The right to keep and bear arms has always been central to the American identity. The American Revolution was sparked by British attempts to confiscate guns. After the Civil War, America changed the Constitution to defeat America's first gun control organization, the Ku Klux Klan. When Hitler and Stalin demonstrated how gun registration paves the way for gun confiscation which paves the way for genocide, Americans resolved to make sure it never happens here.
Gun control is not an issue of left vs. right, or urban vs. rural. Liberal icons such as Hubert Humphrey and Eleanor Roosevelt recognized the right to arms as fundamental to preventing large-scale tyranny by criminal governments, and small-scale tyranny by ordinary criminals. Barack Obama's gun control program is founded on disinformation, and is a direct assault on the Constitution.

Wow! So EVERY TIME a group has tried to commit genocide or oppress another group, they try to take the victims weapons away first... That so interesting. I would never have guessed! There must be some deep and profound connection there that I've previously missed...

yes yes in germany there were a gun control law against weapon too before the killed the jews. NOT They brought children to use in weapons, they produced many weapons as you have it, they supported the arming of civilians as ye did it and they had huge expenditure for Army, as you have it. Yes, but if you're going against weapons at civilians and military, it is in reality a suppression and quite different from the peaceful people in the 3rd Reich....

ApolloMars1617 Where's your proof? During the 1930's Germany started reclaiming much of it's guns to go into military from citizens? In Belarus Russia had a mass armament of civilians to stop German's from advancing it didn't stop them but it cause such a rucuss that German's were forced to keep 2-3 million troops stationed in Belarus to fight off Partisans and to reclaim land that Partisans had taken. Also for that reason on 1941-4 any civilian in Belarus caught with a gun was executed by German's 12% of those executed were German citizens. The Germans did strip their citizens from guns sometimes even killed them for having it.

their were not german citizens. they were paramilitary troops in a occupied province or illegal immigrants in belarus or slavs who want to be germans (big problem in ukraine too) and the civilians in belarus were occupied people. it wasnt the greatgerman empire and im speaking more about the education of german citizens in germany for the german army. HJ etc. every german boy in puberty knowed the function of 2-3 different maschine guns. all standart weponds, even Panzerfäuste and flacs. it was the standart education for every KID in school!

tayz syawed That's why guns are bad...because with guns you usually kill people...and in war a gun would actually use a rational purpose of self-defense that is not covered by the government anymore... + When did the leninists and marxists try to disarm the population during their revolution? When did the NSDAP during their way to overtaking the government? Do you even know that GUNS make killing easy because guns are made for killing? Explain to me how the cause of sth. or sty. that makes anything worse can be of benefit...when was the last time you saw a firefighter fighting fire by fire?

I hate that people keep comparing the UK to America. Back when the UK and America had the same gun control, America's violent crime rate was more than 10 times higher than the UK's. Since the gun, the UK's has gone considerably up while America's has stayed relatively stagnant. In comparison, the UK's violent crime rate shot up.

You know, I have difficulty taking the "to defend against tyranny" position seriously when nobody stands up when the 1st amendment rights get trampled... nor the 4th, 6th, 7th, 8th... nor when the government decided it was okay for the government to decide when it can execute its citizens on foreign soil... Why is the line drawn only at the 2nd amendment? After they've taken everything else, are you even going to bother to stand up when they come for your guns, too?
@Lt_Voss
@Lt_Voss 11 лет назад
The problem I think is that all of these amendments are coming under attack in a relatively quick and short span of time (ten or twenty years for the majority). The amendment that _has_ to be prioritised when it comes to this is the 2nd amendment because without it, we cannot hope to defend and repair the others. That's my opinion, at least.

Why must we take away a freedom to be safe? Those who obtain guns and use them to harm the innocent are not allowed by-law to even own them!, if anything the enforcement of the already established laws should be the main concern, it is easier to ban something and suppress the problem rather than find a solution that satisfies both parties. The point of the 2 stances is so we do not go right or left, so we don't go one extreme or the other, our leaders are supposed to compromise and understand each other. ALSO, banning guns wont get rid of the millions of firearms in the United States, it will just make them more valuable and a means of income for gangs and cartels, the true causes of violence and crime in the big cities and the people would be defenseless. those who want guns to harm others and do not abide by the law WILL get them. One defense against terrorism and the rouge psychopath gun man is the ownership of guns by civilians, this is why in the United States Schools and movie Theaters are the prime target, they are the only places someone couldn't carry a gun and the people are defenseless, in Europe meanwhile a gunman could walk into a concert hall and butcher hundreds before police could arrive, everywhere is a possible target. The police, can not be there the moment a crime happens, you are alone, armed or not (your choice) for 9-11 minutes while a criminal (most likely armed) can harm you or your family, this is the response times in cities, so it can be worse for those in rural areas. The same people who want gun control also want the Police force to be disarmed, armor and rifles taken, power reduced, but also use them as their main support in gun control, saying they are the ones who defend them and make guns unnecessary. But don't understand that it will jeopardize the security of the nation. Those who are against guns do even know what a gun is, have never touched one, or just have a illogical fear of them. Guns are a freedom many enjoy and a fraction of a hundredth of a percent abuse. They both take and save lives, they are used by both the criminal and the Victim, they bring food to the family of the hunter and take the father from a family, they are a part of society, if we want them or not, and shunning them will not eliminate the harm they can bring. So weigh the advantages and disadvatages, do you believe we should decide today to create a people that fear and misunderstand guns, a nation living in fear of terrorist attacks, of criminals and rouge psychopaths, or should we work together to insure this right remains, that all people are safe or have the opportunity to be against those who wish to do them harm, to have a police force that is armed and ready for any situation in an age of rapid change, threats ever growing. A people with a deep pride inf their government, their rights, and a respect for the Law Enforcement and other Emergency Responders, and the Armed forces that work to protect them, even if they are imperfect, but work towards perfection, The lives of men should be dictated by the decisions they make free rather than decisions forced upon them from above.

The part about China is delusional. Weapon control towards the freemen and peasants has always been a policy both in prosperous times and in difficult times, while lords maintaining their private armies. It's a simple question of governmental capability. The worst times of Mao actually seen large scale weapon proliferation and quasi-military involvement in civilian affairs. Mao manipulated these armed little men to bypass administrative procedures and achieve his own political goal. And massive holocausts happened here and there in China like...always. Sometimes taken the form of punitive pillage caused - contrary to what you believe - by futile yet fierce resistance. The worst record is probably during Mongol and Qing conquest. I'm simply suggesting the irrelevance between gun control and humanitarian crisis here in China, to me it's more like a family tradition: we've been accustomed to human rights negligence. I think you should keep this issue purely American to prevent any further confusion.
@TheDamiandemos

Lex Parsimoniae Sorry, not buying it.Ever seen the RU-vid video about the Chinese repeating crossbow, the chukunu?The video says every peasant household had one. It was very low-powered but poison could be put on the tips of the arrows to give the weapon a little more, let's say zing.And haven't there been numerous rebellions in Chinese history, with at least some of these having peasant armies playing a significant role?There's always been a sense among the Chinese that the Emperor can and should be replaced by an uprising if need be.I'm not saying Chinese history hasn't seen an enormous amount of tragedy of all kinds. or that it was freedom city for most of the population, but you have got it badly wrong.About the proliferation of weapons in Mao's time, you miss the point. Of course there were all sorts of organizations whose members were armed, but they were all govt. organizations in one form or another. To say the least, is not the same as allowing families and individuals to defend themselves.What about a peasant with a chukunu to protect his own family in Emperor Mao's time? Or a group of peasants banding together to defend themselves in the Peasant's State?I wonder how that went down.
@ancylostomiasis
@ancylostomiasis 9 лет назад
TheDamiandemos Right, whatever. Seems you know China better than I do. I now know how you right-wingers bend reality to fit your political agenda. Suit yourself. My suggestion is simple: no matter how the people are armed they can't beat the nuclear wielding, armed-to-the-teeth super state by a live-fire excercise, the same applies to you Americans also. If you love guns, go love it as you please but don't take this armed resistence for liberty shit to me as an excuse. End of story.
@TheDamiandemos
@TheDamiandemos 9 лет назад
Lex Parsimoniae What's particularly right-wing about wanting ordinary people to have access to weapons to defend themselves with or overthoriw their govt. if need be? I'd also like to know why you shifted ground from arguing that guns are dangerous to arguing that guns are irrelevant to the military might of the US or similarly-endowed govts. If they were so irrelevant the govt. wouldn't be wanting to control them and they wouldn't be doing their best to convince the public that they're dangerous without this control.
@ancylostomiasis
@ancylostomiasis 9 лет назад
TheDamiandemos Take a look at my original post, that's always been my position. This is the atomic age, handheld weapon has nothing to do with defending your freedom. Admit it, you love guns simply because you love them, otherwise you'd demand the right to homeown nuclear weapons. And since America is still a democracy, would you deny there's even the slightest possiblity than some tiny little Americans actually WANTED their government to protect them from the proliferation of small arms? I'm always surprised at your kind of gun lovers whom don't seem to mind the government's insidious scrapping of your freedom of expression, freedom from harm, freedom from fear, freedom from hunger and freedom of assembly yet when they demand your weapons everyone loses his mind. I thought your founding fathers require you to held onto your weapons to defend those freedoms, not vice versa. And since there's nothing left to defend, do you think those toys you have really matters?
@TheDamiandemos
@TheDamiandemos 9 лет назад
Lex Parsimoniae The fact that it was always you position is irrelevant to my criticism I was pointing out the inconsistency of saying how dangerous guns in civilian hands are and then saying the very same people who want to control these guns are also completely unworried about their military use against them. You think America is still a democracy. Good luck with that, especially with the electronic voting machines and the association between the companies that make them and Washington politicians who promote them-who've been mostly Republicans, in case you thought I was only against the Democrats. You wrote: *And since America is still a democracy, would you deny there's even the slightest possiblity than some tiny little Americans actually WANTED their government to protect them from the proliferation of small arms?* Not for one second did I claim there wasn't a section of the public that want gun control. You wrote: *I'm always surprised at your kind of gun lovers whom don't seem to mind the government's insidious scrapping of your freedom of expression, freedom from harm, freedom from fear, freedom from hunger and freedom of assembly yet when they demand your weapons everyone loses his mind.* Epic fail. You make too many assumptions and I and many other "gun nuts" are very concerned about these things. You wrote: *And since there's nothing left to defend, do you think those toys you have really matters?* I do not understand this clearly enough to know whether I agree with you or not.

what seems to be lost on many Americans is that personal freedoms encroach on the freedoms of other people. Drinking and driving, smoking in public, playing loud music. We accept a certain amount of risk of misuse or accidental injury with things like cars and knives because they have essential every day uses. In a civilized country there really isn't a need for guns in many situations. It's not a case of banning gun ownership, more of being a bit more sensible about it. How can it be argued that an ak47 is necessary, and why are weapons necessary in urban areas?
@nateypecks
@nateypecks 8 лет назад
+Charlie Milroy Why are weapons necessary in urban areas? Because bad people with guns want to use them to take things that don't belong to them - witness Chicago, St. Louis, Oakland, Detroit, Baltimore, DC, etc. Why is an AK-47 necessary? Multiple attackers. It usually takes more than one round to stop an assailant.
@charliemilroy6497
@charliemilroy6497 8 лет назад
nateypecks Are you expecting to be attacked by an army? An AK-47 seems excessive. In my reality there is no need for a gun, I'm sorry if you live in such a dangerous place that they are necessary. I am quite lucky to live where I live and never being in fear for my life.
@nateypecks
@nateypecks 8 лет назад
Charlie Milroy Um... When you say AK 47 are you talking about the assault rifle or the semi-auto civilian version? There are literally hundreds of cases where groups of assailants have invaded a home or attacked a single individual. It's a question of probability and desire - I want to have a chance to stop an 'army' trying to hurt my family, no matter how remote the probability; you don't. Your question was about why these rifles are necessary, I gave you a perfectly valid reason and you balk that it's not realistic. Methinks you would not agree even as a group of thugs pounded your skull to pieces with clubs.
@charliemilroy6497
@charliemilroy6497 8 лет назад
I was thinking about the assault rifle. You'd be surprised if you thought about how people tend not to stray far the areas that they live and work in. I've spent quite a lot of time in America and never had to fear for my safety. Anyway, I live in Europe in a very safe country, so where I live guns could only make things more dangerous.
@nateypecks
@nateypecks 8 лет назад
Charlie Milroy I don't have to fear for my safety either, crime has never been more rare across the world generally; you know what they say about failing to plan? "Plan to fail" - I'll keep my natural right to self defense for that reason and any other I can think of.

You know that in Nazi-Germany there actually would have been enough people to stop Hitler and not he absence of gun but the indifference of the people until the NSDAP was too powerful tos top it were reasons for it's reign. Oh no a gun that fire 120 per minute. A lot people I met who own high class weapons like to go to the shooting range. They also teach safety classes and root cause analyze to improve on safety. The better question is do you support a law to eliminate private ownership. Every law is a raised gun and your better not even going there. Only a very few own these kind of high power guns and by making them illegal your creating more criminals. We already have laws against violence, murder and robbery; do think creating new ban will stop that?

Xavier Duncan In a few years, 3D printing will change that. I meet few people who taken machine shop class in high school who can rework rework gun parts.I view it as property rights, having the ability to change, mod or create your own personal property. Besides with the internet, information is pretty easy to get or new skills. As for your police ban, I would tale you a tail when North Hollywood Shootout, a group of gun men fire in a fire against the cops armed with handguns, but the robbers had Ak 47 with armor piercing bullet and heavy body armor. The only reason the cops were able to stop them was a local Gun store owner provided then weapons and ammo.I don't believe the gov has monopoly on morality and force. I recall in AZ, my friend home was broken into by a group of armed thugs (with handguns), so he put his wife in the bathtub with their daughter and got his machine gun able to repel them away and shot one in arm( he was a convicted sexual offender). You can bring the argument of saving lives, but we don't push ending military actions, execution or police violence. Then you bring up a limit for limit sake, but why do I have to surrender a liberty I already have. You give them an inch and they end up taking a mile.

To move to a different topic, if you see the Baltimore riots and protest, people were looting and burning down houses. During the LA riots, a group of well arm men (koreans) stood watch with guns, machine guns and shotguns and they protected their property.The reason the cops are more militarized is because government has grown and the laws have expanded. The drug war has a direct effect, they created a black market and a powerful cartel. The more laws, the more corrupt the state is.

Xavier Duncan Whether is a war on drug, terrorism or poverty the government uses it to inflate itself. They consficate, collect tax, property in order to pay for there guns, tanks and helicopter.I made a sure to point out a difference between non violence and violence.We can look at our gov now,it has become so corrupt and they pass more bs laws. I was talking about government corruption, not private entities. Look at North Korea, they have so many laws, but we all know it corrupt and the people suffer.I'm a libertarian, I believe in liberty, freedom and property right(also self ownership). People are crying for more government, but they don't know that the root cause.

Australia is a major problem for your rhetoric. They instituted incredibly restrictive gun laws (including bans and buybacks), yet the rise of tyrannical government, genocide, crime, etc that gun advocates claim inevitably follows such moves has failed to materialize. Several of the recently proposed gun control laws in the US are really just moves to try and actually enforce the restrictions already on the books (closing gun show and online sale loopholes, etc). Also, gun ownership is no longer a check on tyrannical government, unless you really think rifles and handguns vs drones and missiles is a fair fight.
@ronin10bt

Tell that to the people in Vietnam. Oh, and there is plenty of time for people down the road to take Australia in that direction, no matter how good the intentions of the current government are.

whoisjohngalt11 That just brings us back the second point made in the OP: what good would rifles and handguns really be to keep in check a tyrannical gov't that controls "the most powerful military...in the world"?
@whoisjohngalt11
@whoisjohngalt11 9 лет назад
ArcanaKnight It's better than knives and sticks. Wars of attrition have been fought with less, but the point is certainly valid. That being said, unless the US government was willing to kill it's own citizens en masse with bombs and WMDs, 10 million armed citizens against those who would remain loyal in the military(probably a low percentage) would be overwhelming enough to at least put up a fight. The Mujahideen were able to resist the Soviets in Afghanistan and the Taliban put up a significant fight against us there. They are not armed with much more than that.

The United States has a higher rate of violence, partly because large parts of the country were in a state of anarchy until the 20th century. People could not count on the government to protect them. The cliché of the cowboy movies is that the nearest sheriff is 200 miles away, so you have to protect yourself with your six-shooter. When governments did arrive, people were reluctant to hand over their self-protection. And because the first government in America was a democracy, people were able to impose their wishes. In European countries, first the government disarmed the people and exerted its control many hundred years ago. Then the people democratized the government, but by then the government had already established control.

Nifty art work, The message is not clear however. Are you for or against gun control? You seem to suggest that gun control would be the precursor to genocide. This is too simplistic an argument. There are loads of examples of modern countries with gun control (my own included, Ireland) which have strict gun control laws already in place and have not resorted to any form of mass murder of the general population. Quite the opposite in fact, with even our police force going about their daily duties without firearms.

i disagree the u.s. is "destined" to become like europe. although there's nothing to say it is impossible. the reason i disagree is because the very foundation of our nation differs from that of any euro country in that our power stems from the people and trickles down to local then federal govmnt. we the people are sovereign. but, real efforts have been made to turn our system on its head and it's because americans have been getting lazy that statists have been successful.

Abraham golden the biggest problem with liberalism is that they want absolute power to force their version of everything on everyone. If we actually honored the 10th amendment it really wouldn't matter who won a national election for most things. The national government shouldn't be regulating guns at all. It, like most things, should be a state issue. Otherwise we'll keep bouncing back and forth in 4 year increments hoping one side gets a slim majority to ram what we want down the others throats just like obamacare. You want that, do it in your state and leave the 150 million of us who didn't want it and didn't vote for it alone.

ironcityblue You've got a lot of crazy shitheads on the left, just like you've got crazy shitheads on the right. The diffrence is that, for the longest time, no one wanted to call them out on it, and that's what got us President Trump. Becuase Hillary wanted to jump onto the identity politics train while he decide to talk about shit everyone cares about. And might I remind you of the Article of Confederation? That's what you get with a weak central government. And small and weak go hand in hand. There's a reason we have a constitution now.
@ironcityblue
@ironcityblue 7 лет назад
Abraham golden the 10th amendment "trumps" the lamentation of the articles of confederation argument. It's in there for a reason. The federal government was supposed to be strong, but only for the FEW things it was tasked with. It was never the intent to have a leviathan central authority that dominates every aspect of our lives besides the local design of license plates. States were always supposed to be far more independent than they are now, even with a strong 14th amendment. Yet the left will never stop trying to force their will on the rest of the country, sadly thinking we live in a "democracy" which we absolutely do not. If they'd leave us alone (other than their FEW legitimate responsibilities, which ironically they do a poor job of like securing our borders and protecting the integrity of our money etc) we'd all be better off.

Some of your examples in this video are ridiculous. Trying to discredit gun control by using the example of the KKK is like trying to discredit bans on smoking because of the Nazi's (they were one of the first groups to see smoking negative side effects and banned it). I also find it strange that you don't really go into detail about the many other countries who have adopted gun control and for whom it has worked, probably because it'll show that the cases you describe are minorities in history

Hire snipers, poisoners, surgeons claming they did there best to save the (gun owning)patient, ect, ect, ect. Remember we the people fund this government to have the power to do what ever it wants and get away with it. Common sense will keep people from having nuks - ak_47s or the like but the Government claims semi-auto that look like military weapons are assualt weapons. If they want to control guns/arms then maybe they should quit selling them to our enemy.

I want to hear both sides. ill consider opinions from both sides. also: if a government wanted to commence a hostile takeover, they would do it, and you would be powerless to stop it. your AR-15 wont stand up to a tank, plane, artillery shell, toxic gas, rockets, bombs, ships, armor, minigun, helicopter, jeep, or anything else that they have at their disposable.

To be honest you are the one being paranoid though. Rather have a gun and not need it than to need a gun and not have it. Also I find that many Americans are scared shitless of their government while the governments in most of the rest of the world fear the people they are ruling. Why do you fear your government? Citizens can have way more power than their government, besides the government needs its citizens to be able to have an army. Remember disarming law abiding citizens will only leave them defenseless against armed criminals and this is not some far fetched statement there are some stats to back it up. Sometime ago Australia had such a disarming of citizens only to see the number of armed robberies rise by 300% in some towns.

>.> There is no such thing as an assault rifle. It's common nomenclature that fails to understand what guns actually are. There are automatic and semi-automatic weapons. Americans are not allowed to own automatic weapons without a special permit that closely monitors them and semi-automatic weapons are effectively pistols shaped like automatic weapons. Even then there are many nations like that beacon of gun violence Switzerland where there isn't any gun control period and you can freely own automatic weapons.

Gun control worked in Australia. People should require a licence and be able to pass a basic test before having the right to a firearm. Guns shouldn't be blindly sold to idiots and/or criminals. Background checks should be done before the sale of firearms. If you're not a criminal and/or completely stupid you should be able to own a gun. Which means that about 50% of Americans should not be allowed guns. But if gun control was run by the US government it would be a complete mess, like everything they do.
@SirBroadsword
@SirBroadsword 10 лет назад
If you outlaw guns, only outlaws will carry guns. However, when the founding fathers referred to a "right to bear arms", I don't they were thinking of AK 47s. All that needs to happen is that someone in America needs to determine EXACTLY, and for all time, what KIND of arms are being referred to when the term "right to bear arms" is used. After all, not even the most fervent NRA member would argue that civilians should freely buying and selling stinger missiles, so clearly there must be some distinction as to exactly what TYPE of "arms" are being referred to SOMEWHERE... it's just a question of determining where. For me, I think civilians have no need whatsoever for fully automatic weapons, but that's just my opinion.

I am Irish and coming from a country with very few guns and even a police forces that is mainly unarmed. I find this video very confusing. The counties listed that went through mass genocide were all taken over by dictators and not 1st world country democracies. After world war II most European countries enacted resignation and requirement to hold a license to own a gun. Even Australia got their ass in gear after a mass shooting. I am confused about why having a license to hold a gun is an attack on the 2nd amendment rights? I am not against anyone owning a gun(s), but resignation & license(like driving a car) ensures that they know rules and can operate safely.

+Knight Artorias the Abysswalker I hear ya and I agree its not like any kind of Gun Control is going to stop 100% of Crime and of course its going to cost money(alot), but that is not why I am confused why there is no resignation or licenses. License should show the kind of weapon you can use, from sporting rifles, to hand guns, to military grade weapons. There should be a line where person can not buy/have a military grade weapon without training. Like we wouldn't want a newly passed driver jumping from his 2 litre Mazda to 16 wheeler truck. Its my understanding that there are as many guns as cars in the US and both can kill in the wrong hands. That is why there should be equal amount of laws governing them both. Resignation or licenses can do so much more to protect innocent people, by keeping Weapons away from people who are no fit to have or operate

There were no gun laws in Mao's China lol. That came with Deng Xiaoping's reversion to a state capitalist market economy post 1976. Furthermore I can only assume "Soviet-Occupied Poland" is referring to the Katyn massacre which was, by Goebbels' own admission, carried out by the Nazis.
