fine well below zero but i do have secrets. Battery operated fans can blow heat in areas susceptible to freezing (pull drawers out), keep the generator inside (suitcase honda 2200) and warm, run two 30 lb propane tanks so you can stay warm for a week or better. Have fun guys. Truck campers rule. Only camper that keeps my toys with at all times; snowmobile, sxs, & boat.
Cool rig. Actually our 2nd winter in our rv it wasn't to bad compared to our first yr. It was hard cold and had a lot of condensation were located in CT. And we Def enjoy the south now we r our in our 40s. But my girl has had enough And wants a tiny house. So we're gonna fix all the little issues we have and sell our navion Mercedes 25 ft diesel. It's been fun but time for a change. But awesome rig u have. And u missed out I was working at this storage place and I was left 3 full units of books and movies probably 200 k. Books maybe more. Sold a bunch but had to throw out 4 dumpsters full. I didn't want to but books and book readers have come obsolete due to our phones and lab tops.
Hi, first time watching your channel. Enjoyed it. I’m looking for a basic truck camper that does not need to be winterized as I would be back in Fl. I would love to know specifically which Lance camper you have and the yr. Thx
I love camping in the winter months as its much better for sleeping. When its hot & humid ugh! Ive camped in the Rockies a few time but have a cabin to stay in with a wood stove you have to use pellets in Colorado they dont allow wood fires. I think you need to buy better insulated window blinds keeps your heat in better. You might want to put insulation under your camper as well. Ive also camped in Alaska in a motorhome now it gets down right freezing cold there. I love your channel & your a really cute couple & love your doggie to.❤❤ smiles
Don’t have supplementary heater going in that temp. You need furnace to heat the underbelly. I would have drained tanks and water lines. I would use water in 5 gal. containers in that temp.
Let’s be honest-You have each other on those coldest of nights,Like they say if someone has Hypothermia-Both of you to get unclothed into the sleeping back together,Use your energy together keeping warm.
It ran almost all night! We fill the bottle anytime it shows below 30 for the night. Kind of inconvenient but we're in a town for groceries every 2-3 days anyway!
Hi What's going on ( Living Large camping ) I gotta say I love doing the Camping where ever I can how ever I can We just pull over to national parks or rest area's like open parking lots etc
Look on I overlander plenty of boondocking west of u in that area I hope u have a spare propane bottle with u also maybe some zero degree sleeping bags just in case
Seems like there is a ton to the west of us! Our sleeping bag is 32º but a warmer one would be wise. We're in town every 3-4 days for groceries and always top off the propane but anything longer and we'd definitely need a second tank
