The Best Lube for Your Brakes

In this video, I show you why 3M’s car care lubrication products are so good, and how to use them. Considering I’m pushing their products so much, 3M should send me some products ;)
Anyways these products are the best brake lubes I’ve used, they can withstand high heat, and are corrosion resistant. If you want to keep two metals from rusting and fusing together, you want to use 3M’s copper antiseize, where you can use the Silicone Paste wherever there is rubber or plastics, as it won’t corrode or deteriorate it.
Products in Video 🔨
3M Silicone Paste ▶︎ amzn.to/2deCFup
3M Copper Antiseize ▶︎ amzn.to/2PDVE2Z
If you have any questions regarding the video, you know where to throw them!! Thanks for watching :)

The “general rule” is to use anti-seize” when joining 2 or more assemblies that are static; I.e. they don’t move relative to each other like a nut and bolt. . Grease is used when joining assemblies that are dynamic; i.e they move relative to each other like ball bearings mounted in a race. So, use grease on the caliper pins AND use grease on the “ears” & back of the brake pads & the guides. Anti seize “could” be used on the bolts that secure the caliper to the pins since those 2 assemblies are “static” relative to each other. Something I recall from many years ago from a Mechanical Engineering course.

I used permatex brake grease i used color violet to lubricate the back of the brake pads and the ears of the brake pads aswell and also the brake shims and for my guide pins i used the permatex color green grease because i used versachem brake grease before but I see it tthat grease is not good it cause my rubber bushings to swollen that's why I used those permatex brake grease

You should definitely NOT be using anti seize on bolts that secure the caliper. They often come with thread locker from the factory, so if anything put a bit of the blue one so they don't come loose from vibration.
@mattp4079
@mattp4079 Год назад
In any area prone to snow, ice road salt and brine, use anti seize on every nut and bolt, even lug nut s. Vibration loosening is a myth.
@paulg3316
@paulg3316 Год назад
@@mattp4079 That’s been my experience also - I’ve seen grease or anti seize used with little or no loosening of fasteners. However if anti seize or “regular” grease is applied to wheel lug studs it reduces the friction when the lug nuts are installed & it changes the recommended torque. It’s possible to “over stress” the fastener where it may affect its yield strength - but again, I’ve never seen this occur.

Young man, you explained very well how to use those two products. I bought 4 types of product two of these 3M and two lubricant in small tubes, but I don't know what is what to use on. I'm not a mechanic and try to replace the break pads for the first time. I watched several video and one guy use silicone on every thing, so I don't trust him and the other guy is new like me and he tried to explain in the video, but he is not sure himself too. So, again don't trust this guy. I found your video and now I know what I'm doing. Thank you, mate.

@milanmastracci thanks for sharing your knowledge. Does the type of grease you use also depend on the specific material used for the brake system parts? Or is it pretty universal that you can use copper for metal on metal and silicone for rubber on metal. Could I also generally just use aluminum based grease (I have a tube from permatex)?

you don't really need to put little screws back on,they only use it on assembly line to keep it in place,while the car moving forward in different section of assembly line ,the rotor is actually hold on in place by lug nut,it is not a safety matter at all ,for those who are wondering,why it is there

I don't usually respond to RU-vid videos but I'll just put in my two cents well he did do a very good job at explaining things the one thing he did do wrong however was installed the outer pad wrong those two metal tabs that you see on the actual back of the brake pad are meant to actually go in the caliper side to meet the two pins on the inside of the piston he also didn't use any brake clean on the actual brake rotors nor did he clean the back of the actual piston other than that a very well made video

Lubrication is a good practice, but there were a few things ignored here: wash the rotor with brake cleaner (might be also 3M) - it is covered in anti-corrosive oil. Inner break pad was not worn, neither was the rotor - there is a problem with breaking forces distribution. It breakes with 1/4 surface/force. Without fixing this problem, you will very likely destroy the new set of break disks and pads as well. You could have cleaned and lubricated the wheel hub (instead of inner rotor). It is important to be clean and flat.

See a lot of RU-vid mechanics here. Having worked at a dealership, been working on cars at home for years and done a lot of brakeservices, I can say he did everything very well! Would also recommend cleaning off the hub and applying new antisieze, cleaning off the piston as well as possible and using brake clean on the rotors. For those of you saying he should not use grease/anti-sieze on the inside of the rotor, you must be thinking of brake drums. In this video, there is no brake drum, and if you don't know the difference, and don't know what the friction surfaces are, you should NOT be performing work on the brakes of your car.

Anti seize is widely used on brakes, HOWEVER it is NOT grease! Grease is what the engineers of most cars recommend. If you don’t believe me look at your repair manual. BMW recommends very little in the way of any grease if I recall. So they vary, but most say to utilize grease and if you understand lubrication, there is a distinct and measurable difference between a grease and anti seize.

It’s not as bad rotor, it’s poor contact from the pads due to caliper biasing issues. Discs edges will only corrode and the friction surface will be lipped if the pads were seated correctly and able to move within the caliper for even coverage across the surface. Secondly, should’ve cleaned the hub with wire wheel/brush to remove existing corrosion/rust. Same as the caliper bracket and actual caliper piston/pot, generally on any contact area of pads or shims.

Rotor is coated with Copper Antiseize? It might be causing more problems when the copper runs all over the rotors and brakes. How did the rotors get so pitted? Salt baths? Washing off the salt might help. Looks like the brakes sat for long periods with salt to get that pitted? The rotors should have a smooth shiny surface if working properly.

You're should've used Sil-Glyde for the guide pins, thats why one pad was worn down and the other still had brake pad material left on it. 3M's silicone paste isn't really designed for brake pins hence why the pin was stuck and caused uneven pad wear.

Hey Milan! On my CR-V, I noticed if it is in Park for awhile and then I go for a drive, if I pull forward then shift into reverse, drive just a little bit and hit the brakes, it makes a "metal on metal" click sound (As Honda calls it). I took it to the dealer and they looked at it and heard the noise, they told me it is called "brake shift" and that is to adjust for heat expansion and that this was normal. Are they full of shit or is this just a normal characteristic of a Honda vehicle? It will only do this once and when I'm changing directions.
@milanmastracci
@milanmastracci 8 лет назад
+Jordan F I'm not sure what that brake shift is. What it might be is the emergency brake. I know that the emergency brake tightens and adjusts when you drive in reverse and apply the brakes. So it could be that they are adjusting, or it could be something else. Have you brakes been serviced recently?
@Jordan-nj2ve
@Jordan-nj2ve 8 лет назад
+milanmastracci Yeah I took it to the Honda dealer and they say they looked at everything and it was fine. They gave me a paper that had the following description on it and why this is "normal". "From what you are describing, this is normal. A loud "brake click" is a normal characteristic when changing direction after letting the vehicle sit for awhile due to the design of the caliper. The front brake calipers have a small amount of clearance between the shims and the pads which allow for expansion when the brakes heat up. You can verify that this is the case by cutting up business cards and wedging them in between the pad and the caliper bracket. The noise should go away." Have you ever heard of this before?

*Just one really important thing !.....if your vehicle has an A.B.S or E.P.S system the DO NOT use COPPER or metallic grease as it will interfere or damage the system ...always use NON-METALLIC grease instead* 👍

What's so special about 3m? Is this sponsored? The autozone silicone and anti sieze paste works fine too

+Tech Stuff I wish it was, but no this video is not sponsored by them. I've used both of their products and I love both of them. It would be selfish of me to hold that information to myself.

Tech Stuff It’s a silicone based lubricant. There are many others like it on the market. Super Lube comes to mind. All of them work when used properly.

it comes from the same petro chemical refinery but the 3M brand has an additional marketing and patent lawyers budget built into its cost... 99% same goop 🙂

@@glasser2819 This prosuct is filled with copper. You'll find the permatex anti-seize is metal filled as well but it's a bit thin for brakes imho. Works great for plugs and steel bolts though.
