Beijinos e abraços,
Carissa, Iwan, Frankie & Albi
Carissa, Iwan & Frankie decided one night over a bottle of wine that moving from North Wales to Portugal would be a good idea. Within a month they were on the road to Portugal to find the perfect piece of land to call their new home. We picked up Albi the cat along the way. Subscribe to follow our journey as we turn an old stone barn into our home, and learn the ropes of looking after a piece of land to make an abundant garden and one day, our very own winery.

Your videos are always delightful and I am sure none of us would expect them to be froth and light all of the time. You have taken on a massive undertaking and I feel honoured to be able to sort of share it with you because you include us. Despite everything, you manage to produce/create videos which are so beautiful, gentle and true to life. Thank you Carissa.

Love seeing the many changes in cloud formations, sunsets, and reflected light. Who knewe watching rain dripping off the roof could bring joy?! Your editing is mesmerizing. @@FrankieOffGrid it's so great to see him moving more freely. I would suggest water therapy in the lake, but he doesn't seem very keen! I'm assuming any lakes or water source is fairly shallow at the moment! Does Portugal have hose pipe bans? I don't think we currently do although we need rain! But I wondered whether it's a UK thing.

I empathize with you. We live in arid California so I also garden in a dry climate. Will pumping water up to a raised IBC help? Maybe more than one IBC is needed. Then the gardens can be watered via troughs (gravity fed). The higher the IBC, the more water pressure there will be. I always miss our apples during the winter season. You might consider slicing & drying some while you have them. Something to do while it's too hot outside & you've already napped. Our climate is mild enough that I am able to plant more vegetables this time of year. I pick things that have short growing seasons like bush beans, carrots, & lettuce (in shade only), & things that can grow in the cool season. But if you are burnt out of growing things for now then maybe a break from gardening is what you want. Your property has improved so much in the last year. No one can call either of you lazy.

The beginnings of living in the heat are hard, once you start to build soil by mulching, getting more shade from your growing trees, it’ll be easier. Also we are so hard wired to be productive, sometimes you just have to have a siesta, read some Winnie the Poo 😉 Could you soak your soil before digging, or did that coincide with the pump not working? I think your grapes might ripen if you remove a few leaves, let the sun get on the fruit, you could experiment, some exposed, some not, so you get plenty of sugar for fermentation, but enough acidity too for the balance of flavour… Keep going, only a few more weeks of this heat, all the best to you all ☺️

Hi Carissa and Iwan, I love watching your videos and can appreciate you grumbling about the heat because we have had some really hot days this week with Tuesday being the hottest day at 40C and it hasnt been cool at night either. I hope you get some much needed rain soon. I know how lethargic you feel when it is just too hot. Just do what you can and don't feel disheartened because your neughbours will be feeling the same way. Diogo is a sweetie but he is still a baby who likes to chew everything. Covering up the solar panel wires is a good idea and maybe getting a toy of his own to chew on would help? Your salad looked lovely and probably tasted divine because you grew it. I hope this week cools down for you. I hope the farmer who wanted to sell that strip of land with the scary well, lets you buy it for a sensible price.

I love to make and can applesauce. It keeps for years and I have made as much as I can get apples. I leave the skins on, use very little sugar if needed, and leave chunks in it. Sometimes I put cinnamon in some of the applesauce. It’s a good way to use imperfect apples. Just cut out the insect holes.

Just asuggestion - maybe start with a few beds that you can manage properly with watering/weeding etc, and then slowly add new beds once you have established a routine/better irrigation system. Right now it looks like the weeds and lack of water is nullifying a lot of your efforts earlier in the year. Hope you get the pump soon. 🤞

Carissa you have a lovely home and all the effort that you and your husband is putting into the property, is grooming the land into a magical paradise. I love it when you are both in the videos and are doing various tasks. Renovating is definitely a task of love and you and your husband emit that ambiance and passion in everything you do. I love your artistic style. Your drawings are so beautiful. Your property is a great source of scenery to inspire what you draw I am sure. Your wine making is very interesting and seeing the process, makes me appreciate wine much more. One thing that surprises me is the variety and size of insects in Portugal. Your bees are quite dark. Will you ever consider making honey? I know I am watching your videos out of order but it does not matter as they are all so wonderful to watch. Little Frankie is a cutie and so very well behave. My miniature, short haired dachsunds were all barkers. I have noticed Frankie is very laid back and calm. What is your secret? :) Enjoy your home as you have a wonderful life together. :)

Maybe I missed it in your videos, but drip irrigation would be your best choice, and taking advantage of the sloped terrain, you could place a raised IBC tank next to the well, and gravity irrigate lower part of the property. IBC would be ideally refilled by a 12v slow pump over the course of the day, powered by your solar generator. Mulching is a must to prevent fast evaporation. Best of luck!

Such heat is always tiring whatever age you are and its OK to slow down your pace of life. I think your garden will grow a lot better with more watering and that in turn will be less stressful to you plus you will get more crops from it. It will only give you food if you feed it with loads of water I'm so pleased you are going to get a water pump it will change things for the better.

I have a suggestion if that's ok. Here in Australia we have a product called Wetta Soil. I imagine there'd be something similar in Portugal. I live in Western Australia and most of our soil is sandy. Before i add organic matter/compost/good soil etc I sprinkle wetta soil (it can come in crystal form or liquid) then top with good soil/compost etc. Wetta soil really helps with dry arid soil. I also fertilize with blood and bone, which is cheap and works great. I imagine Portugal would have something similar or if anyone has spare animal poop from their goats, chooks etc. That really works well. You're both doing a fantastic job on your property.

Thanks Sonia! Yes I love the no dog approach. I think with our current soil though we need to do a bit of digging first, and then slowly build up to no dig. Plus it’s quite expensive to buy that much compost all at once. I do love both their channels though, and hopefully we’ll have our own homemade compost soon too ☺️🌱 thanks for watching 💛

I was also wondering whether you know of keyhole gardens? I learnt about them as a way to grow crops in parts of Africa. I got the following from good old Internet! A keyhole garden is a two-meter-wide circular raised garden with a keyhole-shaped indentation on one side. The indentation allows gardeners to add uncooked vegetable scraps, greywater, and manure into a composting basket that sits in the center of the bed. In this way, composting materials can be added to the basket throughout the growing season to provide nutrients for the plants. The upper layer of soil is hilled up against the center basket so the soil slopes gently down from the center to the sides. Most keyhole gardens rise about one meter above the ground and have walls made of stone. The stone wall not only gives the garden its form, but helps trap moisture within the bed. Keyhole gardens originated in Lesotho and are well adapted to dry arid lands .

An Illustration picture of Australia, Oh Hell, of all the places in the world, where did that come from.. Everything needs water to grow, so when it rains you have to catch as much of that water as you can even from temporary tarpaulins that you remove when not needed. Or a small structure somewhere near your garden to not only house a couple of water barrels but your gardening tools as well, and that roof will add to your water catchment systems and be gravity fed. Just a thought. I have seen alot of grapes tied to a fence , better air flow and sunlight hours.

C & I, I realize that trench and flood is the easiest method of irrigation but watching Kylie and Guy's drip irrigation system that I suggested to them last year convinces me and them that they have gotten such superior results this Spring and Summer so far. You appear to have sufficient water resources on your land. The infrastructure investment will pay off year after year if your budget can handle it. The Israelis have been using the drip system for several decades to farm their desert. I notice the Portuguese Homestead family just added a drip system. Also raised beds are beneficial against voles and moles? Good luck!!!

Drip irrigation works so well in central Portugal. If laid out correctly you can turn on/off sections as needed, hence better usage and less water wastage. Also it can be extended as you increase your plantiing areas. You can buy solar powered water pumps.

I have been trying to get her Grannie-Annie to install a drip feed system as they use a sprinkler which is an ineffective way of watering but the initial cost puts them off and in the South East of England they are not on a water meter so there is not the incentive to save water or money.

So funny, did not cope with the heat here in South Wales but now it's raining (although we do need the rain). You could ferment the windfall apples to make apple cider vinegar, it is good to put a little apple cider vinegar in the chickens water as it is good for their gut health. Love the relaxing feel of you video's particularly your music choices. Definately see the improvement in your video editing 💚 shots, composition, framing and editing pace, loved the section of changing the shot to match the music very slick 😃. What's the update on Diogo, I did notice he is still limping a bit. Hope you are both well and you get a bit of rest bite from the heat.

From North Wales, we don't need anymore rain. You should put a little cider vinegar in the humans water as ditto. Their videoing does have a lovely feel to it. 🐶🐈🐱🐱🐔🐔🐔🐔🌡🌨🌩🌨☔

Try putting a long thin, round plastic tube into a drilled hole on lid of bucket you have wine in .place one end into bucket in space above liquid and other end into a class jar of water sitting on top of bucket. This will let air out and stop it going in.
