Glad to see the expensive bits are good.

Mostly, if I were not fortunate I would have had to buy the most expensive part. The laygear.

It's probably best to get another box and rob out the lay gear cluster, keeping the damaged one as a potential spare.

Yes, that groove in the synchro hub is intentional. Looking pretty good. Keep it going!

Thanks Chris! And thank you for confirming that. I had a feeling it was, but wasn’t certain until after I looked at a few parts online.

Very good video, I've never had the guts to strip any of my gearboxes down, but I'm sure with youtube videos to help, I might have done so!

Elin with Rusty Beauties gives a fantastic breakdown of how they work and how to repair them.

Swap internals as long as od mainsheet is OK. Alternatively get a new od mainsheet and swap adapter over. Renew bearings as well. I recommend gearbox assembly goo . I managed reassembly without a dummy layshaft Using goo.

I will pretty much be doing just that, though ill use the dummy shaft for insurance. Its cheap and can save me some frustration.

Reverse gears are usually going to be OK, simply because they hardly get used.

The most important thing for an overdrive box is having a good mainshaft tip, because when they go bad, the mainshaft is effectively scrap. Cutting off the old tip, drilling it out and inserting a new one doesn't work, because they need to be specially hardened.

Ouch, Spitbits are expensive!

Thankfully this one is in good shape! I priced the parts out on three different sites and they were all very close. The big thing about Spitbits is that they had everything I needed in stock and ready to ship.

@StevesProjectCarGarage The mainshaft tip tends to be a much bigger problem with the D-type than on the J-type. I used to have a D-type on my full synchro box in my old Herald, but after problems caused by bad tips, I changed it to a J-type, I also used one in my Vitesse, and kept one brand new J-type on it's original box as a spare, and no, I won't sell it!

So finicky to take apart, it's amazing that so much of it was coming apart on its own. Were the bits of metal on the layshaft the remnants of roller bearings?
@StevesProjectCarGarage
@StevesProjectCarGarage 8 месяцев назад
Pretty wild right? It was bits of laygear. The material I found was not enough to be 3 large ball bearings. I have no clue where they went lol.

@@StevesProjectCarGarage I mis-spoke. I meant the needle bearings between the Layshaft and Laygear.
@StevesProjectCarGarage

@MikeHammill-TheShop ahhh yes. The needle bearings were in good shape actually!

Very interesting. So how do the balls fall out of the bearing like that?
@StevesProjectCarGarage
@StevesProjectCarGarage 8 месяцев назад
I have no clue, and what is even odder is that i didnt find them lol. So im guessing the my were removed by whomever made an mess of the gearbox with the gasket maker. Those bearing cant fall forward due to the bellhousing, and they were not in the gearbox…. Makes me wonder where they went.

Just wanted to point out after you were inspecting the reverse gear, you put it back on the shaft backwards. I just didn't want you to get confused during reassembly on which way it goes.

Thanks! I was not really paying attention when putting it back on. Thank you for the heads up!

Nice video Steve, I take it that you have decided to still use the same casing?

Hey Philip! I did, it seems to be in good shape and that one lobe seems nice and strong.

A question: Did this damaged gearbox has syncro on 1st gear? If so, that is not normal for this model of Spitfire. But i would wish my gearbox had it. Also a aluminium clutch is not the norm. You have a special kind of gearbox i would say.
@StevesProjectCarGarage
@StevesProjectCarGarage 8 месяцев назад
So the damaged gearbox is a 4 synchro out of the 1971 or 1972 Spitfire. The old gearbox was out of a Spitfire 4 so it had the aluminum bellhousing and 3 synchro setup with no synchro on first gear.
