Linda Blair more than earned her Oscar nomination for this movie. She deserved it. The same goes to the radio actress Mercedes McCambridge who portrayed the demon's voice. Chilling combination of talent!

A lot of people miss the point that it is Burke's voice asking Chris if she knows what her daughter did, and emphasizing it by twisting the head around, just like Burke was found.

What people sometimes don't realize is that Reagan was the one who snuck into the church and desecrated the Mary statue. And while the detector was talking with the mom. She snuck downstairs and took the crucifix and ran back into the room before she started stabbing herself with it. But what makes it so scary is we never see her do all these things. It is all off camera.

Linda Blair (Reagan) actually has a cameo as a reporter who shouts questions at Sidney after the initial murders in Scream.

I watched this movie once when it was first released. I saw it with a Catholic friend who explained the Catholic specific aspects, such as the importance of the St Christopher medal (patron saint of travelers). The significant point is that the little girl had never been the demon's main target. The demon had been targeting Father Karras all along. But in the end, Karras acknowledged (by the squeezing of the hand) the Last Rites being spoken of him, and thus his soul was still saved.

Demons try to confuse, mixing truth with lies. That's why the demon (Pazuzu) reacted from the tap water. The statue was of Pazuzu, the demon named in the book.

The priest’s mother was possessed. If you hear what the man said at the party, “She was dead a couple of days before they found her.” But Damien literally saw his mother alive that very day. Also, when possessed Regan says to Damien, “Your mother’s in here, Karras. Would you like to leave a message?” That was a hidden reveal that Damien’s mother was possessed when she died.

For the year 1973, it surely is the most realistic film to date. The amount of work it took to pull all those tricks was amazing, you should watch the documentary.

I first watched this when I was 19 and it weirded me out. It wasn't just the story, but the way they shot it is just eerie. Older horror films like The Exorcist, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Nightmare, are far scarier imo because of the style it's shot in. They don't make horror films like this anymore. Horror films nowadays seem clean cut. All these older films are as unnatural as their source material.

The scariest thing about this reaction was watching Alanda's wine glass being shook around like it was possessed! I was sitting here praying to whoever listening that Alanda's super cute sweater didn't get stained! And she never spilled a drop! She needs an award for that.

This movie is glorious. It took horror into the realm of artistic story telling, and really broke the mold.

Hmmm, as terrible as the events are in this book and film, I have always viewed it as more of a love story. A devoted mothers love for her daughter, doing whatever she could for her. Father Karass's love for his mother and being unable to help her. Finding his faith in God again and ultimately giving his life for a child he didn't even know. Reagan kissing the priest at the end of things. Of course there is the whole demon thing, but, the strong theme of love running through the story from beginning to end , at least for me, seems to be more of the central point.

As an 8 year old kid in '73, we knew all the cuss words. We didn't need the internet. As my late mom used to tell me, 'you and friends were awful, bratty potty mouths'.

Can you imagine how audiences reacted to this in the 70s well before we got desensitised to horror films. People were fainting, puking and leaving the cinema.

Fun fact: Max von Sydow, the actor who played elderly "Father Archaeology", was only in his mid-40s when he made this movie (he was heavily made up). That's like if they made the movie today and cast Tobey Maguire in the role.

My high school teacher was the religious advisor for The Exorcist. He was an old thin priest who looked like the Max Von Sydow Father Merrick. Of course, we asked him of he had ever performed an exorcism, but he would not tell us.

When the movie came out most people had never heard about Exorcisms as even the church rarely brought it up among themselves. And this was the first movie that used a Ouija board as a gate to bad things entering your life, at the time you could buy Ouija boards at toy stores in the board game section.

It's an album-length piece of music that was already released before they started making the movie. They came out with a single-length version, which got up to number seven on the Billboard pop charts. The movie helped sales of the album, and it boosted Mike Oldfield's career. He continued to make album-length pieces after that. One of the best is Ommadawn. Oldfield also wrote the song Family Man, which was a hit for Hall and Oates. Ellen Burstyn, who played the mom, was also in Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, The Last Picture Show, Harry and Tonto, Same Time Next Year, How to Make an American Quilt, W., and Interstellar. She's still working at the age of 88, and according to imdb will be in a remake of The Exorcist in 2023. The saddest part is the exorcism of Reagan didn't work. Damien had to transfer the demon into him and kill himself in order to save her.

I’ve seen this movie more times than I can remember but it still gives me chills. There’s no high tech or fancy special effects. Just great acting, makeup artistry, and cinematography.

The crucifix scene it’s so underrated and to me, it was the scariest thing I’ve ever seen in a horror movie.

The demon is Pazuzu and Father Merrin had excised Pazuzu before and the demon is out for revenge. Merrin finds the statue of Pazuzu and medallion . Yes, the medallion protects and it was protecting Father Karras. The movie is the slowest burn but also the hottest burn. It is amazing what they were able to do as you could never make that film today. After thousands of horror movies viewed, this is still the movie that scares me. It is just too well made.

My heart totally shattered when Damien engulfed the demon and sacrificed his life but I suppose he probably would've felt like he had nothing to live for with his mother being gone and didn't look like he had kids or any friends at his late age either. That easily sympathetic-relatable character lived a very much dark, depressing, lonely, battered life.

Soon as you said I didn't know this was rated R I knew you were in for a suprise. The ear rings, the washing machine line, the moment everyone has where they don't think they can continue to watch. This reaction is absolute gold! Thank you.

When the detective left and Chris ran up the stairs, you reached for your wine and all I thought was "oh no, not the time to be sipping." Good thing it was half empty or it woulda been all over the place when the crucifixion scene began.

Movie that remains in memory for yrs to come. The young girl hurt her back in the scene where she is in bed going back & forth. They also thought she was possessed after the movie came out. I saw this for the first time on my 13th birthday. Unfortunately, my two best friends, my little brother, and the dog were all over the house with me, and it was right after school, so it didn't stick the landing for us as we hoped. About six years later my BFF and I rented it and watched it again, in a mutual friend's attic bedroom, in the middle of the night...and let's just say it hit quite different. To this day I'm obsessed with the acting in this movie, especially Jason Miller's (Father Karras). His intensity in this role has influenced a lot more of my art than that distracted, newly-minted teenager ever would have guessed.

My mom said she brought her Bible to the movie theater when she went to see this. That spoke volumes to me so I waited until I was grown, watched it in the middle of a sunny day with the blinds and widows open...and a Bible too!

The opening scene explain. Lankester Merrin a veteran Catholic priest is on an archaeological dig in the ancient city of Hatra in Iraq. Alerted by a colleague, he finds a sculpture that resembles Pazuzu, a demon of ancient origins with whose history Merrin is familiar. Soon afterwards, after taking heart medication, Merrin encounters a statue towering over him in the image of Pazuzu, an omen warning him of a looming confrontation. Two dogs begin fighting and snarling at each other in the dust. [This struggle foreshadows the eventual conflict between good (the priest) and evil (the possessed girl), and also hints at the theme of "evil against evil".

The MPAA used to have an X-rating for mainstream films. It was eventually phased out and replaced with the NC-17 rating we're familiar with today. Several films now considered classics were initially rated X when they first came out: Midnight Cowboy, A Clockwork Orange, Last Tango in Paris. Producers for The Exorcist were worried that the film would receive an X-rating and that they would have to make cuts. However, the MPAA rated the film R without any cuts required.

The upside down backwards crab walk down the stairs scene is forever burned into my memory from when I was a kid and saw it for the first time. I've never watched that part again...I always look away when I watch reactors react to The Exorcist. 😂

First time I saw "The Exorcist" was when I was 15, and I had to shut it off after Regan's head turned around the first time. I watched the Exorcist when I was 6 or 7 years old; Lead to years of nightmares. Well, it must have toughen me up because very little frightens me anymore. Anyways... I have seen several reactions of the Exorcist on RU-vid and, Alanda, your reaction was the most funniest and intelligent one yet. You understood the plot and each scene very well. You are completely right...back then a Rated R movie was extremely taboo back in the 70's. I was a kid at that time and the rating system back then was G was for kids, PG was for adults, there was no PG-13, and an R truly was Restricted and viewed an only a movie that either had nudity and sex or was so vile that only certain types of people went and viewed them. They later said that the studio went to some extreme lengths to get the movie changed from an X rating to the R rating that they wanted. This movie especially was very controversial and taboo. There was also a lot of controversy over what they had Linda Blair do in that movie at 12 years old, such a young age. When the movie aired in theaters movie goers supposedly suffered vomiting, fainting, one heart attack, and even one miscarriage.

Damian’s friend, the priest that gives him absolution as he dies, is a real Jesuit priest named William O’Malley. Another Jesuit priest, Thomas Bermingham, played the Georgetown University president and was a technical advisor on the film. Oh-your earrings are perfect.

FYI Alanda, when The Exorcist first came out people were asked to sign a waiver before purchasing a ticket. But despite her performance in this film, Linda Blair is a really cool lady and hates split pea soup. The "vomit" used in this film.

I was 8 when this came out. My friend, his older brother and I snuck into to the theater to see this. I didn't sleep well for years after this and I told Linda Blair this when I met her in 2018. I got an autographed photo of her as the demon.

If people didn’t tell you already I can reassure that some of the more adult stuff was done by an adult double. They certainly didn’t subject the 14 year old to more than she had probably heard in the school yard. The adult actors had a harder time. The one thing was Linda did have to be freezing cold on set. She also had to endure the backlash of being the “exorcist girl”

All time classic horror. This still holds up after all these years.

The exorcist is still rated as one of the best horror films of all time even though technically it is a theological thriller as Linda Blair described it.

Ft. Marrin had exorcised Pazuzu once before. When he was facing that statue and the white dog and black dog were violently fighting - that was Pazuzu saying "I'm back for round two". Hence Fr. Marrin saying - "there is something I have to do". It's why Pazuzu said "fear the priest" and mentioned him by name.

So glad you watched this, every film fan should watch this. I would recommend a second viewing as there are bits that will be missed and especially focus on the opening Northern Iraq scene. There is so much significance in this 15 minutes and it kinda sets up and foreshadows what is going to happen. The ending of that opening part where Father Marin is facing towards the demon statue is like a here comes Good vs Evil battle. The dogs start fighting with those deep growls and did you noticed before he turned and faced the statue there was a strong gust of wind out of nowhere (representing the presence of evil) and the shadow behind him moved, almost as if the statue itself was moving into position and ready to begin battle. Classic lines from you as always "..just ball her up and put her in the washing machine..."

Fun facts: Along with Ellen Burstyn, Jason Miller/Father Karras and Lee J. Cobb/Lt. Kinderman, they were well-known and respected actors as well. Cobb would've been in The Exorcist III if he hadn't passed away. The movie I remember Cobb most for is the 1960s James Bond spoof movies Our Man FLint & In Like Flint-movie reaction suggestions. Jason Miller is the father of actor Jason Patric. I always looked forward to watching The Exorcist every Halloween; It used to be shown like clockwork every year on Turner Classic Movies, but for the past 2 years including this year, I didn't see it shown on there or on any movie channel or cable/satellite network *sad face*

A lot of the scenes you see where Damian Karris (Jason Miller) turns his head in shock was due to William Frederick shooting a blank gun at random times to get his reaction. It ended up giving him hearing loss because of it.

Exorcist 3 is the “true sequel” and is really good! It continues the story with the detective and priest at the end

Mercedes Cambridge who voices the demon is just the most amazing performance, without that voice the film wouldn't be what it is.
