It's no secret that Scoot Henderson's subpar start to his career has been dissapointing. Today we cover the cause for his bad play, and breakdown what the future holds for last year's third overall pick.
Dearron fox his rookie season averaged near identical stats with the same problems as scoot right now. It’s to early to just write him of. Scoot will be fine
@@joshsmith3873bro they didn’t trade Dame for Scoot lol. They wanted Dame gone because he was too expensive. Portland won’t see the full return they got for Dame until Brogdon and Grant are traded most likely at the deadline.
exactly, even this year too, despite the difference in position, chet and wemby have poisoned the minds of casual nba players into thinking scoot henderson is a bust 30 games into his career.
Facts. The more they rely on their athleticism, the harder that adjustment is to make. Everybody is a phenomenal athlete, freak of nature or ultra skilled at this level. Fundamentals are the equalizer.
I watch every Blazer game and early in the year he looked terrible but he’s definitely improved. His passing is what stands out to me and his shot is a lot better than the first month. He’s also scared to shoot when given space and Chauncey needs to encourage him to shoot those even if he’s afraid he will miss.
@@sirporkka he only shoots when he’s wide open though. Like with no defender within 10 feet of him. There are so many posessions where the defender is sagging off him giving him way more than enough room to pull from 3 and he doesn’t shoot it
I watch every game too, today he had a rough shooting game but he definitely improved every game. His defense and passing is less twitchy and a lot more with the flow of the nba. He will be fine
@@thuggwaffle8825Nah, man. Until he can consistently hit 3's that aren't totally wide open & until he can learn to shoot better in the midrange & at the rim... He absolutely does not need to be taking more 3's. I watch every Blazers game too. You're literally the first person I've come across who suggests that he isn't shooting enough from deep. Yes... He's going to need to at least develop a serviceable 3 ball in order to reach his ceiling... But that's honestly the last of his concerns atm. Since starting the season 2/24 from 3, he's shot 36/103 (approx 35%), which is serviceable... But that's mostly because they're wide open. All he needs to do is make em pay for sagging way off him like they are, in order to help open up the lane. As of rn... It's his midrange & finishing at the rim that needs the most work, by far.
Imagine writing a player off after their first couple months in their rookie year at age 19. Pretty absurd if you ask me and I’m not anything close to being a blazers fan
and i think thats the thing. there was so much background stuff inside the franchise about this exact pick, and outside fans cant possibly know that. the blazers knew wemby was unlikely, wanted to keep their only recent FA (j grant) happy, so they wouldnt draft miller. at the same time, lillard wanted to contend for the blazers, and asked them to trade the third pick to rather improve the roster. chances one sees aside, they could have gotten OJ Anunoby with that pick and their other assets. scoot portrayed himself as a very mature guy, league ready and a leader (all these lies are on the blazers IG if you're bored enough to scroll down to pre draft) and honestly, i was sad about lillard leaving, but pretty optimistic, i saw and still see huge upside in that roster. but seeing where we are now, scoot is the common denominator for a lot of the blazers problems. he didnt single handedly cause them, but he is the only player that is involved in all of them.
Tonight Scoot Henderson shot 8 of 15 from the floor, 3 of 7 from 3, and 11 of 12 at the FT line for 30 points in 37 minutes against the Denver Nuggets. His streak of unmissed FT which led the NBA was ended at 39 straight. He becomes the first Trailblazer to score multiple 30+ point games in a rookie season since Damian Lillard.
@@JimmysJohn33 yeah I think he can be very good potentially. But we have to be honest about his 37% fg as a rookie, which is basically as bad as it gets in the nba. Can’t just highlight the good and dismiss the bad and praise 8/15 and then ignore 3/16
@@Ballin-97 westbrook had the same efficiency as scoot for his first 2 years. Guards like this can't be expected to start out playing winning basketball. They never do. PG's need time to slow down and dissect the game for their value to come through. This video is clickbaity trash
3 months into his NBA career at age 19 as PG and he's averaging 12pts 6assists... hes doing better than Kobe 😮 Edit He has 15pts 7 assistsin First half tonight
@eddydesir7702 man that was normal back in the volume shooter days... Now in the analytics days it's awful... it is bad though lol. Still his best game so far.
@Vipa567 You can't rely only on numbers. There's bunch of other factors involved. He was 7-8 the night before. He's 19. Curry shot 1-8 from 3 the other day and we all agree Curry is best shooter of all time!
How about you mention the efficiency? HE's been consistently one of the worst players in the league in +/- and if you've watched him play, it's horrendous.
NBA fans are a joke, needy little whiners.. no patience whatsoever. That's a kid just entering a grown mans league and he came from that trash ignite system that was so "highly touted". I just wonder how many times young players can prove them wrong before they shut up
He’s extremely young to be judged, BUT his misses are alarming to say the least! Wide open air balls the other night, wide open flying off the backboard from 3. That’s a problem…
We can all agree he is struggling. But, I'll give him a good 2 yrs before calling him a bust. He has so much potential and I think he can become great.
@@falco00_ 2 years is a lot for a rookie he has to improve massively by next season he has to at least shoot 45% from the field and 35+% from three or he will be a bust.
You forgot over-confidence and needs to play better off-ball and slash. He is not a PG atm.. as u said too many TO. Needs to play simple and slow down with ball.
@@BarbabusDGreezy no. Rookies aren't supposed to look ready for the NBA for a lot or most of the time. Especially coming from somewhere like Ignite, who is largely not getting the cream of the crop.
@@kb5509 if someone is drafted in the top 10 there is an expectation for them to come in and immediately make a positive impact on the court for their team production wise and that's a fact
Almost no rookies are ready coming into the NBA. Look at the stats just from this year alone for example. G-league just has a smaller talent pool compared to College. G-league Ignite and Overtime elite had 5 or 6 prospects combined in the draft. There were a couple Euroleague ones and the rest are College prospects. That's around 50 Rookies straight from college and maybe 5 of them can be defined as NBA ready. When Prospects come out of college 1 out of 15 rookies can look good and they attribute that to college Ball (even if the other 14 don't look ready) instead of just that rookie being particularly good
I’m not a big Scoot fan. But he will be better next year. Some guys have a steeper learning curve and the PG position is probably the tied with Center as the hardest position to play now
Obviously calling anyone a bust in their rookie year is just unwise. However, it’s never too early to adjust a player’s future projections based on hard evidence. And start lowering the odds that a player might reach their potential. If you thought he was gonna be a 2.5/10 rookie with 9.5/10 potential, it’s perfectly fair to now say maybe he’ll actually be a 1.2/10 rookie with 8/10 potential.
Kind of ironic that the day after this was posted, Scoot had a career high 33 points, 9 assists, 7 rebounds, and 3 steals against the Suns and that was without Brogdan, Ayton, Grant, or Sharpe playing. I kind of wonder if the Blazers were not so guard heavy and Scoot had more minutes like this one (played 40 min this game), if we would see more of this from Scoot.
@@Jack-jx6ln What are your thoughts on Scoot's efficiency in his most recent game against the Pacers on 1/19/24 -- 10 pts in only 8 min of play off the bench until he got injured?
@@Jack-jx6lnTrue efficiency is measured in a much larger window, than getting hot or one favorable match up. A game that yields 140+ points for both teams leave a lot stats to be distributed for a lot of players.
When’s the retraction for this video (wow, what a poorly constructed and researched take) coming out? Scoot is no bust, and he’s going to ball out the next few months. The league will be forced to notice.
Yeah, because he played the most minutes. 4 other Blazers would have equaled or surpassed him had they played as many minutes. They lost by 62 and quit. Chauncey threw Scoot under the bus. 33/9/7/3 tonight btw.
It's too early to say he's a bust but he hasn't shown anything to suggest he won't be a bust. An occasional good pass isn't anything impressive. I've seen Killian Hayes do that. Hell, Killian Hayes is a better shooter and finisher. Scoot may develop but it's a long road for the guy and if the Blazers commit to giving him a lot of playing time, they need to just commit to four or five years of being bad.
He’s shooting 30% from three he’s averaging 12/3/5 which ain’t bad for a rookie maybe his field goal is bad but it’s to early he stills has a long way to go u can’t call him a bust when he hasn’t even played a whole season yet.
This is why making videos of rookies no matter how much they struggle in the first year is dumb and tells you someone has never played sports. He was always going to struggle a bit being a lead guard who doesn't shoot good from 3
Nah he’ll be fine. That game last night he took 31 shots to get to 33 points. Really bad efficiency, but that will improve. He looks way better compared to when the season started. His defense is getting solid too. That wingspan along with the athleticism will be a deadly combo if he figures out how to put it to good use on defense.
The problem with Scoot is that he has never been a good shooter even in the G league it was all based on potential. But i think people need to get their expectations down he is probably not a future star more like a good defender averaging 18 a game on decent efficiency. Which is still very good.
People who create garbage like this forget how awful Kobe Bryant was when he was 19 y/o. Scoot is far from a bust. Obviously, this video was made before Scoot started to improve. His dunk on Damian Lillard is timeless. You'll all regret making the "Scoot is a bust" statement.
This video is a little old but scoot has been averaging 15 pts and 5 ast on 42/37/96 shooting splits. Significant improvements within his first year. If he averages 20+ pts and 7+ ast in the next few years he's definitely not a bust but an elite player.
I think eventually he’s going to be a really good player but not a star or superstar. We will see in a couple years if he continues to improve his game.
People expect a lot from the 3rd pick in the draft, they want a guy who has instant impact. But point guard is the most difficult position to play in the NBA and it's clear Scoot still has a lot to learn. He is very young so there is still plenty of time for him to develop. I'm not certain he's going to be an impact player but will probably find a role somewhere. For him to be an impact player, he needs to develop his perimeter shooting, especially that 3 pt. shot.
I used to live near the Ignite's facility ... they openly do NO actual coaching. All they do is make the players look good. It's marketing not player development. What's worse, they hype the kids up to themselves so they have huge egos and think they DESERVE every shot. The Warriors knew Kuminga needed a lot of development in his understanding of the game, the problem was Kuminga didn't know it. He believed that every time he made the right pass or scored a bucket that he was ready and the team was holding him back. He's finally starting to put it together.
Well, they were calling him a generational talent amidst the likes of Rose and Russ. So as perception would have it was either going to be amazing from the jump, or a bust. It doesn't help either that he is essentially Damian Lillard's replacement.
I think the "draft analysts" who called him an NBA ready point guard were just irresponsible and wrong. He will be a really good player but acting like he was an NBA ready point was ridiculous.
"It's easy to write off these criticisms as jumping the gun on a rookie only halfway through the year." Yes, that's because he's a rookie only halfway through the year. This is extremely premature and if you've actually been watching the games you would have noticed he has shown flashes of greatness already. Consistency will come with time. Not everyone is going to be Lebron and ready from the jump. NBA fans are so annoying and dramatic, give the kid a couple years before you write him off as a bust.
Its crazy how someone like scoot was crazy raw in middle / high achool and went to the the ignite for 2 years just to focus on basketball its not good atm but someone like shaedon sharpe who skipped college and went dam near straight nba is raw asf for his age. Levels to it.
😂 Man can we give him at least a couple years instead of 30 games before we call him a bust ? I mean this is just silly be patient bro…everyone ain’t Lebron or Shaq & dominates as soon as they in the league.
Maybe a follow up video on how you were wrong to call him a bust? Idk bout you but I see the potential. After the bucksgame this morning(i am from europe so the game was at 4 am for me) and the last games overall i feel like the guy is not a bust and can become great.
I can definitely see the G League generally being a valuable developmental path. I mean if you're gonna be a professional, it's probably more valuable to have experience playing with and against other professionals than college students (a couple of whom *might* turn pro). That's basically the standard path for pro athletes outside the US. The Ignite, though? Sure, you're playing against professionals, but you're not learning to work within a system like them, you're on a team where everyone want to play hero ball and coaches won't do much to discourage that.
Hernderson will be a spectecular player like Westbrook was. The more interesring question is if its a good idea building around him if you end up with something like Russ, which is a first or second round playoff exit as franchise player and dont work as number 2 or 3.
Y’all are tarded . He’s 19 years old on an ass rebuilding team . SH will be fine. I wasn’t even his biggest fan. But I think his floor will be a 15/10/5 guy and a great leader
"his first love of football" quote made me think he's gonna turn it around. Plus he's young.... I'm pretty sure Chauncey and other vet guards see the potential and will give some guidance. 2 yrs from now this will be a funny overreaction video! (i hope)
I would not give up on the kid yet as it seems like Ignite players need a few NBA seasons to learn the game. They lack basic IQ from AAU and shit HS coaching. It seems like going to college is far far better for their development as players, since college coaches don't accept stupid shit like the Ignite coaches. So many players learn to play after they reach the college game and I'd rather draft an upperclassman today in the lottery than an ignite project like Scoot.
At 6'2 the ceiling was the moon? In the nba? The top 5 best players 6'2 and under are Jerry West, John Stockton, Isiah Thomas (The pistons not the celtics. dont be a casual), Allen Iverson, Bob Cousy. Unfortunately it's not 1958 anymore and players like that just don't really exist in the modern nba. Any midget that exists in the modern nba right now I.E Donavan Mitchell or Trae young thrive off the three point line. Which obviously scoot henderson can't do. When it comes to building a championship roster around a midget you'll need to have an Anchor for them defensively. Usually having an elite anchor requires elite floor spacing which scoot can't provide. I genuinely think scoot's two biggest draw backs that are gonna prevent him from ever being a number 1 guy is his inability to shoot threes and his height.
Other than Kuminga who has been up and down the G League ignite program looks like a failure. Its better to go to College honestly for development or play abroad.
Bro u gotta give him time to develop he had 33points last night along with 7 rebounds 9 assists 3 steals. Almost every rookie is like this Tracy McGrady averaged 7 points in his first season Kobe 7 points in his first season then they both went on to average 32 points per game and Kobe 35 points per game so just give him time by like 2027 gonna be averaging like 27/5/9 who knows but jut give him time and watch.
My point is give him time. u didn’t have to say my paragraph was irrelevant because when you compare his 15 minutes to 36 minutes per game isn’t a major difference. It’s just my opinion
Mj,Wade and other guards came in without a jump shot but ended up with some of the best jumpshots and midrange shots and became first ballot Hall of famers and MJ well became the Goat Scoot got plenty of time to get a shooting coach in the summer and then he's super athletic and fast kinda reminds me of D-Wade Scoot is a baller and he will get it together.
People don’t seem to understand shit. This guy was the same guy who kept getting compared to wemby. Both went to shit teams and as you can see, HUGE difference in talent. They were never comparable. He might become better in the future. Probably next season after off-season. But the backlash is because of this.
Hard to say. Bust or effective NBA player with long career as second or third best guy on team. Never be an all star. I feel bad as he seems like a great person and has an amazing work ethic. Blazer fam here. He is young and we have seen radical changes before but I feel like in past Kobe and others showed their potential more. I don’t see it and hope to be wrong
G league ignite is failed product from the beginning. They hired a mediocre inexperienced coach to guide those young prospect? Hired a coach because he's black, not because he accomplishment. To develop you prospect, they should hired a mentor like calipati, pitino, coach K, rick barnes, dan hurley., etc.
Trying to label a player in his first year is foolish in and of itself. Labels must be earned over at least a few years. And even then it might be too early.
He was labeled a generational talent and they traded Dame for him so yeah bro most definitely disappointed and it’s too late bust if he doesn’t turn up next season complete bust
@@joshsmith3873he wanted to leave it’s not like they was trying to get younger and kick dame out he wanted to leave so why not take a projected generational guard
I think the G league is overrated honestly for these guys coming out of high school. There fundamentals and feel for the game is subpar outside of their talent and athletic abilities, they are lacking basketball IQ and fundamentals for the NBA level. A year or two at Duke, UConn, Kentucky or Kansas would have benefited J.Green, The Thompson Twins, Kuminga, Scoot, L. Miller etc
I feel like scoot will pick it up down the line and he was bad at the start of the season but definitely he’s improving and you can tell slowly picking up the NBA game
