Looking back I can see why Namond made it out while his friends didn't. They made it clear that Michael didn't trust anyone especially the adults, Dukie had no stable support system neither did Randy who was chewed up by the system. Namond had Colvin who gave a enough of a damn about him that he went to his father an infamous hitman because his mother cared more about money than her son's wellbeing. And let's not forget Michael slapped him out of a fantasy.

That's the thing about the Wire, it's never about who deserves it but how their individual choices, societal pressures and just plain luck shapes everyone. What made the Wire such an amazing show was not just the gritty realism it packed, but its unpredictability. The kid who seemed most likely like a product of the game and had the smallest chance of making it out, was the kid who actually did. Kids like Michael, who we thought were smart enough to not turn to a criminal life fell into those ranks, and Dukie who seemed to have the best chance of actually escaping the horrors of Baltimore, ended up turning to a lifestyle similar to that of Bubbles. While its heartbreaking to see, and so god damn depressing, it shows that this is something that happens in those neighborhoods. No happy endings, everything goes to shit. We all fall down
@anthonyanderson9303
@anthonyanderson9303 8 лет назад
+™ ™ Whoa time out. How Dukie have the best chance of escaping the horrors of Baltimore? Do you not remember his home life situation? He was basically homeless. No parents, no guidance, living in poverty and drugs. He was the longest shot of the kids to make it out. As for Michael, he got trapped in the game. Remember his home life wasn't some picnic either. His mother was a crackhead and his stepfather molested him. In his eyes he had no choice but to go to the streets. School wasn't going to do it for him, not in the short term. And then there's Randy. Man oh man did he catch a tough break. Foster man hospitalized, labeled a snitch in the hood and sent back to a group home which might as well be juvenile detention. It was bleak for all these kids. Namond made it out on pure luck of finding an adult who cared enough about him (Colvin).

I actually think that the show portrays essentially the theme that those with the best home life have the best chance. Namond's mother wanted him to be a Soldier to honour Wee-Bey whom she clearly loved. Thing is Namond never had it in him and likely in large part because Wee-Bey managed to get to a level where he provided for his family. Maybe they lived in the Hood but they were not poor. Brianna cut a sizeable cheque for Wee-Bey's family every month and because of this Namond always has everything he needs and the coolest sneakers and clothes etc. as well. Wee-Bey was a dangerous soldier in part because he grew up 'Hungry'. For him climbing the ranks in The Game was the only way up but Namond was never hungry in the same way. Despite appearances and expectations, he was actually privileged. Up until the moment he became a teenager and Delona started trying to mold him into a Soldier he had lived a life that might not have been to far from what a middle-class kid in the suburbs might have experienced.
@JeremyMacDonald1973
@JeremyMacDonald1973 7 лет назад
I certainly think you're right that Namond narrowly missed ending up in The Game and I definitely agree that if he had he'd soon be dead. So Namond was lucky to find Colvin who saw his potential and was willing to go to bat for him and save him from the path his parents were sending him down. On the other hand Namond, partly because he was a smart kid, and partly because he was essentially privileged, was in a position to be able to grasp that opportunity when it crossed his path. Dukie and Micheal both had people outside of the Game try and reach out to them. Prezbo in Dukie's case and...err...what was the Boxing coaches name? He tried to reach out to Micheal. Both Micheal and Dukie were unable to take the help that was offered in large part because of their backgrounds. Micheal felt he needed his Step Father dead and Dukie tried to find a job but of course failed and had to find another means of survival. It is possible that Dukie really did have an out. Maybe if he had gone to Prezbo with his situation Prezbo might have been able to find him more support - not even sure if that would have worked. Presumably, Prezbo was willing to help but likely not to the point of taking him in. If Dukie had come from a more privileged background just maybe Prezbo considers taking him in. Note that Namond goes to Colvin's home and is able to win over Colvin's wife with his well-mannered behaviour. Namond easily adapts to Colvin's middle class life style in a way that Micheal and Dukie probably can't do because Namond has essentially been living an alternative version of a middle class life style.

Desmond Logan but Namond had a father in his life. He was in jail but still a very major influence on him. Stop it. Single parent homes isn't the end all be all for these problems. Look at Michael being molested by his stepfather. That wasn't a single parent household. It's way deeper than that. Lots of these kids have both parents around and still succumb. Stop that single parent babble bs. That may be the case sometimes but Black men are not the most absentee fathers, statistically. There's psychological conditions that go into it as well. It's all about being FIT enough to even take care of a child in the first place, which a lot of these adults ARE NOT, as we see with Namond's lazy, self-indulgent mother. As well as Brianna Barksdale with how she raised D'Angelo (he also had Avon as a father figure, of sorts, and both weren't the best influences). Dukie's mother AND father were together and got faded all the time to the point of completely neglecting and eventually abandoning their child.

@hamsterdam92

I'm probably the only Wire fan in the world who's favorite Boy of Summer is Namond. Yes, he was a douche for most of season 4, but think about the position he was in. He was expected by his parents to be built for the streets, so he was forced to create the illusion that he was all that. The very first time we see him we know he's not interested in being a gangster. More than Mike, Randy, or Dukie, Namond was forced to lie to himself. I loved the fact he got a happy ending.
@sakuraba86
@sakuraba86 4 года назад
It's easy to like Michael because he's cool. And Randy because he's good. And Dukie because he's poor (and good). But I like Namond because he was a spoiled poser. He was the worst character. He got punked by Sherrod, and moved his corner. But he still had to act hard because none of his peers saw it. He cowered from a fight with Kenard, and then went back to bully Dukie with the same "Gump" shtick. He was the weakest character on the show, and I know it would be the last character I want to play. That makes me like the character. Same for E.B. Farnum from Deadwood.

Namond was robbed of his choice to be himself. From the beginning it was evident whilst he was being a total asshole BUT I understand WHY. He was trying to protect his true self. He ment no harm but was only trying to camouflage his true self in order to simply survive. His father was a killer and his mother was an opportunist...so your birth was used for furtherance of her agenda. That in itself should have been soul crushing. But from prison and police (father's) he arose from the concrete to be better than both.

Glad Bunny put Namond on the right track, he's so much different than what he started out as. But I felt like no justice was served for Duquan and Randy, who were so likeable in Season 4. But it goes to show how not having a figure in your life to look up to and being surrounded by bad influences can really fuck up your life. Both boys never had a chance to redeem themselves. If Namond had stayed with his selfish mother who was forcing him into the drug game, he would've ended up dead.

Well said! It really is terrible how things like this really happen, almost as the future for Michael, Duquan, and Randy were already written. It can be hard to escape ones social inheritance. I saw it in my own life enough. Coming from a poor area, underfunded schools, gang activity, unstable homes, limited access to resources and tools to succeed, and wider society judging you based on all of the above. And just like in The Wire very few people managed to escape the life, the vast majority fall victim to it at a very young age.

The wire was such captivating writing. After so many years off the air. There are so many lessons, innuendos, and messages. We the viewers can observe, can't believe the smallest details of an episode. Namond was a spoiled entitled child who was only respected primarily because of his father’s reputation. De’londa was the same way. Namond needed a chance, which is why he went to Bunny who offered him stability, structure, and the one thing namond’s own mother couldn't give an that's acceptance. De’londa couldn't accept her son didn't have an ounce of weebay killer mentality. This debate that namond takes part in, the look on his new parents' face exhibits pride. If our disadvantaged children get a chance in life, the potential is indefinite. It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men. Fredrick Douglas

He was the son of a notorious gang member, and was expected to not only follow in his footsteps, but do so immediately. Had he gone that way, he would've ended up like the three characters that were forced into a life they didn't want: Wallace, Ziggy, and D'Angelo. He wasn't cut out for this life and he knew it, but his mother couldn't care less. He reached for a lifeline, and he was fortunate enough to have people outside of his family that cared for him. What makes Season 4 great is the four diverging paths the four kids take. They all have their quirks and possess incredibly engaging personalities, but they all lose their innocence along the way and only one made it out...and it wasn't because he was smarter than them or possessed something more extraordinary than the other three, but because of luck. He was fortunate to get into that class, build a bond with Colvin, and have that connection with Cutty. He got lucky, and sometimes that's how life works. It's brilliant!

I've just been thinking about one thing: when Cutty is introduced to the show, it is said that he killed a man called "Elijah Davis"... I thought this man could be related to Clay Davis. That would be some odd common point with Namond then: both of them would have come from families involved in the game, and both of them would have become politicians... I just hope that Namond would not become a piece of shieeeet like Clay Davis...

I see people carrying this disdain for Namond and his good fortune, but, I for one cannot think of a more worthy recipient of this blessing. There may have been characters as deserving, but even still, none more so than Namond Bryce. When considering the fact that he had an absent father whose notoriety loomed over him (which over the course of his life would have been much more of curse than a blessing) and an atrocious mother, whenever the opportunity presented itself for Namond to prove that he could be a productive citizen outside of confines of the cutthroat concrete jungle he rose to the challenge, every single time. Namond was the most realistic of the four boys from season 4. He was a mislead boy, which is not surprise when you consider his best source of guidance turned out to be his sociopathic murderous father (until of course Mr. and Mrs.). Namond has the most common pressures of young black males, single parent home with an incarcerated/absent father being raised in a poor area with a bad school system to match. Namond didn't necessarily catch breaks that he didn't deserve, it more that when pressed for answer you can't really think of a kid who doesn't deserve the pretty basic and fair chances that only he ended up receiving. Namond wasn't the only one who showed potential, he was the only who got a chance to use it beyond the savage limitations of inner-city Baltimore. Lastly, when you look at Delonda Bryce's position in his life, she has the most realistic expectations of her son (from a societal standpoint, at least). Society looks at a kid like Namond and expects him to act out, the police looks at him as a probable criminal, the school system consider him a dead end from the jump, and he and his peers are very much O.K. with being soldiers. It is even reflected by the comments from viewers years later into these discussions, we often see and profile the Namond types in exactly the same light as his mother does. The truth is as exactly as The Wire showed it to be, and the real bad guys aren't exactly who we initially assume them to be.

I'd love to see a one shot 90min episode of The Wire focused around the kids of season 4. Namond would be the big shot defense attorney who graduated from Georgetown who is now trying to make a name for himself in the local political scene. Michael is what Omar use to be. Dookie would be the new Bubbles. In and out of rehab constantly after OD'ing several times. Randy would be the new Prop Joe since that is his granduncle. Hardened by group homes in the foster system, joined the military, came home, and became one of the most imaginative yet brutally effective drug dealers. Now on the verge of becoming a major players in the Baltimore drug game. Carver would be a Major, as would Shakeema as they are career police.

I hear people saying naymond didn't deserve to come out the way he did as opposed to the other kids but that's very harsh to say given the circumstances the kid faced. His father a criminal well known and the pressure for him to keep his father's reputation alive (being his son and all) was too much. He realized that life was not for him but he didn't no anything else. When Mr colvin showed him real love he began to be himself and the rough exterior he put on slowly faded away. He sought mr.colvin for help so that he could get out. He didn't use his environment as an excuse anymore. Michael was forced to be a man before his time to take care of his little brother and mother. Having been molested as a child I know that would have caused him to be the way he is in terms of not wanting to get to close to people and his inability to express how he feels. This is shown when cutty tries to be there for him but Michael ends up shunning him and thinking he is too friendly and must be gay. Michael carried the world on his shoulders and made his decision to be the way he was , he didn't look for a way out like namond he allowed his environment to make him cold. That is what he wanted. Duquan could have done so much better for himself but became like the people he had been living with a crack addict. It was unfortunate but he made the decision noone forced him. The only one I can say didn't deserve what he got was randy because randy tried to escape. He tried to get help and he tried to be a good young man. He didn't sell drugs , he wanted to sell candy to make money in school to make a honest earning. He was smart and caring and helpful even though sometimes a bit mischievous but all kids as , he was no means bad. After the situation with the police who failed to deal with the situation properly regarding Lil Kevin randy payed the price being called a snitch and suffered. His house was burnt as a result of the police failure to do their job right and he ended up in a home where nobody cared about him, a home full of kids and adolescents some of which beat him up. He became cold and hard like the environment around him. Carver wanted to adopt him and couldn't and then he just abandoned him. Randy unlike duquan and Michael didn't choose his life he wanted something else for himself but didn't get the opportunities that namond had and so was forced to stay where he was. Duquan and randy had opportunities to get out and didn't take it randy had none and namond took his.

The Wire was a good ass man show hands down....I like how the creators of the show focused on the kids and hinted who they will become like in the series. For example.... Michael became the new Omar. Namond was D'Angelo Barksdale: He just didnt go to jail and die like he did. Dukie became the new bubbles. Randy mite become the new Marlo: Hint to how he acts around Bunk in season 5 Kenard is the new Bird Hilton: Due to his foul mouth like Bird. and Donut just continues to jack cars.

He wasn't really a major character to look into what happened to him, mostly just comic relief and a small catalyst for officer walkers attack by Michael. I imagine he kept on doing and if he didn't die in a wreck because of how much of a shit driver he was he probably became involved in some chop shop front for stolen cars
