I always have to laugh at people who think a 22LR is not a defensive round. There are absolutely better calibers but let's be honest no one wants to be 'shot' by even so much as a rubber band.

Maybe so, but I've seen a police report from an officer that responded to a shooting; a guy got shot in the face from 30 yd with a 22LR and it just got lodged in his cheek bone - otherwise, he was in pretty good shape

@@tylerstout1549That's why they make the BX25 magazine. Unless you're carrying something a bit bigger, you should always shoot as many shots as needed to stop the threat. Remember, never shoot until you or someone else's life is in danger.

@tylerstout1549 clearly double Tap is a thing, double double tap with a low recoiling rifle in a defensive situation is an absolute. I worked with a man whose wife got mad at him and shot him in the shoulder, it ricoched off his shoulder blade and went through his heart killing him. You can never know what a high velocity round will do......

I like your setup, mine has a folding high impact synthetic stock. It's a bit lighter, not effected by temp or humidity, has an adjustable comb, and length of pull, it's also a bit smaller when folded. I agree though it's a good choice, and though it's not legal most places much larger game can be taken with a .22 in a bind if you're a good shot.

I wrote this awhile ago for my Rimfire Central facebook group: Why do I consider the .22lr to be the best "Survival" rifle? First of all, we're talking "Survival Rifle", not "Battle Rifle". In battle/combat the objective is to engage the enemy and fight them. In a survival situation the objective is to "Evade the enemy and survive". Military Airforce pilots were issued rifles like the M4 which was a 5+1 shot bolt action chambered in .22 Hornet, and the M5 & M6 which was a .22 Hornet / .410 shotgun single shot over/under combo. As well as the MA-1/AR-5/AR-7 , a compact .22lr semi auto carbine. Pilots were hard to come buy and expensive to train, so if they had to bale out, or crash land the plane the Airforce would want them to evade the enemy, survive , and live to fight another day. Second is the fact that you can carry a lot of ammo for a .22lr on your person. 500 rounds in your backpack wouldn't be that hard to carry. Third, you can take a wide variety of game with a .22lr. Squirrels , Rabbit , Raccoon , and even deer and wild boar sized game with a well placed shot. Fourth, you can buy a .22lr rifle for under $300, and often times even cheaper than that. I once bought a Remington 514 single shot .22lr for $20, and it was a tack driving son of a gun! Fifth. My own personal opinion is to buy a single shot , Break action, bolt action , pump action , or lever action .22lr that will fire .22 shorts , .22 longs , .22 long rifle, and .22 #12 shot. This way you can use a wide verity of ammunition in the same rifle. My Ruger Super Single Six Combo Revolvers shoot .22 short, long , long rifle and it comes with a .22 WMR cylinder so you can shoot .22 magnums out of it too. Sixth, the ammunition is relatively cheap, so you can stock up on it without breaking the bank. Stored in a cool dry place, the ammo will last a really long time. Seventh, you can use the .22lr to protect your garden from pests. There are many reasons to consider a .22lr as a "Survival Gun", these are just a few. Like I said in the beginning, this is just my opinion. Yours may differ. JT

In defense of the 22 as a defensive firearm. One easy to shoot accurately by most. Can put multiple rounds on target quickly. Can stockpile and carry large amount of ammo and mags. You can lay down suppressing fire. Last , as a last ditch weapon, especially with a scope, you can place rounds into non armored areas to stop and kill if necessary in a defensive situation.

Not a defensive weapon? I can say from experience as an emt/volunteer ff seeing people shot with 22's, it will damn sure drop you. That little round likes bouncing around in the human body! Plus, for your wife or daughter, it's a hell of a lot easier for them to use versus some high powered rifle.

There certainly are advantages to this: it has a rail so you can mount a light; it’s threaded so you can mount a suppressor; it looks just like a .223/5.56 for intimating someone out of your house, and while .22 isn’t ideal, 26 rounds isn’t nothing either 😁.

I owned many 10/22’s over the years, and only had one that was totally reliable. I bought a Winchester Wildcat 22 semi-auto, and it’s been incredible. To break it down, you just push the button at the rear of the receiver and the action drops down similar to a AK-47/74 magazine without any small pins holding it in. I put approximately 1,500 rounds through it, and haven’t had any issues. Its accuracy is great, and the weight is around 4 lbs. My local Gun shop is selling them for $248 for the 18” model, and $262 for the 16.5” with a threaded barrel. The only reason the 10/22 would make sense to me anymore is the ability to replace the parts. Otherwise, I prefer the Wildcat. I love my Tippman too.

Regarding the "quiet" rounds from cci, aguila, etc., it is important to note that they should ideally be used in a bolt action or revolver As they often will not cycle the firearm; they are also not ideal for rifles as it is not uncommon for the round to stop in the middle of the barrel

I also agree with you on the fact that perhaps for defense not the best, but if that's all you have is better than nothing!. The Ruger 10/22 is very customizable... Love the newer models... like the 10-22 take down and the 10-22 tactical model... it is all about where you want to go with your ruger.... for plinking, small game it is the best also in my opinion.... And if you get a Ruger Mini 14 then you will be set!.

In my opinion, 22lr bullets will be the last around. Although there was once a shortage, they've returned and are still flying off the shelves. So, I'd imagine people have more 22lr than they do other rounds just because you get more for the money. The 22 will balance out your ammo storage, preventing you from going through your significant calibers - especially for small game hunting. It's a great video, and I agree with you 100%.

Yep. Enjoyed the video. Got my first one in '75 with paper route money. Would anybody agree that changing the magazine latch to the lever style was a mistake for Ruger? Maybe good for a combat rifle, so you can drop the mag. But it doesn't work as smooth with 10 round mags. The old style you depress with your thumb, and can pull out faster. Any size mag. I would recommend 10 round mags for hunting because the rifle is that much easier to handle. 👍

I didn't see any mention of ammo (in your video yes but not in the replies) which really makes a big difference. There is some ammo that I will not even touch after having bad experiences with it. Some bulk ammo is a rip-off with many misfires. I shouldn't have to mention their names if you have had any experience shooting 22lr.

For me the Ruger 10/22 Takedown with the Magpul X backpacker stock, and the Ruger SR22 pistol, even the Ruger 10/22 Charger pistol is a great option, and thrle Ruger 2245, all mated up with a suppressor.

Love the color and look of this 22. Do you have a link to the exact model and color? Can't seem to find it :(

About 10 years ago, I hit a very rough spot, financially. I had to sell pretty much everything I owned just to buy groceries. The one gun I kept was my 10/22 and a 5 gallon bucket full of ammo. I knew that would keep my belly full of racoon and possum steaks for many years, lol.

One of the best rifle ever made but it have one downside. If you use your rucksack as an bench the magazine can pop out. The magazine realese is not very good designed.

While I agree with everything you said about the 10-22 as a survival rifle. ( I own one also) It needs to be said that in a survival/camping situation.. It should be partnered with the proper sidearm.. If the 22 rifle is what you pack as your primary food collector , your side arm should be a decent cal hunting revolver. to cover larger threats/game. Personally I prefer to take a 30-30 or 38/357 lever action as my primary , and a 22lr/22mag as my side arm. this combo will cover most game/threats in the continental US. In my experience its far easier to find small game with in pistol range than it is big game. Paired with passive trapping , their should never be a situation you find yourself going hungry . Couple foot hold traps in your bag and some fishing gear. Your surviving on easy mode.

Kinda hard to run up on you after you do the, accuracy through volume challenge. I prefer to run the Aguila brand , the stuff you showed and the Sniper SubSonic. In Canada they prohibited the Ruger mags that hold 11+ rounds (because of that Charger thing) , but there are magazine adapters for more capacity. The Ruger 10/22 and it's bolt action cousin are great rifles, I have a tough time deciding which one I like most as I have a few.

I keep my .22lr in a paintball tube for easy packing. Holds about 500 rds. Also with the Magpul backpacker stock it fits in a messenger bag 16”.

I took out my new Backpacker. It shoots super straight. I can reach out to 100yds with the factory fiber optic sights. Two men I was hunting small game with me both said they are going to buy one when we get back in town. Rating 5 star

Without watching your video, the title was enough to make me comment. Especially with a name like Idaho Prepper, seeing as Idaho has Grizzly Bears. A Ruger 44 Mag Semi Auto would be a much better choice.

MP15-22 has entered the chat...great video but everything you said can really be applied to any good solid semi .22. The 10-22 is a legend but I much prefer the s&w!

A magazine fed rifle, like the 10/22, has advantages over a tube fed rifles. Faster reloading with multiple mags. Also, you can carry different types of ammo in different magazines in case your situation changes quickly.

I'm confused about capacity and magazines. So the standard is 10 rounds and it sits flush with the gun. Yet that extremely long banana magazine only holds five more rounds? That just doesn't seem right. What's going on? Are there higher capacity magazines for this gun?

10/22 is a great rifle (like a Glock it has lots of mods), but I have had some ammo not feel well, especially older rounds. I have several 22lr rifles, and my CZ 457 has to be my most accurate and reliable rifle in 22lr. It's probably not the best for self-defense though...

So many shooters under estimate a 22LR.(Good for Small game and plinking) I have taken up to 400lbs cattle, and big game with it. If you can hit something big at under 50 yds behind the ear, between the eyes, it will be dead. Anyone that hunts, nows 50 yds is about the average distance most big game are hunted. Ok, Plains game or accross the canyon, to far. Most wooden cover close enough. In human threatenig situation. You don't blast away like in the moovies. If you bring down just 1 with 1 accurate shot. Likelly they will stop, not rush you, and you can pick some more before they make you, and likelly retreat. They are not trained Marines nor profesional cartel hitmen. To much movies and video games. If allowed, a Muffler raises yout odds 100%. Game doesn't care after it's down. Many, Many game will just stand there if you miss. trying to figure out what's going on

Negative Ghost Rider on that shot ammo. It's for mice at 2 feet distance. It does NOT have the range or power to kill a bird or squirrel size animal ESPECIALLY with a rifled barrel. There are Marlin Garden Guns and others that are smooth bore that can kill small game animals but are infinitely better when chambered in 22 Winchester Magnum.

I do not own a 10/22 as of yet, but If I should decide to buy another long gun that would be the one I would purchase. I currenty have 2 bold actions and 2 semi autos in 22LR.

I collect Machineguns and I think it always shocks folks when I tell them a suppressed 10/22 will be the most important firearm to have in a bad scenario. Good luck packing enough ammo to feed rifle caliber full autos into the hills.

As a canadian i think a 22 and a 12 guage would be the perfect setup for survival or defence. That being said if i could own an actual AR15 or AK i would.

For long term I got to agree. One can carry a ton of ammo and who in their right mind would want to take on a well trained family or a person with .22 rifles and good tactics. The variety of ammo you mentioned and subsonic (low velocity) like the ones you demonstrated mean no suppressor needed. Aguila SSS rounds are also good for quiet use. That being said a good pump .22 airgun can provide a lot of small game with extremely low ammo cost a one can carry a ton (figuratively speaking) of those pellets. Plus it saves the rifle ammo for more serious need. I got a feeling .22 lr will be woth more than gold if SHTF occurs.
