The failure of STEM fields to be sufficiently well-rounded (especially wrt ethics and communication) is one of my favorite topics as someone who studied engineering. Like Jarvis said, the topics are ultimately not always that complicated! But gatekeeping makes people feel important. Really enjoyed that discussion!

29:00 A massive part of the problem is that our society devalues the humanities (which includes communication). I am a Studio Art major, but initially, I was a Mechanical Engineering major, and the difference between the two groups is astounding. Most, if not all, of the art majors I've met at least appreciate and understand the importance of STEM. However, most of the STEM majors I've met look down on the humanities despite lacking even basic knowledge about those disciplines. There are specific humanity courses for STEM majors that are easier than the regular version of the class. I was one of the only engineers I met with any amount of communication skills and one of the only engineers with experience writing research papers. I've been told to my face that STEAM (science, tech, engineering, art, and math) is stupid because humanity majors "don't deserve to walk the same stage for graduation" because we don't work as hard nor "value" STEM enough (or more accurately we don't worship STEM enough). We are also constantly told that our major is "easy" despite requiring more in-class time per credit than any other major. Studio courses are 8 hours a week of class minimum plus at least 20 hours a week outside of class, and they are worth 4 credits max. Most other majors and all STEM majors get one credit per hour. I'm getting 1/2 a credit per hour. As someone who has done both, I have to work way harder to do well as an art major than I did as a mechanical engineering major. It's not even close. No one wants to live in a world without art, but no one wants to value those who make that art.
@saggguy7
@saggguy7 Год назад
the whole thing with us having more work per credit hour is so real. i’m a music therapy student and my undergrad requires individual music lessons that are worth one credit, but everyone enrolled in music lessons also has to take an ensemble class that meets three hours per week, a performance class that meets one hour a week, a seminar class that meets one hour a week, and a concert attendance requirement that mandates attendance at one 2-3 hour concert per week. for one credit. you’re expected to practice your major instrument at lease a few hours per day. not to mention my field placements where i see 4 clients per week for 45 minute sessions, meet with a supervisor twice per week for an hour, meetings with the clients families on a regular basis, and take a one hour seminar every week that has regular assignments like any other class. all of that is also worth one credit. then there’s all of the other more traditional courses i have to take, which ARE stem classes half the time - statistics, neuroscience, cognition, human development, research methods, etc. - only to tell people what i’m studying and have them go “wow, they’ll give people a degree for anything these days” 🙄
@bobertpaulbufano4569
@bobertpaulbufano4569 Год назад
Friend, I have a similar experience. Music major with a double in RS and anthropology. People hear that lineup, and I can feel the judgement leaking off of them. Nevermind the fact that I have edited lots of STEM majors papers, and they don’t know basic grammar, and I wouldn’t even consider that the worst part. We literally NEED the humanities because they help us to understand what being human is. Like, it is one thing to know how your body functions on a minute level, but what about the post-colonial systems of power that still effect our everyday lives. What about empathy, literary criticism, expression, and like a thousand other crucial things we need in order to understand ourselves. This is really scaring me right now with modern developments of AI since all the information going into the development of software has bias baked into the system. STEM AND the humanities are SO important, because there is so such thing as a truly rational human being. We are all biased individuals just trying our best! Shit gives me anxiety….
@MrCrunch808
@MrCrunch808 Год назад
Every Humanities and Art General ed requirement I take is such a massive time sink and is always the class I have to plan around. I think everyone in CS in my school knows that GE classes are just more difficult than the CS and engineering classes we take, just cause you have to spend so much time reading and writing.
@lowtech42
@lowtech42 Год назад
💯 Couldn't agree more! I graduated with my STEM degree and I will tell you right off the bat that my top 3 favorite classes were Humanities, African American Studies, and (surprisingly) British Literature. These actually aided my personal growth and maturation outside of just learning lucrative technical skills for the job market. I believe it's why I'm such an unapologetic "blue-haired SJW" now and not some NFT-scam & Elon worshipping manosphere type that other STEM bros fall under the spell of 🙄 The only actual STEM class I enjoyed was Calculus 3 which was taught fluently by a prof who was Black like me and could teach the concepts in a digestible way without overcomplicating it like the others. If I could do it all again, I wouldn't. But if I HAD to, I'd still be a STEM major, just with many more of the humanities to help further balance out my development.

I wish I knew about this podcast when this episode came out! In regards to what Frogan was talking about around 28:00 with breaking scientific information down to a more accessible level, I once assisted a local research facility with simplifying an article for younger children (9-11) since I was around high school or middle school age at the time. They wanted to find a way to convey new science news for kids, and straight up the person I was working with said scientists tend to work on these things for so long they don’t realize how complex it can be. Was super interesting and eye-opening with just how long we spent editing.

I have to disagree a bit because I do think there are some good communicators on the left but a lot come from marginalized places so they are almost immediately discredited or not taken seriously. Tone policing, misogyny, misogynoir, transphobia, ableism, etc. I wouldn’t posit that a lack of perceived presence is from lack of trying or a dearth of skill. Like, there is a reason cishet men, mostly white ones, dominate this space and it’s not necessarily because they are the best at communicating. Especially if they are ‘bro coded’ or ‘controversial’. A lot of people are considered controversial just because they exist even though they give accesible, nuanced, well-researched information with data to back it up.

Parasociality is a good thing when the person with the power (in this case the youtuber) makes sure the boundary is clear, tbh. It's healthy when both parties understand the relationship status and how it works. Parasociality seems to hurt people most when the creator acts like all their fans are their best friends, and I don't want to name names, but it's often the ones who end up with obsessive/indoctrinated fans. It's fine to consider your fanbase a fanbase, and to remind them that the friendship they perceive is only one way, because most people are aware of and fine with that. Like, you guys are MY best friends, but I know very well that I am not YOUR best friend. If that makes sense haha! Also this made me think of a funny modern situation where your facebook relationship status can be set to Parasocial hahaha

His content definitely teaches you a lot but through being very fun and silly and treating right wing pundits with the amount of seriousness they deserve to be treated with which is none. It's basically a reaction channel to conservative crap but in a way that both teaches me something and doesn't leave me feeling like crap after watching too much of it because it's so shitposty even if he brings out study data and absolutely tears apart shitty talking points at the same time. He also has an incredible soundboard. Idk I think it's very accessible and digestible and sort of a breath of fresh air among leftist creators that is sorely needed.

Topics of convo seem so random but I am always captivated! Idk how you all balance intelligence, experience, and relatability, but it's awesome (and kind of not fair).

Communicating at the same level is so important, especially whats natural for you I had to communicate with my ex on a second grade level and it drove me nuts that I had to explain even simple words and concepts to him My current partner is on the same level as me (if not a bit higher) and it's so refreshing to be able to keepat my own pace or even pick it up a little instead of grinding things to a hault

1:01:02 sooooo correct!! I also love their Greatest Hits for the single reason: it features an exclusive song "From Now on We Are Enemies" which is one of the best songs ever

I feel like only the bigger university cities took covid seriously. Because I worked at a university during the beginning and height of the pandemic and it was dead there was no one out and everyone wore mask. But the moment restrictions let up people gave in quickly because it is already hard to breath in Flordia at the time due to the heavy humidity so when we could mask were off but indoors I found people were more willing to wear mask especially in public transport

I had a Rockband game for my NIntendo DS and it had Thnks Fr Th Mmrs, SK8R Boi, Ocean Avenue, Check Yes Juliet, and some other classic pop punk songs when I was lie 10 years old and I was obssessed with all those songs, it introduced me to pop punk and I was hooked! My favoright in HS was also All Time Low, they currently hold the record for band I've seen the most in person but 😬 One of my faves that you guys didn't mention but may like is State Champs! Their albums Around the World and Back and Living Proof got me through a semester of college lol

i remember in the first few months of lockdown, my dad had gotten really sick and was experiencing symptoms. he went to the ER but the doctors refused to test him and sent him home with nothing. while i understand that the doctors and nurses didn't understand it at that time, it was terrifying and aggravating. because during one night after the ER, my dad stopped breathing and fell off the bed in his sleep. it was so scary and infuriating to think back on how doctors failed him and refused to diagnose/treat him.
