Very important feature of our nymphs is its weight and size too. Pattern comes after these two features.
Now, what if you need to put small nymph pretty deep or you need to use it in fast water....or both...
watch this video to see some of the ideas and solutions.
Maybe i haven't said it all, but there are A few useful tips....
Now sit by your vise and tie some of your favourite patterns in different weights....
Cheers
Vladimir

Vladimir. I have to thank you once again. We had cold very high and fast water conditions this weekend. I was forced to use a four mil in conjunction with a 3.3 or 2.8 to get down. I caught a lot of fish on that little size 18 4 mil pheasant tail , tied exactly the same way you tie it. I can see why you said not to show it to your friends, as they would laugh. Just awesome ! Thank you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sam

Glad i could help somehow... 🍺 That sounds like togh water. But it can be rewarding for sure. Only downside is if u get big fish size 18 can be difficult to go through the jaw bone.

Wonderful! I just happened to be listening while tying some flies and your video came up. So, I copied a few of your pheasant tail nymphs, since I happened to have everything right there. I can't wait to use them.

I think it would be GREAT if you took your camera outside with your rod and showed what you know alongside a stream, covering different scenarios in riffles, holes, structure and pocket water. That would be super fascinating and I for one, would learn a LOT. Thanks, Vladimir!

Brilliant video, nice flies. I think depth/presentation is more important than pattern. It’s important to have different weights so you can adjust to different river levels.

@@3guys3girls well i live in china soni found a good factory and i buy their hooks. Its no name brand but quality is amazing. I love it. Same shape as dohiku but slightly offset. I think it increase hookup rate and it hold fish amazingly good

Awesome comparison! It'd be nice to see a comparison of the drop rate in water between those...I may have to startle my aquarium fish soon :D
@Oholisfliesandfishing
@Oholisfliesandfishing Год назад
Thanks. I was thinking about that sinking rate for a long time. But, just dropping them and counting is not satisfying. I was thinking attaching them to tippet and stretching and then dropping.... Tippet affect it a lot... So i would have to do it with at least two tippet diameters.... And i would need good camera under watwr.... All done in swimming pool

I agree, but small nymphs are often taken more confidently by the fish so i dont have problems. Now i use jig off beads that solve that issue completely. Thanks for your comment. Tight lines Vladimir 🍻🍻😀

Nice visual comparison of the bead/body ratio. Would be interesting to know the difference in weights. Personally, I prefer to keep my fly silhouette right and add a splitshot if needed. Cheers!
@Oholisfliesandfishing
@Oholisfliesandfishing 5 лет назад
I am not sure about weights, it is not important in fishing....its the experience that i use for determining which one is right or just by experimenting. I cant use split shot because its not legal in competitions and detection is slightly better with direct nymphing. I dont even use two nymphs mostly. Proportions are not good but fish dont mind i think. And one more thing.. i try to use as thin tippet as possible to get deeper. Recently i used even 0.08mm tippet... 😃
@hankvana2149
@hankvana2149 5 лет назад
@@Oholisfliesandfishing I am not into competitions but I understand that you have to work within the rules. I fish for Smallmouth Bass a lot and will often use a "hopper/copper/dropper" setup (a large floating "indicator" fly to a heavily weighted nymph followed with an unweighted fly - usually a soft-hackle. For bass, I have found that the proper profile and movement is more important than size and color. Good luck with your fishing!

I'm always concerned that such a large bead (4mm) will interfere with the hook point by minimizing the hook gap. Do you think that's an issue at all?
@Oholisfliesandfishing
@Oholisfliesandfishing 2 года назад
May be but not so much that i havr noticed. Since this video i switched to jig off beads for small hooks.... Just need to find small hook with big eye. Amazing stuff... I made a video or two with those beads... For extremes i go with javi beads... Also one of my latest videos

Problem I have is that larger beads envelope the hook eye, or even slip completely over it. And I mean slotted beads on jig hooks. A 3.8 on a 16 is impossible for me with the hooks and beads I have, but I'm not about to re-buy everything.
@Oholisfliesandfishing
@Oholisfliesandfishing 2 месяца назад
In that case u can always make smaller body on larger hook with larger bead. That may be even better

The reason big beads work is because they imitate eggs with bugs attached 😂. Simple.
@Oholisfliesandfishing
@Oholisfliesandfishing 2 года назад
Perhaps... Especially silver and black ones, rainbow... All those colours 😂😂 Just kidding... I am sure it makes sense in some situations.... When fish are spawning and we are using appropriate bead colours.... I am pretty sure insects eat eggs too. I had the same thought 🍻🍻

@@Oholisfliesandfishing fish go after silhouettes. It's not up for debate. Egg imitation. Education is key to success.
@Oholisfliesandfishing
@Oholisfliesandfishing 2 года назад
@@flyguy4515 i couldnt agree more. Could you please provide some evidence of what you are saying? I know i have seen some evidence of fish not being colour blind which means they use all features nature gave them. Why eating only right silhouette when you can see colours? Also, what is your explanation for the times there arent any eggs present in the rivers. Your theory is contrary to to this example.... On the other hand, i do think that colour is way less important than people are thinking. One od the examples is dry caddis body colour. Body is shaded by wings so colour is less visible or even not visible.... Low loght and so on... Dont be so sure in what you say.its too exclusive and it excludes critical thinking which is again contrary to what you propse... Education (science)
