Hi and welcome to episode 18 of my ES 335 guitar build series.
After building the routing jig in the last episode, this time I build the sled to hold the body while I run it through the router and finally get the binding channels cut.
I hope you enjoy the video, if so please consider subscribing using the link below.

Phewee. You did it Patrick. I was holding my breath with buttocks clenched tighter than a scotsman's fist!

Great job. You had me lost when you were building the lift and the jig but what a great idea and great vision from you

Thanks Jim, to be honest the lift wasn't my idea and the sled was a simplified version of another design but I did add a few of my own touches :)

I'm building a biding jig like this. Absolutely great.

It worked really well, if I were to change anything I'd find a bigger boss for the jig to ride on but other than that I'm pleased with it.

@@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams looking at yours and knowing the position of my wood vise. I think I'm going to make mine to where it attaches to the table surface via wood screws. Basically the same design though. I have a spare rotozip router that I'll use for this so it can just stay a one purpose router. Great idea on the bits as well. Binding bits are stupid expensive, especially from stew mac, so that is so helpful. Thanks again brother.

I've just seen that others have already written what I was just about to: I held my breath through that whole procedure! Another great video in this fantastic series! I'm looking forward to watching the rest

As Will Smith would say "I gotta get me one of those" and I have two linear rails with bearings that I ordered two short when I built my CNC machine (which I haven't learned how to use yet lol) so your ace piece of equipment is my next project. These videos just get better and better, you truly are a craftsman.

Well hopefully me holding my breath helped! I couldn't even imagine doing that operation repeatedly. Awesome job in the end and glad to see you smile at your results!

Thanks Philip, I think the collective breath holding definitely helped :)

It would be great if you made this jig out of some kind of transparent material (acrylic or plexiglass) so you could see what you are routing. Anyway, it's a great job.

Yes mate, totally agree. It's a bad enough job without having to do it blind. I think I'll trim the base down a bit before I use it again so I can see a bit more.

Brilliant stuff Patrick and probably much relief that such a bum-wobbly job is successfully out of the way ! Y’know, because of the symmetry I find the bearing marks quite aesthetically pleasing, but it will be interesting to see how you tackle them. Really enjoying this build.

Thanks mate, I was really pleased to get that job out of the way. Perhaps keep them in on the next one and call them a feature :)

I had the same bearing marks when putting a roundover on my tele. I sanded them out, bit of a pain.
@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams
@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams 2 года назад
It is a pain, I don't get them with 1/2 inch cutters but you can't always use one!
@paulsutherland6302

I have had that bearing mark when routing binding channels - I've always sanded them out, so I'm keen to see what you do to address them. Great job and the jig worked a treat.

Thanks Paul, I seem to only have this problem with 1/4 inch shaft bits, solution in the next video :)

Hi Patrick. Here we are again - I'm trawling your videos for tips to help myself along the way 😂 I'm going to be knocking up a binding jig fairly soon and know I'm going to struggle with the donut part. Out of interest did you ever think of anything more readily available than the bit of the ratchet screwdriver you used? I'm racking my brains and can't think of anything!
@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams
I can't think of anything off the top of my head however I have just got myself a 3D printer and I'm thinking of trying to make something a bit better than the screwdriver part. I'll keep you posted...

I Patrick Sorry to drag up and old post but would you happen to have an STL file for the donut bit you made? I would be eternally grateful if you did 😂

@@maxcowell4260 is that the one I made for the Rick build or the part on this jig?

@@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams sorry I was talking about the one you've 3d printed on the newer build, but I actually ended up cobbling one together form one of my kids toys 😂 Thanks all the same Patrick 🤘

binding should be fun..acetone or CA glue? really going to love how you finish this one?..

I have always used CA and always stick my fingers to the guitar and end up with a load of clean up. However after the stress I've been through dare I change routine!!!

I’m still terrified when routing those channels after so much work has been invested in a project. One slip is all it takes 😬
