Trash is a musician, designer, and tattoo artist. She has been part of the Korean punk scene for two decades. Here, she talks about how she discovered the underground subculture in her late teens and then watched it develop over the years. She describes the community's most important bands and people, as well as those who others might have forgotten along the way. The conversation also reveals how every time punk rock seems as if it might become mainstream in Korea, something comes along to force it back underground.
Much of my own twenties and thirties are a blur, but I played a lot of the same shows and venues with Trash. That she continues to keep the flame alive is testament to her passion and desire for this scene.

What Korean punk bands did we miss? What venues or bands are your favourites?

In addition to the WTM I like rock tigers (락타이거즈). They are not properly punk, but Ska Rockabilly, they made excellent songs and the singer Velvet Geena enhanced them very well.

@@StefanoDallAgata Big fan of the Rock Tigers. Yes, they had a gimmick but they also put on a great live show. Remember seeing them for the first time in Bar Nanas in Itaewon and being blown away by it at the time. Was all so visual and energetic. We talked about Geena and the band a fair bit during the conversation actually.

Nice one! Let us know what bands you're listening to or what you've found in the Korean scene. Also, got any Gang of Four going on in that list? They were a big one for me early doors!

This is sooooo crazy! I was literally just talking to a guy at work yesterday who was a gutter punk back in Seoul! We were reminiscing about all the old punk bands we knew and played with. What are the freakin odds???

When I first came to Korea in 2007 there was a great Korean channel called OrienKorean. It had such a huge array of Korean music, mostly lesser known, including a lot of punk. So sad it got taken down.

Yeah - it's really sad when those things disappear. We have more music and availability than ever but there will always be some things we can never find again.

On Sunday I will be watching Seoul band Rumkicks, in Osaka, on the third of their three date tour of Japan. So far this year the have also done about 8 dates in Indonesia, 19 in Europe, including almost filling the main hall at the Rebellion Festival in England. And they have another European tour in November. Their friends, 18Fevers, also went to the Rebellion Festival, so maybe the bigger problem is lack of interest in punk within Korea itself, rather than the bands. I would add I only dipped in and out kf this, being unable to give it more time while on holiday.

Rumkicks are good fun and good people. Their music is pretty safe, however. There's very little in them that feels punk (to me personally) beyond their outfits, but I'm certainly not the adjudicator. Let us know what you think of them. 18 Fevers are doing alright with their Distillers thing going on. Got a good drummer, for sure. Your comment that the problem might be a lack of interest in Korea is a very interesting one. I think you're right. But, alongside that, people aren't really exposed to a lot of different genres beyond pop music. TV in the UK in the 80s and 90s showed all sorts of things and, without personalized social media, you had to sit through all sorts of things which you might not necessarily like but would widen your palate and expose you to different things.

@@DavidTizzard "What is punk music?" is one of those questions that gets thrown around a lot. Some have a narrow definition, and for some, it's broader. Few, in the UK at least, would have a problem with saying The Exploited and The Toy Dolls are both part of a broad genre. For others it's about the attitude, and needs to have that angry edge. Rumkicks are certainly neither a hardcore nor angry band, despite some of the messages in their songs, but for me, neither are prerequisites.
@DavidTizzard
@DavidTizzard 10 месяцев назад
@@RevStickleback Yeah - you're completely right. Well said. I think I was just trying to say that Rumkicks aren't really my thing. Had a lot of time for Billy Carter and also think Dead Buttons have done great stuff over the years though. All just different taste, I guess ^^
@RevStickleback
@RevStickleback 10 месяцев назад
@@DavidTizzard No problem with people having different tastes, although punk in particular does have a bit of a problem with US fans in particular, declaring that if it's not hardcore then it's not punk. Nearly all of the online abuse they get comes from that direction. 18Fevers' song Gatekeeper is about similar attitudes that even exist in Korea.

Speaking of the accident, I understand the discomfort in seeing your friends under attack by the media, but after all, perhaps it is right that it happened. Like the sex pistols on TV with The Sun who titled "The Filt and the Fury", the punk is irreverent. We then think of Piss Factory of Patti Smith with the word Piss, or his phrase "I Don't Fuck Much With the PaS But I Fuck Plenty with the Future": they were scandal in the "70s.

Huge fan of Patti Smith. My guitar hero is/was her husband Fred Sonic Smith, particularly the work he did with Sonic's Rendezvous Band. City Slang is rightly titled 'the greatest rock song you've never heard' haha
