I chat with Msgr Charles Pope about Pope Francis' motu proprio, Traditionis Custodes, which sets strict norms limiting the celebration of the Traditional Latin Mass. We'll then take questions from Patrons.

Just throwing it out there, when we went to our FSSP parish before we moved they were the nicest, most welcoming group I have ever met in my life. There was a sincere outreach to welcome our family immediately and really take us under wings and include us. Never did we encounter a rude or overbearing “trad Catholic” at our time at Latin mass parishes!

I experienced ridicule because I did not wear a suit jacket. I had slacks and sleeves, but no tie or jacket. I would have worn tie and jacket but my friend who invited me would not loan me one of his. I don't condemn all TLM for this. Most of those causing division are podcast warriors who can't produce " fruit " in their own parish . They play nice with their priest and Bishops and those who attend TLM Yet get on the net and slander , divide, detract, and gossip.

I have memorized many of the prayers, and I understand much of it as if latin was my first language. I wish everyone could have a parish as beautiful and united as mine, it's truly been a gift from God. I agree with Msgr. Pope, in that making the N.O. more reverent, (Ad Orientem, communion rails, keeping the Sanctuary holy just for the priests, deacons, & altar boys, by moving the Ambo outside the Sanctuary, if having Laity do the readings, etc). We must keep sanctity in our worship.

I went to a wonderful Novus Ordo mass this past weekend, at a beautiful old church. I liked it because, although it was in English, it incorporated many old Catholic traditions - incense, traditional altar boys, ringing the bells, the priest facing the altar. People were given a choice of how they wanted to take Communion - those who wished to take it on the tongue went up the middle aisle, those who preferred taking it on the hand went up the side aisles. It felt very reverent and beautiful. I don't see why the only choices have to be TLM on one hand and felt banners and Father Groovy on the other.

I grew up in a Black parish and I frankly don't like the double standard for African Americans. They need the reverence and formation of the Traditonal Latin Mass too. It strikes me as condescending to act as if Black Americans couldn't possibly relate to a mass that is not totally protestantized to imitate a Baptist Service. I grew up with that stuff, and I think its the wrong way to go. By the way, none of the black kids I grew up with are still in the Church. They've all gone on to black Protestant churches or nothing at all. And I'm in the TLM, now. Pandering does not work, and hurts the faith. Respectfully Bishop.

The Novus Ordo doesn't look even remotely like a Baptist service. The Novus Ordo includes (1) collectively praying to Mary at every Mass, (2) collectively calling the Eucharist a sacrifice at every Mass, etc
@beautifulspirit7420

@@taylorbarrett384 I think it can depend how it is celebrated, I was a parishioner in a predominantly Black Catholic parish. It was the white liberal leadership that ripped out everything traditional and centred a gospel choir (this happened before I arrived). There was liturgical dance and centering of the rainbow flag etc. Although Black parishioners remained, many felt alienated by a Catholic parish that totally created a new parish culture. It became gentrified and the local Black Catholic community moved out. This was in the Seattle area. The Church has now shrank substantially in congregation. I was new to the US at the time and it was my local parish so I tried to be faithful but moved on too.

@@stutterstudios4731 the irony is last time I stopped by for a daily Mass a couple of years ago the parish priest was African (apologies for not remembering the country) and was clearly very traditional. I don't think he was enamored by the small altar that was now "in the round" in a relatively small parish Church. All the original interior was completely ripped out before I arrived 25 years before, so probably had the refurb in the early 1990s. The leadership was so proud of it at the time but of course now it's looking dated. That's another advantage to traditional architecture/interiors, they just don't date in the same way.

Just as Mr. Fradd has always remarked about the Byzantine rite, the Charismatic Movement, and other groups that bud in the church: “Do not demand conformity where the Church allows diversity.” That statement rang into my head while watching. If inclusivity is the goal, let it be the universal, outwardly expressed goal.
@mikazoftstrom2343
@mikazoftstrom2343 2 года назад
The TLM demands a specific theology and this is what modernists don’t want. It says to God, You are the One to be Worshipped and this is Your sacrifice the only thing that saves. It does not represent communal discourse and worship of our community.
@raulrovelo5544
@raulrovelo5544 2 года назад
@@mikazoftstrom2343 we are living in very turbulent times. I agree with both of the comments before mine, and I can clearly see the polarization that occurs because of these viewpoints. However, I will say this. For around 23 years, I didn't even know of Byzantine Rites, Ambrosian Rites, Dominican Rites, or any other Rites within the Catholic Church. Much less did I know that there was even a distinction between the NO and TLM. After reading the Pope's Motu Proprio, and how he expressed that the NO is the "unique" expression of the Roman Rite, I can't help but feel that the implications of that statement are somewhat puzzling. How can there be only one expression of the Roman Rite, if the Ambrosian and Dominican Rites still exist? Granted, they are not performed in normal Parish settings, but they are still other liturgical expressions of the Roman Rite. Are they any less valid or legitimate now? Why even allow for the TLM if the NO is the "unique" expression? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of union? As per the first comment, the diversity of the Church SHOULD be celebrated. The way I see it, we have two possible roads ahead of us that were set out because of this Motus Proprio: 1) We start moving forward towards a single expression of the Mass, with no distinction between Rites. Now, this sounds heavy, but if the Church's goal is to manifest Heavenly Worship through the Mass, it would make sense to only have one expression of this Worship (imo). 2) We revert to having different expressions of the Roman Rite due to the inconsistency that would arise with having more than one Rite being expressed on par with the "unique" Roman Rite.
@mikazoftstrom2343
@mikazoftstrom2343 2 года назад
@@raulrovelo5544 you are right, there is no such thing as unique expression of the Roman rite and there is only division when one says another is invalid. Each magisterium carries Jesus’ authority, which is eternal, as He is. To say what one pope used as worship to God is invalid, violates the authority granted to them by Christ. That’s why I never felt the NO was invalid, just another rite of the faith. However, it’s communal spirit can easily distract and lead others away from its intended purpose. It doesn’t have to be this way but it is. But to discredit the TLM is to invalidate centuries of authority and worship of God. It also allows for the invalidation of the doctrines that follows from it. This, God I hope I’m wrong, might be what this move is intended to do.

@@pastorpeteonthestreet3112 I agree with some of what you said except your foolish statement regarding the only earthy authority to interpret the scripture, the RCC. Also salvation is from grace and is maintained through the faith. Therefore only God’s sacrifice saves but obeying all the faith requires maintains the faith. Your statement on the faith as revealed in scripture literally means nothing if interpreted incorrectly. So the Bible alone is nonsense. As there was centuries of Christians before the Bible who managed salvation without the Bible. And if you are correct, which of the 20-30k different interpretations will lead me to salvation? Your interpretation leads to relativism and essentially you become your own authority. That is the first sin. Remember ray the fruit and you will be like God? According to the Catechism, you have a special responsibility to help the Catechesis of confirmands of the parish you belong to. You objectively belong only to the parish community local to you. The priest of that parish is your shepherd. [CCC 1309]"Preparation for Confirmation should aim at leading the Christian toward a more intimate union with Christ and a more lively familiarity with the Holy Spirit - his actions, his gifts, and his biddings - in order to be more capable of assuming the apostolic responsibilities of Christian life. To this end catechesis for Confirmation should strive to awaken a sense of belonging to the Church of Jesus Christ, the universal Church as well as the parish community. ***The latter bears special responsibility for the preparation of confirmands***." So the parish community bears a special responsibility for the preparation of confirmands, specifically because the end of confirmation includes awakening a sense of belonging in confirmands to their particular parish community. The Catholic Church isn't a place to go church shopping. You have a particular responsibility to your local parish for better or worse.

All of that, plus the kneeling for communion, but it was also the seriousness of it. We were in the House of God. A whisper by both the priest during consecration, & anyone who would shirk the assumed rule of silence before mass. Formal blessings of Holy Water, medals, candles, etc. vs the sadly quick sign of the cross by most Novus Ordo priest. I deeply desire to save the Extraordinary form of the Mass. I do believe in preserving our tradition and admittedly the morto proprio jabbed me to increase that desire. When I spoke against these things it is primarily because I had many bad experiences with what I have seen over time is the fringe. All this said, I intend to be obedient as humility is the paving on the way of virtue. We do what ought and leave the rest to God. I went to a latin Mass but it was ordinary form. It did little for me to be honest. I also recently attended what I believe to be my first questionable Novus Ordo Mass. If people have regularly experienced that, I can understand why they are wary. I think the best course of action may be to seek the best of both forms and find what the Mass should have been since Vatican II. I have no idea how to go about that. But God has permitted this for what must be a very important reason. Above all, do not leave the Church over this, schism is a mortal sin. The seas are rougher than they have been for some time, do not jump overboard from the ark, it is spiritual suicide.

I attend both and I agree that you can find beauty and reverence is both but it is more likely to find good shepherds in the traditional Latin mass. My NO priests abandoned their flock, it was very painful for me being denied the sacraments, all of them. I started attending TLM and... what a difference of attitude from the priest. I am not going back to NO, not because of the mass but because of the priest and like minded community. But I don't have any problem to go to a NO mass if there is not choice.

More and more people are coming to the Latin Mass. I drive an hour, one way, to go to this beautiful, holy Mass. The women dress modestly, and are veiled, even the young girls, the men dress like gentlemen, not all are in suits and ties, but dress shirts and pants. That's fine, but jeans, shorts, immodest dresses, beach wear, you don't see. Latin is a sacred language, it's beautiful and if you don't know what's happening, or understand, when you first go, just watch, be reverent, listen, and learn. I found, from the very beginning, that the old members were very willing to help, and were loving and friendly. Of course there are always people, everywhere you go, that don't reach out to new people. Some people are shy, and some not outgoing, but don't take it personally.❤️🙏🌹🤗❤️

Bishop Athanasius Schneider was asked in an interview recently: what do you think about this temptation to become Orthodox? "It is very false, because becoming Orthodox is worse than becoming sedevacantist. Because they reject the faith, the dogma of the primacy of Peter. This is a Gospel truth, it is a truth of dogma. Sedevacantism does not reject the dogma, it only declares, in an arbitrary way, the seat of Peter vacant, but this is unrealistic. The Orthodox, however, reject the dogma, and for this reason we cannot go in that direction, even to have a beautiful liturgy. You know that the Orthodox Church admits divorce. Do you want to have a church with divorce? You can get married, even in church, in the Orthodox Church: a second time, a third time. But only three times, not four. The second marriage, and perhaps the third, is called a penitential marriage. The rite is penitential: the father blesses couples who are de facto adulterers, with a somewhat penitential rite. So it’s a contradiction, and it’s very serious. There is no clear magisterium on contraception either, there is no universal magisterium. So it is problematic. The Orthodox Church has many values, I have many Orthodox friends, even bishops and priests and faithful, they have good values, a liturgy, sacredness, humility, reverence, fasting, penance, and that is good. But that is not all. " I think you mentioned in your other post that you came back to the Church through the Latin Mass. I go to an ICKSP Latin Mass myself. If yours is taken away I would consider the SSPX. Bishop Athanasius was the official observer of the SSPX for the Vatican and he says they're fine to go to.

Wonderfully, I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s with an old school priest who rebuilt communion rails, had only boy alter servers, and men on the alter. He was the only one distributing communion to everyone kneeling at the rail (on occasion he had men who had attended seminary, and left as deacons also help distribute communion) He never turned back to ad orientum- but did pull parts of the old alter and put it into the main alter. He had rogation mass in the spring, Christmas mass was beautiful with readings singing and lighting candles from an older style of mass. He only allowed girl servers in the 90’s when someone complained to the bishop, and he complied to his bishops orders. So- there were good holy priests trying to have reverent masses throughout history.

We suffered SO much abuse at the hands of those priests, and my grandparents solely in the name of their offshoot church. When my mom had cancer, one of their priests literally said it would be better for me if she died so they could basically take control and make sure I wasn't exposed to the "demonic novus ordo". What they did caused so much pain, and I still have scars to this day. I think we have to be careful because I've seen a tendency for traditionalists to take a position of self-righteousness and look down on the novus ordo or the people who attend.

Anyone (since it ended) can lay claim to interpreting the elusive, so called, "Spirit of Vatican II" and then later rhetorically, theologically misappropriate and stretch its vagaries beyond what it was in its original dynamics & documents; not to ignore participants' motives & intrigues, forever...after the fact which is now nearly six decades. I'm nearly at the end of my seventh decade of life. I was baptized R. Catholic in 1979 in my early 20s. @@taylorbarrett384 Just a question-as a whole, is the congregation “reverent”? The nonsense permitted during the Mass by the parents and children is what sent me running from the Novus Ordo.

@@room2327 I haven't seen anything in the congregation that is irreverent, except maybe once one time from a teenage girl who was on her phone. The congregation doesn't appear much different to me from the Latin Masses I've been to, where everyone seems just as silent and still as they do at the Novus Ordo.
