It's very hard for me to get my head around this - $380,000 original MSRP for this car. And that's in 2008 - adjusted for inflation, that number is $459000 today. This is an awful lot of money.
But was it worth it? I suppose that's the key. Did a guy who dropped that kind of green on this car in 2008 get his money's worth. Undoubtedly, it would be difficult to buy a finer modern automobile - every surface, switch and fabric is of the finest materials, the engine is a twin-turbocharged 604HP monster, and the suspension, though sporty in this "S" version, is incredibly nimble while still separating the occupants from any road imperfections at all. The interior is so well sealed as to call for the cliched "pin drop" reference, and the closest thing I could compare the power and ride of this car to is a magnetic-railed bullet train. Words can not describe the chassis dynamics - it just has to be experienced to believe.
But the car itself is non-descript, at least for something that cost more than most 3 bedroom homes in America. The styling, though very attractive, is subtle enough to be confused with the S-Class the car was based on. The interior switch gear is unmistakably Mercedes-Benz, even when said switches are native to the Maybach only. While the engineering was certainly worth of the price tag, it's far from certain that the visual impact lived up to it. Perhaps that's why this particular car has suffered from more than $300K in depreciation, and can be purchased even by us commoners today.
All in all, an incredible machine, but a complete and total miscalculation from Mercedes-Benz.
