A dollar 9 years ago is worth nowhere near as much as it is today due to inflation. If that money has been sitting in a bank account losing value year on year that's terrible.
I took an ethics class in college and did a project on the ethics of charities. REALLY opened my eyes to just how vile and misleading those organizations can be. ALWAYS DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH. VET YOUR SOURCES BEFORE DONATING.

My dad passed from dementia 4 years ago. It’s such a horrific disease. He declined very quickly in part because of his PTSD stemming from the two tours he served in Vietnam. Everything happened so fast I was 36 when he passed and just had my first child a little boy who looks so much like him. Thank you for sharing about this on your platform. This actually made my stomach hurt listening to it. Why is the money sitting in a bank account for 9 years!?! They can donate that to a number of charities that help care for people and families struggling lot care for their loved ones suffering from this disease.
My grandmother has dementia, she hasn't recognized me in over ten years. Thankfully she is a very kind and caring soul and tries not to make it seem like she doesn't forget, but I know she doesn't. She always asks where my grandfather who passed before I was born is and when she is "going home" (she hasn't lived in her old house for six years). Dementia is a crippling disease, for everyone involved.
@bangbrandon5800 It is. Dementia makes you forget even to the point you need carers to help you eat and drink. You pretty much forget how to function until it kills you.

More like the kid has been telling everyone for ten years how many times he jumped in and in what great forms, and it turns out he never did. And now someone pushes him in, he does a colossal belly flop and is now actively crying and pissing in the pool for everyone to see.

@@warlordofbritanniai believe people will keep supporting charity streams, but people who donated to open hands will probably think twice before donating again to another organization, which is good for them but sad for the real ones
Honestly, that's kinda of a good thing in a way. The sad reality is that 90% of charities out there are like this. You have to know EXACTLY where your money is going and WHAT it is going to be used for before you donate. Otherwise, it's nothing more than an empty virtue signal to make yourself feel good. In a way, this event is kind of a good lesson for a lot of people. Stop thoughtlessly donating to these big charities and instead think about donating DIRECTLY to someone and for a specific purpose where you know for sure what the money will be used for.
@@iainbreen7835this just happened over here. Some woman embezzled millions raised from the good will of the public toward her father. She just had to create a third party charity instead of sending the money direct to the health service which, meant she could then start to use the funds to pay off her mortgage. This woman was already very wealthy. She just had to have more.
What a bizarre and sad situation. Not only does it tank his reputation as a charitable content creator, it makes the general audience more doubtful of other promoted fundraisers, which can hurt how much money research groups/charities get and slow their goals. 9 years is a long time to simultaneously be running charity events but not be donating anything, very suspicious on it's own even if nothing was withdrawn directly.
My mom was diagnosed with dementia and for the first time ever she couldn’t remember who I was yesterday, I think it is by far the most painful experience I’ve ever been through thus far. Things really went downhill fast after we lost my dad.

My Grandfather passed due to dementia back in 2016 myself and my mum would look after him before he was in a home and it was horrible seeing him not knowing who he or anyone else was, this is disgusting behaviour.
The worst part is that people forget about inflation. From the recorded donations each year from 2014-2022, after you factor in the price of inflation of each year, that comes to *$102,489* that just vanished because of depreciation. I don't know how anyone can say that this doesn't harm anyone: they wasted $102,489 and 10 years' worth of dementia research, and that's EXCLUDING the $125,395 they kept for their own "expenses".
When you put it that way they are technically stealing peoples money. When I donate to a charity I expect that money to be going ASAP like within weeks after donating or at the most a few months, not years after or decades.
@@cjc872 Good point, could even be the whole purpose of the scam - that way they could have their cake and eat it - not spending the money while profiting off it 🤔
One of the most terrible forms of "damage" is to people's trust in giving to charities. I don't give to beggars anymore as I found out many were scammers. I give directly to charities that feed the homeless. At leas you see them getting coffee and food. I also offer them food if they want something when I'm shopping.
I was willing to accept this as an unfortunate mistake until they got into the operational costs not actually being listed, and how they vary greatly from year to year. That's the biggest, reddest flag I've ever seen.
Or the fact that *NOTHING* makes sense... So he HAS experience in donating in the past. So he understands there has to be some degree of correspondence. But he assumed that it was being donated... by itself? But how are you withdrawing money for "operational costs" EVERY FUCKING YEAR from said account and not noticing the balance lmao. AND THEN he changes his story that he hasn't found the right organization yet and this goes aaaaall the way back to BEFORE he even started collecting money? So how are you name dropping all these organizations that you've been "supporting" all these years? So again, it's just a full circle of bullshit.
the saddest part is if they WERE donating the money as they got it, they would have made considerable strides in the research and fight against dementia. they might be donating it now, but they could have been active in the fight for 10 YEARS; what a large amount of time gone to waste :( edit: since I have a lot of people being smartasses but a couple that want to try to correct me, yes, me saying considerable was a bit of an exaggeration. I also have pessimists basically saying it doesn't matter when he donates because 600K still doesn't matter that much, but that isn't the point. my point with this is that, no matter how I worded it, he still sat on the money for 10 years instead of doing something with it
@@existskk99none of the money was invested in anything afaik, so any interest they gained will be miniscule compared to how the value of the dollar has decreased sadly

My grandpa died from dementia in September. It’s one of the worst disease’s to watch take someone from you. Keeping money from a cause like that is so devastating.
The most upsetting part about this is he could have chosen to not do fundraising streams if he genuinely couldn’t find a good charity to donate the money to. This is a situation that could have been avoided entirely if he just didn’t fundraise without having a clue where the money would go to.
This is like the Froot situation. Froot a vtuber from VShojo donated money to a Trans charity. The problem was that the charity had ties to a pedo ring.
That's the most upsetting???? Not that he took money under the pretense it was going to VERY SPECIFIC places when he knew it wasn't??? If he "couldn't find anywhere" he wouldn't be doing streams saying it's going to specific places when he knew it wasn't... There is zero chance this is just some honest mistake, ZERO..... He did streams knowing exactly where it was going, his pocket.
Understanding the effect of inflation over these last years, it actually means that if he donates the money now, that money is worth less than what it would have been worth if he had donated every year for every fundraiser. Even assuming negligence, this negligence has worked against his cause which is just plain awful
Good point I was just thinking yesterday about all the things that were less than half their current price not even 5 years ago, and how much would be saved if things had been bought back then at those prices
Yeah, money has gone down about 20% in value than it was back in 2014. They got at least 100k every year in donations, but whatever they got back then would only be worth about 80k now. Their whole 600k now would've been worth about 750k then. And even if they donated it all now, it doesn't help that 10 years of research funding was basically squandered.

As a person who’s watched my once very independent, creative grandma turn into almost a complete stranger as a result of dementia, I think this is just ridiculous. My grandma’s dementia has gotten so bad that I’ve had to leave work and drive an hour to her house to take her to the ER because she forgets to eat. Her dogs have to get buzzed because of how matted they get. My parents are having a tough time sending her to community senior living because she’s threatening to kill herself if they do. This all started happening in the past year. If this guy knows how awful watching your loved one go through dementia is, I can’t understand why he’s keeping thousands that could help others going through it now. I really, really hope this situation goes forward in the right direction.
on the senior center. Take her to some. Yes some are nightmares. But ive moved people into assisted living places and some are Nice. They have a community, can make friends, have things to do. The most memorable one was an airforce pilot and his wife. A maybe 700 sq foot apartment in a pretty nice assisted living place. They were excited
With my Grandma we were able to find kind of a group home type place, maybe she would be more open to that? It was maybe 4 other patients in a large house and there was somebody there with them 24/7. It wasn't like a nursing home at all and instead of leaving for constant doctor visits they had a doctor come once a week or so to evaluate them all. I don't know if this is a possibility where you are but the place we found my Grandma worked really well when my family wasn't able to manage her care safely alone anymore. Edit: Also, her social security and insurance covered the entire cost, so we weren't having to worry about that and they allowed her to have visitors daily etc.
This really sucks because in order to find a cure or a medicine to help slow down the effects of some of these illnesses, we just need time and to waste 9 year's is tough. We could possible had a cure in that time and we could've saved lives by now.
Emm...You think this money will have changed anything this 9 years? They wouldn't. Research of such medicines is made by multibillion giant pharmaceutical companies this other organizations can't do anything there. They mostly use the money(other than administrative expenses) for the expenses needed to take care such individuals.

As a professional fundraiser this upsets me because these are the exact situations that damage the publics perception of nonprofits and the work we actually carry out.
Since you are professional fundraiser can you tell me how can me as a person make sure that i give my money to someone that will use at least 80% of them to the actual cause. How can we check this people out and make sure we aren't donating to corrupted organizations enriching themselves with our money while giving pennies to simply cover their backs to the actual cause.
@SIPEROTH I'm a tad late responding to this sorry. A few resources I recommend are guidestar and just Googling a nonprofits form 990 if you wanna go super in depth. 990s will show you everything but are dense to read sometimes. Guide star rates and ranks charities and assembles almost all the info most people would need to make an informed decision. Best bet is to call your local branch of a nonprofit ask to speak to a gift officer and ask to get a meeting with them (zoom or phone call is fine) and ask everything you wanna know. They're required to tell you and if they don't have an answer 99.9% will find you the answers and follow up with you (I and my colleagues always do and this has been status quo everywhere I've worked, even for people who end up not donating. I work to ensure a positive, transparent and honest experience). An example of a nonprofit that uses 90% of every dollar directly towards the mission is the red cross. Another good one is habitat for humanity, I forget their dollar handle but I remember it being almost all in for the mission. Lastly, please remember the work we do is hard work and very nuanced, so if an executive salary is around 100k they're not overpaid, those same people would make far more in the for profit space and work only 40 to 60 hours where as most nonprofit execs I know are pulling 80+ hour weeks to make the mission a reality.
For the last few years of my grandma's life she thought I was "Dave the window cleaner". My dad would always tell her that I'm his son - and she would always then think that I was a different son, asking how about my mother's ears (my step brother's mum has to use hearing aids)

I think it's pretty crazy to think that for 9 years this has just been going unnoticed even though the records are public and the behavior has been going on since the beginning
That is why charities have to make their data public, for us to avoid such scams. Sadly nobody seemed to take advantage of this and actually look it up before donating.
@@StriKe_jk Yeah - this is a lot more common than I suppose people realize. There are LARGE organizations that you probably know about who publicly use VERY LITTLE of their donations for actual charity work - yet people still donate.

My jaw genuinely fell when you said the completionist. Jirard was one of those creators I always perceived as down to earth and not problematic. I don’t even know what excuse he could come up with that would explain why the money is just sitting in an account instead of being donated for so long
The working theory I have and I've seen others have now as well in his minor defense is that they were trying to make what's called a "restricted" donation to charities, which involves the money donated being restricted to certain use cases such as using it to fund specifically treatments or equipment. The problem is that those kinds of donations are usually unavailable unless the amount donated is high enough to make the demand, and would otherwise would just allow the charity to have unlimited access for use with the charity. I think it explains the funds sitting there, even if it doesn't negate the fact that they didn't make the people donating aware of that fact. Highly negligent at the least. The interview itself from Muta and Karl don't touch on that but it feels like it was likely mentioned in it with them. There are some missing pieces here still for sure, but I asked an accountant family member what a reason for holding charity funds like that would be and they immediately asked me if they were making restricted or unrestricted donations. So at least on the accounting front it seems there's some kind of explanation.
If there was a good explanation, it would’ve been given during the interview. If the money was being responsibly handled then the explanation would’ve been simple and honest with the names and details to back it up, and people would believe it. The reason we’re sat weighing his credibility is because the given explanation is subpar. I would say that’s because it’s a lie. Also, the more time that passes before we get a video from him coming forward about all this the less I’m going to believe him. It’s not like he needs to find any receipts.

The thing that peeves me off is that he knew about it and just sat on the money. My great grandmas dementia has just started getting worse. My birthday was on the 4th and on Sunday at church i walked up to give her a hug and she asked me "Who are you?" Needing multiple people to remind her broke my heart. The past 5 years have been rough for her.
My grandma has lost it too. She doesn’t recognize me at all anymore, but in her most lucid moments she’ll talk to me about me but doesn’t know I’m me. She’ll say she’s upset that her granddaughter doesn’t visit her anymore and I’m like “it’s me grandma. I’m here” but she can’t recognize me so she doesn’t believe me.
My grandpa is currently suffering from dementia. It’s a horrible disease. Every day he gets worse and I sadly think he doesn’t have much longer. This situation is genuinely really disappointing.
This nauseates me. I, along with my mom, we’re my Nana’s two caretakers in her final years while dealing with dementia. It was absolutely devastating to watch her downfall, and the whole family was there when she passed. From there, I had watched her get carried out of the home her and my Gomp (who passed in 2001) built when my mom was born, where I lived in at the time. All of a sudden… nothing. I literally stared at the wall for three hours once everyone left. I had no idea what to even do with my life at that point.😢
I think one of the really big issues with this and an aspect that I havent heard anybody mention is that just because he didn't spend the money, that doesn't mean he hasnt been wasting it. Because of inflation, even if he donates everything now, the buying power of all that money has dropped substantially since it was donated. It has literally become worth less just by him not spending it. If he had been donating it as it came in like he promised, the charity would've been able to do more with it
And just because he hasn't spent it *yet* doesn't mean that that wasn't the ultimate goal. It's entirely possible that the plan was to just keep gathering money, using the whole "operating costs" thing to slowly siphon money out of the account, and then just pocketing the rest of it later, after they feel like they've made enough, using some excuse. Though to be fair, I don't think that was the case, or at the very least, that the scam part would've been the brother's idea and the RU-vidr would likely have been kept in the dark. But who knows.
@@PeksisarvinenYeah I dont think it was purposefully malicious unless Jirard actively wanted to sabotage his career for some reason. I think hes just really stupid.
This is why respectable RU-vidrs work directly WITH charities, rather than "collecting money to give to them later" The example that comes to mind is MatPat/Game Theory's St. Jude livestreams
Just to be clear, it isn't an "accusation" when they flat out admit that this is true. They just dispute whether or not it is a big deal. Jirard comes off horrible in that call with the boys. Trying to turn it around on them for clout chasing and such. Sounds like he is whipping stuff up on the spot, just bad. I don't think I have heard yet what the tip-off was that caused them to look into it. Something must have come up that made them go sniffing.
The whole situation is incredibly bizarre. How hard is it to donate to a reputable dementia benefactor? There's plenty of them out there that are much more reputable than their own org. Plus the fact that they are saying that the donations are going to specific organizations but none has been donated to them thus far. Like Charlie and the original reporting stated, lots of red flags.
@@TimothyCHenderson Yeah, the weird thing to me is it's not like Jirad gained anything from this either. He never took money from the charity he just left it there and didn't donate it. But I'd assume that the ones he list out in his live steams are reputable becasue why else would he mention them.
What makes him look worst is when he said "i was actually gonna donate it today. And even if the money gets donated, due to the economy it's simply just worth less now so it hurts even more seeing how this has played out :(
Yeah even if he did a 180 and donated it today the inflation rate between then and now has already slashed the worth of the money by about 102,000 dollars
my grandfather suffered from Dementia for over 10 years, and there was nothing more harrowing than watching the calm, loving papa I once knew be reduced to a cognitive mess. It’s awful watching someone’s you know forget themselves and slowly wither away until they’re only remembered by you. I would do anything to get those years back with my gr a father and visit him more often, hug him again, sing with him, talk with him. Maybe then we wouldn’t have forgotten me. It is one of the slowest ways to die, and hurts everyone around. No one should have to go through that pain, and the fact that someone could be so selfish as to hold the money other have given is pathetic. My grandfather did not die so he could sit on his money, money that he is bound to remember because he does not have the curse of forgetting.
As someone who has lost a family member to Alzhiemers, this situation is heartbreaking. It's already a tough ailment for everyone involved, I can't imagine what the people who donated in honor and/or memory of loved ones must be feeling right now. My heart goes out to everyone affected
When I heard they scammed them from a dementia charity it made me seethe . My great grandmother died of dementia and for them to take advantage of people who are trying to go towards that cause of helping towards the fight against dementia is so low and disgusting
Watched this video yesterday, really eye opening about how little people check on what charities actually do with the money. Hopefully more people will do research after Karl’s video
@@connorfour yeah man you literally have to scroll 3 or 4 comments down just to find real people. I feel like its very common here just because he's a big youtuber.
Nah n u shouldn't listen to liars like Karl at all. The sooner he's silenced for good, the better cause liars like him will be dealt with for good & folks like Billy Mitchell will have the last laugh as a FU for spreading lies & slander to people like him rightfully so
"Just tell me where you want the money to go and I'll donate it " implies that that was never the intention in the first place and he really did plan on pocketing it.
False, pocketing it would be public record and get him imprisoned, and he knows that. It shows that he is overly concerned with his public image and channel's reputation, which is fairly understandable given how even petty drama over inconsequential mistakes wrecks channels these days. No malicious motivation makes sense if you think it through, he has just displayed negligence and a fear of transparency.
