Singaporean here. almost all maid agencies have 2 things that make this case more complicated. The first of which is that most maid contracts stipulate that their EMPLOYERS are charged with buying adequate food for their domestic workers, not for DWs to buy it themselves. This is the same for healthcare as well. sadly due to limited oversight, there are too many cases where abusive employers refuse to do this and starve their DWs as well as refuse them medical treatment. secondly; women coming from overseas to work as Domestic Workers are often slammed with thousands of dollars worth of "agency fees" without the prior knowledge of the girls (to the extent where it could qualify as modern slavery). This drives them into poverty as if they cannot pay off their agency fees, they can't go home even at the end of their contract and will need to keep working. They are often forced to let interest on these fees accumulate as if they choose to pay it off then they wouldn't be able to send money back home. It's a disgusting practice that traps these women in these agencies. This is the background behind why they were taking loans - many Singaporeans don't know this and have the conception that "those people" just are frivolous with money, which isn't the case. Local activists trying to secure better labor rights for DWs are regularly arrested and monitored. It's not the utopia people think.

I really think your sympathy here is misplaced. In case it wasn't picked up in the video, this lady was able to buy an expensive digital camera (they were pricey at the time - which she refused to sell, prompting the fight), have weekend lunches at an expensive shopping district here locally (for those who are unaware, Orchard Road is a notoriously overpriced shopping district in Singapore), buy a myriad of cleaning supplies and dismemberment tools as well as wallpaper etc, go on a shopping trip after the murder, etc. None of the above suggests that she was living in poverty, but instead that her mismanagement of funds in living beyond her means likely caused her snowballing debt. Remember that as a live-in maid, her food and board were provided for (the 2 largest expenses in most people's budgets). Moreover, she was able to conceal the murder scene, dismember the body, go out and purchase cleaning supplies, clean up the mess in the employer's house without them even noticing. This suggests that she had a large degree of freedom in their absence and the run of the house (likely a very nice one) in their absence. Labour laws here also ensure that she was paid a living wage (Minimum wage laws are not the only determining factor to ensure a living wage. Singapore labour laws employs a progressive wage model for traditionally low wage professions which not only ensure a living wage but also provides a legal framework for progressive wage increases.). As a domestic helper, her medical bills are also covered by her employer under the law here. Her situation is much better than many others in her profession, and not at all similar to the definition of poverty (where one is unable to afford food or a place to live). Moreover, the reason for the violent fight was over her refusal to sell her expensive camera to repay her debt. Those were worth $500-$1800 back in the day. The fact that she bought one while being apparently indebted to loan sharks just goes on to highlight the level of her financial mismanagement. By comparison, my aunt's maid, spent her savings and her weekends attending a nursing course with her employers' full support, and is now a qualified nurse earning 5 times her original wage, other maids I have spoken to spend their weekends with friends at the park for a picnic or BBQ or join social clubs for free fun activities, meticulously saving every penny to send back home. Many have bought their families houses, farmland animals and put all of their younger siblings through school. While I have the deepest admiration for the women who put every effort towards bettering themselves and their families,by comparison, Guen is undeserving of sympathy. She killed her friend over a dispute over a camera and money, then carelessly dismembered her and discarded her body, and all in an effort, in my opinion, to live beyond her means.

They're often the ones to backstab/betray you (by stealing, slander, etc) compared to foreigners." 😱 I talked to my friends who live and work abroad and they have similar experiences to tell... Sadly, this case has further solidified that advice... ☹️ This reality is just too sad and tragic.

Good evening from Singapore 🇸🇬 I'm surprised to see a case featuring crime that happened on our tiny island. By the looks of this introduction, I'm guessing both best friends are/were domestic helpers from the Philippines. We do need more protection and mandatory off days for domestic helpers here, many work long hours and deal with unreasonable demands from employers. I don't actually recall reading about this case at all. The local papers sanitise cases by simply reporting them as "unnatural" or "police suspect foul play" and investigations are ongoing with little follow up until months or even years later. We had one dramatic case of a local, elderly man who murdered his high profile son-in-law for cheating on his daughter and business some years ago. Might be worth covering on your channel.
