Today we wanted to commemorate a sad day, and pay tribute to a television and 20th century entertainment icon and legend who's amazing impact on the medium is still being felt today.
Walt Disney passed away 50 years ago today, on December 15, 1966. In our minds, his death marked the end of an era of the amazing and tumultuous 1960's decade. The decade almost played out like a three act play, with the first part of the decade of hope and optimism of the 'Camelot' era, encompassing the first four years: 1960 through 1963, ending with the assassination of President Kennedy.
The second phase of 'Flight' of the 1960s was one of progress and accomplishment, running from 1964 through 1966. The country 'grew up' during this time, with great strides in space exploration, the World's Fair in Flushing New York, economic boom time and American financial and global power that reached its zenith in the summer of 1966, and an explosion of pop culture and entertainment, a portion of which was exemplified by the incredible success of the Walt Disney Corporation.
Although no one knew it at the time, that cultural American high peaked in 1966, and would usher in a more 'Somber' third phase of the 1960s from 1967 through 1969 that would foretell what was to come in the 1970's. In many ways, the hope, optimism and sky high, linear, unending progress that Americans had come to enjoy and expect post War would waver and pivot as 1966 came to a close, and in many ways, the death of Walt Disney was symbolic of that 'end of an era'. It truly was a close to the 'good times' era, and only now, in retrospect, can we really see that in all its glory and melancholy sadness.
The impact Walt Disney (and his Disney Corporation), had on television, the entertainment industry, and the American culture (and world wide culture) cannot be underestimated. He was truly one of the great men of the 20th Century, and although we paid tribute to him here at Television Vanguard last December (2015), we could not let this day go by without commemorating him one more time.
Rest in peace Walt Disney.
This video clip is presented here on RU-vid for the entertainment and informational value of the viewer, and no copyright infringement is intended. We want to thank the fine folks at PBS and American Masters productions, of which this video clip originated. The full length show can be seen on PBS from time to time (it was first broadcast fall 2015) on your local PBS station, and can be ordered in DVD format online at PBS.org.
Thank you Walt.

When Walt Disney died, a very large part of America died with him. America and Disneyland are simply not the same since the passing of Walt Disney and John F. Kennedy. There is almost no hope left in America today. RIP Walt Disney and thanks for the great movies and the fun we all had at your park. Yes I miss him and his nine old men terribly. This little video brought a tear to my eye........

What about Michael Eisner? When he was in charge of Disney during the 90s, he not only saved Disney from ruin, but brought a new era of Animated movies which was the Disney Renaissance. Other studios like Warner Bros, Fox, Paramount and Sony tried to copy off of the Disney Renaissance, but that era of Disney wasn’t remembered because of its stellar animation, it was remembered because of its classical and well written characters from Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Lion King, Pocahontas, Hunchback of Norte Dame, Hercules, Mulan and Tarzan.

Of course. I realized that it was during Moana’s theatrical run when it was exactly half a century since that fateful moment occurred. Seems like perfect timing that this episode of the PBS American Experiences series was cranked out when that aforementioned event was rapidly approaching.

Only 5 as of 2021, and it's only a matter of time before the RU-vid Thumbs Downers find every video and try to counter the likes (just like all the cancel culture kids running around trying to stop everything that the rest of the world loves). Sadly there are those that refuse to listen to facts from those who knew Walt and choose to instead believe a variety of falsehoods about how he treated women, blacks, jews etc.

I sang one of his favorite songs from Mary Poppins it's...Feed the Birds. I sang it to Walt Disney every year and the month of December on his birthday on the 5th of December and his death day on December 15th. If he was listening to this song up in heaven right now, I'm sure that he would be very pleased and happy.

They don’t really make them like Walt anymore. He truly was a visionary and had a brilliant mind. He made something extraordinary. It’s a shame the company doesn’t have another Walt because Disney is losing its creative edge. We don’t need or want more remakes. We need something new and original. Someone like Walt would come up with some great ideas.

Even though Walt Disney didn't necessarily path them on the back or anything I think just by Walt Disney smiling at them while they were playing or writing their songs is still a compliment for them he was the type of guy in this situation he didn't have to say anything to the brothers for the brothers to know that they were appreciated by Walt Disney an importantly valued by him for his company it's kind of like those people that can't say I love you but the express it buy a smile by helping them out what's writing songs giving them ideas like as we all know he did with Mary Poppins helping them out giving them ideas Walt Disney didn't need to say anything Bible sounds of it just as I described was Walt Disney right there so in other words Walt Disney gave them a thousand times compliment just from this alone helping out working with the brothers to come up with ideas for songs.

The American exceptionalism that was can be embodied in such men of vision as Walt Disney. His far-seeing futurism knew no bounds. I would also argue that in the age of Disney there were others of such foresight and ambition, including the likes of L.B. Mayer, Darryl F. Zanuck, and, David O. Selznick. Today, many of these get trashed for the imperfections in their nature. No kidding. They were human - and flawed. But Walt, among the rest, was a gentleman's gentleman, desiring truly to elevate the art of animation and create a unified vision of what childhood is - or was - all about. If he could see what has since become of his empire, the grotesque lack of investment in ingenuity, the woke-saturated misguidance of his precepts for a happy vision of those formative years, unencumbered by the idiocy of politicized adult influences, and the skyrocketing and prohibitive cost to attend his theme parks (roughly $9000 a day for a family of 4 - not including meals and souvenirs) he surely would weep.
