I just received my CBP Black Water Buffalo Thompson Chain Reference Bible in the mail a few days ago. The Water Buffalo Leather cover from AA Leathers is absolutely beautiful. It's really thick and it's Calfskin leather lined and edge lined. It has 3 long double sided black satin ribbons. The Kirkbride text block is really good. Can't go wrong with a CBP Black Water Buffalo Thompson Chain Reference Bible. It's well worth the $125.

The very best tool for lesson writing. I have used the Thompson Chain Reference almost all my life and I'm 58. I love it. I'm an avid user of Computer Bibles, but when writing lessons or sermons, the TCR cannot be beat by any computerized Bible tool. I have 5 TCRs. (NIV,KJV,NKJV, NIV hard back and KJV loose leaf)

Hmm. The index marker for Timothy in my ESV Thompson Chain is at the beginning of First Timothy. The first page is on the left-hand side. So the marker is on the right-hand page, so the second page of First Timothy.

Good review! I have a couple of Kirkbride Thompsons and a couple of CBP Thompsons... the Kirkbride wide-margin shows signs of the bonded leather cracking... I did a rebind with iron calfskin. Now it's much more durable and will last to the next generation. Also I have added 128 pre-lined sheets of paper (HP Ecofficient 16 lbs thin) and the glued in paper has strengthened the binding. I regilded the top and bottom with blue and red archive paint. And added golden tabs for easy access.

I used a Thompson for years and bought another one recently. This is not the same bible it was years ago. The pictures in the back are a lot cheaper now. It's pixilated, they are saving on ink or something. The binding was crooked, the block is not sanded, just several different things. It wasn't bought as imperfect or anything. Just kind of sad really compared to how they use to be. If a guy never owned one of these from the 90s, they would never know the difference. I've decided after all these years to just go with another study bible. Tip though, if you want a really nice Thompson chain, go with the one from CBP its so, so much nicer. Kirkbride just isn't the same anymore and CBP doesn't hold back on anything when it comes quality.

I was very disappointed with the bonded leather. I have been considering getting it rebound in a top grain leather or other type of Hyde. I really like the Bible itself but like you said, Its all I know. I did not have a 90's version.

I got one on ebay from 1964 and you might be right, they are build to last because mine still feels alright, its only just with more yellowed pages and faded out golden gilt. But its all in all still sturdy like it will still last for many years to come. It might be that for the ones made today that they are a bit of lesser quality probably due to mass production. Its a bit the same problem that many companies seem to have these days. Quantity before quality, and its a bad evolution.

@@jz2566 I actually did a rebind in butter ball calfskin on the ESV version of this Bible. I got the rebind done at Bensbibles. He does excellent work and it is one of my top favorite Bibles.

Just started using one. It's ESV from Zondervan in good quality imitation brown leather - often imitation leather now seems much better than bonded or some genuine leathers. Such a resource! It's like being a microbiologist getting a microscope for the first time (bad analogy, I guess) but this opens up God's "living and active" word in an entirely new way to me. Thanks for this reveiew!

I have the same one but from 1964. I recently bought it second hand on ebay and its almost exactly the same, just the pages are a bit more yellowed out and the gold gilt has faded for most part, but it does NOT has that weird bump on the side. I think since yours came free, maybe they use some for that, that are a bit flawed, I dunno. But anyway this Tompson bible is amazing for most of it. Mine has a purple ribbon which I really like and the old feel this bible has with all those drawings and pictures just makes it kinda special. For its old age the leather and binding still seems fine and hardly has any writing or underlining in it (lucky me). Thanks for the review though. Very enjoyable.

I really enjoy the old pictures as well. I would tend to agree with you about that bump on lining due to it being a free Bible however; I also purchased an ESV version of the exact same Bible and it does the same thing. Other than that, it's an awesome Bible!

Just yesterday I ordered a burgundy leather 1964 Kirkbride KJV TCR. I can’t wait to get it, as it’s in very good condition, with no highlighting or markings; just person’s name engraved on the front & a couple of pages that are yellowed around the edges. I bid on it & won; got it for under $40 including tax & shipping.

Great Job!! I really like the new ESV Burgundy leather version! I love the 'Old Timey' description for such a classic. And I find that I like the KJV illustrations the best compared to the other versions. I also find it refreshing for my eyes when I need a break from the full color editions. I particularly love the KJV I got from Church Bible Publishers, the ironed calf skin is beautiful!!!

Im really considering getting the calf skin! Looks very nice in some of the other videos that I have watched. I too love the Old Timey classic look. As strange as it sounds, I think I like the Old Timey more than the modern versions.

Bible Reviewer You won't be sorry getting the CBP and the price is great for the quality. They have a premium Burgundy leather option for their Scofield that's is amazing! I would love to see that ad an option for the Thompson. I just wish CBP gave the option to purchase a box to store it in like their other offerings. I am so with you on the illustrations. It is a very elegant presentation. I have the NKJV, NIV and ESV Thompson's as well and I think the illustrations are a bit more cartooney and I'm not as fond of. But they are a treasure to have. My two favorites Thompson chain and The Open Bible. They both provide a treasure hunt in the Word!

Bible Reviewer Yeah I have a few! I have some Schuyler and Allan's as well. But I have sent some quality bibles to people in need that I have met on RU-vid I'm happy to do so because I am blessed to be able to afford nice bibles. But the bottom line is my goal is collecting, not hoarding lol!!!

I feel the exact same way! The Lord has blessed me enough so that I too have been able to gift some Bibles to a few people. I am not really familiar with Schuyler and Allan's. I will have to look into them.

Do you know if there is any differences between this edition and the handy size edition? (Besides the smaller font) does the handy size have the same maps, images, ect?

I cannot say for certain. I have not had the opportunity to handle the handy size version as of yet but I would bet its exactly the same. I have both the ESV and the KJV and they are the exact same when it comes to the content outside of the translation itself.

I have a thompson chain reference bible that was printed in great britain,by Eyre &spottiswoode H.M. Printers.Cambridge University Press.And on the binding has King James Version written out,instead of kjv.Can't seem to find anything on any thompson chain printed in great britain.

I figured out that the spine cover should fold inwards, not outwards, so that it would rather have the "old, folded spine look" than a poorly folded damaged-look like that one.

That looks exactly like the Thompson that I had that was stolen. Thanks for the memories. After my Mom died I just gave up. People stealing Bibles is hypocritical. Stolen at Church in the Men's Room.

My favorite picture in the back is Isaiah scroll from the dead sea caves....Its only in the KJV version I think cause my wife's nkjv doesn't have it.

Just got myself a Thompson. Have a question. In the margins. Why do some topics on a verse have a forward ref and some don't? If the topic relates to the verse then why not a chain? More topics do not have a forward ref than do. Kind of confusing. Thanks

I'm really not sure of the method behind choosing which topic has a forward chain and which ones do not. I have found that many of the topical verses are all listed and written out in the back so that you do not have to go searching through the whole Bible to find all the verses, which is really convenient. I also have theorized that the chains always move forward therefore, the closer you are to the end of the Bible the less forward chains there are, so I believe it directs you to the reference guide in the back to give you the whole chain from Genesis to Revelation. I hope this helps.

Bible Reviewer Thanks! I'm slowly but getting this I believe. But what makes this good is the fact that this is exactly what I was looking for! A new challenge from God's Word! Was looking for something new to where I have to do some searching and studying on my own, and not have to depend of someone else's notes as much yo know? Just pure scripture.

Bible Reviewer And still Loving it. He does a great job letting scripture interpet itself. And giving you the chance to decide how you view it. But in 1 Thess 4;16 , The second coming? Ouch! I tend to disagree here.

I've received review copies before and not with a "Not for resale" I think they sent you a defective bible to review? I hate their bonded leather its the worst on the market, BUT I love their bibles and their genuine leather is very good. If you want a good KJV version in calfskin like a true premium churchbiblepublishers.com is awesome. I just did a review of their limited edition and they have black ones left but always carry ironed calfskin for the same price. They are amazing you would love them, THOMPSONS have been around since early 1910 and me and my wife are addicted welcome to the Thompson Chain world😁
