When everyone is in the club having fun while King Shark is sitting in the van alone trying to listen to the music coming from the club but gives up and he gets sad which then made me feel sad for him. Now that's a good movie.
dare i say but i actually liked him more than MCU's Groot which is weird considering Groot had more movies to develop himself as a character and King Shark was mostly just a walking joke. Something about the little moments when he was all alone or when he was so happy to find similar fish friends and they ended up trying to eat him
It’s honestly very surprising how a walking joke generated some of the most sympathy from me. I absolutely adored him and felt a stab to the heart harder than Flag did when I thought those fish were gonna kill him.
Fun fact: When James Gunn was trying to name The Suicide Squad he added the The as a joke and the Warner Bros executives loved it so much they made it the name!
The number of times this movie made me yell out variations on "Don't you DARE kill off Nanaue" is a testament to the genuinely real stakes of the film and the likeability of its (giant shark) characters.
When I thought Peacemaker was gonna kill Cleo, it made me worry about *_both_* of them when Peacemaker was clearly supposed to be the ‘bad/wrong’ one in the situation and THAT is good character writing.
I really love how this movie finally gets what the mission for Suicide Squad should be, they’re not there to save the world and kill Starro, they’re just there doing government’s dirty work by covering up US government’s dirty secret in the past to avoid much more conflicts with outsiders and their own people, which lead to peacemaker and Flag’s disagreement which I thought is pretty damn compelling
Yeah when I think of Suicide Squad, I think of them storming a Russian base that is trying to bring back General Zod to disrupt America by killing Superman. Not.... as a contigency to kill superman incase he attacks the president.
It really annoyed the shit out of me lol, it was so jarring. They literally burned people alive and they were screaming. They shot loud special guns. And they weren't even hiding. They just walked in.
it for damn sure it is. I think just how likeable John Cena is also helped because he seems like an ok dude, albeit making people die for peace lmao so its a great juxtaposition and actually pretty scary once you really think about it. this invisible meatball of a human will take you out in one hit, glass chin or not.
The cinematography in this film really stuck out to me (especially compared to a lot of other superhero films). The title cards/“Chapters”, the opening shot of Savant’s reflection in the puddle, the fight scene reflected on Peacemaker’s helmet. Overall, this film was really solid all the way through.
I want to take a moment to shoutout the fight between Rick Flag and PM. One thing I absolutely loved about their fight was that it was clearly a fight to the death, and as a viewer I had no idea who was going to win (I didn’t know about the Peacemaker show). It was real tension in a superhero movie bc there was no guarantee that the good guy was going to make it. Pretty rare for a superhero movie and I commend it.
During the fight I honestly expected PM to die and the tv show would be a prequel that possibly ended with him getting arrested. End took me way off guard
It was such an awesome experience. I remember exactly when it hit me that I had no idea who was going to win, even knowing about the Peacemaker show. It was so refreshing.
@@DonkeyBoyVids I just read an article where James Gunn said the show will be Both a prequel AND a sequel. So my guess is it will be set after the movie but have moments set before possibly doing his origin and him getting arrested
I hadn't thought about how this movie is basically structured like one big comic arc, with each title card being a new issue. That changes how I think about this movie entirely. The movie felt like a love letter to the comics, and this just solidifies that feeling. It makes me think of that behind the scenes teaser from last year where Idris Elba was like "It's like a massive graphic novel come to life." or something. People say that all the time about whatever movie they're promoting, and usually when they do I roll my eyes. But my man really wasn't lying. That is exactly what it feels like.
Yeah especially having the original writer of the 1987 Suicide Squad series John Ostrander cameo in the film as a doctor implanting neck bombs. It really does feel like another arc of comics from that era.
i kinda want the character internal monologue to be brought into the movies. every comic has text bubbles of the character talking in their heads and ik that wont translate easily to a movie to have someone constantly talking but i feel like it could work for a Batman movie since theyre going more noir, like lean into the detective monologuing about the case as they go about solving it
@@lb2kxx yea the very last shot in the movie sort of reminded me of Guardians 2. Rocket shedding tear. Both endings paid off big time. Now a James Gunn staple.
My favorite moment was at the beginning when TDK started using his powers. I said “What the fuck?” My wife said “What the fuck?” And then, as if on queue, Harley said “What the fuck?” Pretty great
Now that you remind me of him, did we ever actually see him die? I remember them shooting his arms but I also remember during the opening credits where they show the government workers trading money, his picture is still lit up along with Harley’s.
Something that marks this film as great for me is how, even when I didn't laugh at the humor all the time, it didn't make me roll my eyes or take away from my enjoyment. I could always see where the film was going, and I don't mean that in a predictable manner, I just mean, 'oh, I can see what gunn is trying to do here'. While I didn't feel much of a gut punch when a character would die on screen, honestly, I think this sets a great standard for sequels. Because being from a prior film no longer guarantees safety. Also, loved the Taika Watiti cameo.
I was surprised by how much I cared about the characters by the end of the film. James Gunn simply did a fantastic job at making us care about some weirdos and somehow Rick Flag
He made us care about everyone and perfectly wrote them and decided how the story would go. Harley with her psycho yet innocent attitude and savage choices. Rick Flag with his leadership and love for his country. King Shark for his surprisingly innocent behavior, innocently idiotic behavior, and wanting love and friends. Bloodsport for his care and leadership. Ratcatcher for her sweetness and Sebastian. Polka Dot Mans hard to explain but him too. James Gunn did perfect
@@fatefps. I liked how we can see polka dot man develop over the course of the movie. He starts off timid and depressed, he gets to unwind more when they were partying undercover, he develops a bond with Milton, becomes more assertive and efficient with his polka dots by the third act culminating in an (almost) satisfying end to his arc.
Before BvS came out I had a conversation with some non comic fans about how Suicide Squad had the potential to be this much more interesting, wacky kind of movie that had a lot of potential. The series is known for just killing off random C-list characters on a whim, so I thought it could bring out some really odd characters and be just more indiscriminately violent than the Snyder series. This was the movie I was telling those people about. 5 years later it actually came out.
@@unhelpfulrevelations7989 no it wasn't. A Snyder version of this would have some weird shit about how the world NEEDS morally grey murderer to kill people on behalf of the government and it would never have a plot point about the US doing something wrong.
You know how this movie is good? Almost every comment is a praise to a different character or scene. That means so many this movie's roster was sufficiently fleshed out to be loved by the audience.
Yes, absolutely this. My fav was Ratcatcher 2, but each time I see someone praising Polkadot man, King Shark, Peacemaker, Flag or Bloodsport I'm happy because they did such a great job at fleshing out each character.
I want to add on to the discussion on how the licensed music adds so much to this movie. The scene where Harley escapes from the Corto Maltese prison with the Louis Primo song fits so well, but in a way that's not readily apparent. The song is about a gigolo (man supported by a wealthy woman, an extension of her) realizing that his life is ultimately worthless because there is no one out there that truly cares about him. It fits Harley because she was always an extension of the Joker, and without that, and with her essentially abandoning her humanity, she knows deep down she's going to die alone. The scene with her hugging Rick Flag after she realizes that he was trying to orchestrate her rescue works so well afterwards because even in her state of nihilistic giddiness, she sees someone who cares about her well being. And the song is jovial in its cynicism, like Harley is in the face of all the horror around her. Also that song is a fucking ditty and it's stuck in my head.
I didn't want to watch this because of the first Suicide Squad being complete dogshit, but I absolutely loved this movie. I'm not a huge comic book fan or anything like that, this movie is just really fucking fun to watch imo.
A huge part of why the first movie was dogshit was that the studio tried to make it a James Gunn movie in editing when they didn't film one....So they did the smart thing and snatched up James Gunn after he was cancelled for 5min and Marvel abandoned him.
Just looking at the shots in this video really surprised me how beautiful THE Suicide Squad looks; love the shot composition and the vividness of colors. Quite excited to see it!
I love this movie it’s probably one of the best comic book movies. It’s fresh, with great characters, story, pacing, and soundtrack. It was shot very well and it was funny but not over the top funny if that makes any sense. I just love the world this movie creates. I would recommend this film to anyone it’s so so good…10/10
Harley Quinn becoming the princess of a third world dictatorship is the funniest plot point I've ever seen in a super hero movie. I can't explain it beyond that, it just is.
Shark King really tugs at the heart strings, when I first saw him in trailers I was like oh another Killer Croc, then the second he said “Hand” in the meeting I fell in love.
Dude I never realized how every character was a satire of the main cast, you juxtapose them and it’s like a night and day difference in treatment of the characters and their situations.
I really wish that the MCU would do more innovative stuff like this and into the spider-verse, because those both are better than anything marvel has put out in a while.
I agree, tho I gotta add the concepts for all the Marvel shows so far have been dope but the execution was lacking especially WandaVision. It could've been on the level of this.
@@plasmman Wandavision had promise but just ended up being the normal MCU CGI finale and Loki was cool, but it also was very generic in the MCU and the only reason it’s regarded as being different is because it ended with big implications for the larger MCU
After seeing this film, I’ll probably boycott future Marvel properties. Marvel keeps pumping out the same exact cookie cutter content, and people still buy it for the hype, not for the actual content. TSS wasn’t perfect- but it was something original. And I respect that a whole lot more than playing it by the books 100% of the time. It’s a shame because characters like Spider-Man, Antman, the Hulk, and many more could have such an interesting / dynamic stories, but Disney would rather play it vanilla. Loki and Wandavision were SO close, but by the end of both series I wanted to die due to how boring / uneventful they were. Hopefully this makes Marvel step up their game, because I cannot take another boring ass story anymore.
The Suicide Squad was amazing. Laughed out loud multiple times and I agree, it did tug at my heartstrings every so often. An extremely stylish movie, the amazing sequences that James Gunn can pull off are amazing.
I like how the movie’s title is basically the first joke of the movie, it’s THE suicide squad because “ok we’re the REAL squad this time we’re probably not all gonna die”
I had zero expectations and put this on because I was bored and ran out of marvel stuff to watch. This was such a fresh take I loved it. The story, the characters, the pacing it all made sense. Idris Elba was used so much better here than in the MCU. I understand his character in the MCU is stoic so we never got to see how great of an actor he is. I loved every bit of this whacky out there movie. James Gunn knows how to make you care about D list characters like no one else.
I was strongly conflicted by this film. I loved a lot of it, but hated a lot of specific choices. Polkadot man's arc ending really disappointed me. OH and the Harley worship is a joke
Yup, I really don't like Harley Quinn in any of these movies. Can't tell if it's because the writing or Margot's portrayal, maybe both. She just acts like a super obnoxious loud high school girl in every scene, super unfunny.
I think the stealth in the camp scene works because everyone there is expecting to hear gun shots in case of an attack, so instead of being on high alert, they are more curious
I want to preface this by saying I watched this on hbo in my apartment so maybe that's what I'm missing, but I really didn't like this movie. I thought that almost all of the faults you pointed out in the first installment were super present here, minus the messed-up storyline. I didn't really care when anything happened to any of these characters. I don't know if it was the theatre's presence or that it was filmed better, but a lot of the humor and dialogue really brought me out of this movie... even the deaths at the end didn't do anything for me.
This movie was fantastic from beginning to end for me. I don't think I had a dull moment really. Plus, it's rewatchable! Rare for me and the superhero genre.
I’m glad they actually become friends in this movie, the first suicide squad told us that they were friends, but we never saw them act like they were. I’m glad they’re friendship builds up over the course of the movie
@@Queef_StormYes that’s the point, Bloodsport took the advice of Peacemaker and made even smaller bullets. He’s says as much when he walks over to him "How?" "Smaller bullets."
@@doctor0827 yeah i thought it was a good villian, I just feel like th should have had it floating or flying instead of standing like patrick, but ither than that he was a pretty good villian
This movie's biggest accomplishment was making me actually care about Rick Flag and his arc. I did not give a single crap about him in the first movie, and laughed at the infamous meme lines, but they completely inversed that in the sequel, and I loved it.
I have to agree. Rick Flag is not a character in the 2016 Suicide Squad. I was much more invested in his character in this one, and when Peacemaker plunged that shard into his heart I audibly yelped and realized that was it for Rick Flag… it was actually sad.
She also had a really cool sidekick named Katana. She got his back. She could cut you in half like mowing the lawn. He would advise not getting killed by her sword, it traps the sword of it's victims.
Sebastian was the best character. Man had the squads back and just wanted to be accepted and pulls through with an army of rat homies. Also he's a rat, enough said.
I really liked how each character looked. We had some typical modern hero outfits like Bloodsports, moody, dark, future-military style. Then we have Peacemaker who's in bright shorts and just a damn shirt with a chrome helmet, and it works! Polka Dot, Ratcather 2, the Shark, and even Flag all looked great and unique.
This was so refreshing to see, I also read the costume designer talking about how collaborative the process was with Gunn, that it felt more like making a play bc how involved the different departments were with eachother
Polkadot man honestly stole the show for me, everything about his character was just perfect. His comedic timing, his backstory, his acting, just so good
One of my favorite DC characters now, I'm more of a fan of obscure and unique characters rather then the same characters they always put to the forefront all the time. they should do more with this iteration of him.
*SPOILERS* I KNOW that's why I'm so sad he died at the end, he JUST became a superhero and he got fucking smushed. I feel like it's for shock value + killing him bc he was OP + his arc was kinda finished, but I honestly wish he lived bc he was so lovable :'(
@@mochafrappawhat YES ABSOLUTELY. his death was totally unnecessary and, although probably not intentional, feels apart of the "bury your gays" trope :(( i really loved his character and i hope they somehow bring him back in the sequel/spin off
If DC movies just had no consistent tone and were basically "let's just give this director this property and let them do whatever" I'd be so down for that
It obviously depends on the director/writer. For example, I'm 100% sure The Batman will be amazing, but I'm a bit worried about The Flash and Black Adam.
I’m getting so sick of hearing people say it was a failure, I know so many people who watched it on HBO Max over the weekend… no, it didn’t break box office records but who’s actually surprised? It’s a HARD R rated movie, and who’s going to go to a theater to watch something when you can watch it for free at home. It’s easily the best movie I’ve seen all year.
cant tell them any different tho, anyone who wanted this movie to fail or flat out didnt like it is using that as evidence the movie is trash doing the whole "hurr durr dc movie garbage" when movies like black widow are complete dookie despite making money. since when does a CB movie have to break records every single fucking time? it doesnt have to make a billion+ at box office either like its damn near cringe at this point
For the love of God, I hope DC takes this as a win despite the box office numbers. It's actually good! Not a movie you have to pretend was tolerable compared to the rest.
i mean it's obvious to anyone that this movie is very well appreciated with just a 5 min web search but this is WB so i kinda have to assume they usually speak the language of money
@@zacharyjackson1829 The ratings probably played a part. Also, BW is part of the MCU while TSS is a sequel to one of the worst superhero movies ever. But I do agree, this movie is far superior.
@Spade Considering SS has arguably the worst editing for a modern blockbuster movie and BoP having a series of skits disguised as a plot, I don't know how you could say that.
For me, the humor served less as to be laugh-out-loud hilarious and more to endear you to the characters more. It keeps a consistent levity to the scenes that’s really charming, while still feeling sincere. It’s not like the movie doesn’t take itself seriously, it’s that it’s just acknowledging that fact that these characters combined this premise is kinda inherently silly. That level of self-awareness keeps the characters grounded and helps the more heartfelt moments feel genuine. That’s how it was for me, anyways. Edit: although some parts were just legit fucking hilarious. Idris Elba’s delivery of, “Why the fuck are you in your underwear?” will always get me
I was in the cinema and some guys behind me laugh about everything, I honestly believe they were high. They made the movie 100% better with that contagious laughter.
That same thing happened to me in Black Widow but that movie wasn’t even that funny so it just became annoying when anytime anybody said ANYTHING the person behind me laughed.
In my honest opinion the characters in this movie seems more fleshed out except of the human villains, they weren't really as interesting except for the mad scientist and more specifically Starro because of how its got basically kidnapped, experimented for years and was blinded by rage and then when it died it kinda broke my heart a little when it said "I was happy.. floating in space.. staring at the stars.."
It's hard to re-watch the party scene because you can see that Peacemaker totally had fun with the squad. Ratcatcher thanking him for asking a beer for Sebastian highly contrasts him pointing a gun at her.
There’s also a line flag has at the bar where he says “this could be the last drink of our lives” or something along those lines. Didn’t mean much the first time but on rewatch realizing that flag was the one who says it hits different
It was clear to me that when he was pointing gun at her, it was hard for him, but he stood by his twisted moral code. Honestly, really good performance by John Cena
He also really didn't want to kill Flag either. He was broken by that decision but for him, his country is more important. He said so himself. "I'll kill any man, woman, and child to keep it"
Yeah I think that’s the point he thinks that if he breaks his moral code once he won’t achieve his goal and that’s really the aspect I’m interested in for the spin-off
@@idiotwithanopinion8082 _"I cherish peace with all my heart. I don’t care how many men, women, and children I need to kill to get it."_ Yeah... At first, that line just seems like a funny line. Then we get to the end, and it suddenly has weight.
I love how Gunn utilized Cena perfectly, showcasing his wit and charm and freakishly impossible strength, while hiding the weird tough guy face he does while acting. John, you're the toughest guy in the world, you don't need to do a fake tough guy stance.
This movie has some hilarious jokes. The team 1 chopper interactions are gold imo. "Your name, TDK. What does it stand for?" "What? Huh? It stands for me." "So your name is a bunch of letters." "All names are letters, dickhead."
Harley was just great in this movie! Her escape scene was also hysterical and just awesome... I think I might have fallen for her at that exact moment 😂

@@spicymeister The second I saw Bloodsport shoot him like 5 times and he was completely fine, I knew he wouldn’t die, simply because he _couldn’t._ King Shark is like the Hulk on steroids.
This movie actually made me really like Joel Kinnaman's Rick Flagg, a character that I found dull as dirt in the first film. For that accomplishment alone, it gets several additional points in my book.
Honestly after watching guardians 1 and 2 and then seeing the trailer for the suicide squad, I knew the reboot was gonna be good. James Gunn has honestly earned my trust in his films. He can write and direct. He's honestly perfected his craft. What he does in a two hour movie, other tv shows rarely even do in two seasons. The characters are relatable despite their "super hero" status. I'm interested in the story. Each scene is art in motion. So at this point I'm not surprised it's good. Honestly.
@@NhemLee honestly, James Gunn should really do R rated films. Not saying he should stop films like Guardians but the suicide squad showed us that James Gunn knows how to do gore as well comedy.

Americans will never understand how special it was to me, a portuguese, to see my home town (Porto) in one of the biggest movies of the year. Our portuguese actress (ratcatcher2) stole the show as well.
Starro's last line got me in tears. Just that line. That one passing line the henchman said before slowly panning to a giant alien starfish doing puppy eyes. Damn you James Gunn
That henchman was the general of the Corto Maltesian armed forces. When he saw that all was lost, he didn't bitch out but decided to die with his men. Pretty dignified death for a minor villain!
Starro was a victim too. They didn’t come to Earth with plans to invade, they were captured and tortured for 30 years by the US government. I’d be a bit pissed off too after that.
John Cena's performance is fantastic. It was so surprising for me to see Peacemaker actually have a character arc and Cena pulling it off flawlessly. And King Shark saying "Fake moustache!" makes me laugh out loud every time I think about it.
One thing I think you passed over that made this movie so great was its friendships. The team you go along with grow together and bond in their own ways which is awesome but explicitly the fact that Harley and Rick totally coulda had some shitty shoe horned romance and you could see it coming from a mile away but no. They were just true friends, and same for Rat Catcher and Bloodsports friendship just being so pure. I think it really helped make this such a great team and connect to the audience.
Don't forget the trio Peacemaker, Bloodsport, and Flag. They had some pretty good chemistry that it made me genuinely upset in the end when they were forced to fight each other
This movie feels like the film James Gunn has been building his career to making, it combines the oddball/outcasts dynamic and the humour therein with the gore and themes from his previous efforts Super and Slither. I'm really looking forward to future DC movies if they continue to just focus on being good and having little to no executive interference as this film did!
@@jjackson6082 The graphic moments of violence often played for laughs reminded me of slither, as did almost everything to do with Starro and the 'Zombies' at the end.

Compare this: “Mama says I can’t live with you because you kill people.” “Das not true das a lie” To them screaming at each other through telephones. dc movies have been making a comeback, and I think the reason for this is that warner bros have finally understood that limiting directors' and writers' creativity is a bad thing.
And that they need to stop chasing Marvel and do it their own way. They can’t be like marvel anyways, marvel is the way it is because of what they created and set up for the last decade, DC doesn’t have that so why bother try to be what it’s not and just be what it is.
