The Starship Berlinetta was far ahead of its time with these special gauges and controls. I really love Camaros and this package is one of my favorites GM made.
He definitely should invite Doug DeMuro to review it. I can hear his intro for it now...THIS is 1984 Chevrolet Camaro Burlinetta and its one of the coolest Camaros that you've never heard of...
Love it! When I was 15, I staged a full on ad campaign in our house so that Mom would buy a Camaro. I taped pictures from the sales brochure (they used to be rather lengthy magazines with dozens of pages printed on card stock) all over the house. Out of nowhere months later, she comes home in a fully loaded 1984 Berlinetta. It was her first new car ever. I turned 16 a month later and took my driving test in it. I recall that I was speeding but the DMV worker either didn't understand the dashboard or was just so entertained by it that I passed. I really was hoping for the Z/28 but the starship was pretty darn cool.
That interior is 1984 only. It was known as custom cloth, and was available on Sport Coupes, Berlinetta's and the Z28. This car has interior code 60C Sand Grey.
A Berlinetta adds a quieter inside and a luxury interior plus many other things. These are extra cost options on the base sport coupe. Thus BS1 the sound deadening option is standard on the Berlinetta. So is the B18 custom interior. So is the B48 cargo area trim ie hatch etc. Many sport coupes had these as extra cost options too. The base starter engine with a Berlinetta is a V6 not a L4 like the sport coupe. I never heard a Berlinetta was a star ship or ladies car until RU-vid and bought an 1982 camaro brand new. The few friends who bought used Berlinettas in the mid 1980s got used rental cars. So beware that both had their original factory oil filters on at 38 and 46k miles. The filters we took off still had the factory engine paint on one side of the GM filter. A Berlinettas sound deadening adds weight to the car. All sorts of extra panels to dampen the sound.
There is a Chevrolet commercial right here on RU-vid with this EXACT car advertising the dash, stereo, etc... "1985 Chevrolet Camaro Berlinetta Commercial"
My 87 Buick Grand National..it's T Tops leaked terribly...then again it had real power..unlike a Camaro or Trans Am GTA..it actually suffered from body twist
@@andymantoronto That's the first time I've heard they had too much torque. No the problem was poor design and UV exposure. If you buy a convertible (that's the closest the factory came to one.) expect it to leak. There was a redesign between the earlier versions and the later ones.
@@andymantoronto My first car was an 86 T/A. I met the older gentleman who owned it. He was my mailman when I was in college & recognized the car. He definitely did not beat on it and neither did I. It leaked like a sieve and as the car aged, it squeaked like crazy. On cobblestones, imagine a thousand mice (or rats). Gorgeous Flame Red car but build quality was a unionized afterthought.
This car brings back so many memories my aunt purchased one of those berlinetas when she was training at the police academy back in 1984 the original sticker price was $11,270 then my dad purchased a 1987 iroc z brand new i only drove it 3 times I love these 1980s 3rd gen F bodies
That’s a pretty sweet car! I found a 1983 Berlinetta with only 112,000 miles on it that was just about perfect, we replaced the window motor and that’s it. Everything works on his too, even the a/c, 5 speed behind a 5.0. It’s got the same louvers as yours with t-tops. I wish his has the rear spoiler though.
Video makes it sound like the digital dash was an additional option. But it was standard on the 84-86 Berlinetta, you couldn't get one without the digital dash and swivel radio. It's the defining feature of the third gen Berlinetta.
I remember when these came out. There was a Chevy dealership next door to my high school. Me and some friends would walk over and check out all the new rides. The first thing that caught my eye was that stereo pod. Thought that was the coolest thing I've ever seen in a Camaro!! Thanks for sharing!!!
I had an IROC in about 1989 and a friends girlfriend got one of these. Her's came from Alaska so it had AC delete and a block heater. Was always jealous of that damn dash!
I had one of those. Mine was a 87 Berlinetta. It had a gray interior with the same pattern as yours. I had the t-top bag also. Mine had a v-6 though. I wreaked that car in Peoria Il and it was totaled out. A old guy who just had surgery on a knee rear ended me at a stop sign. Luckily I had just bought a 85 Camaro base sport coup with what I was told was rebuilt v-6. The motor lasted about 500 miles in the 85 that I had just bought. The 87 Berlinetta was rusting out so that was why I bought the 85. The 85 had already blown up when I had the wreck with the 87. So took the motor out of the 87 and put it in the 85. It had about 185000 miles on it at the time. I wrecked the 85 in an accident during a fog where a farm trailer ran a stop sign. That wreck I was lucky to limp away from. I had 225000 miles on the motor from the 87 that I put in the 85 when it was totaled out. I got a settlement out of that wreck on bought a 93 Camaro next. Had that car for several years till I needed to trade it off for a SUV for work reasons.
I bought this same color model in 1989. I was 17. It had a blue interior.I put chrome Cragars with white letter General tires on it. I put a bra on it and blacked out the front and rear lights. You couldn't even see the back license plate.lol I even bought a pack of Winston to put in the pouch even though I didn't smoke.
it seems like the interior is taking alot of Knight Rider inspiration with the control pods behind the wheel, that moving center bit separate from the dash, along with the computerized tach and speedo units. Although I'll say this much, I do not miss the green digital readouts from that era lol
I remember my late uncle Bill had 1984 with 350 4bbl V8 true daul exhausted , Turbo 700SR 4speed Overdrive Automatic transmission , Tilt Steering wheel, Power Steering plus Brakes, Am/FM Cassette, T-Tops, Hatch Cover, 377 posi rear end gears, 5 Spock Star Chevrolet Camaro rims all seasons tires plus black 5 rims for winter season tires! Baby Blue color and Black interior! He had for 10 years plus got in 1989 RS I-Roc Z with every options except no T Tops or Sunroof and Cherry Red body with Chrome strip! 1989 had a options get he got 350 V8 motor true daul exhausted with 700SR 4speed Automatic transmission with 303 rear end gears ! But both cars did him well till 2011 he past away only had the 1989 RS I-Roc Z and hope get but got sold cheap by his Girlfriend!
This package was ahead of it's time but it was a gimmick. I have an 82' with analog gages and a friend selling them showed the "star wars" berlinetta. I was different but the plastic seemed cheap. It did attract a lot of attention at the convince stores. Kids would flock to mine until they saw it had the analog package. This one is a beautiful survivor.
It’s not at all a “rebadged Firebird”. The only body panels the thirdgen Firebird/Trans Am shares with a Camaro would be the doors and roof skin. Different hood, different fenders, different quarter panels, different bumper covers, etc.
@@Joesmusclecargarage kind of a joke. Sorta a figure of speech saying how similer the 2 cars are. But even then, as you said, it does share some things. Anyway, isn’t it a very similer chassis?
4 wheel discs and a posi! the only option mine was missing. I had a charcoal gray with dark gray interior. I will find another one and own it very soon!
I bought this car in blue in 1988 my first car . Purchased for 3500 paint paint was peeling but rest was mint . I beat the balls off that car sold it in 94.
My brother had a 88/90 model with a 2,8 5 speed manual. It would almost pull the front wheels in 1st grabbed hard in 2 Nd and 3 rd would almost get it to 100 mph . It was plenty powerful and got great mpg . 30+ on highway
i had a 82 berlinetta tan had 300thousand miles on it when i sold it. i miss that car. digital dash went out and had no wipers but i wish i had it back
I’ll admit to giving the Non-Alpha Male Camaros a gander after grabbing a New Model Year Brochure each time by the dealership. The way they “Lit” the Berlinetta was eye catching. Oh, the PRONUNCIATION of the word “Buttun” is “BuTTon”, emphasis on the “TEEZE”. Say it with me: “BuT-Ton.” See? 🤣 I digress. Nice car. Great Vid too as few Berlinetta’s receive any love, other than from their original female owners, (making their male counterpart was it every weekend). 🤘🏼
My dad sold GM in those days. He said a Berlinetta was a Camaro with all the options included. IMO, GM's had the best sounding factory stereos back then.
They did! Especially towards the mid and end of the 80's Pontiac offered a factory installed sub on most of their cars with a slider adjustment on the overhead console. Sounded fantastic! Nobody was doing this at the time.
They did. I swapped a head unit out of a fully loaded Astro into my tin-can Cavalier. Fun fact: the tape deck on the ones with the “Search” function is a Blaupunkt.
i know them well. my mom bought one brand new same color inside and out. only thing thats different between this one and hers is the power windows and the 305, hers was a crank 2.8. other than that, identical.
@@BigDaddyThrock so your telling me a standard coup comes from the factory with a digital dash, swivel radio, with the same wheels as this car, color combo, striping and "berlinetta" emblems on each b pillar??? My moms was IDENTICAL to this one. Look in the 84 brochure, the berlinetta comes standard with a v6. If you wanted to spend the extra cash you could order them with a 305 and power add ons. Mom bought the car from the dealer with 14 miles on the odometer.
I had a 82 Berlinetta, T-Tops, Spoiler, looked good. Biggest POS I ever owned I purchased it direct from GM and had it delivered to my dealer, got almost all the options. Broke down so many times it wasn't funny. I broke down 4 times in one day and what made me sell it was last time it broke down I was going thru a drive thru carwash. Way to go GM, and the doors were so heavy and of course the power window broke on a regular basis
Exceptional car! Very nice. I'm jealous. 😎 The rear gear if stock, is a 3.08:1. That's the only rear gear the 1984 Berlinetta got with the V8. You can check out all of the specs on www.Thirdgen.org
This car was SO slow!!!! My mom bought it new and they gave it to me in 94. It drove like a land yacht also.... big floaty drive characteristics. (Even when new) However, the sound system for the time was amazing! The cassette deck crapped out first, too costly to fix. The all digital equalizer was very cool to play with. The pods were a nuisance sliding in and out but the turn signal control were very cool back then.
They bash this car but this is for sure going to be my next purchase. If i find one ANYWHERE and put a 383 in it. Intake headers and im in a hyper car imo🤣 i need a t5 in it though idc if i have to BUILD it😭😭
Thats what I love about these older cars you can replace the shitty stock engine with a performance one. It worked for the Duke Boys and the General Lee.
Had the exact same car years ago besides the front seats didn't that design, paid $700.00 and it was in perfect shape besides these cars had a big flaw. The steering box would tear from the frame, I would checking to make sure there is no cracks by your steering box that is part of frame and once it breaks, there is no fix.
Were these ever an Indy pace car?? My neighbors have one decaled as a pace car and they believe it is legit and even though they don't store it properly it has only 12 thousand miles and the interior is like this car here and mint!!
