Jennifer Siebel Newsom is a filmmaker, actress, spokesperson and advocate. She talks about how the media shapes our perceptions about gender and about our potential, calling on women and men to challenge the media and its male-dominated discourse, while empowering women to take on leadership positions.
TEDxWomen was curated and produced by The Paley Center for Media. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Such a fantastic message for women and young girls growing up. I am frightened what the media is doing to the minds of the children I work with on a daily basis and if we as a population do exactly what she is saying, the world and media could be a much better place.

I am so appreciative of this delicate approach. I lack such tact. We are lucky to have another woman that will stand up and demand change in their community members behavior and actions. By stating the obvious, people often get offended and I think she pulled this off with a grace I couldn't. It is important to have a variety of tactics when trying to make a lasting change in a patriarchal and oppressive country. I agree with her intent. #Feminism

My daughter loves pink dresses and princess and I was extremely careful not to plant such ideas in her head. This is how she was born, this is her original personality. I don't wear dresses or much makeup. She is 3 and she asked me if I know how to paint my face and if I can paint my eyes lol She is very into makeup and girly dresses and singing and dancing. I don't mind. She can love it and still become a scientist. She can be whatever she wants. I won't push her to dream about power ic this is not what she feels like she was born to achieve. Let's respect the personality and ambition of each child. Let's allow then to become what they truly want.

She brings up several things that I knew, but had not thought of as a problem. I purchased "Miss Representation" up seeing the wildly positive reviews for it on Amazon. Can't wait to see it.

I cannot begin to tell you how much I appreciate this message. I am one of those kids that was exposed to the medias message at a very young age. I am now 28 and still battling low self esteem and body image. But I am determined to get your message out there and I have been since I viewed Miss-representation, I am on a mission to engage people and enlighten them on this topic, one person at a time. Thanks for all of your research and passion.

To anyone who is doubtful that sexism is alive and thriving, please read the comments posted below. Every time that a woman speaks out against sexism, she is rewarded with this type of drivel. Many thanks to Jennifer Siebel Newsom for this courageous initiative.

@drrjtco she's done quite some impressive things, she got an MBA from Stanford, she's done extensive service, she made a film on women portrayed by media and society, and she is a spokesperson for women's rights. That shows me leadership, thrive to bring awareness to an issue that's often overlooked. She happened to fall for a rich man, good for her! Imo the fact that she took the time to defend her point of view is admirable, half the people I know wont do anything, ever! educate yourself.

The fact that we have to have 2 parents working, to pay the bills is bad enough. Media -has gone behind our backs a taken control of our childs mind. My son was violent and my daughter learned the same, to protect herself, from guys her age that had no empathy. This lady is right on. As for Feminists, I dont know - I guess they convinced my X to toss the kids in the trashcan. I was one male who would not let my kids go through hell. I did bring them up, with help. Thanks for these talks!

@randommss why would you say that? did you judge your mum for crying when she was worried when you had a fever as a kid? or your sister when someone broke her heart? or your wife when she wasn't feeling well and had a lot on her mind to stress over? how about your daughter, when someone said something mean to her?...i believe that being strong has nothing to do with if you cry or not, but how you handle situations overall in life and never give up. and that applies to the gentlemen too. love!

"If what that gets out there [..] is put there by men we're not gonna make any progress" (01:20) I strongly oppose this statement. The problem isn't "men", it's our culture! I see a lot of women harassing other women about their looks, about their careers (You're not taking proper care of your husband, your kids) etc. I feel this is a strong misconception. Fighting for women's rights and respect and opportunities are NOT about opposing men, it's about bettering the image we have of women.

Dressing well and presenting yourself well is not a negative. She would not get into these roles, or be listened to without all that. Yes, I understand your point but she is saying about the extremes, can you honestly say you don't agree, or at least understand what she is saying. Which part of it is false? Yes, everything is fine in moderation including tv, reality shows, dressing up, slimming down, but to the extent that it is fed to us?

It is not about dressing up or wearing make up. That comment about the perfume, men also wear cologne if they prefer to. She's wearing a dress and heels? So what? It's not like she's wearing a bikini on stage. Wearing a dress is NOT what this video is about. She's looking for equality and how people view women because of the media. There will ALWAYS be a difference between women and men.

Mrs. Newsom and Mayor Newsom, here is a link to just some of what I too have witnessed myself personally about the Head of the San Francisco Family Superior Court Judge Patrick Mahoney by attorneys and litigatants if you want to look for unequal treatment of men and women in your very backyard affecting lives directly and that goes on everyday and that affects children EVERYDAY, now without their fathers because of Judge Mahoney:

in Young Adult lit, there are a TON of smart and intelligent young women for role models. don't look to media for influence-look at literature for heroes and examples. Hermione (harry potter), Annabeth (percy jackson an the olympians), Katniss (hunger games), Stargirl (stargirl) are just a few books that have strong and intelligent female examples.

I am disappointed after scrolling through half of the comments that I saw in this video. Everyone pays attention to the screen too much to a point that they do not realize what she is actually saying. People commented on "oh she's wearing a dress and make up and she has LONG HAIR." So what? Is it wrong for her to wear a dress? She's saying that women are viewed wrongly by the society because of demeaning images that oozes sex.
@swizzazn

it has everything to do with the physiological differences. If women had the same physical appearance as men they would already be a step closed to equal treatment.
@suikasudesuu
@suikasudesuu 11 лет назад
Why are you avoiding the real point of the video itself? If it weren't for her children, she wouldn't have fought so hard to get rid of the sex and violence in the media. I really don't understand why you comment on such minuscule details rather than absorbing what she's saying. I can't change what you think about the video, but she's a human and a parent. Without directing a movie, she wouldn't be feed them.

I completely agree with the stop hating & start supporting. Regardless of where the 'origins' lay us women continue to perpetuate this division by judging ourselves & then judging other women often times in an attempt to make ourselves feel 'better'. Stay at home moms judge working moms & vice versa, we try to find a flaw in the beautiful actress to make her unlikable ie "she may be pretty but it's ALL photoshop". The magazines? Who buys them? Women. Just saying WE can stop this if we choose.

The current failing of the women's movement can be blamed on us women. We are the most critical of ourselves and each other. When we decide to quite hating the pretty, skinny girl before we even know who she is, then maybe we can start to move forward. We are also the one's choosing to be portrayed in videos/print ads. Don't hate the model making a living, hate that YOU feel the need to buy the magazine and then compare yourself to the girls in the ads.

Presidents traditionally are males who come from rich backgrounds and have family in politics. Your son fits that stereotype, so people sent him that message. It's the way the world is right now. After we have some female presidents, it'll change and then people of BOTH genders who come from rich backgrounds and family in politics will have that treatment. The media reflects the culture, it doesn't determine it.

@ARose489 True, but I've noticed a lot of times (I've worked with shelters and feminist movement stuff) people make it sound as if it's all the men's fault, it's always the men needs to do something, it's "we, the women" need to step up and change the evil male-led world. Even if that isn't the way people mean, it creates an impression of a sort of we/them attitude, "for something against someone" instead of a more productive "how can we all go together and fix this".
@Anyguy4321

You do realize for women to break this down, they also have to discard the subtle advantages society affords them. For one, women are never expected to take dangerous jobs like firefighting or serving in the military. The selective service (draft) is still men only. Also in organized sports, women aren't expected to play to win but to play "nice." The coach of a middle school basketball team was fired because her team completely smashed the other team. Equality MEANS equality.

@firestrings272 Sometimes in nature mothers eat their young too. Nature doesn't apply here. The greatest feat of a woman is to reject societal limitations placed on her by patriarchal institutions and accomplish whatever feats she's capable of. If she chooses to be a mother then she should be celebrated for that. If she chooses to be a scientist, a teacher, and athlete, an engineer, or even the president of the United States, she should be celebrated for that as well.

@DKBuzzsaw no you USED to be under compensated. dont get me wrong, I am a Muslim and i firmly believe in equity. however males and females are different mentally and psychologically (and physically for that matter) - so discrepancies are always going to exist - in the work place, in real life, at the club, ANYWHERE. there are inherent differences and they are in this time and age more balanced then ever.im aware of glass ceiling and stuff like that but if you look at a broader view we r on par.

It's like I was talking in Japanese to you, and you just wanted to say something that can make you feel good. If the stats are against what I'm saying, then that means AnT does earn subscriptions. If "creating a new standard for yourself"is exactly what these women are trying to do, then how can I be just talking about myself? You see how contradictory these two things are?

I do think that the message of feminine equality gets undermined when you only hear it coming from a white, upper-class women. Granted, women are belittled in show business when it comes to age and educational status, but you want to enter a profession where you absolutely know they are largely responsible for women's objectification. Maybe its just me, but seeing an assortment of women from different classes, ethniticities, and backgrounds would maybe help the message sink in for those less enthusiastic about hearing it. Not to mention if a man were to relay the same message would it be as scrutinized? just a thought.

I don't really agree with her using the example of the woman that called the mayor to have a billboard taken down. Force is the least effective way to do anything, you can't police morality. It's why the war on drugs isn't working. The people of society have to change, which is done through debate. Something we are reluctant to do now a days.

Would you rather she wore sweats, a baggy t-shirt, uncombed hair, and no makeup when trying to convey a message to the nation? In order to be respected one must be put together and dressed appropriately for the occasion. Men wear suits to debates, they comb their hair, THEY even wear makeup on national television. Just because she dresses professionally does not mean she is not affected by the current media situation. And by the way, not all women "cry as loud as possible irrelevant nonsense..."

You don't give people much credit & if trends and media control everthing women do then you're right, there is no hope...I knew those advertisers were smart but apparently they are geniuses! I can only hope we are smarter than you think...that we can have independent thoughts & turn things around. We fought hard for "all men are greated equal" to include women but then we perpetuate the idea that not all women are created equal by judging each other on looks first.

I enjoyed at least the first part of this video but as it continued something bugged me about it. I finally put my finger on it; this presentation is comprised mostly of opinion. Ted is usually about facts and at the least ideas. A presentation of concepts and changes can't be dominated by speculation and personal experience. Nothing wrong with those things, but that is what drew me away from this particular video. PS I agree with a lot of what is being said here, but those are also my opinions.
