You and you alone, or a DAO (decentralized autonomous organization) would own whatever the NFT is. But NFT JPEGs are the least interesting part of why the technology for them is desperately needed. Where the need for NFTs comes in, is in terms of equities and other financial assets, so that, without direct registry, one would own the stocks or ETFs that they put their hard-earned money into. Right now, if you have money invested into the stock market through a broker, you don't actually own any of it, it's yours in street name but e.g. Fidelity and Vanguard own it, and are able to lend it out to shortsellers, etc, to decrease the value of what it is, in order to help themselves with bets they've made. Problem is this requires "gas fees" to trade which can get pretty expensive, and as you may have heard have a disadvantageous effect on the environment. Recently tho there has been development of zkRollups that (more or less) can pull contracts off Layer 1 ethereum (the 'real' blockchain'), reorganize them on Layer 2 (a sort of temporary blockchain), and then put them back on Layer 1, incurring less energy and money for people using it, and your invested money in the current stock market cant be manipulated without your consent or knowledge of it. NFTs aren't just pictures, etc., they're a way for you to have full control over what you think you own. More NFT organizations are adopting carbon neutral policies while at the same time making it cheaper for people to use the technology.
