If you’ve ever tried to get help for struggles in your life related to childhood trauma - you may have been told, pressured even, to spend time and money talking about the past - even if you’ve talked about the past or years -- even when you don’t feel that’s the problem right now. and even if you’re desperate to work on present problems, so you can be happier. There's a time to talk about what happened and a time to work on present day problems. In this video I respond to a letter from a woman who feels ready to stop talking and get to work on changing her life.

I keep making the same mistake, I NEVER let people know what I want, I just assume they know, or SHOULD know, then I get disappointed and hurt and spend the next 10 years talking and bitching about it. It's all in the avoidance of rejection (which is BECAUSE of trauma) which leads to further trauma and rejection.

Interesting. I found every therapist to be extremely boring, because they would always ask further questions and try to explain to me why something happens. I know why, and I don't care. I've had enough conversations with myself about everything. I need concrete practical steps and actions to resolve the issue. So yeah, it's always a byeee from me too.

CBT Therapists are not motivational coaches. Their goal is to identify underlying issues and help you learn potential coping mechanisms. Ongoing use of coping mechanisms will not instill drive. For solutions beyond therapy, consider finding someone who specializes in Motivational Interviewing.

Get a new therapist! The assessment by a qualified psychotherapist is about context. Once that context is understood, then it’s about exploring how you coped. As children we learn from zero experience of life. We do what we need to in order to survive. We grow up unwittingly with coping skills which aren’t useful to us anymore as adults. Understanding this and forgiving ourselves when we fully grasp this is part of healing. Growing out of the clutches of PTSD is about learning new ways of thinking and living. Talking is a big part of therapy, but only if it’s helping your client raise awareness about their problems not just about the genesis of them. If a client is able to work on new ways of enjoying life, coupled with leaving their old childhood methods of coping, they stand a chance of growth emotionally. Occasionally revisiting childhood trauma is useful if it eliminates those painful memories. (using EMDR) However the aim is to facilitate psychological growth in clients and it saddens me to hear people being given bad therapy.

I guess the point I was trying to make is at some point you just have to accept it is what it is and move on. No amount of words will ever change what happened so just rehashing it over and over keeps a dark cloud overhead and a lot of negative energy in your head space.

Sharon, the Daily Practice and Meditation changed my life. I also engaged in “Movement Medicine” (moving emotions, past, and trauma through my body). I have found the most healing by being in relationship with someone who deeply loves me, the daily practice, and movement medicine … I have a rich background in DBT therapy and 12-step rooms but Anna’s approach and moving my body has done more for me than talking. Cecilia -- I find the best way to meet new people is to volunteer for something that I care about. It may be an animal rescue, a charity art event, a river cleanup, or a political campaign. You can even volunteer with your son at a food bank or a community festival if you like. I know it's hard to add activities into a single parent's already busy life, but it sounds like you want friends & connection and these are tried-and-true ways to meet and befriend like-minded people.

I love this letter too, so eloquent and self aware. 💖 Making art, like being in nature is a healing path unto itself. For some, a life devoted to art may mean fewer intimate relationships, but ones that ARE meaningful. Your work and contribution to the larger world may or may not be appreciated during your lifetime. But the healthy regulation that creating art creates in body and spirit is a gift and makes us better able to show up in our lives even if we live better a bit removed from the hustle and bustle. A solitary-ish life can be healthy and sane.

Amen, and sometimes one doesn’t know what, exactly, to do. I have done a lot of work, and have healed, integrated some - but often, I don’t really know what “to do”, except keep seeking, review most current “notes” and keep going. Depending upon what one is working on, it can be puzzle-like; a piece here, one there, that piece for the border and so on.

Interestingly there is some research to suggest for some people free journaling is not good because they get stuck in loops that just repeat and intensify rather than breed new insights. Those people tend to do better with prompts.... There's no way of knowing if that's happening here but I read about the study and it made me think
@hopeandcoffee97

@@katherinek2709 Not 'keeping' a journal per se but creative output on paper, that happens to dissipate inbuilt tension about something can help a lot when done mindfully. for eg a comedian may sublimate his frustrations with the world. with wit and humour about its foibles. Anna herself recommends the daily practice, which is neither journalling nor creative but simply venting on paper all the mess-fears and resentments-inside, throwing it, then meidtating on something bland, neutral(a sound or word) for fifteen minutes, twice a day. Boy that helps.:)

After therapy and meditation, opening to people a little bit at a time works. It is slow, only do what you. can do. In my healing during therapy I had an image of me in a dark cave. Eventually In my daily meditation I saw open trench. Eventually I was out of the trench and on a desert land scape. Last vision I was on a rocky outcrop over looking a green valley. I am not in the valley yet but I know it is there. I am finding creative visions are very important.

ACA: "We progress from hurting to healing to helping." Initially in ACA, I think you go through a lot of "hurting" early in ACA. But taking on old family scripts takes courage and action. It's like whacking a sledgehammer at a concrete wall to break through. And sometimes, you succeed in that part of the "remodeling," but some parts of the wall are stubborn and won't ever crack. And then you realize that banging on that wall will never result in a complete "remodeling," And that's where grief comes in and you get to choose to pick up the sledgehammer and start whacking on the walls that have been built inside over the years to contain all that crap that was experienced and witnessed growing up in a para-alcoholic (ie, codependent) home. The heaviness hits home; friends can help by listening but the breakthroughs can only come by surrendering to the fact that the calvary ain't coming to the rescue. And that's hard to accept. But, "Acceptance is the answer."

Maybe its because I've lived in acknowledgment of all the trauma along with unintentional new trauma for so long, i really think trauma talk can be detrimental to one's health. I fully agree that secrets are bad and can even be deadly, people need to share the grief that trauma leaves behind...but talking about traumatic events really feels like reoffending, after a time.. I see people get all worked up time and again. I personally have had to stop doing that to myself. The hard thing is moving forward. The CCF membership sounds really ideal, its so nice to feel seen and accepted by others. I fluctuate between wanting to join and wanting to ignore the presence of maladjusted lifelong behaviors... I really relate to Cecilia and I just want to add that the comment the guy made about art as escape is wrong. It took decades for me to return to my art because of deeply ignorant comments I heard around art. People who don't practise or look at art have absolutely no understanding of its true meaning or function. Therefore they have no say in it. Cecilia please know that you are not alone in the fruitful joy you find in art, and not only that, it is very healthy that you do. Art is fundamentally important not just for the individual but for society. Arggghhhh it drives me mad how people make such ignorant comments about it.

So what is this lady actually wanting when she goes to see these therapists and coaches? Breaking thru denial is a big part of moving forward and taking action and if you always want to swat away what people are saying than it's equivalent to painting without speaking. People don't just come in your life in various forms for you to dismiss their significance being there. Be open to hearing others and allow yourself to be heard in return. Putting down others offerings and what they have to offer one human to another is "not enough". I'd then ask her if she ever feels what she has to offer the world is "not enough". She has a lot of questions and ponderings but is unwilling to give others the benefit of the doubt of sharing their outside perspective and help with her. OPEN is a good middle name and start there... leave the glass cage and lead with OPEN... starting in the safe space with a trained therapist. TRUST is the next middle name and then ACTION. Going to therapy and feeling like it's not working because you are not remaining open to the process is limiting and must be emotionally exhausting. I can only imagine if this is being carried over into your life.
@dsum6377
@dsum6377 4 месяца назад
This is certainly my opinion but much of what you write isn't helpful for someone with ADHD. In fact, it could be harmful. From what I can tell in this read letter, people aren't sharing their offerings with her, they are dictating what should be done and that there is one right way to do it. The letter writer is seeking autonomy, support, community and validation. Repeated failure experiences are devastating for someone with ADHD and new experiences should be managed. It's far beyond just emotionally exhausting.

I have been driven out of a close relationship by this person's inability to stop talking about, and reliving, the trauma. We are both affected by CPTSD, but my desire is to heal and create a new life with healthy habits. I sense that talking about it keeps the feels fresh, and the anxiety spiked. My loved one was enraged that I wanted to stop listening to the same stories ad nauseam. Because of the pain involved, I can't even share that opinion without being attacked as a bad friend, weak, and unlearned in recovery. I was shocked to be sacrificed at the altar of pain. I accepted the distance and hope to reconcile some day when more growth has happened. Talking about it constantly is emotional incontinence, and it keeps us inflamed and our thoughts preoccupied. There is so much more to do in this life.

Oh my god she is beautiful! I totally can relate with many experiences. I’m wondering if she’s stuck with a covert narc husband and having trouble facing it I wonder? I got back into trauma therapy EMDR and sand play therapy. But something important she said , that her husband said “ are you away with the faireys?” Sounds funny ha ha on the surface but out of everything she shared…. Ugh painting , holding our pugs/ doggies to get affection we need , self help etc etc , the hardest part for me is trying to heal in yet another environment that makes me sick . But when we become financially dependent on Covert Narcissist, a survival thing, it’s not funny, if I have to go away with the fairies that means I feel safer with Mother Earth and elementals than I do with my supposed to be supportive safe mate. The tough part, the cocoon, smooshy squishy, painful realization but she should give herself credit of all those beautiful parts and after that’s faced and reach out to support groups for domestic abuse there’s an end in sight and a beautiful free life, even if with doggies for a short time until we connect to supportive loving human beings. Yes. They do exist. Or. I’m just a nutter?

Everyone is different and your road back to your authentic self will be different. I won't do crossfit at my age. It would do more harm than good But others thrive. Just because someone has letters at the end of their title doesn't mean they have what you need. Even medical doctors. You have to find one that aligns with your needs.

Was he giving YOU emotional support? I ask that because the affection and emotional support was something my ex husband threw in my face when we split up. I was the only one doing any affectionate things, yet it got turned around on me that I was the problem. Was he helping you, or is this some gaslighting? Also as much as you don't want to hear this, time and distance are going to be your best friends for healing from this. You've gotta feel the pain and grieve the loss. There are no shortcuts to healing. It hurts and it sucks. You've got fantastic communities here on RU-vid, so don't hesitate to share and ask for guidance. We've all been there.

@@spacegirl226 he was! I believe the breakup was mostly my fault because we fell into a child-parent dynamic (which he said he liked in the beginning, but eventually burnt out on). He gave me emotional support, I gave him little these past few months. I've been stressed with uni work and when we had talks about our problems I would break down a lot and nothing would get resolved. This happened 3-4 times so he said enough. It's still very hard because he convinced me he was going to marry me, and he had all the qualities of my ideal partner, but I guess I wasn't his ideal partner. I'm so happy for the community this channel provides, CCF has helped me a lot through grieving and setting some mental health goals for myself.

@@spacegirl226 yes and I believe the breakup was due to me stagnating and being dysregulated all the time without the ability to identify the problems and work on them effectively. We broke up on the 3 year mark, we sort of put ourselves in a parent-child which he explicitly said he enjoyed in the beginning of the relationship. Then he (as expected) burned out on always having to be the "parent", all of the "you've improved so much in this relationship" quickly transformed to "you're not improving at all". I kinda struggle with relationships because I feel like I'm getting too old and I have problems identifying partners needs and/or figuring out ways to meet them, I haven't seen any good relationships growing up so I was kinda scrambling to do everything right for the first time ever in this relationship. Trial/error. I'm very grateful for the CCF community ^_^ happy to learn about CPTSD every day her videos have helped me a lot with setting attainable mental health goals, still figuring it out while trying not to grieve the loss of this.

@@clonejones7955 so supportive... not. Sometimes we need guidance for dealing with these problems by people with more experience and insight. It was the WHOLE POINT of OP's post - to get that guidance and advice from people who might have been able to help!

Hmm. I think the mistakes many make in therapy (including myself) is 1. thinking talk therapy is a passive process (it isn't) and 2. not being honest with your therapist if something isn't working. Therapy requires you to be an active participant - once I learned this, everything changed for me. Also, meditation is not for everyone, either - for some, it actually makes PTSD symptoms worse (again, myself included). I recommend this video from a Harvard-trained psychiatrist (who is also a big fan of coaching): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Z0cImkA_eV4.html
