My good friend and fellow golf coach (plus anesthesiologist), Dr. Luke Bracke, joins me to cover the 3 main causes of back pain in the golf swing, and as you probably guessed, extension is involved in all of them. These findings came from a TPI golf article Luke had read years ago. As you likely saw in my recent videos, continuing with our series with Elite Golf Schools, Luke and I expand on our preference for flexion rotators over extended tilted golf swings (something Riley Andrews brought up). You can watch the full Elite Golf Series here: • Elite Golf Series . Hope you enjoy this addition to that series!

Wow. This is really some GOLD right here in understanding WHY we early extend and it makes such perfect sense. (2:46). And in answer to the "chicken or the egg" question, in my own experience I have to say it is DEFINITELY having to extend from over using the arms early in the downswing. For most of us amateurs, the ball is the nail and we just take that dominate trail arm and try to hammer the nail as quickly as possible! Taming the trail arm was the ONLY way I found to stop early extension but it takes a lot of time and effort and TRUST that we can generate speed, power, accuracy by using rotation.

Milo, Dr Luke This is gold not just for the back issues but the back swing and rotation. The figure of eight in the whole motion (Milos swimming on your back).If you exaggerate the motion slowing it helps back swing and the rotation to impact. Complicated to explain in words but takes the focus off just turning. Excellent thank you👋.

Just came across this one and am so glad Kelvin Miyahira was mentioned. Pretty sure he pioneered all of these ideas or at least the way in which we talk about them now. Sadly he had a stroke back in 2017 so hasn’t really been heard from since. I still go back to his articles though frequently. They can get super technical but the man was a genius.

Another , thought... I wonder if you could do a recording from behind (back view), overlay a vertical rectangle from the ground up through your armpits but about hip width and demonstrate for us how your lower body moves through the swing vs your upper body? Maybe you've already done this but I think it would help ppl visualize a lot better how you get the separation between lower and upper body movement while still maintaining head position. Just a thought. Great stuff as always Milo!

Do you have any tips for neck pain? It's more so the bottom left side of the back of my head as a right handed golfer.

Give someone a 10degree flat of standard lie angle and tell them the leading edge has to come through parallel to the ground. That gets them moving differently. IMO golf clubs have been off the shelf too upright for about 25 years. And the consequences of that to the swing are huge.
@MiloLinesGolf

I love it! That is something Henry and I often talk about
@555Trout

@@MiloLinesGolf It's such a huge deal Milo. When you look at the "standard" lie angle changes over the years it's ridiculous. I can't even stand the contemporary drivers for example because at 5'7" they look ridiculous at address to me. If I recall correctly I think Hogan's driver was 48 degrees! A reasonable theory why this has happened is the manufacturers discovered slicers would hit it "straighter" with more upright lie angles. The lie angle effect of course. But as a fitter and builder for 40 years I can confidently say it's a major problem. People tend to adapt to the tool. And that leads to do many of the problems you discuss.

Milo I watch all your videos as a Master Pro and I thrust big time and I’ve had 2 back surgeries - here is my issue. I can do your squeeze movements but only slowly when I add speed i regress. Now like you I’ve done thousands of lessons and can’t seem to figure out how to make it permanent through incremental speed increases?😊

Yep guys its true, ever since I stopped throwing my hands and arms at the ball and then transitioned to Milo Lines way of rotating through the ball my back aches stopped after 8 months, that's over two years ago . . what can I say about this beast, all of 5 foot 9 inches . . . thank you Milo Lines, Henry Fall and of course my old mate Ed Lasater, also, I'm 61 years young.

I need help my lower left hip and back area hurts very badly after a round or after swinging the club around, should I start off by slowing my swing down I’m not very army I try to rotate and turn as much as I can but I fear I’m doing something that is pinching a nerve or something.

How to explain Champ and Niemman back injuries? Aren’t those moves the same?
@MiloLinesGolf
@MiloLinesGolf 2 года назад
Not really champ is more of a spinner putting more stress on the lower lumbar spine. Nieman will need to tone down his side bend into the follow through at some point as he ages.

The lower lumbar is *not* meant to rotate, but to flex and extend; synovial fluids in between discs. This health info is incorrect. Save a lower lumbar.
@lukebracke5343
@lukebracke5343 2 года назад
Paul that was exactly one of the points we were trying to highlight… by avoiding excessive hip extension you can get plenty of pelvis rotation being more hip driven as opposed to hip extension which then requires lumbar rotation to get that pelvis rotation. Milo and I would tend to advocate getting that pelvis rotation from hips primarily as opposed to lumbar spine rotation… hope that cleared concept up👊🏻
@MiloLinesGolf
@MiloLinesGolf 2 года назад
Paul I hope you read Luke’s comment as we are in agreement with you we want rotation to come from hip socket and thoracic spine not the lumbar spine. I thought we made that clear in the video but maybe not.

Early extension is a reaction to the trail elbow being too far behind the trail hip.
