In an universe of finite resources & a Galactic civilization that’s one hell of a dead planet when done planetary mining can you hear the slurping sound
In terms of galactic scale economics yes, it was practically a backwater, in terms of domestic trade, living standards and development, it was practically utopian when compared to many other planets though there was still substantial poverty, but more like being poor farmers and a lack of sufficient housing for urban centers, ironic considering the more affluent naboo people's humble origins.
Not to mention Naboo was stupidly pacifist and relied on the bureaucratic nightmare that was the late republic for security which also lacked a standing military. This is where the independent spirit of Naboo makes no sense as you can't be independent if you are outsourcing your defense.
No, they're not stupidly pacifist. ALDERAAN is stupidly pacifist, but not Naboo. Naboo has pacifist goals, but they're more realistic than Alderaan. At least Naboo has their own self-defense force.
Interestingly, Naboo was a bit divided on the issue of defense: it seemed Captain Panaka was one of several that more or less quietly disapproved of the queen's pacifist policy and believed that Naboo needed a more serious army than a few starfighters and armed police and guards.
Question: The Gungans are already extracting and refining the plasma on a scale sufficient to be the basis of ALL their technology. It seems to me that the Naboo already have a domestic upscaled operation capable of developing the plasma for an interstellar market if they weren't so xenophobic to the species they shared the planet with. Correct?
The problem was that the humans and gungans were not on speaking terms. Most humans didn't even know about how proficient gungans were with plasma productions. Also the gungans were not really big on dealing with the humans to begin with.
@@trenchtierstudios554 What about after the Trade Federation crisis? Things definitely got better in terms of inter species relations. Hell, Jar Jar was made assistant to Pádme.
@@goroakechi6126 Afterwards; yes everything improved. Chances were that the Gungans helped the Naboo humans with farming and processing the plasma. Not to mention that other carriers were more than happy to profit from the Trade Federations mistake. Both sides gained so much from the victory.
What if, after finishing her tenure as Queen of Naboo, Padme Amidala declined the invitation of being Senator for her planet in favor of a quiet life in Naboo's Lake Country? Would Palpatine still have the assination plots carried out? How would the relationship between her and Anakin play out differently? Who would be Senator in Padme's place to represent Naboo on Corasaunt?
if Amidala would have stayed on naboo thinks would have changed drasticly ----- but i am pretty sure it was palpetine who convinced her to be a senator ---- - i think that during the clone wars palpetine would have orderd doku to attack naboo and used his influence to send skywalker ther --- and he would arange for them to meat --- with her having no power ther is no need for assassination attempts ---- (and they where probably just a distraction anyways -- to make people hate doku/the seperatist more) - who would replace padme ?? ---- good question
tbh she was a good senator ---- but her influence was very limited -- in many cases her actions actully helped palpetine -- like when she uncoverd the coruption of the banking plan resulting that ALL banks are under the direct control of the chancelor
I know the later assassination attempts were because Padme became a thorn in his side, but wasn't the ones in Episode II just so the Jedi would investigate Jango Fett, leading them to Kamino to discover the clone army one of their missing Masters had apparently commissioned conveniently just in time for the Separatist Crisis?
The downfall of Naboo came from not using its rich plasma reserves to its fullest. With it they could have made a greater royal star fighter corps and Royal Guard to deal with such unfortunate situations
@@theliato3809 yeah. I mean, the US, a nation with a population of around 300 million, has a standing army hovering between 1 and 3 million, and an insanely large navy, great equipment and an insanely large airforce. Hell, even Russia or just the UK could prolly go toe-to-toe with the entire blockade force, at least on the ground and in the air.
@@theliato3809 agreed! They only had 15,000 max including its reserves. How ever I don’t believe that was the whole planets defense forces. Then again how big was Naboo’s population?
This is why I love the Star Wars fandom. We somehow manage to come up with elaborate, even complex and semi-realistic explanations for such minor nagging questions left by the movies, like, "What the heck was with those giant bottomless-pit rooms with plasma-tubes and plot-force-fields under the Naboo capital that Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon and Darth Maul fought in?" Still doesn't explain why there were so many layers of force-fields protecting what was essentially just a bottomless pit of nothing and why those fields were turning on-and-off at regular intervals with no apparent switches or control panels nearby. Or why Maul didn't just Kylo Ren-lightsaber-tantrum the crap out of the field emitters to get to Qui-Gon faster. Or how there could physically be water-filled tunnels running right through "The plaaaanet cooooore" without the gravity of the planet itself collapsing them (unless Boss Nass was hyperbolizing an the tunnels simply went deep into the crust like a hyperloop tunnel rather than literally through the molten iron core.)
I seem to recall reading somewhere that the Naboo religious belief was that the souls of their dead passed into the core of the planet that had sustained them in life. So, does that mean that in selling the plasma, they were selling the souls of their ancestors?
LOL Darth Tenebrous, imagine being a Sith Lord, supposed to be the most cunning being in the galaxy second only to your apprentice, being murdered by a mining company that didn't even know you were a Sith Lord. Darth Bane must have been rolling in his grave from that.
In our world, you have Norway who literally did everything right, in regards to their natural resources, or you become Russia, Venezuela, Saudi Arabia etc,as a negative example.
I read in Legends that when Palpatine was around Padme’s age he visited the planet of Chandrilla which he quickly noticed was significantly wealthier than his home world of Naboo. Naboo’s location in the Galaxy made it a disadvantage for Naboo since it was not located near major hyperlanes that connected to wealthy core and colonies worlds.
I’m sure Naboo prospered post Trade Federation occupation! I read from Legends that the Embarrassment of Naboo allowed Queen Amidala to nullify the contracts with the Trade Federation giving Naboo fair market value price for their plasma. It was also discussed that some of the money was spent on enhancing their local defenses moving forward. Being the home world of Emperor Palpatine I am sure he pumped more money into his home world and probably made favorable conditions for the planet to attract money and opportunities, possibly spending imperial tax money to fund infrastructure projects or buy materials from Naboo for imperial projects. I read poor remote planets like Teth became very wealthy during imperial occupation so I’m sure the same thing happened to Naboo.
A slowly developed domestic market would have been the best thing overall. Yes you get slower and less cost effective plasma however in the end the long term success for the planet become massive. Heck you could offer individual experts from the energy secure lucrative deals to instruct your people in the best methods of extraction. Paying individuals larger sums then they'd get from the company wouldn't be that hard when you have the funding of a planet behind you.
If our planet have its own plasma reserves, what can we build and be powered by such energy? Obviously, aside from lightsabers and plasma-powered weapons, of course.
I guess Plasma can be used for fusion reactors, however currently it is very difficult to store/transport plasma so its much easier to generate it on the spot. In the future they could also be used for shields (though the same store/transport thing applies). Also it is pretty much impossible for plasma to be found on a planet, it is usually found in stars.
@@aaronself2411 But plasma is limitless, right? Coal and oil have limits. And by that, I mean we will ran out of them one day. Plasma and electricity, on the other hand, are limitless. Is this right?
@@lerneanlion Plasma, is just the fourth state of matter. Stars for example are made up of plasma, and while there's a LOT of it in a star, it does get used up until a star destabilizes and either explodes, and creates a nebula, OR it implodes, and creates a black hole. But plasma is just a state of matter no different than how coal is a solid state of matter. Plasma is just what happens to combustible material when subjected to the extreme environments of things like stars. We actually use plasma right now. It's called a plasma welder. They're used for things that need extreme heat like tungsten, or underwater welding.
Its kind of weird how no one really talked to the gunkans on scaling up operations to exporting their plasma ? They just went with an outside force, weirder still is their not asking in negotiations for the establishment of an training academy on planet for their allowance to mine the power source.
Well one, alternative to the Trade confederation would have been to do like Botswana : state capitalism. Naboo could have taken a loan from the banking clan or something, to cover 51% of the cost of the plasma infrastructure on the planet in order to get a share of 51% of the subsidiary of the Trae corporation on the planet charged to exploit its ressource. This would have allowed some manner of control other this new economic sector while still letting the private actors to benefit from it. It would also have given Naboo the liquidités necessary to repay the loan. And with the rest of the money to teach slowly locals how to get the job done on the infrastructures and take the place of the off-world workers in time... With cheaper salaries. ^^ A win-win situation which the Trade fédération could have accepted whole also putting in safety Naboo independence. But oh well. Who cares? We only went to the show to see lights abers duels and lazers flying everywhere. :person_shruging:
The trade federation would only see to reason if reasoning would benefit them in the long run. Which in this situation, just siezing control of naboo was more profitable. They only lost due to anakin skywalker and his jedi friends. Had anakin never been involved im certain that naboo would have fallen.
Based on my country's experience, we split the mining region into several lots whereby the foreign companies have to bid in order to mine them. Then, we offer the winning party these JV terms: the state corporation has 40% equity in the mining operation and 5% royalty on the sales value to the state coffer. Let's just say the govt accumulated a lot of wealth from the dividend of that 40% equity... After having our own experts learn the tools of the trade, we start insisting on a local participation quota, either as employees or as vendors. See how having equity in the mining operations can enable such policies to happen?
Smart energy sector nations use the influx to diversify though they usually need a domestic in order to do so. It's the difference between Norway and Russia. This is a decent video overall but I might have gone into the real world examples to form a contrast.
Alaska hand only ~1/3 of the money they get from companys to the people ----- but still a good deal they´v got --- same as naboo 5% of revenue is a good deal
@@Gothic7876 Its what ever they build Light Sabre's out out of, Ullium hint hint became StarKiller Base and Jeda was a Jedi Strong hold was strip mined to build Death Stars
The second I travel to a new system in my Executor, prices fuel prices double. And when I brought my whole fleet it went up 8 times Fleet composition: 1 executor class SSD, 15 ISD II, 7 ISD I, 3 Tectors, 40 Arquitence light cruisers, 55 Raider Corvettes, 220 lambda and sentinel shuttles and most of the standard Ties are replaced with Tie defenders or upgraded with shields, torpedoes and a hyperdrive.
I've been away from the channel for a while, but wasn't Alan pro empire and all about humanity first? I find it funny hearing him say I support the republic. It's almost ludicrous to the point of being absurd.
You actually made good points on what the Naboo could have done to improve the standard of living for it’s citizens with their new found plasma wealth! Naboo didn’t have much strong local industry that were competitive and comparable to the economies of the core worlds worth investing in! This shows that the Naboo were not very good negotiators at all! According to Legends, the Trade Federation was a publicly traded mega corporation so the Naboo should have negotiated a reasonable stake in the company or discounted stock shares in exchange for their plasma! This would be more of a win win situation since the trade federation would spend money on infrastructure projects to extract and export the plasma, but Naboo would benefit from the profits of the trade federation since it owned shares in the company. If this arrangement didn’t work out, the Naboo could have followed the same model Norway did by creating a sovereign wealth fund and investing the plasma profits into shares of off-world companies that were more promising and profitable than their local industries! I do agree that spending the money on local education or enhancing the local security and defense force of the planet was an inefficient way of spending the plasma wealth! It also proves that the Naboo were not very good when it came to budget decisions. Naboo in comparison to our world would resemble more of the economies in the Mediterranean such as Malta, Cyprus or Portugal and at best Spain but were spending like Dubai and the oil rich middle eastern countries on lavish things used by the government. For a modest planet I felt the Royal house of Naboo overspent on the luxury Star ships that the royal dignitaries and even public workers used! If anything it was fine for Queen Amidala to have a luxury Star ship to use since she is the ruler of the planet but it was unnecessary for the local pilot security force to use luxurious Naboo N-1 Star fighters which would be the equivalent of the lambourgini or Ferraris used by the police force in Dubai! The Naboo were not very good pilots either in using these luxury N-1 Star fighters! We must remember it was not a Nabooan who successfully used this luxury N-1 to destroy the trade federation blockade control ship but a former slave boy from the dirt poor planet of Tatooine that did the job in the end!
If I were the Naboo leaders I'd just let my top scholars study on other planets with the existing knowledge and technology for plasma extraction and when they return I'd order them to share the knowledge they got to the universities. once enough specialist workers graduated from the university only then I'd form a government own mining industry and began extracting energy. The process is indeed slow AF but it guarantees self sustainability. This is also what the Japanese did after they open up their borders, acquire knowledge and lift their economy to industrialization.
Wow alan. You would think that you live here in Appalachia and understand what's going on with all of the gas and oil drilling. I'm coming to you straight from West by God Virginia and can tell you that there are a lot of wealthy people around here....none of them are native. On a plus note we have the advantage of tax breaks for the big energy companies....our roads aren't worth a shit, and cost of living is thru the roof Thanks for being there... May the force be with
Just because the plasma was mined on Naboo doesn't mean that it belonged to Naboo , it truly belonged to whoever was able to make the most profit from it .
I believe that the redistribution of massive wealth through the government is much better than just having some highly skilled individuals or certain jobs profit from it. This makes society more equal and helps prevent a part of your population getting left/ feeling behind by progress.
Surly Vader himself would put his foot down on strip mining Naboo. It's the home world of his love, and her final resting place. It's hard to.imagine Vader, of all people, simply wouldn't stand for it to be desecrated. Surely Palps is smart enough to know, seriously, let Vader have this one.
Here's a question I would love to hear the opinions of others on. We don't ever get a look straight down from any of the catwalks that Obi Wan & Qui Gon battled Maul on. When Maul kicked Obi Wan & he fell a couple of levels down, what would have happened if he had nothing to grab? Would he have fallen a few hundred feet? A thousand feet? I've always wondered how far down the bottom of the plasma complex was / just how many levels of catwalks there are.
This is Litteraly Scotland (Naboo) v London (Sith).... More oil than Saudi Arabia, UAE and Oman combined....still given pocket money to keep the slums freshly painted.
Omg look I love your videos they are great but your pronunciation of names is so cringy. Read up on names in the future please. Tenebrous. (Ten-I-Brus). Hego Damask. (D-mosque). mosque like a Muslim temple.
Being rich in natural resources don't need skilled labor. You just need to know who to outsource it to. Same problem on earth. That's why so many countries rich in oil, or diamonds, or any other valuable material have so much poverty.
In the book "Darth Plagueis" Plagueis kills his master by causing a cave-in inside an underground tunnel they were in and it crushes and traps tenebrous, I thought this was how darth tenebrous died?
Notes: creating your own industry is slow and expensive so hard to compet in the market, also the foren entity needs to bring in there own specialists and workers so your own citizens won't get more jobs like they could for a donestic product but could get a boost in things like hotels, taxies ect, Then this forren entery can sell the plasma they exstarct at a high price getting profits well only the government is given a small amount in tax needing to be distributed to the people or in the pockets of corrupt politicians
This video made me want to base a small campaign in a star wars ttrpg centered on Naboo and having the players explore the lore rich planet just to force them to interact with gungans and find out about the plasma as a source of fuel

the only thing i dont get is: if naboo had all these fiscal problems, aswell as knowing that with the plasma it is helpless to the federation, why did it buy fancy starfighters that cant pack a punch and luxury yachts for its royalty instead of funding a professional army/militia or surface to space weaponry?
The resources weren't the problem, the naive pacifistic political mindset was. There is no place for being naive in the real world. If you can't defend yourself, someone stronger will take what you have.
Yes! Excellently written. Just because all of us were born into plenty, there is no divine right for us to keep what we have. Your theory may explain why it might be a good idea for subsequent generations to learn a Chinese dialect. It doesn’t seem we will be willing to fight very hard for what we have been given. ‘We’ may be a little stunned upon discovering our plenty is no birthright.
