@cantthinkofaname5046 29 дней назад
True, but i think since Coraline is older we need to accept it isn’t the standard anymore, it probably would be a higher rating today. The FNAF movie, a movie about straight up child murder from a horror franchise, needed to be allowed to go harder
@speaknoevil9197
@speaknoevil9197 29 дней назад
@cantthinkofaname5046 That is a legitimate possibility. This is gonna be a wild comparison, ik, but other PG horror movies that would've had their rating upped (if released today) are classics like Beetlejuice (and in the case of the movie Gremlins, that one WAS re-rated to a PG-13). Same deal with Coraline, what was PG over a decade ago might be too hardcore and would've been slapped with a PG-13. And, dare I say, there are probably some PG-13 horror movies that either teeter on an R or would've been full on R. But the issue isn't just the PG-13 rating, it's that they never once utilized that rating to its full extent. Most likely because if they pushed the envelope, it probably could have been unfairly slapped with an R. (Cause the MPAA notoriously despises horror movies.) So instead of taking risks, genuine risks, they pusssied into this awful middle ground that impresses nobody.

Fnaf, the video game still legitimately frightens me in some weird primal way. I’m pretty disappointed that the movie wasn’t even remotely scary. The fact we got him saying that which doesn't even make sense in context yet we didn't get Afton's best line to date: John (or Mike in the movie's context idk): "And what makes you think they won't kill you?" Afton: "Because I am one of them." Seeing Matthew Lillard saying something like that would've went hard. People honestly overreacted with critics, let's be real. Yes, critics may be unfair most of the time, but audiences give Wish a 85% despite getting bad reviews. Critics may have give bad movies high scores, but that dosen't mean audiences are completly flawless. The critics didn't give the movie you like a 90% or higher? Big deal. But you then realized that you found some flaws (A couple plot holes, rushed pacing, some characters weren't giving enough spot light, etc). It's nice that we're getting video game movies that are faithful to the games, but the live-action Barbie movie told me that flim adaptions need more then just references to be good.

That’s part of the reason why I’m conflicted on it being as big of a financial success that it was. On one hand I’m glad that the FNAF film was so successful because then that means more people will be exposed to it and the franchise can expand. However, on the other hand the fact that it did so well while having this many flaws could lead to the very real possibility that in the sequel, the filmmakers will either keep or double down on the aspects that don’t make this franchise scary. @worthybutter2004 I agree with this so much because one of the biggest problems I had is how they took away the autonomy of the animatronics. The way they tried to lessen the severity of their actions by saying "William Afton is controlling them" was weird and not explained very well either. Isn't one of the biggest horror aspects of the first game is that these animals can clearly move and think for themselves when you know they shouldn't? They're way more deceptive and unpredictable than they appear. And like you said, even if they're children, they're still commiting some pretty horrific murders. This could've been a way more interesting aspect of the film to explore.

Thinking about it, Mike telling the police about Freddy Fazbear's and what happened to willaim would've been the perfect lead in for a sequel. Have it cold open on a group of officers going into the ruins of the pizza place, slowly getting killed one-by-one by the withered animatronics and springtrap (or maybe exclusively springtrap to make him feel like more of a threat), with the final kill hard-cutting to the title.

I definitely like your idea of Mike finding out about why Freddy’s closed via an old newspaper, and it works well with the games as well. The first semblance of lore we got from it was from the random newspaper clipping what would something’s show up on camera. Speaking of, I kind of wish the played more into that as well. Sure there is that one glimpse of “It’s Me” and all but take it further. Have it so that some stuff changes playing with Mikes mind. Some posters show up randomly, the employee of the month pictures are changed out to the kids he sees in his dreams, etc. Overall though I do think the film we got was fine and it’s a great starting point, though I do hope they take the critiques and implement them in the sequels.

@@Vikumax I mean Fnaf is fnaf, it's a huge pop culture icon. Not to mention how the movie had a big marketing campaign and hype for years. Rachet isn't a bad or super niche franchise, but it just doesn't have the same culture significance as FNAF, especially when it's movie came out. Sonic movie made a ton of money too but that was because of how infamous it was, and that gave it a big marketing boom when the redesign was shown off. And what of the actual movie? It's Alvin and the Chipmunks with vague allusions to the Sonic series and that's it.

it feels so, so SO great to hear your thoughts on this movie because it's EXACTLY how i felt watching this movie when it came out. it was such a disappointment to see them take such a tame, lame approach to a genuinely terrifying concept, and make it so dull and unappealing it's just comedic, so far away removed to what it actually made the first game so scary in the first place and make a mockery out of it. i've loved this franchise for years and grew up with it, despite not being a fan of the later entries. so seeing the movie weve waited years for be such a letdown was so disheartening and frustrating. seeing you share the exact same thoughts i had while watching just feels so cathartic as weird as that sounds, and more people should really know to praise something when it really TRULY deserves it. this doesn't. not everything is negative but most of it is. at the end of the day, it's just a silly movie, there are more important things to worry about, but the impact this franchise made on my life isn't to be glossed over. it means a lot to hear someone agree and actually criticize the movie for what it is. hoping the next movie is actually good, but i am not holding my breath knowing how much of a disappointment this first one was.

@ExtraQuestionableContent
@ExtraQuestionableContent 29 дней назад
I think a good direction for her character in the sequel is a sort of internal redemption arc. While in a coma she experiences flashbacks of herself and William Afton in his prime during the peak of Freddy's (which would give us some lovely Matthew Lillard screentime) and show us how she was a culprit in his crimes, but most importantly their relationship. I always thought it would be way creepier if Vanessa wasn't Afton's biological daughter but he just stole her from a young age and manipulated her, maybe with the promise (and lie) that he knows about the supernatural and can bring back one of her deceased loved ones or something, because bro's a weirdo, but either way we definitely need an expansion on their relationship, and an expansion on Afton in general because he is barebones in the movie if you ask me. Unfortunately I don't think we're going to get that. I think Vanessa will be out of her coma immediately in the second film, they explore the second location, Springtrap pops up out of nowhere, and they defeat him in five minutes like the first film. Then the cycle repeats for the third film.

I feel like one of the things that worked really well in the game that they didn't really do in the movie was the basic horror of noticing something inanimate has moved without seeing it move, there's a sort of self gaslighting sense of doubt that makes anyone go "I'm imagining things, that can't have moved"
@Katyamuffin
@Katyamuffin 29 дней назад
Exactly, that's what made the first game scary. You look away, then look back and they're somewhere else, which implies that A. They know when you're watching them And B. They know they're not supposed to be seen moving It gives them juuuust enough sentience and agency without revealing too much.
@ExtraQuestionableContent
@ExtraQuestionableContent 29 дней назад
I agree, it gave the first game a sort of weeping angel effect, especially if you go in as blind as possible and aren't sure how the animatronics can move and how tiny the differences could be. Also how the shadows obscured the characters in a lot of the camera angles in the first game made it really hard to tell what or who you were looking at.

I think the only part of this movie that made me giddy as a FNAF fan was seeing how good the animatronics themselves actually look, as well as how nice the set is for the pizzeria, and seeing William Afton’s death translated into live action, along with the bit at the end where he’s dying in the back room. Other than that, in my opinion, I find it bad yet enjoyable as a fan of the series.
@JManerProductions
@JManerProductions 29 дней назад
I really like that last piece of advice. Is something recent that was mentioned with other adaptations: they point out the absurdity or silliness of some of the elements of the source material as a way to tell the audience "we know, just go with it": I think the One Piece live-action adaption managed to avoid that issue. They were not afraid to take themselves seriously, which can really help the audience to be more invested about that world. Thankfully they didn't make the mistake to break the illusion by saying "This is not how it works in the real world, snails can't talk and it's weird, but ignore we said that to you and enjoy anyway".

I'm a FNAF fan but I wanted a movie that could stand well on its own and be somewhat timeless. I feel like steering away from a darker tone to accommodate for more general audiences was a bit detrimental. The movie isn't a horror movie. But it had all the right ingredients to be. Focusing more on the kids and what happened in the 80s would have worked really well. Anyways, maybe each movie could open with a different death and the next one could be the bite of 87.

I think with more and more live action adaptations coming out now, it seems like a generally vague rule that they can be faithful but up to a certain degree. It's like finding a nice freshly paved road then noticing that there are large pieces of the road taken out, then the remaining ends are smushed together. They just drop so incredibly nonchalantly "oh yeah they're haunted by dead kids btw" halfway through. Not to mention springtrap showing up in the very first movie to begin with. If this is setting up his return in the third, then i'm not really going to care since he was introduced so late and dispatched so easily

i can’t believe it took you pointing it out for me to realize that there really is no mention or suggestion of the Bite of 87, or any Bite event in general. the closest suggestion is probably Max’s death showing how deadly the animatronic’s can be. it’s still REALLY odd there was no mention of it given how that was the big Mystery Lore of the first game, it was one of the things about the game that had everybody making theories and trying to figure out the story at all. to not have arguably a vital part of what made FNAF become popular at all in the movie is strange. i went into the movie assuming that Scott was using it as his chance to redo the FNAF story overall, looking at the games now it’s very easy to see that he had no solid idea of what story he wanted to tell at the beginning, so i was down with whatever would happen. it was interesting to see what parts of the story he used, it’s not my place to consider the movie the ‘true canon telling of the story’ but i think considering the mess that is the FNAF games timeline, the movies will have a much more definitive and easy to understand timeline lmao edit: while i’m sad Mark didn’t appear in the movie i’m kind of glad he didn’t, mainly bcs i would have been personally mad at him getting killed off at the very beginning when he’s the kING. This pretty much sums up my thoughts on the movie. The sets and animatronics look amazing, and everything, so a surface level, look pretty good, but it's so hilariously not scary and lame at times, that it really negates the scary atmosphere of the first game. I remember when the movie first came out, much like the Mario Movie, fans of the franchise were praising it to the high heavens, while most other viewers (even ones who were fans) didn't really care for it. Most people just thought it was good for the references and such, but then later came to realize that just having references don't make good movies. I thought the Mario Movie was great when I watched it in theaters, but now just think it's alright after having rewatched it a few times. I feel the same for the FNAF movie (though I haven't felt the need to rewatch it, cause it was just alright on my first viewing.) I hope Scott, and the whole crew, take notes from this film's reception, to make a genuinely good sequel!

22:16 If I had a nickel for every time I came across someone who didn't realize that Fnaf was a ghost story right from the jump, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice, right? seriously though, the whole "free roaming mode" thing was a red herring. what's the phone guy gonna tell you? that the robots are possessed by the ghosts of dead children? why would he know that? anyone's first assumption would be that it had something to do with the robot's programming, not that they're possessed. in the first game, you can hear haggard breathing coming from the animatronics, their heads move in rapid and unnatural ways even for a machine, you can hear laughter, humming, and garbled speech coming from them, they ignore the naked endoskeleton in the room with all the spare parts, they look directly at you through the cameras, and news clippings will randomly appear on the walls which explain the missing children incident. That has _always_ been a part of the Fnaf lore, it has _always been_ a ghost story. even just the existence and mechanics of "Golden Freddy" suggest something supernatural; "free roaming mode" does not explain how Golden Freddy is able to do what it does in the first game. although, I actually enjoyed this review. this is just a minor detail that kinda irks me.

I know Matthew (actor of William Afton) signed for a trilogy, but to be honest? I don’t want him in the second movie. Definitely the third but I feel like the second movie should be based around the second location. Maybe throw in a couple mentions of Garret but I want Michael to try and move on a bit with his life in the second movie now that he knows who did it to his brother. centre the second movie around the toy animatronics and make it so the withers perhaps lost their memories due to being damaged to make it actually scary. Michael trying to survive all those nights without being killed by several animatronics whilst trying to wind up the music box and have the last night them all attacking him at once as well as the puppet. Maybe throw in a plot twist to do with the puppet being related to Garret in some way. Maybe just have William Afton be in a couple of flashbacks whilst Vanessa also tries to move forward with her life after recovering with Michael. In the third movie have William finally return as spring trap and base it around maybe Michael and Vanessa finding out he’s alive in an end credit scene of the second movie. Then the third movie can be them trying to find ways to get rid of Afton for good but they need to give the kids their happiest day before being allowed to destroy the place for good to end the cycle of animatronics not being able to move on. Anyways that was just my take.

Okay as someone who's still with the franchise and saw the ENTIRE journey of this series, I knew this movie wasn't gonna be a proper horror film. There are a couple of factors as to why, but the BIGGEST reason is because now Five Nights at Freddy's is played for younger kids' audience nowadays, when in reality, it wasn't at first. The first 4 games nailed the horror feel and the scary atmosphere to their environments and characters... but then we got FNAF WORLD, a cutesy version of those characters... then we got Sister Location, where that was the start of the more sci-fi elements of the franchise, then with games like Pizza Simulator, Help Wanted, Security Breach, those games kinda sucked out what was left of the horror aspect of the series. That's kinda why I really like Ruin and Help Wanted 2, because while yes, they still have the sci-fi elements, they managed to bring back the horror that's been sorely missing from the games. And this is coming from a guy who LOVED the movie. Like by the end, I thought to myself " could've been more terrifying, but hey, I'm just glad a Five Nights at Freddy's movie finally exists." I keep hearing that the sequel will focus more on being a proper horror movie, and while I doubt they'll go the full on horror, it would be nice to see this series fully go back to its horror roots.

Coraline and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark are both PG-13 horror films that dont look down on their audiences and actually build up suspence and tone with their sense of terror. If FNAF had a more clear sense of what it wanted to be, it could've had that same sense of stakes whilst being suitable for the franchise's child audience. Fan service should be a fun addition to a film, not a replacement for a solid story.

My review of the FNAF movie as a long time fan: The film was made for fans. Not a bad thing on paper, but the problem is that A. the FNAF fanbase is incredibly varied in types of people and B. all of those people want different things from the movie. So instead of picking a niche of the fanbase and building the movie around it, the movie tries to appeal to everyone. EVERYONE. So it wants to be a gritty drama with emotional beats but also a goofy Ghostbusters popcorn flick, and it doesn't balance those things well at all. I think Scott genuinely doesn't know why the first few games worked or that people liked them. In fact, he confirmed this in the movie's production notes. He said something along the lines of "I don't know why people liked my games so much, but I'm gonna try not to let them down!" This is because Scott has also said he isn't a horror fan, and never really has been. Recipe for disaster, as he doesn't try to root out why people like the franchise so much and instead goes wit the most basic thing he knows the fanbase likes. "William Afton? Yeah, put him in, doesn't matter where, so long as he gets namedropped the fans will love it. Narrative cohesion? Deeper themes? Unique cinematography? Artistic storytelling? One of my cinematographers literally saying in an interview he wants to base the camerawork off of The Shining with its amazing camerawork? Nope, don't need that. So long as there's enough fan service it'll hide the cracks that I wrote this movie's script all by myself and I don't know how to do that because I've never done that! Oh, and hiring another actually experienced screenwriter to work alongside? No way! Because only I can give the fans what they want, and no one else!" That's the only mindset I can think of that resulted in the movie we got. Why else would the movie have been in unnecessary production hell for so long? Also, I think its worthy to look at the directors lined up originally to work on this movie. Gil Kenan was the first I believe, (director of Monster House, City of Ember, and Poltergeist, basically movies that can be genuinely scary but are technically for kids) and I think he would've been more fit for the job, at least over Emma Tammi (no offense to her, I just don't see much uniqueness in her direction). That was when the movie was under Warner Brothers and Scott broke away when they "did something different." The movie could've possibly benefitted from "something different", but oh well. Next was Christopher Columbus. Obviously a talented director for the most part, but for a horror franchise? Why? He's never directed any kind of horror movie. I would've imagined it being similar to Night at the Museum if it was still directed by him, which honestly was a better night shift movie ngl. All in all this kind of shows me the red flags for a movie not focused on horror were kind of set up, I just didn't spot them, so that's probably on me. I just think it's a damn shame the movie didn't pick a lane but tried to do it all. I have more issues with the movie, but that's what it boils down to I think. I don't hate Scott, in fact I have a lot of respect for him and he's a creative guy, but he bit off more than he could chew with how much he inserted himself into the production of this movie. The longer I've been a fan of the franchise (nearly 10 years now lol) the more I realize Scott needs to chillax a bit with his tight grip on everything. One man can't run a multi-million dollar franchise efficiently, especially not one who didn't expect it. Not saying he should retire, just step into the back is all and put it in the hands of someone who both knows and cares about the franchise (like he said would.) Movie was a solid 4.5/10, maybe 5/10 because I appreciate the effort. Go watch the fan film Night Five on RU-vid instead, it ain't perfect but its far better script-wise and more faithful to the spirit of the original games, knowing what made them work.

Well the movie isn’t in the universe of the games and I don’t like comparing an official film to a fan film. It’s just unfair in my opinion.

@garrettmurphy2447 How is it an unfair comparison if I think what the fan film did (with a budget of I think like $20,000) was better story-wise than the official movie (with $25 million)? You act like the official movie was the underdog in that scenario, but it's the complete opposite from a resource perspective. And if you mean the fact that an official movie has constraints it must adhere to (like being PG-13) and an indie film doesn't that also doesn't apply because the fan film is basically PG-13 as well, with honestly maybe even less "gore". I'd get comparing a bad fan film to a good movie isnt fair, but this is the other way around. That just makes the official movie look worse imo. Also, Silver Eyes is in a different universe than the games but it is better than the movie as well. I don't hate the film because its different from the games, I hate it because it's different from the games and also doesn't know what it wants to be. But that's just me, and I'm glad for people who were able to enjoy the film entirely.

I think the movie woulda been better if they captured that creepy feeling when you see one of the animatronics in the camera just staring at you. The glowing red eyes was a mistake too, they should just have kept those dead eyes the animatronics have. Woulda made it way scarier

Yeah, the eyes they have in the movie look like they need some Clear Eyes for their dry eyes or are high AF ☠️

The fact you gotta spell this out to people to not get a bunch of hate comments is sad. People wanna be right or wrong more than they wanna actually engage with discussions.

It’s the double standard of if you’re making a positive review, you can insult the critics as much as you want, but if you’re making a negative review, people expect a ton of respect

At least for a pg-13 film it actually has really good gore. Most horror movies rely on disgusting or unrealistic gore scenes, imo I think it feels cheesy when horror movies do that but the fnaf movie actually surprised me.

I feel fnaf is not a horror franchise anymore. Scott started it as a gruesome horror game, then he saw how many kids watched and played his games and decided to make a 180 and change the direction completely, thats the reason i stopped caring about it, it seriously feels like a kids franchise instead of an actual creepy game with horrific lore.
@HallowzDev

Same, I don’t think it was Scott who changed the direction. Pretty sure security breach was the first game with that approach.

@@HallowzDev This movie is not close to being how the og games were, this is literally a children horror movie. Guess who directed this?
