The Grip - Baseball vs Overlap…

All variants of grips can hit good golf shots but we should take time to find what suits us best. Here is the basic difference in mechanics of the baseball (ten finger) and overlap (interlock) grips.
Let me help you get an effortless golfswing with speed and accuracy. I call it the circle of speed. A good release will help you to a better impact and longer drives and irons without slice and hook. How to swing a golf club need to be adjusted to your skill level and experience.
Long and straight is the goal for everyone but it takes time. Try to focus on one thing not everything when you practise. Impact, face control and swingpath will always be the most important part to drill. We focus too much on rotation but no good golf shot will be executed just by rotating.
I’m naturally right handed but all my tips works for both left handed and right handed golfers.
We also need to understand that many myths in golf are misleading. Everything that you find on the internet isn’t true. Ben Hogan, Sam Snead are two of legends that are often misunderstood.
We shall not keep our head still, only start with the hips, look only at the ball or keep the left or right arm straight.
If you use callaway, ping, titleist or taylor made clubs doesn’t matter you can learn to hit good golf shots. Your loft or your shaft on the club will not change but you can always get better.
Find what inspires you. Golf basics are the same for everyone. The pga tour, longdrivers or other good golfers can all help you find better golf shots. Watch what they do instead of listed to what they say. Listen mostly to your body and figure out what you need to do to produce the same results as the pros on TV. Be careful when you watch a golf swing in slow motion. The result isn't always what the golfer is trying to do. Feel and real are seldom the same.
Mike Malaska, Mike Austin, Mike Dunaway, Pete Cowen and Steve Pratt are some of my favorite golf instructors online. Find the tips that make your golf better. Decide what you want to hit. I teach a draw but many like a fade and nobody likes a hook or slice.
Your hips or your lag is not the key to golf. Your hands will decide the shot and you can do like Tiger Woods and trust your hands. Teach your hands to hit different shots. Hit big hooks and slices to understand what happens. Only straight is not gonna teach you anything.
Bryson Dechambeu and Kyle Birkshire can inspire you to hit it longer. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson can give you inspiration and motivation to test new things and new golf shots. Linn Grant, Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg can show you the future of golf.
The Masters, Players Championship, The Players, The Open and US Open can make you love golf even more. See the best in the world solve all the problems we all need to master any golf course. Golf is a craft and you need fantasy, feel and skills to master it.

The reason your instruction is the best out there is that you encourage people to experiment and actually learn for themselves what works best. Getting back into the game after 20 years off, I took a lesson and told the pro I used to use an interlocking grip but found now that it causes real pain in one of my pinkies, and that I hit it better with a baseball grip anyway. Before I'd even taken a swing, he said I'd need to go back to an interlock if I ever wanted to be really good. The lesson did not go well. Thanks for sharing, you're helping me learn how to get better.

We all need to be strong enough to say stop when something isn't working and find a solution. We all need to get the club to do the same thing but our thought and our body will do a unique swing, we need to find it.

I switched to baseball grip about a year ago and have been hitting bombs. I feel like I just have to remember to start them in the right position to set my wrists up for success at the top of my swing. I was worried that because so few tour players use this style that I would need to switch back at some point but your video helps me remember why I changed in the first place. Thanks!

I used interlocking grip for 40yrs, then developed some arthritis in hands. Pro suggested I try 10 finger grip as a practice drill for my tempo and squaring the club face. I hit the ball so consistently well with 10 finger grip that I have switched to it entirely. Better accuracy and consistently long shots. I won't go back.

I have recently switched to the 10 finger for the driver because I found it significantly improved my strike location on the face (almost felt I had better hand eye co-ordination) and accuracy. I agree with Marcus, my driver clubhead speed is down slightly but this is more than offset by pure strikes. Also a big fan of the split hand grip as a practice drill. Keep up the great work Marcus!

I just got back from the range this minute and I saw this video. I was swapping baseball with overlap as an exercise by coincidence. I could feel the contact better but lost maybe 20 yards. Also I released a little early and the flight was high. The overlap was better for distance as the release was a bit later (7 i). 2 things for me I add to your method is making sure my trail leg doesn't straighten at the top (terrible habit of mine) and starting the down swing with a little pull of the lead hip back, not a bump. Helps me to centre the strike I feel. Funny I came home to this great video 👍

Hi Marcus I have watched a few of your videos and some of the information has been helpful. However the video on the circle of the swing was the game changer. Watching you being able to swing from the inside and up and outwas what I was trying to do. But I could not get my body to do that. At 71 years old the body doesn't always do what I want it to. However the drill you did was what I needed to get the feeling of the inside and up swing. Although I could not do the 90 degree setup I was close and right away I got the feeling so that when I setup as normal I was able to now feel the difference. Thank very much I now see me shooting par or better as the driver was the lost strokes in my game.😊

I'm using a 10 finger grip with a wrap thumb. I'm never ever going back. Just started it today, didn't know what it was called, and always used an interlocking grip my whole life. 4 or 5 shots later, it was more accurate, more compression, more control. Really can send that right hand through the ball even worked better with my wedges.

Actually I experimented yesterday on the range (=golf lab; golf course is not the lab) and actually I found the overlapping a bit better than the interlocking grip I am using at the moment. Let's see what grip will give the best results in the long term.

Hi Marcus, i recently felt the speed of pushing with the trail hand vs pulling with lead arm and thankfully found your channel. I’m also a big fan of Mike Malaska and am very much enjoying starting to look at your videos. They are excellent and easy to feel. This trail hand push is new for me and i’m experimenting. Do you use any lead arm to start the downswing like the “malaska move” or do you feel like it is trail hand the whole way from the top down? I think i noticed today that when i put pressure into my lead foot that drops my trail shoulder so my trail hand can then push down very hard and compress the ball. It almost feels like i’m doing a palm strike right down into the ball, but noticed that isn’t quite right since there has to be some rotation. But just doing that palm strike feeling works very well so far! When i time the rotation with it (not good at that yet though) then the ball goes much farther and makes that beautiful crisp pop noise.

Hi Rick. Sounds like you found the missing piece in your puzzle. I use the push from the beginning at the top but don't copy exactly what I do. Find what works for you. We need more push than pull to get a stabil draw, that's what's important. Keep going. 💪

Never felt comfortable with my grip. Then I bought one jumbomax ultralight grip like Dechambeau uses and put it on a 9 iron and that club is now the most accurate in my bag. Not sure if am losing speed. But thinking of changing the entire bag…..though grips are so big, don’t fit into the slots as easy😅

Love your videos Marcus and they give me some great info to work on at the range. I have struggled for years with taking deep divots with my irons and can’t seem to flatten my swing or fix this issue. I feel how it slows my swing while tearing up the grass. Are there any drills you can suggest to try to fix this issue. I’m assuming I’m just too steep but again, I can’t seem to improve this issue. Thanks for all the great content.
@GolfwithMarcusEdblad

I'm confused. You need to understand that if you don't take divots you are too shallow and if your divots are deep you are to steep. Ok?

I got what I call a lazy right hand (I’m right handed) What I mean is it won’t get back straight at contact time so I get a cut type swing … not what I want After watching this video… I tried the 10 finger grip My problem with getting my right hand in more control with what it should do in the swing was what I was trying to do I worked on it today and found a great relief of the understanding of how’ll the right hand must move I’m a righty … so why not separate the 2 hands and not restrict and motion with the left hand … like I think I’ve done … until The results with both irons and driver was very good Right hand in charge… keep the hand away Maybe just for me

Hi, Marcus! In a number of your videos, you've spoken about the differences between speed and power. I know by "speed" you mean clubhead speed, and that's easily understood, but I don't know what you mean by power as it applies in a golf swing. I've heard a number of instructors talking about the length of the moment arm trumping speed for distance, and I've heard David Lee talking about the application of body mass in the swing as a key to distance, so I'm curious to know, in more depth, your thoughts on the matter. Thanks.
@GolfwithMarcusEdblad
@GolfwithMarcusEdblad 10 месяцев назад
Hi Mike. We are trying to move a very light object as fast as we can to transfer as much energy as possible. Almost every healthy golfer can generate the power we need to hit a golf ball 300 yards but why don't they. The reason is that we are not using the transmission correctly. Having a fast body but bad arm action is like driving a Lamborghini in first gear. A powerful engine but no speed. By loading and unloading the trail shoulder and arm we will transform a lot of that power in to speed and that is what I'm trying to get you all to do. If you watch LPGA you will see small girls hitting far better and longer than most grown men that are a lot stronger but not as efficient.
@mikeobrien1559
@mikeobrien1559 10 месяцев назад
@@GolfwithMarcusEdblad Ah! So, it's not that you're talking about power vs. speed, you're talking more about converting power into speed? This reminds me of Phil Mickelson and Jeff Flagg, on separate occasions, both talking about the "deceleration" (as they both put it) phase in the swing that transfers the speed from the hands to the clubhead. I think they are trying to accomplish, by slowing down both hands, what you accomplish by having a fast trail hand with a slow lead hand. Does that make sense? Btw, I know I mentioned to you before that your golf swing reminds me of Alexander Semin's slapshot. Last night, I was watching one of his highlight videos and I noticed that his trail hand passes his lead hand on his slapshots. To me, his slapshot always looked wristier than the slapshots of other players, but I think that's why. Certainly explains the speed he had. Thanks for taking the time to respond.
@GolfwithMarcusEdblad
@GolfwithMarcusEdblad 10 месяцев назад
@@mikeobrien1559 Every stick sport has the same "release". There will be no snapshot if the trail hand doesn't pass the lead hand. It's only the lead hand that decelerate. Mine start about two feet before impact and is a result of my hands working towards each other. A transfer of momentum.
