In this video, we’re going to go over two cases of people who disappeared in the remote wilderness. But strangely, each of these people was skilled and experienced enough for this not to have happened, and yet it did anyway. Sometimes, these things just happen deep in the woods. This is video 8 in the creepiest disappearances series.

A major reason why alcoholics die more often from hypothermia is not just because of passing out while exposed to the elements. Alcohol causes your skin vessels to dilate and bring more blood to the surface, hence the flush and feeling of warmth. However, this puts your blood at closer exposure to cold air, and actually cools you down faster. Alcohol was an old soldier's 'cure' for the cold, but while it made you feel better, it made your condition worse.

my two cents: the first story sounds like the dude had a medical emergency and got scavenged post-mortem. the second story sounds like poachers with a very troubled friend who probably succumbed to the elements while going through alcohol withdrawal. the fact that a number of aaron's loved ones had already severed ties with him would make it plausible that the guys on the hunting trip with him were also close to their breaking point, so their weird lack of concern for his safety also kind of makes sense?

I'll add my two cents too on the first story. My brother was a bush pilot in Alaska and had numerous encounters with brown bears. On one occasion he spotted a sow and her cubs headed for him but fortunately she just ran on past. It caused him to run to his helicopter to get his gun. There is another danger also and that's moose. During rut male bulls can be aggressive. The point to all this is when venturing into the bush be on your toes. I would tend to believe a bear attack might have been the culprit. There aren't many attacks but they do happen.
@SILSAL67
@SILSAL67 5 месяцев назад
First guy....there was no proof of bear consumption even if he had a medical emergency. All the scat found carried no clothing bits which it should have and some of his clothes were whole with no scratches or signs of a bear attack. Also, his extra, stored food was intact, which would not have been the case if a bear had come into his camp.
@ravenofroses
@ravenofroses 5 месяцев назад
@@jbaker7311 i'd have said bear attack, too, but the scene was super clean for a bear attack. tbh if he was killed by any animal, a moose would make more sense in this specific scenario. but yeah, going alone into such isolated wilderness for weeks at a time is a serious risk on a good day. it's tragic and mysterious but not exactly shocking that this guy didn't make it out.

Yup. Dude had stripped out of his clothes to wash up in the lake, hasn't taken his mask off yet and got jumped by a grizzly. And just to reinforce this point, Timothy "Grizzly Man" Treadwell had filmed, studied, and lived among bears for 13 summers before one decided to eat him. One expert's response was the opposite of disbelief: "It's a tragic thing, but it's not unpredictable."

I understand the family being in denial in the first story, but tbh him having experience with bears is pretty irrelevant to whether he could survive a bear attack or not. People have been attacked and killed by wild animals that they’ve personally worked with for years. Yeah, alcohol withdrawal during severe alcohol use disorder is often deadly. It is actually recommended that people addicted to alcohol don’t stop drinking until they enter a hospital or rehab because they must be medically monitored and usually prescribed at least one sedative medication to overcome withdrawal symptoms. Otherwise, it can easily result in deadly seizures. Many, if not most, people experience minor seizures during alcohol withdrawal of lesser severity unless medically monitored. For the second story, I think that the surviving two were hunting on private property and that's why they were so cagey about the investigations. I also think there's a chance Aaron was suicidal, but that's just where my mind went when it was stated he brought less alcohol than he usually did. I bet his friends spent a few days panicking bc they didn't know whether to turn themselves in as violating hunting laws or wait for their friend to show up again. I doubt they actually killed him but I am certain they were doing something illegal up there in the mountains.

Any one that hunts breaks rules/laws knowingly and unknowingly. Handbook can get so complex it’s hard to dot every I and cross every T. Imo they were obviously all on land they didn’t have permission to hunt, but you would think once the law is involved and a guy is missing the jigs up and you would just come clean. At a certain point the webs too deep and you cut your losses (like the elk carcass being found)

A lot of times we talk about multiple theories as if they are all mutually exclusive. I don't know if that's intentional or not, but it's always possible that more than one theory is true at once. Aaron, Keith, and Brandon could have been poachers AND Aaron could have wandered off to suffer on his own, AND as a top comment pointed out, it could have been a planned suicide that his friends knew about. Multiple things can be true at once, and it would explain a lot. Maybe he didn't tell them until they were already out there. Maybe they were also poaching, which gave him a lot of leverage to disappear. Also, it's possible any plans of suicide weren't strictly "I plan to kill myself" but "I plan to allow myself to die, and if I don't I don't." or he told his friends he might change his mind. Either way, he would send them that message on the 9th to pacify them before he died. Suicidal ideantions aren't always "I plan to kill myself," it can be recklessly endangering yourself, sabotaging your own survival, basically trying to get yourself killed. "I don't want to live... but I don't want to commit suicide... so I'm just going to make a bunch of poor decisions and if I die I die..."

I concur that there are probably many coinciding reasons for this outcome. It could be that his behavior was becoming more and more hostile or unbearable and his friends left him behind or left him to die or something like that, because they were just absolutely fed up with him. But maybe he was acting that way partially to create some distance. Either way it's clear there was more involvement. But I don't know, is it more respectful to Aaron to not push the issue if it's what he wanted, or is it more respectful to his family to uncover the truth? He's dead but his family's not. I think living people should matter more than the dead in that regard.

Because I watch videos like this, I was nervous for her because she mentioned she’s never hiked and doesn’t really like it but was willing to go and even let her boyfriend get adventurous during the hike if he wanted to (as in explore areas he wasn’t familiar with cause he has experience). I told her and drilled it into her everyday until she left for the trip to please get offline maps. She did, downloaded a few. She comes back from her trip and says “hey, guess what…we actually got lost cause we went off trail, lost signal, and couldn’t use anything else but the offline maps you recommended. I've heard Aaron's story so many times. As an alcoholic in recovery I can't help but wonder if Aaron's actions, along with the two others, were on account of Aaron purposely letting his two friends know it would be his last trip. Alcohol withdraw is one of the worst feelings and you sincerely feel like you wish to die at times. Aaron may have been sensing his time was up and he didn't want to face the aftermath of running out of alcohol so he may have planned his own suicide only telling his friends since he probably realized he needed to tell at least someone other than his spouse. This would explain why he was so insistent despite his wife's pleas.
@Steampunkkids
@Steampunkkids 5 месяцев назад
This is a really insightful explanation of the events. Your theory also explains his friends’ actions and their attitude. If he did die “from the elements” his bones could be buried in a cemetery, and his wife could collect life insurance. If he committed suicide, it would tarnish his reputation. His church may not allow him to be buried near his loved ones. And, his death would not qualify his wife to receive life insurance. His friends, understanding all this, would have wanted him to go out on his own terms. Your theory explains it all! I’m sorry you are going through recovery right now. It’s not easy. We were looking for a hunting buddies cow elk, but I stayed out too long and darkness descended. I walked the wrong trail for several miles before turning back, but it was too late. Ironically I saw 4 cow elk, but wasn't interested anymore, I just wanted to get back to the truck. I was on the wrong trail so I turned around knowing that the truck had to be over a big ridge. Great research on both stories. In particular, the second one involving the hunters. I don't live far from from there, so what I'm going to say will be limited because some local people out here are..weird. One thing to keep in mind is that the Crazy Mountains is known as an island mountain range. It's predominantly surrounded by private property, while the mountain is publicly owned (Forest Service land). It's easier to access these days from what I understand, but back then, you practically had to trespass in order to get into the forest service property. Trails plainly noted as being public access on forest service maps would be marked off as private property when you were on them, and some have been charged with trespassing. Some of these private property owners were ready to charge hikers at a drop of the hat. Throw poaching into the mix, and I can't imagine what those guys were thinking.

Yeah, one never knows what you might run into in the backwoods of Montana. One time my ex and I tried to take a different route through some mountains between a cabin I own and the town where we live. The route was clearly marked on our map as being a Forest Service road, but at a certain point it was blocked with a gate and the people who lived there swore it was private property. They had it blocked off and I'm not sure what their deal was, but I've lived in the rural west long enough to know it's a bad idea to tangle with folks who live that far off the beaten path. You just don't know if they might be survivalists, cultists, or just plain crazy. We turned around, even though it was *at least* 20 miles on back roads and probably cost us two hours.

What I like to point out... it is always, invariably "an experienced" hiker/hunter/camper who runs into trouble. I don't think I've ever heard one of these stories begin with "XYZ was a novice hiker..." What that tells me is that the person grew complacent. Hubris in the wild is a bad idea - the wild will always be wild and you cannot tame it, merely manage it. Sometimes. And sometimes your camping partners just kill you.

It ain't always gonna be some amazing banger, but it is always going to be real, actual stories of people. Many cone here to watch the high amount of detail, to listen and theory craft or to wonder about the how's and why's. I like hearing these stories because they tell me things that can and will happen if I'm unprepared, that as unlikely as a random unprovoked (intentionally or not) bear attack is.. they still happen. People disappear, cops across the world fumble cases, sometimes they couldn't do anything, other times they are seemingly corrupt and its not so cut and dry. This channel is real, and sometimes that means more boring or straight forward. They can't all be crazy cave or diving disasters with 15 pages of details. Sometimes it's as dark and simple as someone breaking their ankle and them dying within a mile of the trail head.

Bear attack: (i) the fact that he worked around grizzlies means he was desensitized to the danger just like Timothy Treadwell. This could make him MORE likely to suffer an attack. (ii) there's no one-single-way attacks happen. They tell you to play dead because sometimes bears walk away without eating the human after they are dead. (iii) he might have wounded the bears, ay, with a large knife during the attack and then the man crawled away and died.

In the second story, as soon as I heard the description of the guy and about how his "demeanour was off", it immediately reminded me of one of my friends who has issues with drink. And as the story went on it sounded more and more like him, especially the bit about him arriving to the campsite drunk. We've often went camping with this friend in the past, and he would often have arrived drunk like this, and be incoherent annoying, and maybe even a bit confrontational, so I can 100% imagine how their first few hours played out, with a lot of tension between the men, with a clear separation between them and him, and them almost being glad that he went off on his own, but also being worried about him.

Not just the north. The coastal mountains in bc are incredibly rugged and remote. You go into the mountains on the north shore of Vancouver. Cell service is gone after a few km. The next dirt road to the north is 100 km away. European hikers get a surprise, when there isn’t a restaurant on top of the mountain. I have seen nine bears this year, and I’m not out that much.

I really feel for North Shore Rescue. The coastal mountain hikes on the north shore aren't as technical as some in the Rockies or Kootenays of this province. But I have never seen as many unprepared, under-geared hikers as I have on the coast. Walking up in yoga pants and skater shoes, no pack, no map, no water. Not even a jacket. People see the city in the distance and get lulled into a false sense of security. I think they forget that they are actually in the wilderness. The numbers of naiive tourist hikers and snowboarders/skiers they have to pluck off the mountains are on a whole other level.

I think they were almost caught and split up to hide from being caught. Aaron laid low but because of the alcoholism and high risk for hypothermia coupled with medication he died where he was hiding. Hypothermia can set in real quick and kill you if you don't pay attention to the signs. Look at all the cave stories on here. Cold dripping water on a person stuck on a ledge in a cave was enough to cause hypothermia in one case.

Feels much more like the sort of thing you would ask after hurting your friend badly in a fight and seeing him hobble in the direction of home. It's troubling how law enforcement mishandled the investigation. Aaron's cabin should have been secured immediately with permission to search obtained from Aaron's wife prior to Keith and Brandon's return. Also, they had enough reasonable suspicion to subpoena Keith and Brandon's cell phones. Because of these mistakes we'll likely never know the entire truth until the statute of limitations expire for the hunting poaching crimes these men likely committed. Well if you know no murder was committed you may not be so worried about the suspicion, they can suspect all they like but no evidence will exist. Risks here: A) They may suspect you murdered someone and nothing happens, vs B) they believe you didnt commit murder but now have evidence you committed another crime

Story one, what if he got a head injury, and dazed, accidentally wandered into the water and was swept away? It could be something as random as a tree branch falling on his head. He might think that to get help he needed to get his little raft and then go downstream, and not thinking or even seeing clearly simply falls in and is washed away. Head injuries effect thinking and vision, and at the very first while adrenaline in pumping you are doing slightly better but when it wears off...

Being a hunter does not automatically mean you don't love animals. For instance, you could have a fascination with animals and love the outdoors, which would metaphorically be referred to as "falling in love with". Another thing to consider about hunters is, some of them make proper use of their kills and eat the animal/use the pelt, instead of just treating them as trophies, which does show respect, and that they take the business of hunting, and the animals seriously. Also metaphorically, "love".

The last story reminded me so much of my early 20s. I was an alcoholic who appeared pretty functional. But I was also struggling with depression. I would just make really dangerous decisions, not wanting to actively kill myself, but putting myself in situations where someone or something else might. I think a lot of people also don't realize how bad the comedown is. If you've been on a big bender for a few days then stop drinking you are genuinely incapacitated. I think there is a good chance that Aaron made some reckless choices to put himself at risk, then got hit by the comedown, so he couldn't self rescue, then died of exposure. There is also a chance that he was just poaching on private land and was murdered by the land owner.

I live about 60 miles from the Crazies and have read quite a bit on the case. Using descriptions from a few sources, Aaron's remains were found on open ground only 1.1 miles north of the Sweet Grass dude ranch buildings, and his boots only 4 miles west up the same rugged and heavily forested canyon the ranch is in. Oddly enough, his backpack was found about six tenths of a mile north of his remains, as if he had walked out of the mountains, then abandoned his pack, turned around, and headed back up. About 2.4 miles down the canyon from where his boots were found is an abandoned farmstead where he could have sought refuge from the elements. About 150 yards up the small hill from where his boots were, some of the buildings would have probably been visible, weather permitting.

I think it was a bit of everything when it came to Arons death, he and his friends could very well have been poaching(maybe on accident or maybe on purpose), he was drinking or could have ran out by then. Someone suggests they split up and hunt; Aron agreed and then when he was alone he may have fallen asleep or maybe even passed out and froze. it would also explain why he was found on a hill line overlooking someone else's ranch/homestead. Whatever happened hope him and the others rest in peace.

I had a call with Sean this morning, and I asked him point blank if he's ever going to pack it in and stop just killing the mystery game - and he point blank said no. He's just too good at this and doesn't ever plan on stopping until he's uncovered and explained all the mysteries that are out there. Good on ya man. You know how it is

Admitting to poaching seems like it would be a lot better than being suspected of foul play. But I guess authorities must not have had enough evidence to get warrants for their phones, so…🤷🏻‍♂️ Just the way his belongings and remains were found seems much more likely Aaron wasn’t in his right mind, and may have been trying to find himself out there and deal with his alcohol issue away from his friends and family.

Just goes to show that no matter how prepared, trained, or smart someone is there are things that happen where none of that matters! Being alone might be great but isn’t always wise !

actually, statistically, if there's anyone unlikely to get eaten by a bear, it's someone who doesn't go anywhere near bears.

You should do one video on the disappearance of Bruno Muschalik, a Polish student. Bruno disappeared in August 2015 in Manali, India. His parents have been desperately trying to find him, with no luck.
