That’s pretty interesting about Russia. I’m an immigrant from the former Soviet Union and I have an insider perspective on the activity levels there. It’s not that people exercise, it’s that people live a MUCH more physically active lives. You literally walk to everything, even if you have a car, you rarely drive it. You walk to the store, you walk to school, to the bus stop, to the subway, etc. People who live in rural or suburban areas do everything manually and in those areas every one has a garden. The short live span though is due to massive consumption of alcohol I’m sure.

Latvian here.. we eat also fermented cucumber not just pickled. We also eat a lot of sauerkraut.. kefir.. cottage cheese with sour cream... our downfall.. of why logevity isnt high is probably too much alcohol.. and too much cheap modern foods, that half of the population loves. But if u just go traditional, then it Kefir with every meal, herbal teas, cottage cheese, sour cream, dill, sauerkraut, cucumbers and tomatoes, buckwheat or potatoes..

I would also like to add that horticulture has been preserved in our rural regions, and at least in summer vegetables, berries, and leafy vegetables come to the table from our own gardens, the same can be said about apples. We cannot fail to mention our passion😆 for picking mushrooms, picking wild berries - blueberries, lingonberries, cranberries, wild raspberries... And these two activities - gardening and walking in the forest - are also associated with an active lifestyle, with movement in the fresh air.

Thomas really led people astray with this one. Virtually every single pickled product on Modern grocery store shelves in the United States is not a fermented pickling process. They're just adding vinegar and chemically making pickled products. There are no probiotics in these, nor none of the other short chain fatty acids that are made from the fermenting process. You'll have to find a product that is truly fermented or make your fermented pickled products at home. This is so important and I that there's going to be hundreds if not thousands of people that watch this video and then start eating vinegar made pickled products thinking they're getting a bigger health benefit than they actually are. I mean, the vinegar is very helpful but that's only part of it for True fermented vegetables. Much of the health improving aspects of fermented foods is not just the probiotics but the actual short-chain fatty acids and other posts fermentation compounds that are doing the heavy lifting with the health benefits.

What an idiot! Salt is what is needed to get pro/prebiotics. That along with moisture and the bacteria on the vegetable creates it. I do agree that Thomas is incorrect everyday. A month or two later he will change his opinion and change his mind. Every video he has ever recorded has been changed when Thomas learns more. The problem is that every study has flaws and conclusions need to be taken lightly and tested by people individually. Thomas is probably the worst of the keto influencers. If it wasn’t for his genetics and good looks he would not be popular. He is as dumb as a rock. Does not understand what he talks about and just throws up the information. Memory is not intelligence. Standard "pickled" veggies made with vinegar are NOT the same as "fermented" veggies, which have the probiotics and healthy properties... Those are made with just water, salt, and pickling spices, and are left out on the counter for at least a few days to ferment. After whatever you are fermenting is sour enough, then you put the jar into the fridge to keep the contents fresh, and the fermenting process stops under refrigeration...

@@liamneslind5708 I agree that fermented is superior. And I ferment as well. But a blanket statement that pickling vegetables in ACV does nothing is a bit much. And I pickle without cooking the veg. Cold pickling. Been doing it for decades. It helps me get fiber in snacks I enjoy, keeps me from eating starchy snacks, I take in more fluids, acetic acid lowers my appetite, slows absorption of carbs. It’s been used for centuries, so I think it’s ok. But I agree fermented foods hold many more biome benefits. And like I said I do those as well. Cucumbers, carrots, onions, cabbage.

Here are the key takeaways from Thomas DeLauer's video on the best diet for managing insulin resistance, focusing on observations from various countries, particularly Russia: 1. **Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT) as a Measure**: Instead of looking solely at Type 2 diabetes rates, IGT is a better metric for assessing how well populations manage glucose. 2. **Russian Diet Insights**: Despite its reputation for being bland and high in fats, the Russian diet, characterized by high intakes of meat, dairy, and specific carbohydrates like buckwheat and quinoa, shows beneficial effects on blood sugar levels. 3. **Significance of Pickled Vegetables**: A substantial part of the Russian diet includes pickled vegetables, which have been linked to lower risks of Type 2 diabetes. The fermentation process increases the probiotic content, improving gut health and glucose metabolism. 4. **Buckwheat as a Beneficial Carbohydrate**: Buckwheat is a low-glycemic pseudo-cereal that helps in managing glucose levels more effectively than many other carbohydrates. It's a staple in the Russian diet and can be a healthier alternative for people managing blood sugar. 5. **Exercise and Activity Levels**: High levels of physical activity, as observed in Russia, correlate with better glucose management. The study highlighted Russia's high ranking in global physical activity levels. 6. **Cultural Adaptation to Climate**: The use of pickled and fermented foods in Russia is partly a cultural adaptation to the long winters, which restrict access to fresh vegetables. This practice not only preserves vegetables but also enhances their nutritional value. 7. **Practical Application with Technology**: DeLauer advocates using continuous glucose monitors to track how specific foods affect blood sugar levels, allowing individuals to tailor their diets based on real-time data. 8. **Integrating Observations into Diet**: The insights from the Russian diet and lifestyle suggest that incorporating fermented foods, engaging in regular physical activity, and focusing on low-glycemic foods can significantly improve insulin resistance and overall metabolic health.

Very Interesting!!! Though insulin resistance may be low in Russia I’m wondering if their shorter lifespan is due in part not only to alcohol consumption as mentioned, but also the high consumption of animal products. I’m a Type 2 Diabetic who has been controlling my disorder solely through diet. Though low carbohydrate was keeping my numbers looking great these past four years I couldn’t help but wonder what the bigger picture would be years from now. Would I be sacrificing longevity for good blood panels in the present as I eat higher protein and fat. I started looking into “Mastering Diabetes” on RU-vid. You’re very knowledgeable Thomas, so I’d love to hear your thoughts on Whole Food, Plant Based, Low Fat eating to reverse insulin resistance and improve health in the long run? Its the acetate, acetate keeps glucose flat. Alcohol turns into Acetaldehyde , and then into acetate, which is vinegar, which is A short change fatty acid. Alcohol likely masks, a diabetes diagnosis by dropping blood glucose and HBA1C. Diabetes is more than an issue with high glucose. Its a problem with fuel, a mitochondrial issue.

Greetings from Latvia! It's true that we eat a lot of fermented foods like kefir, sauerkraut, pickles and cheeses as well as organic salads straight from our gardens. The reason why we are not at the top is because this is depressive country because of low income and bad government. Depression is the leading cause of illnesses as well as the fact that young generation has stopped practice healthy lifestyle and buys only the cheapest junk food and alcohol they can afford. They are also uneducated about why they have to eat organic or they are just too lazy to grow or pickle their own food, even when they have the option.

My garmin watch hits 100 minutes per DAY on active minutes (aside from the 10k steps) People in the Netherlands are also one of the happiest people in the world. Maybe there is a correlation?

Russia has a very cold climate overall. This puts a huge stress on the body. On the plus side you are constantly burning tons of calories just to stop being cold ...

they also drink alcohol in deadly amounts, so that definitely contributes to low sugar. Idk if this is a good time to hype up russian lifestyle this much tbh

Problem is that people eating to much and they can't stop and sitting in office all time this cause illness. Human body was not created for sitting all day it was made to move all time.. Next thing most food in stores are unhealthy with many chemicals, even veggies, fruits. If you grow them into your yard it is fine.. Diet can lead you to longevity? I'm not sure about that i see some people eating potatoes and they over 100 year old. Even blue zones with high intake of carbs per day they living longer. Why if Glucose not good? and meat is good? Diet is just one part of puzzle, but there is a lot others factors in life.. Nature food and herbs it is key in longevity, it is not about carvinore, or be vegan it is about how you can control hungry feelings eating less and to find mind peace.

I'm gonna have to run off to Russia to farm. I could grow sugar Beets and start a sugar empire, get rich and repeat in every country that is at the bottom of the list, the best part of this plan is we now know how addictive sugar is ! In fact I could hold my sugar back one day in future as a ransom for their nukes. Hear that Russia, no nukes or no sugar! lol if only I wasn't already retired !

If you have a Russian background or become a Russian citizen, I think you can still get a free hectare of land in the far East (Arctic) under their homestead legislation.

You have to be joking. Russia and other nearby Slavic nations eat more carbs than you can imagine. It’s obscene how much carbs they consume. Pierogies, babka, and potato pancakes anyone? Yikes! 😳

I see people still believe in old stereotypes about Russia and vodka. But hey we are number 56 in the world rating of the alcohol consumption. Not good, but 55 countries ahead us! Are they all dying young? No! Our lives are short because of stress and people don't like to go the doctors, they buy antibiotics in the farmacy and treat themselves. They go to the doctor only if it's Really BAD! I didn't find the comment about bears are the reason of short lives, but it follows the narrative 😂😂

You basically described a life style and nutrition of people that live in Eastern Europe and Baltic countries (Poland, Ukraine, Slovakia, Check, Romania etc). The difrence between Russia and Eastern Europe is that Russians have low life span because of powerty, low access to health care, poor social net, alcoholism, crime, drug use and wars.

No offense, but you just don’t know what’re you talking about. There are a lot less poor homeless people in Russia, than in America or Europe. There’s a a free medicine for everyone as well as high quality paid medicine. All major cities in Russia are extremely safe and much safer than most USA cities. Crime rate is low. Alcohol consumption in Europe is a lot worse, etc. Most negative facts about Russia are just propaganda and straight lies. I’m not saying it’s an ideal country, but it’s a lot better than most people think.

Pickles aren’t necessarily cooked. I make home made pickles with just vinegar and spices. Takes a week in the fridge, and tastes great. Super crunchy.

@@snowbird6855 Yes. I do fermented foods as well. But never at the same time. But the vinegar does have benefits. Slows carb uptake and helps blood sugar. And helps betahydroxybutarate produce short chain fatty acids.
