An ex-colleague convinced me into stock trading and investment as a means of making more income maybe because of the few commissions she earns bringing people. Sad i fell, My portfolio have been down ever since. Next time, i will first spend my money on myself before investing.

I wouldn't be bummed out that much unless you invested in companies who aren't going to rebound. The hardest part of investing is doing nothing. This happens every few years, decade or so, I wouldn't be too concerned unless you're planning on retiring right now - in which case you want to look at diversification more than just one investment strategy/area.
