I'm 6'8", at some point it starts to negatively affect your health, like my joints are all fucked up and my heart has to work extra hard. And nobody even every guesses my actual height, they always guess like 6'3" or around there.... It's honestly not worth it
True. Especially if you’re 4.0 and almost done. STEM is already an investment and you can definitely afford to be a little more patient if you’ve made it that far. I would find connections with professors/faculty/students though. Try to network now so you can find a sick job once you’re done.
Even if you’re not top of your class I’d say so. I spent my time learning outside of class and doing projects that I found fun (related to my major) instead of getting good grades beyond mid 3.X and that’s paid off tremendously for me. Maxing out grades, for me, required diverting focus away from learning and actually using my major and towards wasting my time doing stuff I didn’t care about at all. But in both cases, taking a low paying job would have been a huge mistake given how valuable the skills I was learning are now.
That depends on how far your grades fall with making money. If you’re struggling to make ends meet, or you’re not mentally well, getting Bs or Cs in a stem field is not that much different from getting As
Just an FYI, for nearly all STEM PhDs, your lab pays you, albeit only in the 25-60k range depending on where you live in the US and how "prestigious" your school is, and you do not pay tuition. You also spend like >80% of your PhD doing research not taking classes. As someone who did a ChemE PhD, I saw it as a necessary evil to go into R&D positions in industry, academia, or the government for my field.
Fair warning tho: don't do a PhD unless you want to do R&D or want to stay in academia I'm only an undergrad but I've talked to a lot of the PhD students at my uni (a well funded research uni mind you) and the ones who love it are the ones who want to stay in academia. The ones who hate it are the ones who want to go into industry. The general advice I've gotten is to get only a masters if I intend on going straight to industry (engineering in Europe REQUIRES a masters) This is bc the salary increase from the 3-4 years of research does not match what you get from that same time spent gaining experience for your résumé. At least in Europe, but I believe in the US it's the same
Yes, im going in a phd program, only because its the best degree for the field I want to go into. But i knew that there was no way i was going to pay out of pocket and only applied to ivy’s/ schools that fully funded the program. have to be a TA and suffer for 6+ and do a masters and phd dissertation …but at least i can live in my own apartment.Which tbh didnt know i could do in this economy after graduation from college with a BA and getting rejected from every job i applied for in my field…
As a French/Swiss doing a PhD in Belgium, it sounds crazy to me to do a PhD without being paid. Here you easily get paid enough to live decently, or even support a couple on that single income. You're really more of a junior researcher than a student.
0:37 I have a theory that-because we are so used to going into a new school every 3-4 years (elementary schools, middle school, high school, college)-after being at a job for 3-4 years (even if it's perfect) our brain goes "welp, time for the next thing".
I've been a support staff for individuals with idd, almost all of our participants have severe autism, for eight years and I feel like I never work a day in my life. I was going to school for forensic psychology when I started working in this field and stopped going to school immediately. It's really important to put yourself into different jobs because you never know what you're naturally going to be good at until you test yourself, especially if your skills aren't commonly marketed like empathy and patience and compassion. You could be really good at something you've never even tried.
I'm in the third (out of 4) year of Architectural Technology and I watched a final year at the graduate show get a job offer for one of the most prestigious architecture firms in the country. The difference between their work and an average persons is literally 1 hour a day.
hey, big a. this is not what people usually comment on your videos, but i really appreciated some things you said. i'm stuck in a year of college i cannot seem to pass (i'm studying pure mathematics) and it fills me with hope to think there's people out there who've also struggled but got through in the end. so thanks. also, your friends are carrying you in bball? ha! couldn't be me, get good lol
I have an office job with my own office and my job requires maybe an hour of thought per day. I'm actually sick of it after a year because I'm on social media and youtube all day until I'm sick of it and then I can't even relax when I get home because I already did all of the relaxing stuff at work. Humans are great at making even good situations seem like hell.
“Extra 3 hours worth the A” question: I graduated with a 4.0 in Physics at a prestigious university. I regret spending as much time as I did studying. My advice is to really and HONESTLY study until you have a firm grasp of a given concept. That’s where you get your academic value out of your studies at uni. It’s not worth combing through your homework searching for the perfect words to write or making sure that every step of an equation is demonstrated sufficiently. Understand concepts to the point where you can hold a conversation about it with an expert that is engaging for both parties. Learning the concepts to the point of productive communication is much more valuable than having the ability to do homework the way your professor likes.
1:06 This question is saying they're studying an additional 3 hours per day to achieve A-status on their homework, right? As in, if they didn't do that additional 3 hours, they'd be more in the B-range (right?). It doesn't change the "answer", I just found it relatable as another all-A student that sometimes wondered how many hours differentiated me from A-s/Bs and the As I went after (honestly probably like a single hour, and it felt like not doing that extra hour was more of a gamble that could sometimes result in Cs instead).
8:26 rich people marry attractive people and create attractive, rich kids that marry other attractive, rich kids. The genetic lottery has been influenced by wealth since forever.
The one thing I never see big a talk about is how vital internships are for entering the workforce. Internships are how you actually get experience without being in a full time job.
W8 you have to pay for your phd in the US? In Germany you get Paid for it, at least in STEM. Or did I understand something wrong. Depending on the field and Professor it’s between 30k € an 60 something k€ per year so most of the time even above the average waige in Germany
You pay more and more, the higher up the academic ladder you go here in America. I’m almost finished with my masters and I want to go for a phd but it’s so expensive
Previous reply is not true. Pretty much every STEM PhD program in the US gives their researchers a stipend, and you do not have to pay for tuition. I was paid 43k USD a year, along with receiving 10k USD a year in additional funds for my fellowship. I do think this is on the higher end though, most stipends are closer to 25-35k a year, some being higher if you live in super high cost of living areas.
Never do an job you truly love. Its may sound bad but its true. Take people who love animals for example and want to be an vet. It sound great working with animals all day until you realize you have to sometimes put animals down or animals just hates vets. Even game programmers that grew up loving video games ends up hating games after constant burn outs. Most people fall out of love with the job after a while and will see it as just another job.
Wealthy people can just sit out a couple of months or even years to just chill out if they wanted or had to. Normal people don't even get the luxury of taking one day off to chill without the looming thought amount bills and shit in the back of their minds.
Tbh they haven't in a while. Ever since Aedish took over the channel it's been more of a stream highlights channel. Personally I prefer this, but yeah we've kinda lost the clips
I mean there are clips posted in shorts, but most of them are from these videos, and honestly something about those aren’t hitting. I love these videos though!
Yeah buying height and years sounds dystopian but imagine being able to buy someone’s vote. Someone doesn’t want to vote? Buy it off them for $500, let corporations have a field day 😂
What are you talking about big A? Over here in my small European country, we have free masters degree and we are paid salary while doing PhD...I guess that's something American mind can't comprehend.
Please for the love of God DO NOT post any league of legends content. Absolutely don't want to see that garbage anywhere. If you like the game, that's cool but keep it to your damn self.
