In this session I walk you through the trick to becoming flexible for non-flexible people. My flexibility method is simple. It's split into 3 parts (secrets) that explain the why, what and how of building flexibility - even if you don't come from a dance or gymnastics background (which I never did).
Secret #1: Why it's so difficult
Secret #2: What we need to do
Secret #3: How we need to apply secret #2
Here’s the order I recommend you work in to get the most out of this video:
1. Watch from start to finish - Take your time to fully understand each piece of information. This might be the first time you've learnt anything, anatomy-wise, so it can take a couple of watches, and re-watches for it to go in.
2. Apply it to your practice - Challenge yourself by seeing how much you've learned and whether or not it's actually gone in. This is the first step to applying the techniques I talk about at the end of the video.
For people who love to read (myself included 🙋‍♀️) I condensed all of this information into a guide that can be downloaded here: www.charliefollows.com/flexib...
I hope this video helps you learn more about your body and how you can work with it to build flexibility.

I've often asked myself "how am I supposed to relax now?!", with every video where this sentence came up, did it automatically the whole time with strenght and then gave up the habit, because of the sentence relax :D It's so much easier with power, it's good that I discovered the video so early. Thanks

Great advice! I’ve always thought that when stretching I should not be engaging muscles. In yoga classes they always tell you to relax and let go in order to stretch. Thanks Charlie🙏🌸

I have been having trouble with flexibility, I will incorporate these tactics into my stretching routine, I am a much older male in my 60s, I do not hold out much hope but any gains will be a win in my overall fitness, one thing I do have going for me is consistency in trying, thank you for the advice.
@CharlieFollows

Hey Terry I always say consistency goes further than anything else. You can do a long practice once a week but a short practice a few times a week is much more effective, even if it's just 20 minutes. I hope this video gave you some ideas on what you can do. If you have any questions just let me know.

great advise - I will endevour to make my stretching "active" - especially helpful for my tight, niggly hamstrings - menopausal changes

Despite doing yoga for years I'd never considered why the stretch is so much better with some strength applied. I'll now be more mindful of this in my practice. Excellent explanation, and presentation. Thank you Charlie 👍

Flexibility tricks won't work if there is compression. A bone hitting another bone, will limit the range of movement. Streching won't help if your bone anatomy limits your flexibility. No tricks around this. People will just hurt themselves if they keep on trying and forcing themselves into postures... I have been doing yoga for years... Some postures will never be possible for my body. Does not matter, still having fun with yoga.

true, its according to our body anatomy.

If you bend your knees a little and then can touch the toes without a problem, then it's not your bones which are the problem.

Hi Charlie ! I ran across the flexibility video today ! I also was taken aback by kino’s practice . I subsequently did a 2 week intensive with her . I followed with going to india to practice with Sharath jois after diving into a Ashtanga practice for several years . I was very athletic back in the day ! Hard core skier a lot of tennis . I sustained a number of injuries leading to 4 joint replacements . Began practicing yoga in my very early 20’s . I am now an old dog lol . I have always been flexible probably to a fault . Even though I have a science background I never realized how important the balance is between flexibility and strength in more recent years . I have moved away from Ashtanga and I am exploring classes with you now . However my practice has plateaued. Loved all of your advice and hoping you have a few suggestions . Frustrated thank you for all that you do ! I can’t believe you have only been practicing since 2017 wow ! ❤❤❤

Hello Jayne it is great to hear from you and get to know more about your practice history. I have reached many plateaus over the years and the best way I’ve found to get to the next step is to find new ways of doing the poses you are already doing (a harder variation let’s say). For example down dog a pose we all dog - I like to challenge my balance and body awareness by hovering opposite hand and foot. Another pose - pigeon pose (which can be very passive) I like to bend the back leg and reach my arms back to catch my feet for an active variation. These are just some examples but I find a plateau although annoying can actually be a great place to reinvigorate your practice by exploring new ways of doing the pose. I hope this helps you

This is a great explanation. Do u have any class videos where u teach isometric stretches? If not, is it possible to have such class videos in near future so that we can build flexibility?
@CharlieFollows
@CharlieFollows 9 месяцев назад
Hey thank you so much for saying. A lot of my classes include isometric stretches, I don't have a class that's solely dedicated to them but I could definitely do one as I think a lot of people would benefit from a class like this.
