Hello I have a 2004 honda civic manual that got 303,xxx kms. Last year summer it runs but suddenly it died while I'm driving it in the highway. Previous owner is mechanic he said there's a no powertrain code dtcs and freeze frame data no data is stored code. I thought it's just a restart/clear codes fix but it's not. Then it was parked for a year outside even during winter. It can be push start but it's still hard to. I replaced the starter, air filter, and battery and still won't start. Please help. Do I need to replaced to whole engine or just some parts on?
just bought an 03 for $450 drove it 1800 miles home without a hiccup originally was just scrap it out when I arrived but now considering keeping, 169000 miles, looks rough but probably still lots of life
@@bayfinest1938 question for ya, I’m considering trading for a really nice 05 civic with 250k miles, it was very well taken care of, should I be worried about the mileage?
My first 2003 civic made it to over 200,000 miles before a jerk totaled it for me. It never had any of these issues, dang it really was a good car (and it was a salvage rebuild when I first got it @ 30,000). You guys are making me miss it so much right now. I nave a new to me 03, but it and I are not on speaking terms right now. LOL! It blew a head gasket on the way home from purchase. Thanks for all your Honda videos. There are always a great help! :)
The Honda Civic is a reliable car and the manual gearbox is practical. I love this car as I have owned it since 2001 and I still have 330000 km. Thank you, father, for your advice, and may God have mercy on you.
i have had all these issues except the emission control, its still a great daily driver. The fact that these are the issues and not the engine constantly backfiring or the transmission slipping speaks wonders about how well theyre built
Actually the 2001-2005 civic automatic transmission is one of the biggest blunders in automotive history. Google it and see. Failures at a very high rate and with no warning signs
@@mikegreen2229 Honda's automatic transmissions have always been problematic, but my 05 went 243K hard miles completely trouble free with nothing but regular fluid changes and an external cooler. When the automatic died, I swapped in a 5 speed manual :)
Wow some of these carried over to the 8th gen! None of these are really major OMG problems though. I think Honda and Toyota makes the best cars available to the average driver.
Bought my 2001 out of a barn😂 intake was a mouse nest same with exhaust I had every problem she mentioned after repairs had no problem with the car has like 372,000 miles on it too! Great video
I’ve had none of these problems, super thankful for my reliable civic honestly. It’s helping me out a lot right now, it’s a 2005 civic ex coupe automatic (sadly). 40,800 miles
Yeah at 40,000 miles, the car’s a lot younger and happier lol. I have the same car as you but she’s over 250k now i believe. Yes, very reliable, and fortunately easy to work on. Hahah. So far it’s had a rebuilt engine put in it (before i bought it,) new battery, alternator, starter, but still trying to diagnose the same issue. Like I said, fortunately they’re easy to work on!
I got my 2002 civic in 2017 at 45k miles and I'm up to 85k now, I've experienced everything in this video, only difference is my hood latch hasn't broken. I love my car though, not giving her up by choice anytime soon.
I can’t believe how accurate this video is! I’ve faced the power window operation problem, SRS light, and p1457 code on my 02 Civic. I’ve already replaced the window motors which fixed the issue, cleared the SRS light(Not fixed, just cleared lol) and am currently working on fixing the p1457 by replacing the canister shut off valve. Really informative and relevant video for the 7th gen Civic.
my 2001 ex coupe has had what I label as "old car" problems. currently 166k miles bought it in 2017 with 141k. needed new tires, brakes shocks/struts. I did all that over a 2 year period. then needed new IAC valve and steering fluid reservoir. thanks to stimulus payments last spring I fixed both issues. still has a small oil leak but it's very slow so I'll fix it later this year. despite all this the car drives generally wonderful its quiet and smooth running, has taken me from Santa Rosa to SF and back with no issues. only repair I've done myself is replaced burned out trip meter/odometer backlight bulb. I'm told generally coupes have less issues, especially transmission ones.
i have an 01 civic , had for about 2 months, bought with 80k on it and is the same exact color as the one in the video, the previous owner keep this car Immaculate, really thankful for the car
I have a 2002 model made for Europe with a manual transmission. I've never had any of the issues you described. The only problem I have are the dying bearings in the gearbox. You can clearly hear them.
Grateful to only have the SRS issue out of these. Although I did burn a valve the night I bought it. After a fresh rebuild she's running like a champ at 230k miles
I will say tho only 2 problems I use to have was a leaking heater core and a check engine light that would go on and off. Bars Radiator Heavy Duty with a pelletized formula fixed the heater core issue while a Cold Air Intake kept the check engine light off for some reason
All of this basically happened to me in some way lol. Got a 02 Honda Civic EX. My passenger side window went out, SRS light came on , hood latch broke, & windshield wipers don’t work on some speeds
P1457 is commonly the gas cap. Check to make sure it’s on correctly after 3 clicks or replace with a new oem one. Cheap ones from the store tend to not fix the issue.
It’s actually usually not the gas cap. That’s just the first thing Honda owners assume is wrong. Usually you need to replace the purge evap valve which isn’t hard to do anyways. Definitely more than just screwing a gas cap on but it’ll permanently keep p1457 away
You are so right on all those problems. I did a fix on the hood latch with the pull Handel from a lawnmower & small copper tube and crimped it to the cable . Bean working for 8 years on a 2002 Honda Civic . Also power window switches checked all connections door panels off put dialectical grease on all switches . Thanks for your video very helpful 👍🇨🇦
I have a 2004 civic VP. I haven't personally had any of these issues but good to know what to keep an eye on. I kept seeing notes left from mechanics who changed the oil stating that there was a minor oil leak. This turned out to be a camshaft plug seal and was the easiest fix I've done yet. If you see oil pooling on the left side of the engine(looking down at it), this is the culprit. Apparently a common issue with this model.
That's exactly what brought me here, same leak and visual I'm sure on a 2001, waiting for $13 part from Honda dealer. Thought for sure it'd be in this list.
The D17 engine these are equipped with are notorious for the head studs failing if overheated the littlest bit. There will be no indication of a problem other than overheating. However, this problem can be remedied before it happens by replacing the cheap factory head studs with ARP head studs. Once that bulletproofing has been done, these engines are not half bad. Just very slow. Automatic transmissions are also an issue for this generation too, but it seems to plague the 01-03 models the most. 04-05s have less automatic transmission failures.
#1. Head Gasket, Head Gasket, Head Gasket. I've replaced mine 3 times. #2. Automatic Transmission, I've replaced mine 3 times. The clutch plate for gears 2 and 3 wears out and it flares. #3. Lower Control Arm Bushings. I've replaced mine 3-4 times (my car is lowered). Front Engine mount replaced twice. #4. Headlight harness connector melted. I've replaced mine 3 times but it was cheap and easy to do. #5. The deadliest Takata Airbag they made. 2001 civic has a cease driving order until it's fixed. Says 50% chance of explosion. #6. Seat rocking, Worn bushings, never bothered to fix I wouldn't be surprised to see struts on the list, but since my car is lowered and it makes noises all the time, I can't complain. I think even the stock suspension may have issues though. This is the first year of the Mcpherson strut for the Civic. My steering rack has been leaking for at least 7-8 years. My hood latch has broken multiple times from the frame, and it happened to my friend too, but it was because we both have carbon fiber hoods that are too light. That's off the top of my head for common problems. But I have high miles, so I've basically replaced everything on the car at this point. I'm not mentioning normal wear items that every car would need. See replies for my response to the video.
I've seen Soo many bad reviews on a 2001 Honda Civic. I had balljoints replaced water pump at 75.000 miles. Everything is original on all the parts otherwise. I did have clutch replaced at 93 thousand with hard driving. It is the best car I have ever owned in all my 40 years of driving. I won't part with her no matter what brand new car is out there with Soo much computer junk and expense I don't want.
1. Power Windows - I never really had a problem with my power windows except the rear passenger one. That was not the switch or the regulator, but the wiring in the door from getting bent over and over again. That window didn't stop working until like year 18 or 19 I think. So I wouldn't call that specific to this car. 2. SRS Light - I had that light come on once. It was not because of the airbag though. It was because of a defective seat belt buckle or something. Seat belts are covered by a lifetime warranty, so I got that replaced for free. 3. Hood Release Cable - Never had a problem with the cable, not once. The hood latch frame however, has broken on me at least 3-4 times and I've had to drill it or mend it in order for the hood to close. 4. WIndshield Wiper Motor - I dunno where you got this idea. My car is 22 years old and my motor works fine, and I'm apart of a Civic group and have never read anyone have problems with their motor. The only thing I will mention is that recently the wipers are louder like they thud more as they hit side to side. But again, this is 22 years old. 5. P1457. I got that code for the first time a month ago at 323K miles. The switch valve on the cannister is what is usually is, so that's good advice. But mine was actually the purge valve located on the throttle body. My car wouldn't start after getting gas. That's a good sign that it's that.
My problem is trying to reprogram my key fob with the damn autolock blocking me from doing so and I have had the evap problem why my fumes are reading high rn but now I know what the problem is I've had 2 sensors replaced I'm gonna have to go check this out later see if that's the problem
I own the 2001 Honda Civic LX 5-Speed and haven't had any problems aside from a leaking heater core and check engine light go on and off however what helped the heater core leak was Bars Radiator Heavy Duty with a pelletized formula and the check engine light issue was solved upon a Cold Air Intake
@@douganderson7002 you don’t understand. It works great, (not the cheap bars, the more expensive bars) I’ve seen it work great on cars for a while. If it doesn’t work then your leak is massive
Surprised you guys didn't mention the common head gasket failures with these cars!! I've experienced the hood latch issue, window switch and p1457 code comes up once a week or so. I currently drive a 2002 lx model and other than the head gasket issue that JUST started at 197k, and few small issues you guys mentioned, these are great vehicles!
Mine didn't go until I got in the 244,000 range but I know 2 other people that had the head gaskets go on theirs too. I have had none of the other issues mentioned in this vid but the cable to the gas door broke. I just pop it open with a key. Too many miles on it to fix a cable.
@@joelopez40oz23 I have a passenger side window in my 20003 EX coupe that is slow. I have owned the car three years and it still works, so I will just leave it alone for now. The other issues mentioned here? I have none of those.
My 02 civic keeps going into limp mode. I usually fix it by adding more oil since it leaks a bit and by changing out the VTec solenoid seal every 3 months. Is my VTec fudged???
I've got an '05 coupe Special edition and have yet to experience any of these lol. I bought my car used with me being the 4th owner. Two other known common issues with these Civics are: Oil leaks. The most common oil leak on this gen is by the EGR valve on VTEC engines. It's the rear cam plug. It's like a $7 part and really easy to fix. The o-ring tends to dry out and it'll cause a small oil leak. It's like a 10 minute swap. On some Civics (can't remember if it was the coupes or sedans or even both), the exhaust pipes can actually rattle and bang against the passenger side floor board. It's a weird sound but doesn't damage anything. It sounds scarier when you drive through rain because the thermal shock along with it banging sounds like the car is about to explode. There was a small recall because it didn't affect all Civics. Some people stated replacing the hangers with stiffer ones or bending the pipe near the rear can eliminate it.
I have a Honda Civic Ex 2001 four door and it a major oil leak don’t know where it’s coming from but it pours like a water holes. If I take the air box off I see it’s dripping somewhere between the back of the valve cover and the engine.. I rip the car apart before putting it back together I need at this for a week now and still can’t figure it out I need help..

On a 20 year old car, rubber hoses can lose their elasticity and can leak without being cracked, at the ends. This goes for the evap system, vacuum hoses under the hood and even radiator hoses with clamps on. It's worse in the hot dry southwest than in the Pac Northwest or coastal NE. On the flip side, there is no metal corrosion in the SouthWest...where the North and Northeast rot metal from the road and coastal salt.
My sister's 2004 Honda Civic LX makes this really eerie sound moments shortly after ignition--and then it stops. She calls it an "Outer space whirring sound" but I think it's some kind of electronic signal for something. Any thoughts appreciated!
Any recommendations on what prevention steps to take avoid rust damage on these Hondas? I had a 00 Civic and had rust damage not matter how much I washed the undercarriage and fenders. I’m in the Midwest with lots of salt from roads not helping!
I usually dont subscribe to channels. But I immediately subscribed to yours after the vid. You nailed it down. I own a civic lx 2002 and it sure does have all those five problems. An additional one I am currently trying to overcome is a tipping noise that only comes on when I am in drive mode. When changing gear up, it sounds like the engine of a motor bike. Any help on that is appreciated. Thanks anyway
+Yoli Olman Thanks for watching and subscribing! We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Got a 2003 honda civic lx with 304,000 miles on it currently. Headgasket replaced along with most issues pointed out on here. Runs today but with lots of things replaced, especially the oil pump o ring.
I have a 2004 lx sedan with 181000 miles on it and it still runs great the only prob I have is the gas cover latch broke so I just open it with my key when I need to refuel but other than that just rusty screws I need to change on the air box cuz I need to replace my air filter the screws are just stuck and I can’t get them out
Thanks for the review. I didn’t think that this car was relevant in Europe. I have 2002 civic em2 coupe with a mileage of 240 thousand kilometers. (I don’t have the above mentioned problems) The only trouble I have is replacing the steering rack oil seal. Greetings from Ukraine
My friend had one with a standard instead of an automatic. It’s a rockstar. The D17 is a frail engine compared to other Honda engines besides the L15 it’s pretty reliable but aftermarket turbocharging will cause it to have problems done the road.
I had a 2005 civic ex bought brand new..its sitting in a scrap yard where it belongs along with all honda products. ..the head gasket went bad at 90k miles which I found was common on that CIVIC.too many problems to list but very glad it's gone
I'm with you brother. Replaced all the valves and the canister. I should try the gas cap next, but I'm not motivated anymore, lol. Been living with the damn code for 4 years now. Still runs great 🤷🏻♂️
I have a 2001 Honda Civic I have no of the issues mentioned. But you neglect to mention the # one issue these model Civics are prone to overheat due to blown head.
What!!!! 1:head gasket 2. Rack and pinion 3. Climate control panel 4. Battery terminals 5. Foggy head lights If this car over heats just a tiny bit the head and block warp .
mine is leaking so bad! It's an 04 but somehow it still runs and it's been leaking for 2 year. I add coolant every 3 week and I change oil at 3000 miles an no issues. It's been 40 000 miles of leaking. There is oil everywhere in the bay! I am at 3000 miles on the oil change now I it's still good. I will change it next week to play safe
btw it's leaking by the seal and the screw directly on the engine. My engine is covered in oil. I also replace the automatic transmition 3 years ago. I am now at 155 000 miles on the car
Wooow. I just had my wiper transmission replaced, back driver window motor/regulator replaced, the hood latch has always been hard to pull AND my SRS light is on! 😂 AND MY EVAP LIGHT WAS ON AND OFF FOR LIKE 3 YEARS 😂😂😂
Recently got one with 265k only problem on this list I’m having is evap leak, I got a fix for that, clear the code and it’ll be good for a week no check engine light. Lmao, but thankfully I live in Ohio and I don’t care for actually fixing it. Got too many other problems first it was front end work ,brakes and rotors , new tires, than needed a new master cylinder, thinking I’m finally done.... BAM, now I need a new wheel bearing good thing I haven’t got an alignment just yet lol. After that’s done, should be an amazing car besides cam wear, transmission seems to be running pretty good a lot better than my moms 2012 rav4.
@@lifepresent3183 i remove it on my civic pass test and no engine lights for that. do not remove valve just only canister, put the vacuumline back around in valve so it fools it 😉 The bigger hose which came to the engine just put there filter or stuff it some where up the car so the water wont come in there👍
I'm getting a used one soon from my local garage. My mother;s 04 Civic has a P0497, also a common one. Vlave by throttle body is probably not working. Basicly a purge flow issue because the solenoid on the valve does not open it. That's what I suspect. I have to set my sights on the 01 on because my CRV got T-boned and totaled out. Sadly no saving it.
orig owner 2005 LX daily driver has only 81k. Of these just had the driver side window motor problem. Not too hard to fix. Other problems tho....I replaced failed O2 sensor, , leaky transmission dip stick gasket, gasket on side of engine (cant remember name), driver side door latch/handle broke (fiddly to replace), fuel pump (top half part replaced to fix ) all DIY. Passenger seat belt and airbag issues fixed free at dealer. Now we have slow but increasing power steering fluid leak not on pump but somewhere so either hoses or the RP steering rack - a nightmare to replace for DIY.
I have a 2004 VP 146000 miles other than changing oil and air filter and tires. I have had only one shop repair my slave cylinder leaked so I changed the master also it leaked on drivers side during heavy rain I think I have that sorted and gas cap cable does not work so I access it through the trunk and do it manually I love it the only gripe I have is its slow on takeoff I have to get into third before I feel it accelerating I bought it 12 years ago for $8500 with 52000 miles in mint shape.😀
