Theo and Bee gave up their busy city lifestyles in 2014 to explore alternative living, and have lived in vans and boats since then without looking back! Along with their cat Ginjey Bear they have been driving around the world in their self converted Sprinter van. However, when the global pandemic hit they began converting their abandoned stone barn in Central Portugal to turn into a wonderful tiny stone cottage. Along the way, they have rescued a playful cat called Furrnando and have a wonderful flock of Chickens!

Hope Theo recovers soon. Make sure he is tested for Lyme disease as he is always in long grass etc. and the liver can be affected by that. All the best.

I’m so sorry Theo is not well. Is it Fatty Liver? May I suggest that Theo start drinking a shot of fresh (from your neighbors) olive oil everyday. And taking pancreatic enzymes. 2 a day. It can’t hurt. If u have elderberry plants. He can drink the juice. It’s good for you too. You have such an abundance of fresh options and you are so smart Bea. With some research I’ll bet you could make a lovely juice that would help cleanse his liver. Praying 🙏🏻 for y’all.

Can you two not catch a break!? Lovely that Bee is feeling better, and now Theo is unwell ! I have had 18 months of investigations for chronic fatigue along with many other symptoms and I have been diagnosed with liver problems (not sharing diagnosis publicly). Suffice to say, look after yourself, until you get some definitive answers, listen to your body and avoid stress and stay hydrated. Hugs to you both xx

hi guys. Concerning Theo's liver issue, check with your doctor if they screened his blood for the protein "Ferritine". If this is elevated it could indicate Hemochromatosis = Iron overload. Usually the first problems are liver enzymes to go up, fatigue and joint problems (and you wouldn't want to know the rest 😳). It's a inheritable disease among people from European decent, which has it's origin in Scotland and Northern Ireland, but has spread over the continent through the ages. 10% of the population is carrier (which is enormous). Also the most overlooked disease, men are usually diagnosed after their 40-ies unfortunately (so was I), women after the menopause. Since the incidence will be lower in Portugal, your doctor might not think of the possibility. One simple test on "Ferritine" will be enough to rule this out. cheers

This might just be a stab in the dark Bee but for years I had a health problem.I was feeling sick every day and generally just totally feeling unwell.I had seen many doctors and even consultants but with no avail.Then on one consultants appointment he just said I wonder if it might be Genetic Haemochromatosis.Which is your liver ferritines being too high.At the time the normal level should be 100 that has been revised and they now say normal level should be 50.My level was a whopping 3200.I had to give a pint of blood every 2 weeks for 2 years.The difference was amazing.That was my problem all along.As the name suggests it's genetic so if Thea has it his family needs checking.None of my family had it but past members might have had it eg parents but were both dead.It is caused by too much iron in the liver.Worth Thea mentioning it to the doctor.

Bee, you mentioned recipes: Among my favorites is apricot and slivered almond jam; Rosemary infused apricot coulis and apricot nectar. Fruit nectar is like a thick, grainy juice. Apricots and peaches are especially good for this. To be able to have the apricots "gel" enough to make jam, make sure you add pectin to the halved, peeled and pit removed apricots in a non-reactive pan otherwise, it will be a runny mess! I had a batch that I forgot to do that 1 year and we ate 18 pints of runny "jam" for months over ice cream, cheesecakes, toast and crepes. If anyone has allergies to lemon, don't use it in jam recipes; replace it with cider vinegar and it works just as well. I sometimes will do such substitutes when baking for others, as I give the extra pints as Christmas gifts. Tip: it's okay to add apricot pits (The white seed inside the apricot 'stone') to jam to enhance flavor but don't use peach pits as they contain cyanide.

There are also different types of plums that bloom and fruit at different times. European plums are ready later than the american (?) plums. I have an orchard also and it has taken me a few years to get familiar with my fruit trees. I finally made a map to help me out and keeping track at when the fruit is ready to harvest lets me know how to plan what to do with it all. You did a great pruning job for older fruit trees they will show the love soon!

I think I recall Theo saying he really liked Coke Zero? The sweeteners used in these drinks have a bad effect on liver function. Maybe a trip to a good naturopath - if they exist in Portugal - could help

Hello my beautiful friends, what a lovely and productive day. At first I thought the mystery trees might be quince, they grow well in Portugal but if they're apricots you can preserve them in syrup, make apple and apricot cakes and pies and also jam, in fact you can do this with all the fruit that you grow as well as brandy flavoured with the fruit for all your friends and helpers, maybe some for the council workers to encourage positive responses for any building applications, just a little joke, and as for Theo, I wish you all the best and hope you get well soon. The liver thrives on juices made of carrot, beetroot, ginger, celery and orange, you can jazz it up with apple, strawberry, blueberries, kiwi fruit, or any other fruit that you like but beetroot, carrot and ginger root are the cleansers. WOW, Theo is so tough and strong, I do hope you'll find a diagnosis with a good solution. And yes, making the island nice will help you get part of what you wanted when you bought the property. All the hard work in conjunction with Nature has really restored a lot that appeared lost. Thank goodness for a self healing farm. It has really responded well to the care it's being given. Apricot jam to place as the center of a double layer white cake with an almond frosting. Better yet , use their seeds as a substitute for almond paste for a marzipan frosting! Delicious !! 👩‍🔬

I'll be praying that the doctors will find out what is wrong and be able to help you get back to your full potential. However these things often take time and rest. Just a suggestion as my son who is the same age went through very similar issues. Get genetic testing done for hereditary liver diseases. There are several that are rare but manageable. But you need to know exactly which disease it is so you know how to treat it. My son found that he has hereditary hemochromatosis. Sending you the best well wishes!!

My wife and I have healed all our heath problems through and elimination diet. Please consider investigating the topic. There are many vibrant communities on social media supporting this. And it takes many forms. Each community is enthusiastic for their answer. But this is not a one size fits all thing. An expert in the field is Dr. Peter Osborne. Just watching his podcasts is a good place to start gathering information. Be well.

Oh, and 1 more thing about apricots - they don't like cold winds in Spring. When that happens in my area, I don't get a whole lot of fruit that year as wind, hail, sleet or freezing temps will trigger the tree into thinking its Autumn and it will drop all its fruit = no harvest that year!

Sending the best wishes for THEO. I know anything that effects your liver makes you exhausted, it’s the nature of the organ so to speak. Hope he gets a diagnosis soon and is back to his ‘non-stop’ self soon!
