The Re:Zero Podcast | Arc 7 Phase 2 Analysis 

Hearing this analysis is really great for someone like me who already forgot some details about what happened back then in arc 7

Nice Sunday evening is saved, well together with todays web novel chapter I don’t think it was ever implied that he died at the end of the last phase, he has just lost consciousness as the curses were fighting over what to do with their host eventually leading to the conclusion of keeping hin alive

Yooo thanks for the podcast. Very fun to listen to! Glad wolf and gold really enjoyed the Todd vs Subaru section. That shit was AMAZING. I made my first full re:zero tier list recently and Todd managed to sneak into my top 10 characters in the series. He’s an incredible antagonist. It’s rare to see “shoot first ask questions later” type villians like him. Makes every scene he’s in so tense!

Great analysis! There's something I wanted to add here (Spoilers for this phase) . . . . I actually interpreted Subaru's plan in the alleyway a little bit differently. Although there's no doubt that Todd is terrified of Subaru here, I think a large part is Subaru's reliance on Todd's caution. Todd at this point was working under the assumption that Subaru had no idea he was there, so when Subaru makes it known that he is aware of his presence, Todd needs to rework his plan so that he can take into account that variable. Todd never goes into a fight without full knowledge and control, and Subaru knew that, so Todd chose to wait a few minutes planning something entirely different in order to not blunder due to a lack of knowledge.

Warning side story spoilers Todd is my 3rd or 4th favorite character from vollachia behind Priscilla and Vincent. He’s 4th if you count Al coming from vollachia even though he comes from earth

i think subaru also wet himself in fear when satella appeared the first time in front of amnesiabaru after he ran away from reid, though idk if that counts as subaru bc that was natsuki subaru after all todd also is an amazing foil for rbd since he leaves almost no traces to deduce anything from and even when confronted with subaru as soon as subaru tries to gain some intel to use in the next loop he just immediatley gets an ex to the head with barley anything he can take into the next loop [ Edit] Yall literally said the same thing 10 minutes later nice 😂 Interesting that Abel despite being the emperor was still open to Subarus plan from his first impression I would’ve believed he thinks his opinion matters above everyone else’s. Their dynamic is one of my favorites in the series

This phase really was the unfortunate case of tappei trying something new but failing at it even tho it does genuily have one of the best loops soo far and incredibly fun and witty dialogue, i also love the little seeds we see for the next phases being planted soo early on and ofc one of the most anticipated encounters (if you read ex 5 and other side content) as it's ending, yall were great once again and i can't wait for the next analysis.

I wouldn't compare it with a heist movie because he's also introducing more perspectives in doing so. Zikr getting a chapter is more the beginning of that than a way to experiment with structuring chapters and events imo, it would be much harder to care about the number of povs we get later on if we didn't get moments like this and it kills the pacing for some, but that's also in a story which a lot of people have come to expect as Subaru centric rather than a multi pov story. So basically I think you can all criticise it for sure! But bear in mind the goal isn't just to show the battle of guaral in a new way, and that people often think of his more multi pov sections more harshly(arc 5 is underrated for this reason, to me arc 6 is actually OVERrated for this reason though only relative to all of re zero - an arc focusing on Subaru's pov entirely is a much easier sell - and arc 4 is often seen as a slog in places). In fact in this phase it's highlighting both Subaru and other's povs in a way which is lost later on, where Subaru becomes more distant to us as an audience while other characters are more understandable. So I'm not sure the goal was to change up the storytelling so much as prepare a bigger cast of characters' introductions together with Subaru's next arc.

Subaru doesn't dress up as Natsumi Schwartz for the first time after Arc 4, but does it after Arc 2. Unless I'm mistaken, it's also the first time he meets worst girl. I shouldn't even need to say her name. I think Emilia is still under the impression that Natsumi Schwartz is real, and not Subaru in drag.
